I came here to celebrate my aunt's birthday with my husband, my aunt, and her best friend. I'm not the biggest fan of raw seafood to begin with, but I wanted to give it a try since I've heard so many good things about Hog Island (I've also been to the Napa location). The service was quick and friendly, which I appreciated. My family enjoyed their meal, but I have to say I've had better oysters elsewhere. A few of them had pieces of shell still attached, which really threw me off. I was also surprised that my fam added salt to the crudo we got, that's how you know it needed more flavor. I also tried the clam chowder, and unfortunately it wasn't for me. It lacked flavor, and the celery and carrots overpowered the rest of the soup. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but as someone who's already a bit picky about raw seafood, this didn't quite live up to the hype for me. I'm glad I gave it a try, but I'm not sure I'd return specifically for the oysters.
Ferry Building Cornerstone Does Great Seafood by the Bay Who doesn't want excellent seafood in a cazh sit-down resto by the waterfront? Said nobody. Welcome to Hog Island Oyster Co., which hits all the wickets at SF's Ferry Building, and where the eats are so good, even a former local will go to it again and again. What did we get? 1. Oyster Bar Mix. You can mix different raw oysters, and we got the locally sourced Sweetwater with its mild buttery flavor and the saltier Narragansett Bay from the East Coast. Best of both worlds for a happening contrast of flavor. The house made mignonette was on point, being just the right amount of mild sourness. Absolutely recommend but also with some cocktail sauce. 2. New England Style Clam Chowder. My favorite kind of clam chowder, we had several different riffs on this during our most recent road trip through NorCal. And the is one was by far the best. It's a happening dish with a lighter broth but so tasty nonetheless, being not too salty and still creamy enough. The potatoes weren't mushy but still had some good mouthful, not starchy. The clams cooked perfectly and fresh. Overall seasoning was good and well balanced. Definite recommend. 3. Shrimp Po' Boy. One of the best I have had. Shrimp was decent size and batter was crunchy but plump and moist with good and not overpowering seasoning. Bread also had excellent crunchy crust and soft interior. Not a huge amount of slaw for extra flavor, but it's okay before the shrimp got to shine. Comes with snappy fries dusted in Cajun seasoning and organic Heinz ketchup (nice tomato flavor comes though and not overly syrupy sweet for a refreshing dip). Recommended. A great eatery worth visiting when you're in town. Also worth a detour from the usual touristy Fisherman's Wharf. Maybe catch a bite on the way to Sausalito on the next visit. But as always, Yelpers, give this one a try if you haven't already. Even if you're a local.

(Sometimes it's not offered so we get other kinds.) Their steamed clams dish is so delicious. The chorizo, garlic, shallots add so much flavor to the broth. We love dipping the grilled cheese sandwich in the broth! Their grilled cheese sandwich is not the typical grilled cheese...more gourmet. It's made with a variety of white cheeses on toasted focaccia bread from the Acme Bread Company. It's very rich and fabulous! Everything is fantastic. Once you're seated the food comes pretty quickly. This is a great location right by the water. Great views if you sit outside. Definitely a place to go if you visit SF.
Stopped in for an afternoon snack while in Ferry Building. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant has a nice view of the pier with the Oakland bridge in the background.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Quite a nice view. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place was busy and hopping even at mid afternoon.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We opted for the grilled oysters and tried the chipotle bourbon, jelapeno and green misso. The chipotle was my personal favorite. These were some of the fishiest smelling oysters. They just smelled fishy but tasted perfectly normal. The oysters were fresh and tasty, but just a little too much butter for my personal preference. Otherwise quite good. The service was a bit slow; waited 15 minutes before the server came to get our order.
Food, 5/5. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Location, 5/5.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service 4/5. The only thing this place lacks is a kids menu. I dunno, maybe they don't want kids here. Our waitress said they could order buttered noodles as a side, but they don't have any kids portions of anything else. We ended up splitting the grilled cheese between two of them and subbing the pickled veggies for fries. It was an ok solution but not a great solution. Enjoyed a phenomenal dinner here for the rest of our crew though. The grilled oyster sampler is so good. All the options were good, but we liked the sriracha ones best. Not spicy, just a little kick. This would be the reason I'd come back. My fried oysters and fries were delicious. My son liked the mussels. The clam chowder is unique in that it has whole clams in the shell. So good.

