Large Ernie's peppersteak all the way
    Felicia C.

It's an institution! If you're from Greenville, NC or spend time in Greenville, NC then it is an IYKYK situation! I've been eating this since I was a little girl. I can't lie the taste has changed over the years. The Ernie's of today is not quite the same Ernie's from 40 years ago. The nostalgia is real! Pro tip: Call ahead. Give it 15-20 minutes before you head over. Yes, you can order in but you'll be waiting 15-20 minutes. No worries. They keep your sub warm in the oven. What you want is the large Ernie's peppersteak all the way. If you're 'llergic to onions then no onions is fine. Otherwise don't deviate. Wait. If you're weird like my sister and don't like "salad" on your sandwiches you can get meat & cheese. Oh, I don't know what peppersteak is! It favors ground beef. It's not shaved beef like in a cheesesteak. Don't question it. Just eat it! When I finally figure it out I'll update the review. But uh ruhhhh I've been eating these for easily 40 years and still don't know.

When I travel to see my family in Greenville, NC I always get at least one meal from Ernie's Famous Subs. With work I spend a lot of time in local restaurants all over the country and I can assure you that there isn't a better Peppersteak found anywhere! You MUST order it all the way .. the secret seasoning is amazing .. the banana peppers add the perfect touch and the bread is perfection! There is little seating at this local institution .. and always packed so call ahead 15 mins before you drive over! Can't wait to go back!

THE BEST PEPPER STEAK IN THE STATE!!!

The best Pepper Steak in North Carolina! Not up for debate... Whenever we're in Greenville, we always buy 2. Although there's nothing like a fresh one straight out the oven.. Normally I don't eat Banana Peppers or Onions on a sandwich but at Ernie's: LARGE PEP STEAK ALL THE WAY PLEASE!

First timer here. I've had a lot of subs in my life. Their Peppersteak Sub with everything on it is easily in my top 3 all-time. Could very well be #1. I think bread is the make or break ingredient in a sub and I can say without a doubt that their bread is perfect. Absolutely perfect. Light, crunchy and soft all at once. It is ideal sub bread. The peppersteak juices that absorb into the bread with the perfect amount of mayo made every single bite spectacular. It's going to be difficult for me to not go here everyday for lunch while I'm in town. I cannot say enough. AND THE ONION RINGS!? Are you kidding me!? Easily the best onion rings on plant earth. I challenge you to find better. 11/10. Cannot score this "hole in the wall" gem high enough. Service was quick and efficient. Drop what you're doing and go NOW.

    Packaged to go!

You can't go wrong with ordering from Ernie's! I discovered this place a couple of years ago while I was working in Greenville. At first glance you wouldn't realize what a gem it is, but the food is incredible! I'm a fan of their Pepper Steak AND the Cheese Steak sandwiches, ordered "all the way." They are absolutely wonderful and you won't find a sub this good anywhere else in Eastern North Carolina! Make sure to call and order ahead since they're made fresh and there's usually a line. It's first come, first served, like any restaurant, so plan ahead if your lunch break is short. It's an original walk-up grill, so seating isn't available inside. However it's covered to keep customers comfortable and out of the weather.

I rarely give 5 stars and this play deserves 6. An outstanding restaurant and definitely a hole in the wall place. On the outside it looks like a busted up shop and it is but the food makes up for it. Not a sit down place at all, great spot for lunch and the service was pretty decent. The value for this $11 meal is beyond me. I could stretch this out for 2 meals and I'd be good. The manager is really nice and was working the counter with a smile and passion. I highly recommend the small sub combo all the way, you won't regret it!

Food takes some time as each are made to order but worth it. Nice and helpful staff at the counter. The Deets: I had the chance recently to go tailgating before an ECU football game, and my friends that regularly do so recommended Pirate's Deli so we stopped on our way to the game. This deli is fairly good sized with a extended menu of offerings on a board around two of the walls near the ordering counter/pickup area. The staff was nice and helpful when ordering. I looked over all the great and plentiful choices, finding the NY Yankee Chicken Cutlet Sandwich (breaded chicken, bacon, melted Swiss, lettuce/tomato, with honey mustard) which looked just right for me. Orders do take a while to come up as each are made to order and there were a few people ahead of us already getting their game day selections. Our orders were out soon enough and we were off to tailgate. The sandwich was very good...just messy enough to be interesting but not chaos to eat and the components came together for a great tasting combination (see pic). I was pretty satisfied with this sandwich and would definitely get this one again. Everyone one else felt the same about their food selections as well. In all, a good stop into Pirate's Deli to secure some tailgating eats before the game.

However, I'm glad to say my instincts were completely wrong on this one. My business colleagues told me all the ingredients are locally sourced, and the based of taking diner food and making it a little more modern (without the pretentiousness). The space matches the concept - modern diner. I tried the following: - Daily Bread: Very good. Nothing like freshly bread and butter. - Spaetzle Mac & Cheese: Excellent. I've had spaetzle and and I've had mac & cheese, and this was as good as interpretation of mac & cheese I've ever had. A lot of my colleagues thought this was the most memorable dish of the night. - Pickled Things: Good. I always like trying new things, and pickled blueberries and fried saltines were new to me. Really nice surprises. - Daily NC Catch (Trout): Very good. Trout was just as perfect as can be with a nice crispy sear on the skin, and meat was still tender. The risotto underneath was good, but a bit over-seasoned. Service was incredible. The server was interactive, fun, attentive and doing a masterful job of single-handedly managing a table of over 12 people, which is never easy. Overall, a great meal. Really great food with service that made us feel like restaurant regulars. If I happen to visit Greenville NC again, I would definitely make sure to return.

We started with 1/2 dozen oysters (delicious) and an order of Pickled Things (really large enough for 4). For entrees we had the steak special (perfectly cooked but inexplicably didn't include any accompanying sides) and the fish special that included bouillabaisse in the description but was really a bed of flavored rice (good but a little too much vinegar). Overall tasty food with friendly staff, but I'm not sure I'd seek it out.

The fruit cup looked like it had been frozen and had odd white specks all over it. Took that back to the front and got some Cheetos. Spring mix on my sandwich was absolutely foul - slimy and old. Cucumbers in the salad were so old they were wet and the one that got into my mouth was bitter and soft. When I brought that back to the manager there was no apology, no offer to make things right for a $14 sandwich/salad - just yelled back to the kitchen that they needed to throw those cucumbers away. There are really great McAlister's locations out there - this is not one of them. The place was nearly empty on a Sunday afternoon, so I assume everyone else has already figured out what we learned: this location is poorly managed and has no quality control. You're better off lighting a $20 bill outside than spending it on food inside. BTW manager: we notified the health department that you're serving food that is unsafe to eat.

At first, I was unsure if they were still an operating business post pandemic, but I returned during working hours on another day and was so pleased to find out they were! The parking lot was pretty full as it seemed several people were eating inside while many were taking their meals to go. This restaurant and bakery is conveniently located in the medical district. There are delicious, fresh made breads, sandwiches, and desserts available daily at such a low and affordable price! They also take custom orders (see my pictures) with advance notice. I was very pleased at what I ordered from here - a chicken salad sandwich on fresh sour dough bread, a bag of chips, and gooey butter cake for dessert. All for $8 packed nicely in a box. It was so hard to choose the dessert as there were about 10 different options, all of which appeared well made. This place is exactly what I like - options for chicken salad, egg salad, pimento cheese... No frills or fancy stuff, just good food that tastes like it was made at home for an affordable price. This is great for folks who work nearby and have some time for lunch or even those who want to treat a loved one for a special lunch in a box! I cannot wait to come back here to eat soon!
