Went for dinner this past Friday and it was the most disappointing part of my San Francisco trip. My friend picked this place mainly because of all the good reviews, which makes it even more disappointing. The hostess seemed like everyone was bothering her. We had to wait for a table (expected) so we had a couple different interactions with her and she said the absolute bare minimum in an irritated tone and both times I said "thank you" she just stared at me. Our waitress took a considerable amount of time to even come greet us. At greeting she already wanted us to order our food along with our beverages. It felt rushed after not being acknowledged. Once our main courses came we were never checked on until she brought the check. No water refills or anything until the check came and I had to ask. My friend started with the Hartford style clam chowder and it was the blandest chowder either of us had ever had. It honestly tasted like it came from a can. We did get this comped off, which was appreciated. The lobster roll my friend had was mostly all bread and mediocre tasting. Not worth the money at all. I had the squid ink spaghetti and it was completely flavorless other than the occasional burst of spice. It was spice without actual flavor though. Still one of my favorite seafood restaurants in the City. However, after not visiting in a while it seems as if they changed the recipe. I typically get the ceviche and tostadas. This time around I tasted a bit too much olive oil in both (I don't remember this before), and the salmon tacos had a bit too much butter. Both of these made the food a bit fatty. Woodhouse has a wonderful selection of fish and excellent service. It's a narrow restaurant with two rows of tables; because it's so popular it's often very busy. We wanted something quick and light before a movie. We ordered an artichoke bread starter as well a lobster roll and fish and chips as well as drinks. Meanwhile the place started to quickly fill up and our roll and fish and chips and drinks came promptly.. by the time we left the place had a line of people waiting. As we were halfway through we realized we hadn't received our starter and the waiter said it was coming. After another 5 min we reminded another waiter as our own waiter was definitely busy and they seemed understaffed. Finally not wanting the rest of the meal get cold we finished told them to cancel the bread and they said fine but then it came. Love the Tuesday oyster happy hour specials, did not love the lobster roll even with the anniversary month deal. The good: the fish tacos and the oysters (their only food that can dethrone the tacos). The fish tacos had more flavor than I thought was physically possible to pack into battered fish. This was easily the favorite dish of every diner I've come here with. Plus, they're big, like two-handed grip big. The oysters were deliciously creamy, sweet, and savory all at the same time and the Tuesday $1.25 deal is a steal. The ok/bad: most other menu items. Over a few visits, I've tried the cioppino and a couple items off their daily specials menu and none of them are dishes I'd go back for. I sure hope the lobster roll is better outside of April because I wouldn't order it again despite the $17 offer. The bread was excellent but the lobster had a dry texture, like it'd been defrosted slowly, and very little flavor. We got here by way of Yelp and it was around 12:30PM on a Friday afternoon. There were a lot of people there and we didn't know that there was a QR code to add ourselves to the waitlist, so we did just that. It said a 50-60 minute wait, and we waited for about 45-50 minutes. At first I had to ask others if it was worth the wait, but they didn't know either since it was their first time. The lobster sandwich was what drew my husband in. When we finally got seated, the restaurant was bustling with conversations and the seats were almost shoulder to shoulder. I definitely prefer more space. The service was surprisingly quick. Heads up: the lobster roll is small, so it you are a big eater, you need two, which is what my husband did. -Lobster roll x2: It was good, but not great. The bread was cold and so was the lobster. Excellent food! I got a cup of New England Clam Chowder as well as an order of the Salmon Tacos. Everything tasted super flavorful and fresh. Staff was amazing and attentive even during a very BUSY Saturday 4th of July weekend. Did I mention this was also during the Fillmore Jazz Fest?? They only take "reservations" within an hour or so once your full party arrives. The place is sort of small, so not the best place for a party of 8 or more. Thankfully, we were just a party of 4. Finally came back for their lobster rolls! For the entire month of April, lobster rolls are $17 each (limit 2 per person and dine in only) to celebrate their 17th anniversary. I had two of the hot lobster rolls with butter and it was very rich and buttery but the first roll had way more lobster butter (almost like dunking the roll in a lobster bisque!!) than the second, which was just buttery. The Woodhouse Fish is another well known San Francisco restaurant at Pac Heights. It is a pretty and clean looking place with a lot of marine decorations and a video about dangerous crabs. I like the fact that there was no waiting. We were seated and attended very quickly. They have about 30 or so seats but I was very impressed with the two staff handling all of the customers almost like a well played symphony. They seem to have an amazing awareness to their surroundings and not missing a beat. Cudos to the staff and the management. The food was delivered in a timely fashion and with proper utensils, extra paper towels and a bib without request. Two dishes we had were delicious. Neighborhood spot that I hadn't tried till more recently, but was really happy I did. Woodhouse Fish is a small spot on Fillmore that is often packed during the weekends. I came late at 8pm on a weekday for a small second dinner, and it was much quieter. I got the fish n chips and boy did I devour them -- perfectly light and crispy on the outside, flavorful, and tender fish. Probably some of the best fish n chips I've had, period. My partner also enjoyed his fried oyster roll. Will definitely be back in the future and hope to try more dishes. read more

They also gave us 2 dipping sauces: cocktail sauce and a creamy sauce. This was probably the best dish we had out of the 5. 5/5 DUNGENESS CRAB ROLL ~ Sadly, for the price, you only get a few bites and it's gone in a blink of an eye! It's about $4 per bite, considering it's $33! Bread was toasted, crab was heated, but it's way too expensive for what you get. It's good, but I wish they would give a little more to offset the cost to keep us happy. 3/5 ONION RINGS ~ 1/3 of an onion for this order. And the onion was cut really big, though it's typical. I didn't care for the batter. 2/5 3.5 stars in total. Service was average. Nothing spectacular or worth noting. The food was good, but some dishes were very pricey. I suppose, it's subjective when it comes to price, as some people would be okay to spend $33 on a crab sandwich that lasts 2 minutes.