It was a large party of 10 so it took a minute for them to get the table ready for. I got the clam chowder and a cocktail. Several other people tried the oysters and other menu items. Second time at Hog Island & this visit was certainly not as good as the last. Food: 5/5 - always, highly recommend the grilled oysters as an appetizer and then we had the steamers with pasta + the seafood stew. Both were fantastic. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance: 3/5 - ambiance is just okay. It's right on the water so a nice view from the outdoor seating but nothing particularly outstanding about the restaurant itself in terms of decor or architecture.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service: 1.5/5 - huge miss. For the prices on this menu, I would expect service to be a lot better. We waited in line to be sat (no waiting list, just an old school line) and it took only 10 minutes or so to be sat but it was very bizarre, we were a party of 2 ready to be sat & she took the couple behind us and sat them first. No particular reasoning given. The host seemed to really not care about much. From there, service was odd. Our server didn't introduce herself and just asked us what we wanted. Again, not a necessity but you would think for somewhere you're paying $30+ per plate, service would be a bit better. An oyster holder was delivered to our table after we had already finished oysters. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Glass was broken near our table and hastily swept up. Bussers were dropping silverware right next to our table.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Again, just wasn't great ambiance or service. The food is good but there are other good restaurants in San Francisco. I would really only come here again with low service expectations.
Killer fresh seafood! We generally come here if we're in town visiting the city. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ferry building is a cool spot to walk around and take in views of the Bay Bridge. So, try to grab a table outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service is always superb here - staff is very attentive. You can't go wrong w anything. Char grilled oysters (split 50/50 between jalepeño and chipotle bourbon) are a must. They come out piping hot and are massive. My wife ordered the mussels which she loves and I opted for shrimp and chips. Big meaty shrimp and well seasoned / cooked fries. If you're nearby, this is a must.
When our daughter committed to college this was one of the restaurants we celebrated at so it was only fitting this graduation weekend that we headed back! In perfect weather we enjoyed the incredible views, local IPAs, chilled oysters, grilled oysters and crudo! As always every dish was perfect! Amazing service! This will always be one of my favorite places in the city!
I love the ferry building and everytime I am in SF, I make it a point to stop in. Ive always loved being on a ferry, on the water, taking me to a new place, to a new adventure! And no matter how old I am, that feeling never goes away. I get giddy like a school kid coming here, almost skipping if not literally running for this building! I saw this place the last time I was here and made it a point to come back on my next trip to SF. The views from this restaurant are epic and just absolutely gorgeous. You see, I love raw oysters and its one of my favorite things to eat, so this was a pure delight to come here. At 7:10pm, there was a line waiting to get in (the place supposedly closes at 8pm), so I hopped in line, hoping everything would work out. As I was a party of one, it was easy. I was led to the back bar in less than 5 min, so no wait for me! Bartender was excellent and great service. I love when a service industry person gets it because I once too was a waitress so I know what it means to be a good server. He was attentive when he needed to be, not intrusive despite the closeness of our physical space and he just got it all right! I started off with a Blood in the Water cocktail. I like mezcal and like it a lot. Im not an alcoholic, but when mezcal is on the menu, it makes my heart sing. I must be a true Sonoran at heart haha. This was basically a Michelada with a smoky mezcal flavor, I liked it. But for $16, I will pass next time and try another mezcal based drink (which I saw plenty on the menu). Next, it was time for some seafood, which this place is known for. I was torn between raw oysters, the catch of the day or some chowda (as it was cold when I visited). In the end, I chose to only have a half dozen of raw oysters. Why did I make that choice? Because, I was led to the back bar and I was not facing the water at all and I had literally no view of the beautiful water and ferries, so I decided I would check out their raw oysters this time and dip out for a nice walk by the water. I had the Sweetwater (2), Highwater (2), Olympia (1) and Ritherdon Beach (1) oysters. I like buttery oysters and not too briny and so my favorites were the Sweetwater and Highwater, they were excellent. The oysters were really good and fresh! One weird thing here and maybe its cuz I am weird is that horseradish doesnt come automatically with the oysters. And when they brought it, it was dried horseradish and not fresh horseradish. I thought that was strange, but maybe its a Vivian problem, not this place. Overall, a great experience here. I deducted one star because I was facing a wall and not the beautiful views but everything else was excellent. I will be back again and next time, I will ask to have a seat where I can see the water. The line was definitely worth it to get in here!
