Food was excellent and came out fast. Fish was super fresh, tender, and juicy. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Liked the outdoor seating, the sunshine and breeze off the ocean made the experience even better. Would 100% come here again. Especially since it was easy and stress free getting in and out.

I was super excited to try Hook Fish and finally got the chance! We came by for Saturday lunch and luckily came early enough at opening to avoid a line and grabbed a seat on the patio. There's no indoor seating but there is an outdoor parket with some tables. I opted for the grilled fish of the day plate which was rockfish and it was super fresh and delicious! Loved the flaky, tender rockfish that was grilled to perfection and it paired well with rice, black beans, pico and a slaw. The spicy aioli gave it a nice creamy touch but it was the carrot habanero sauce on the table that really boosted the flavor and we all loved their house-made hot sauce! I also tried my friend's fish burrito which was great as well. It's essentially the same components on the plate, just wrapped in a house-made tortilla. Such a great spot for lunch and it would be just perfect on a sunny Californian day.

Upon arriving on a Sunday afternoon, I was met with the crowded seating and medium sized line at Hook Fish. My friend and I chose to mobile order for take-out and waited an hour for the food to be ready. This spot is by the beach and nearby to some fun shops so there was enough to do while waiting. Then comes the food itself. The fish was decent and had a nice fry on the batter, but the taste was boring. Maybe I'm just not a big fan of fish and chips but, without any sauce, it's just plain and boring. Their tartar sauce is quite good and the in-house hot sauce isn't bad, but even then it feels :/. The highlight of this is definitely the crisp on the batter. It's super satisfying and fun to eat. In contrast, the fries were quite soggy. Overall, I like the fry on the fish but otherwise :/

Really solid fish and chips. The fish was really crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and not greasy at all. The fish portion is large. The fries on the other hand were ok, they definitely needed to be dipped in ketchup. We ordered through the QR on the door and our order was ready in 30 min, the area is very cute there's a bookstore and surf shop near by and right down the street from ocean beach.

Ate sitting on a planter between a Ford F-150 and an Aloe Vera plant.

Fish and chips are delish! Their guacamole and chips are tasty too for an appetizer that's on so many menus. I was surprised to see it on their menu, but it was fresh and yummy and so were the chips. It's a popular spot, and seating is limited so you need to be willing to pull-up a curb or find a spot to stand to enjoy your meal. Takeout is an option but the fish and chips would be best enjoyed right as they come out. There is not much interaction with staff except to order your food and drinks. Kitchen staff is busy pumpin' out orders.

So happy there is a hook fish in the city. Fish burritos are a favorite and nice to have the kids option so I can also have some of their top-tier chips. Perfect thickness and crunch. So many amazing menu options and cute outdoor seating - can't go wrong here!

Hidden gem near the beach and such a great spot for a quality seafood meal, whether you want takeout or to eat there. It is in a convenient beach area location with nearby street parking, although the limit is only one hour. The ordering process is very simple. You walk in, place your order at the counter on the left, and then wait to be called when your food is ready for pickup. Water is also available right next to the pickup area. It is an easy and straightforward setup that makes the whole experience feel casual and stress-free. There is outdoor seating only and no indoor seating, so keep in mind that it can get a little breezy because of the beach weather. The menu offers a great variety of fish dishes, including burritos, plates, tacos, fish and chips, and more. We both ordered plates, and even though the portions looked small at first, they were actually very filling and kept us full for the rest of the day. I also really appreciated that the sauces came on the side. For the poke, tuna is the only fish option, but it was delicious and worked perfectly. We also ordered a side salad for $7 to add some fiber, and surprisingly, it was one of the best things we had. I could honestly see myself coming back just for the salad. Overall, it is a spot I would definitely return to. Next time, I would probably grab takeout and bring it to the beach or even Golden Gate Park for a picnic.

    Albacore tuna poke tacos
    Olivia C.

