We had heard good things about Ernesto's and when a friend suggested meeting there for lunch on a weekday we finally tried it. It's located a block or so into Versalles from Francisco Villa, in a very nondescript area. Our visit was in late April after the tourist crowds mostly had departed which might explain why the restaurant was deserted of other customers upon our arrival. The entry gate was closed and if it weren't for a barking dog inside we would have guessed the restaurant was closed. However a proprietor showed up and let us in. The restaurant is rather basic in decor, but fairly spacious and open air, with a rooftop to keep the sun away. The menu is fairly typical with Mexican items. I started with a margarita, which seemed bargained priced compared with just about any other place in Vallarta. Well, honestly it was the worst margarita I've ever been served in Vallarta, and close to the worst margarita I've ever tasted anywhere. Not a good start. The restaurant is known for their chicken tortilla soup so I ordered a "small" sized bowl. It was quite large and delicious. Not the best in town but very satisfying nonetheless. The three of us liked our meals, which were well seasoned and flavorful. I had the Baja shrimp tacos which were loaded with good sized shrimp. A companion liked his hamburger and fries. We also enjoyed a large bowl of chips which came with a generous amount of pico. Prices were certainly fair. A sign located in the restaurant stated that they run weekly "all you can eat" rib dinners on Thursdays and Saturdays. It might be worth a return visit to try that. All in all while the food was good there are better places to enjoy a meal and drinks in this general neighborhood.

We have been in Puerto Vallarta for 10 days visiting from United States California to be exact. Although it did take a little bit of work to find this place, it was totally worth it The tortilla soup is seriously the best tortilla soup I have ever had . My husband had the fajitas they were amazing, and I had the breaded shrimp, and enjoyed every single bite If I ever come back to PV, I will definitely come back to Ernesto's Good Grub.

A little hard to find, but when you find it WOW!!! Ribs were awesome, tortilla soup was probably the best we have ever seen and tasted. And I have never gotten a salad quite like the one we got the tomatoes were peeled, there was mango, oranges, craisens, cucumbers, and Lettuce, so good! A genuine friendly experience, feels like you are eating at a relatives backyard (that's a good thing) also if your uber/taxi gets lost its across the street from Servicio Pan Americano de Protección at the corner

My wife's family have lived and vacationed in Puerto Vallarta for the last 30+ years and this one of the restaurants they take visitors to when people are in town and looking for a place to eat. It is a Family owned restaurant with very friendly and attentive wait staff. My In-Law's also remember Ernesto very fondly, who was always watching American Football when they went in if there was a game on. Everything is made to order fresh and you can taste this in every dish we had. I didn't have it but my wife is an expert on tortilla soup and she absolutely Loved it as did everyone else that ordered it. The bowl was huge. The ribs are Great, the chips and pico de gallo is made fresh and are out of this world. I also tried their cheeseburger on our 2nd visit there (as a change of pace) which was outstanding and the fries were awesome. This restaurant is definitely one to try when you are in Puerto Vallarta.

    Garden Salad. It's huge!

There are places that simply serve food--and then there are places that become part of your story…read more Pepe's Tacos is exactly that for me. Having come here since I was 10 years old, this iconic taquería isn't just a local favorite--it's a timeless institution that continues to define what truly exceptional tacos should be. Since 1987, Pepe's has built a reputation that extends far beyond Puerto Vallarta, and one visit is all it takes to understand why. The star of the show--their legendary tacos al pastor--is nothing short of extraordinary. The pork is expertly marinated and cooked to perfection, resulting in meat that is incredibly juicy, tender, and bursting with deep, savory flavor. Each slice is carved with precision and layered onto warm tortillas, creating a perfect foundation for what comes next. What truly elevates these tacos is the balance of toppings. The sweetness of the pineapple and the sharpness of the fresh onions cut through the richness of the meat beautifully, enhancing every bite with contrast and complexity. It's a masterclass in simplicity done right--every ingredient playing its role to perfection. Beyond the food, the experience itself is just as memorable. The service is impressively fast and efficient, especially considering how popular this spot is, and there's an undeniable energy in the air that makes it feel alive at all hours. It's the kind of place you can count on for a late-night bite, where the atmosphere is casual, vibrant, and always welcoming. Pepe's Tacos isn't about reinvention or trend--it's about consistency, tradition, and delivering excellence time and time again. Decades later, it still holds its place as one of the best taco spots in Puerto Vallarta, and for good reason. Some things never change--and when they're this good, they absolutely shouldn't.

Out front, the trompo spins over charcoal fire, hand turned, on display to the street. The man at the blade is a performer, part craftsman, part showman. He hones his knife between razor thin shavings of al pastor, then in a reflexive flourish nips the pineapple crowning the meat, sending a sliver flying only to catch it with a tortilla. It is theater, but it is also instinct. Inside, the crowd looks like the United Nations. A tour group from India next to a Dutch family with half a dozen kids in tow, the Canadians eye the Americans with deserved suspicion, and a few locals whose plates are piled high while tourists settle for modest portions. It is the natural order of things, and nobody complains. The charcoal scent in the meat makes clear this is al pastor's intended preparation. I have never had the pleasure of eating from a coal fired trompo before, and it is instantly apparent that this is the way it was meant to be. Someday, somehow, I will rig one of these up, because I need this in my life. Pepe's is not just a taco shop. It is a master class in tradition, theater, and flavor, with a dining room that feels like the world gathered around one spit.

While the wait can be a bit unpredictable, it's usually not too long, especially during the summer. However, if you visit in the winter, it can take a while. The food here is reasonably priced and the portions are generous. The only thing that confuses me is the fruit water of the day. The cups are incredibly small, and for 30 pesos, I expected more. I've noticed that some tables have their water refilled, while others have been changed. I'm not sure if this is a policy or just a coincidence. The service is okay, but nothing extraordinary. They have a limited number of tables and don't have air conditioning, so it can get quite hot inside and outside. However, you're here to eat and go, so don't expect a sit-down experience. One important thing to note is that they only accept cash. So, make sure to bring some pesos with you.

It's thicker, more cheesy than what I've ever had before and very delicious. We paired that with the prime rib tacos, it was a plate stacked with meat and 4 tortillas under it, more than we could eat. The seasoning was great, it was diced so small that it was easy to eat. The ribeye had so much fat that we had to pick through it just to eat it. The al pastor was very average - I've had much better at plenty of other taco spots. The biggest disappointment was the chorizo. It wasn't traditional chorizo at all; it looked and tasted more like chopped-up hot dogs. We barely touched it because it wasn't what we ordered expecting, and it just wasn't good. The presentation also wasn't appealing. The meat was simply piled on top of two tortillas, making everything messy and difficult to eat. They were also pretty stingy with the grilled jalapeños. The salsas didn't do the food any favors either. None of them really stood out, and the green guacamole salsa actually tasted like it had gone bad, so we stopped eating it. Service was attentive, but almost too attentive. Staff kept coming by every few minutes to ask if we were finished or if we needed anything. While I appreciate good service, it made us feel like we were being rushed through our meal instead of being able to enjoy it at our own pace. Overall, I don't understand the high ratings based on our experience. With so many amazing taco spots in Puerto Vallarta, this one didn't come close to meeting the hype. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back.