I stopped by on a Saturday for lunch. They opens at 11. I was in the queue at 10:40. I got a seat right after they opened. Clam chowder was probably my favorite item. Unlike clam chowder in other places, here it is slightly thin, but comes with whole clams with shells. It was very flavorful. Grilled oyster chipotle bourbon was fresh and flavorful. Fish and chips was good. Lingcod was the fish. This is the first time I am having lingcod. It is a light fish, meaning less flavorful.
A staple in SF. Haven't been here in 10 years or so but glad it's doing well. Came on a Sunday waited 40 mins in the sun. Got indoor seating. Service is fast and attentive. Food and seafood was nice and comforting. It's what you would expect. Decent amount of seafood. It's quite loud in there so expect to yell a bit during conversations. Nice get together with friends but it requires a lot of effort from parking to lining up to all that come with the Ferry building. 4 entries, some oysters and a beer came over $200+. The value isn't there but overall it's the friends that we were with that made it fine.

Third time's the charm! The first two times we tried to eat at Hog Island Oyster Co., we took one look at the line and walked away. This visit, we came determined to finally see what all the hype was about--and I'm so glad we did. The wait was about 30 minutes, which honestly wasn't bad for such a popular spot. The best part? Once we were seated, service was incredibly efficient. Our food arrived quickly, giving us more time to savor every bite. The oysters were as fresh as they come--briny, sweet, and tasting like they had just come out of the bay. We ordered all three grilled oyster varieties, and each one was outstanding. The toppings added layers of flavor without masking what makes a great oyster so special: its delicate natural sweetness. It's a balance that's surprisingly hard to get right, and Hog Island nailed it. Then came the clam chowder. Wow. Velvety, rich, and loaded with tender clams, it had deep, comforting flavor without feeling overly heavy or salty. Easily one of the best clam chowders I've ever had. Now I completely understand why people are willing to wait in line. Some places are all hype--this isn't one of them. Hog Island absolutely lives up to its reputation, and we'll happily be back! read more
Never misses ! We always end up coming here on the weekends which is the busiest for them but we love the hustle and bustle. The offer indoor and outdoor dining, we ended up outside since the weather was so nice. Come early if you don't want to wait which is what we usually do. Service is always impeccable every time and we never have any issues with the staff! Food is to die for and if you're not coming for oysters then you're definitely missing out ! Fresh and perfectly shucked everytime ! We tried out he soft shell crab this time around and it was amazing !!!! Highly recommend this place and then walking around after because you will leave stuffed ! read more

The oysters were very fresh! The line was long but it still went by very fast and the servers were amazing. They explained the menu and the type of oysters depending on what you like more. Nice view when sitting outside and overall a good time! read more

The oysters are fresh and flavorful- get the variety pack! The clam chowder is solid and lovingly plated with all the clam shells. The mussels I wasn't as big a fan of but that's on me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is a bit of a tourist trap and kinda expensive but the food is great quality, service was quick and efficient, and sitting by the waterfront is peace.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] read more
Amazing, fresh seafood thats unlike the others. [[HIGHLIGHT]]sitting right on the water & eating seafood is a special experience![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We both loved everything we got except the lingcod fritters fell a tiny bit short. not warm all the way through but tasted good! This food really WOWed me on flavor & execution. We got all the right things. Service was nice, they close early so last call for kitchen was happening as all our food arrived. I've been searching for an oyster bar close to home and decided to give this place a try. The wait wasn't bad, about 30 minutes, and honestly worth it. Our server was amazing and very attentive considering how busy it was. Everything was on point. The oysters were delicious, the cocktails were yummy, and they had one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. Definitely did not disappoint I'll absolutely be returning. read more
Everything from this place was super delicious. We arrived at around 7:30pm on a Friday and were seated immediately. The kitchen closes at 8pm and they kick you out around 8:30pm, so we probably should have aimed for 7pm instead. Was with a friend who loves seafood, so this was the perfect spot for him. The salmon special was served on top of pesto with asparagus, peas, oyster mushroom, the salmon was so tender and the pesto was so flavorful. Absolutely would order again. Also really enjoyed the margarita and chipotle bourbon grilled oysters. Halibut crudo was delicious. Did not love the lingcod croquettes nor the salmon collar as much, I guess I just wasn't really in the mood for fried food when it came down to it, but my friend really enjoyed them. read more
