My 2015 Silverado with AFM (active fuel management) developed lifter ticking at 93,000 miles, this destroyed the cam shaft and a stuck lifter. Being retired I could not afford a new vehicle, so after recommendations from a retired Jasper engine installer, and another friend that had his engine replaced, I called Ernie, and after the first phone call, he makes you feel warm and fuzzy knowing they are capable of this huge task. Enjoy having Ernie's Automotive servicing our cars on and off over the cars. I would say that they are honest in what they do and really attempt to help you out. As with any service, it is good to get a quote in person on the work that needs to be done. The pricing seems higher than most although the work get done. It would be always best to come in with to talk to them about your car issues so that any service person would know that you are serious about fixing your car. I am sure they get tons of phones. Best to check there schedule to see if they can fit you in on the day of service. They are often busy and so that a good thing and I don't believe they are working on weekends. Good idea for them to have a weekend off and great position to be in. They are a reliable source to get your car worked on and seem like good people. Only amateurs work at Ernie's automotive. If you want your car messed up you should definitely bring it there. Top dollar no lube. Idiots welcome. I literally watched a grown man work on my car after they messed it up while on a FaceTime with another person telling him what to do. I mean really. I wouldn't count them out totally, they could probably change your windshield wipers, clean your windows, fill the air in your tires, or even fill your gas tank. Nice and honest people. They are not cheap but they have very reasonable prices. I had a small nail in my tire and they took my car in right away. They didn't pressure me at all into getting something done on my car. I ended up getting new brakes and oil change as it was due. Also they fixed my trunk that had some issue with its hindge. Work done is reliable, so far no complain. Needless to say that I found my new mechanic shop. read more

Brought my 1996 (!!) 4Runner in for servicing the springs and shocks; they did the job quickly and completely - they told me beforehand that only one shock needed replacement, but I went with the whole thing anyway - those were the ORIGINAL OEM shock and springs, and the car has over 300,000 miles (yay Toyota!!). The mechanics were great, fair and did the job quickly and as quoted... will be my main "go to" mechanic for all of our cars! read more

Not one person in this place wearing a mask even though they had a sign on the door saying that customers needed to be masked. The employees refused to put one on when they came out to talk to us-- didn't even have one. Really scary and stressful situation. My windshield wipers decided to suddenly quit working on a rainy day...bad news. I Googled an auto shop close to where I was located, since I'm from out of town and haven't established a mechanic yet - safe to say I've got one now! I walked into Ernie's and was greeted by Larry, who handed my keys off right away - I didn't have to wait, which surprised and delighted me since they looked busy. 45 minutes later, they had temporarily fixed the issue (exactly what I wanted since my dad is a mechanic in Southern Illinois and I just needed a temp. fix to get me home). They didn't try to convince me I needed a new this or a new that, they just fixed it like any good shop would do. I LOVE this local business! Three generations of family working there, and they talk to you like you're a real person. Fair price, quick service, and they didn't make me feel like an idiot! I took my car to Ernie's to have him check out the transmission. When they got back to me they said that it would cost so much (it was a very high amount). But, I needed the car so, I went ahead and told them to do the work. When I picked up the car, I found paperwork in it showing that another transmission place did the work and not Ernie's. The price that Ernie's paid to have my transmission fixed was about half of what they ultimately charged me. Bait and switch and they walked away with about $400.00 for simply taking my car over to the transmission place that they had do the work. Total scam. read more

Ernies is a top notch shop. They specialize in Domestic cars but they still know they're way around other cars. My wife and her family have been going there forever and now I know why. We took our Mazda in for a brake job and they were honest about the work that needed to be done no replacing the calipers, they cut the rotors vs replacing and the price was right. When my wife thought that the windshield wiper motor was burned out she took it to them and all that was wrong was the arms came loose they fixed it for free right on the spot. I had my truck towed to Ernie's to have it check out to see why it was not shifting into gear. They said they would look at it the next morning but they didn't. I did not receive a call until the next afternoon and they told me i would need a new transmission and wanted to charge me $3300.00. I decided that was way to much money and told them i would take it some where else. When i came to pick up the truck i notice that it look like it had not been moved and was in the same parking spot. When i went inside to ask them how they knew the trans went bad and it was not something else he had no answer. I ask them did they check the pan or drop the trans, they said no and would not give my keys until i paid them $85.00 for doing nothing, other then saying the trans was bad with out even putting the truck on the lift or even look at it.They just guest and never did anything other then charging me for no work at all (pretty disgusting) and turn out to be something else that only cost me $350.00 to fix. I been a customer of theirs for ten years and never thought they would become dishonest and rip-off artist. That's the last time i will ever do business with them, i hope the $85.00 was worth it. If they keep treating people like this,they will soon lose their customers and put themselves out of business. read more

I went here looking to get some exhaust work done. I left the car at 7:30 AM and didn't get an estimate until 6 hours later and the work couldn't even be done until the next day. They wanted $800+ to do a catback replacement on the exhaust, which isn't that unreasonable for that type of work. However, I took my car elsewhere to get a second opinion and they said the pipe only needed to be fixed in a few spots. The other place said the muffler was fine and charged me $100 for the repairs. read more