Hook Fish is on many must-try SF restaurant lists, so naturally, I had pretty high expectations. But unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype. Came by on an early evening during a weekday so the wait was only around 10-15 minutes after ordering. I ordered the poke tacos ($20 for an order of 2) and a pineapple mint agua fresca ($3.50). Seating is all outdoors and quite limited, so we took our food to-go and ate it in the car. The pineapple mint agua fresca was super disappointing. All the agua frescas were already prepped and poured out into cups which in hindsight should've been a red flag.... It came with no ice and was barely colder than room temperature. The drink was quite pulpy but strangely had no pineapple flavor whatsoever. Ended up tasting like lukewarm minty water. Now, onto the poke tacos: These are definitely the priciest tacos I've had ($10 per taco?!?) so the flavor and quality had to deliver to justify these prices. But they were just... okay. Would've preferred a lime wedge over the lemon wedge they gave. The albacore tuna was fresh and didn't taste fishy. The pico de gallo and slaw were pretty standard, although I didn't taste the pickled flavor from the slaw. I also couldn't taste much of the spicy aioli, but that's probably because I chose to have it on top instead of on the side. I'd say that the overall presentation and preparation of these tacos could've been more thoughtful. For instance, the tacos got quite soggy from the pico. It would definitely help to have 2 tortillas instead of 1. The avocado came in a chunk on top of each taco and kept slipping out when eating. I think it would've been better to cut the avocado into smaller slices instead of one chunk. Small details like these made it not as enjoyable of an experience to eat. Ultimately, these tacos were not worth the steep price. Perhaps their fish and chips are better in terms of both flavor and value, but I unfortunately don't see myself returning in the near future.

Close up - rockfish sandwich $13

Introduced Hook Fish to boyfriend because he's always searching for the best fish and chips and Hook Fish knocked theirs out of the park. It was halibut on the day that we went which is a nice meaty fish. The batter was the super star! It was so thin but shattered perfectly. The fish was buttery and tender. Would have again and again! We also had the tacos and the sandwich. Both were good but missed the mark just a tad bit. The fish on the tacos was a little overdone and the sandwich was wet. The bun was super soggy and couldn't really be picked up, perhaps because of the amount of slaw. Still good flavors though. We were lucky to snag a table outside but wow, Hook Fish could use some more umbrellas for these sunny days. The sun really beats down on you on those warm days and it feels nice at first but oppressive as time goes on. It may have been a better idea to just get it to go and walk the bit down to the beach.

Fish and chips, and crab cakes
    Kelvin R.

The fish and chips is really good, the fish is crispy well done, fries are good too. Crab cakes are a horrible deal however. They are tiny and for the same price you could get a two piece fish and chips. DONT get the crab cake get fish and chips. Ambiance is pretty nice just can be rather difficult to get a table.

Very crowded on a Thursday afternoon around noon, but worth the wait! Casual spot with limited outdoor seating. Order at the register inside, then pick up food at the counter facing the sidewalk. I recommend taking the food to go and sitting at the bookstore across the street or walking the two short blocks down to the beach. I tried the fish and chips and ceviche. The fish and chips were wonderful, the fish tasted fresh and tender, and the batter was salty with a good crunch. You do have to open the box pretty quickly otherwise the heat from the fries makes the fish batter soggy. The fries are a large portion and seasoned. They are on the thicker side, which is my preference, but would disappoint those who like a thinner, crispier fry. Fish comes with fresh tartar sauce, and you can ask for ketchup and hot sauce. The ceviche has calamari and what appeared to be salmon in it, served over tortilla chips. I enjoyed the strong citrus flavor, but it's mostly chips. It would be okay as an appetizer, I would not recommend it as an entree. Overall I was very pleased to find a solid fish and chips location and will be back!

I've always wanted to try this place, but every time I come, the wait is so long! This time, we planned to come here and ordered ahead of time. Definitely recommend this because it still took 30 minutes for our order to be ready. The best item was the 3 piece fish and chips ($23), which were super crispy, flaky, and tender. It's the best I've ever had, but the fish was pretty greasy. I was also underwhelmed by the grilled fish of the day burrito ($18) because it lacked a lot of flavor and the texture was overtaken by the rice. I relied a lot on the habanero hot sauce to help add something to the burrito. I'm still giving this place 4 stars because the fish tasted really fresh. I would come back for more fish and chips and to try more of their menu items.