Tourist trap. Expensive. Flavorless. I came for a lunch and ordered six oysters, the clam chowder, and two beers. This was an $81 lunch before tip. The chowder didn't have much flavor, the broth pretty much tasted like heavy cream. Like just heavy cream. And served room temperature. The oysters were fine but not worth the price. The service sucked. I was sat on the literal corner of the bar which most places would even have a seat at but Hog Island definitely is getting every penny out of the place. The service was slow. Like he literally saw me pull my card out to pay and immediately walked away so I couldn't just pay and leave. I went to Hog Island a few years ago with my family, and it was very memorable - partially because of the view, partially because of the weather, but mostly for the food. That's why I decided to go back as I was in the area. I was there a late lunch, and I was immediately seated. I ordered the Oyster Po' Boy, and it was served within 10 minutes. It was as I remembered it - fresh, juicy, and comforting. Just a straight up good meal. My only observation - the portion size (particularly the amount of fries) seemed to shrunk since my list visit. Service was fine. It's very casual, but not complaints. Overall, a good meal. Uncomplicated seafood done right. I look forward to coming back again. read more

Went to Hog Island Oyster Co. on a Friday for oysters. The experience started off rough. the host came off pretty rude and kept rushing us about when our third person would arrive, which set the tone. Service didn't really improve from there. Drink service was surprisingly slow even though we only ordered shots, so we spent a lot of time waiting around. The oysters themselves were fine, but nothing that stood out, honestly comparable to what you can get at Waterbar. Overall, the vibe and service didn't match the hype. There are better spots in the city for oysters and a smoother experience. read more
One of San Francisco's most famous seafood eateries, and for good reason. Food here is consistently good, fresh, and you come for the bustling sounds of a fast-paced lunch. I came for a quick bite of sauvignon blanc, geoduck ceviche, and a tray of oysters. Hog Island has their own wine, which was a perfect day time wine to pair with a fresh oysters lunch. You can also buy bottles home as souvenirs by the way!! The oysters were fresh. I would recommend getting their sampler tray and getting another order of whichever your favorites are. Everytime I come, I think I know which oysters I'll like, but I am often proven wrong. They just have a very good selection of oysters. The geoduck was wonderful. For those who don't know, geoduck is a very large clam, which has a very nice texture when sliced thinly. It was in a beautifully bright and herby sauce. I think Hog Island is touristy and a bit expensive, but to me, it is a part of the San Francisco experience. read more

Five stars, every time, based on the food. If you want oysters, I'm not sure you could find a better place for them. My husband and I knew we were coming to the city, and looked forward to Hog Island. We ordered a dozen of the mixed raw oysters. They were fantastic. So fresh, and the accoutrements that came with the were delicious. It was nice to try oysters from three different areas. Some were more salty, some more creamy. All delicious! We also ordered grilled oysters and we loved the butter & basil ones! The Rockefeller were also good. We got the clam chowder which had amazing flavor. We ordered bread & butter and expected it to be fresh and warm but it was rather hard and not warm. You don't come here for the bread, but I thought this was a little bit of a miss because bread is such a great addition especially when ordering chowder. The cocktails were also well balanced and enjoyable. The main thing I would say that was a little bit of a miss was the service. Our waitress was not very friendly and that was a bummer. But, even with that, this place still deserved five stars because the food is just that good. read more
I was visiting The City with my friend and we wanted to eat around the Ferry Building. Wanting to enjoy the seafood around (which I rarely crave for seafood) we settled at this location. We sat outside, so we got a nice view of the Bay. Though it was not too chilly or sunny, sitting outside felt a lot better than sitting inside. Acme Bread with Butter: I wanted something to start and you can never go wrong with bread and butter. For two people, you get plenty of bread to start the meal. The bread tasted fresh and crunchy. I would get this again. Fish and Chips: This was absolutely delicious. The fish was fried perfectly and plentiful for my plate. The tartar sauce was perfect as a dipping sauce and the coleslaw was refreshing. The fries were alright and the homemade ketchup was fantastic. