Now this was a whole vibe and very much so one hell of an experience that I won't soon forget! Right in the middle of our coaster trip we stopped here on our way to the next adventure and instantly we felt the love from the local community as it was very apparent that they have a very dedicated local following here as there was a few people waiting in line to order with a few more coming in those that came in had a trophy with them celebrating their cousin for being the best and they totally let everyone know it with the staff here calling them by name and just being all for it, then this guy out of no where asks me for a sip of my drink I say it's not mine but my lady's he's like oh she makes the decisions I say yes you better believe it he just starts laughing then his wife tells him to behave as the staff hands him his drink. Those inline then started just talking to us and out of nowhere again one of the staff working says you know them and the lady he was talking to says yes they are friends of mine and we all just chilled in this counter area talking and having an awesome time waiting for our food to be done overall awesome vibes here all around! Now that pepper steak sandwich wow that's good like it was soo flavorful and yummy it had a ton of pepper steak on it that was mixed with some type of sauce that just soaked into it making each bite just that much better than the one before and not to mention it was packed with some veggies too as well as banana peppers to set the vibe even more! Seriously though don't count out that bread that was some delicious bread with a good crunch to it that totally held up to an already strong delicious sandwich! Overall this was an amazing stop with vibes and one of the best sandwich's I've ever had I really hope to get back here again at some point because that flavor was there in more than one way seriously just soo good! read more

The last several times my order has NEVER been right!!!! And this is the last time that they receive my business but of course they don't care!!! I do because in this economy food is too expensive, to throw in the trash because it's not edible!!! Does this look like VERY VERY light seasoning to you??? EVERY SINGLE TIME they have what it looks like (dumped the entire spice rack on the sub) the meat is inconsistent as well: either way to spicy it burns your mouth and lips, bland or tastes like dishwater. I can't lie the taste has changed over the years. The Ernie's of today is not quite the same Ernie's from 40 years ago. The nostalgia is real! Pro tip: Call ahead. Give it 15-20 minutes before you head over. Yes, you can order in but you'll be waiting 15-20 minutes. No worries. They keep your sub warm in the oven. What you want is the large Ernie's peppersteak all the way. If you're 'llergic to onions then no onions is fine. Otherwise don't deviate. Wait. If you're weird like my sister and don't like "salad" on your sandwiches you can get meat & cheese. Oh, I don't know what peppersteak is! It favors ground beef. First timer here. I've had a lot of subs in my life. Their Peppersteak Sub with everything on it is easily in my top 3 all-time. Could very well be #1. I think bread is the make or break ingredient in a sub and I can say without a doubt that their bread is perfect. Absolutely perfect. Light, crunchy and soft all at once. It is ideal sub bread. The peppersteak juices that absorb into the bread with the perfect amount of mayo made every single bite spectacular. You can't go wrong with ordering from Ernie's! I discovered this place a couple of years ago while I was working in Greenville. At first glance you wouldn't realize what a gem it is, but the food is incredible! I'm a fan of their Pepper Steak AND the Cheese Steak sandwiches, ordered "all the way." They are absolutely wonderful and you won't find a sub this good anywhere else in Eastern North Carolina! Make sure to call and order ahead since they're made fresh and there's usually a line. It's first come, first served, like any restaurant, so plan ahead if your lunch break is short. It's an original walk-up grill, so seating isn't available inside. On the outside it looks like a busted up shop and it is but the food makes up for it. Not a sit down place at all, great spot for lunch and the service was pretty decent. The value for this $11 meal is beyond me. I could stretch this out for 2 meals and I'd be good. The manager is really nice and was working the counter with a smile and passion. I never like to give a one star rating, but Ernie's Famous Subs earned it. I arrived at approx. 8:45 on a Friday night. The hours according to the menu is that they are open until 10:30 pm. Went to the counter and was told someone will take my order in a moment. The delay was because employees were busy on a stainless steel prep table dividing money from the tip jar. When someone finally asked me for my order, I was told my choice, meatballs, were not available. Neither were any cold cuts. Again, this is before 9 pm on a place that says it is open until 10:30 pm. We did discover that roast beef was available, and I ordered a small sub with cheese, salt, pepper and mustard. While I was waiting, a few others came in to pick up called in orders. These orders, as well as some stainless steel containers, were being kept warm in what seemed to be a food oven - not a typical warming oven. Seemed to me that if a careless person adjusted the temperature that these wrapped and bagged items could catch on fire. I got my order and went to my hotel room to eat. The sandwich was prepared wrong. No cheese, no mustard, but had onions and peppers. Will not go here again. read more

Came here for lunch after constantly seeing droves of people here day after day. I wondered what was so delicious inside and decided I would give it a shot. I ordered the Peppersteak combo with fries and pepper relish and a Pepsi. After about 20 minutes, my order was ready. I was so excited to try this local delicacy. I unwrapped it and for once, I managed to snap a few pictures before I dug in. The sandwich had great flavor overall but the meat was a bit tough and had a texture more like overcooked hamburger rather than steak and needed some additional seasoning. The fries were well cooked and crisp but also needed a bit of seasoning. Other than that, it was still a solid and perfectly edible meal that only set me back about $10. I recommend this place and would probably ask for my steak a bit rarer when ordering in the future. It doesn't look like much, outside or in, but one taste of the food and I am sure you'll understand why this place is frequently packed throughout the day. On the recommendation of my fellow Yelpers, I tried the peppersteak sub. Heck yes, give me that again, please! My usual go-to is an Italian sub, and I fortunately got to try one anyway since that's what my honey ordered. Good stuff, but no comparison to the awesome peppersteak.