    Yes

Is any sure about the gluten free question, my friend cannot tolerate even cross contamination?

Hi Katie. I'd call them and ask. They seem very flexible. I bet they would add bacon or skip it depending on your preference.

Do they have a high chair for infants?

    Yes

Is the outside dining area dog friendly?

    Yes it is..

    What the phone number?

    (628) 256-0454... it doesn't seem like they pick up at all

Are they offering indoor dining? I know it's a small spot inside but just curious

Yes, there is an enclosed area that includes the bar. It is still pretty open and breezy though.

Do they deliver? I can't find anything that states if they deliver or just do takeout. I see a menu for "online orders" but can't tell.

None of their locations do delivery- it's just all take out! I called to double check :)

Do you sell fish as a market?

Only the ones they have on display but more of a restaurant

Is the renovation done? Are they currently open?

Not sure what u mean by renovation but they are open for takeout. Not indoor dining though

    Is there parking around?

We haven't had trouble finding street parking near by - it might take a lap or two, but it's never been too bad

A coworker recommended this place, and now I recommend it to everyone. What stands out is the balance--everything is done well. The meat is rich and flavorful, the tacos themselves are just as good, and the consommé ties everything together perfectly. I've tried places where one part is strong but something else falls short, but not here. You also get free sides like onions, cactus, radish, and beans, which make the meal even better. I've been coming back ever since, and I can easily finish three tacos in one sitting. On my most recent visit, I had two birria tacos and tried their birria ramen. It was surprisingly good--comforting and flavorful, more like a homemade dish than anything instant. For drinks, I've tried all their jugos, and the jamaica is the standout--get it in a large. Service: Friendly, efficient, and straightforward. Orders come out at a good pace, and the staff keep things moving even when it's busy. We asked about the consommé and I don't know if they just forgot it or what happened but we never got to try it. The shrimp taco was tasty and absolutely filled with again generous amount of shrimps. Ironically, it wasn't my favorite. It just was lacking the level of flavor that I really wanted. The Carne Asada was mediocre at best and not something that I would order again. The winner out of the numerous items that we ordered was the pork belly and the Al pastor. Between the two, the Al pastor is the one that you want. Incredibly well seasoned, a nice hint of light spice, the meat was juicy and tender, and the combination in the taco was outstanding. Seriously so good that my mouth is watering just thinking about how tasty it was. The chips were nothing to write home about, and I didn't really care for salsas that came with the meal. Really reasonably priced, generous amount of food, and absolute worth the push in enjoying their food! We came for the Al Pastor but was wowed by the Lengua. Asada quesadilla was also good, especially when you bite into a fatty piece of Carne with cartilage :D

I cannot sing the praises of this place enough and am worry that you all will ruin it by going. But I've got to give credit where it is due. Plenty of varieties of seafood dishes but it's the al pastor negro that I loooooooove! My friends dragged me here and I'm so glad I came, even though I never did when I use to live not too far away. Now, I live 30 minutes away and have to drive far over a highway to come but it's so worth it! Bravo! Gracias, Chefs Hector Ordaz y David Pacheco and Manager Norbeto Granillo (it's on their business and catering card). You can tell they take PRIDE in this taqueria!

The sauce that was on top was a cream fresh or aioli type of sauce. I really enjoyed it on my taco. The steak wasn't as good. Very mid no real flavor to the steak and I added salt to it for more flavor. The tortillas thy use for the tacos were extremely yummy , very happy with the quality of them. I added the orange sauce to my steak taco and it wasn't spicy which I was hoping for. The agua de horchata was okay it consisted a lot more of the leche condensada. I would recommend getting a different fresh water. I went today later in the day I was the only client in there so I didn't get to experience a lively atmosphere so I can only really speak on the food and wait time.