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and time here. Beautiful day in the City! Started out at Hog Island Oyster, waited in line for 25 min, but couldn't complain with the water nearby and walked around the pier and farmers market. Once seated we had bread, and food came out quickly and super fresh. I had the grilled oysters (chipotle bourbon and margarita sauce- this one was my favorite). I was so happy with the rustic seafood stew, flavorful, fresh and plenty of seafood- highly recommend! We also had the hog island clam chowder (sad this didn't come with a side of the acme levain bread or sourdough because that was so good!) would highly recommend if in the area wait times can vary on your party. Visited for a weekday dinner for 2, and we were able to walk in and get seated at the bar. Service was friendly. This was my first time here, so we ordered the Oyster Bar Mix. I like small, clean, crisp, and sweet oysters so my favorites were the West Passage and Hog Island Kumamoto - both were excellent. We also ordered the mussels with fries, which were clean, flavorful, and nicely prepared with garlic butter and white wine. We also tried the rustic seafood stew, which came loaded with clams, mussels, shrimp, lingcod and squid. It was hearty without feeling too heavy and had a nice depth of flavor. This spot never disappoints!!! And I love their clam chowder and get it every time. Brought the fam in for lunch and we're able to get seated right away. I started off with the bloody Mary and the boys had Shirley temples with 6 kumamoto oysters. We also had the fish and chips, old bay fries, and the acme bread. My husband and I stopped here to grab a small lunch. It was a beautiful day out so we ate outside. We both ordered their clam chowder soup. And OMG was it delicious. It came will lots of clans, HUGE chunks of potatoes, carrots, and bacon. It also was topped with some kind of pickled vegetables. It was by far the best clam chowder in SF. Amazing food wonderful service. The only thing that is something that should be prepared for our long lines because it's so popular here but there's a reason for that and they're all good. I love it and I will keep coming back to this one the one in March and the original one on tamales Bay. The staff was very helpful and accommodating to all our little questions and needs. This restaurant had a great view of the bridge, the bar area was pretty big and you could see the workers chuck oysters. it is a pricy spot I'm guessing good food comes with a price tag. We did order clam chowder and definitely was not expecting it to look like this at all. It's not a traditional bowl that's for sure, I really wish it came with bread to soak up the juice. When the server finally came around I mention to her I wish it had bread and I guess it's something that gets mentioned to purchase with it. Look if you're paying over $20 for some soup I think it should come with crackers or bread to go with it. The service wasn't bad, they did pick up our dirty plates which was nice. We did sit and have another beer after we ate. Overall it was good, would I go back? Probably not due to the pricing on a lot of the plates, and not a whole lot of options in my opinion. read more
We had dinner reservations elsewhere so we just got a couple of drinks and oysters. I really wanted to try the soup. Looked delicious. There was a Line to get in but it moved quickly. Note the line is for the bar too. If you sit outside in January, you get seated quickly. I got the Good neighbor cocktail and loved it. We got a the daily selection of 1/2 dozen oysters. Came here around 2 PM on a Friday and only waited about 5 minutes before being offered seats at the bar for two. We ordered a dozen mixed oysters, and our favorite was the West Passage oyster. We also tried the clam chowder, which had a ton of clams, and the seafood stew, which was flavorful and absolutely delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]One thing to add, it is quite loud inside the restaurant so I would opt for outdoor seating if possible.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Don't skip the Acme bread! Date of Visit: 2/8/2026 We visited the Hog Island Oyster Co on last Sunday, the day of Super Bowl. The restaurant was almost full but not packed, and we were able to got sited within 5 minutes. Bad Bunny $16 I ordered the featured cocktail Bad Bunny. Made with Blanco tequila, blueberry liquor, lemongrass, lavender, and lime. Hog Island Pilsner, Lost Coast Brewery $9 Grilled Oysters $48 We got 12 pieces of grilled oysters with 3 different flavors 4 of each. My favorite was the Garlic Parsley, and the mild spicy Chipotle Bourbon was good too. Rosemary Chili tasted very flavorful and paired great with beer and cocktail. Steamers with pasta $27 We also got the steamers with fresh Manila clams, fennel, smoked fish broth, herbs, garlic butter, and chili oil. Hi - you probably will want to call them on this since market price for oysters fluctuates and what may be accurate today won’t be next week.
If the weather is raining, are so you still have the guest sitting outside? Or it is possible to have indoor dining if it is raining?
They have an indoor dining available. As for an outside, I can't recall if they have any awning.
Do you need to show proof of vaccination to dine in?
Indoor dining is allowed only for those guests who can provide proof of full vaccination along with photo ID. Guests who cannot provide proof of vaccination are permitted to sit on the patio or may also take food for to go.
Are there any gluten-free and dairy-free options?
Yes, oysters are gluten and dairy-free!!!
Do you take reservations?
We do not take reservations at our Ferry Building location and all seating is via waitlist.
What is in that sauce they serve oysters with? It had onions and maybe parsley in it.
I believe it to be champagne vinegar, shallots and parsley. Known as sauce mignonette in France.
