I don't have a comparison as this was my first Escape room, but I had a fun time and am eager to try more! I'll start with the only negative: we started 40 minutes after our scheduled time. There is a comfortable waiting area though. Booking online is a breeze. The staff that assisted us was helpful in both keeping us updated on our wait and when it came to clues. We did "The Black Widow". It was frustrating at first because we kept coming up empty, but once we got going, we were on a roll. As a group of just two, we still completed the room with about one minute to spare! I'd definitely return to try other rooms but I'm also eager to try another location entirely for comparison! read more

My kids and I went on a quest determined to escape the pitfall of the earth and make it back to civilization. After a few hints, we escaped and had four minutes to spare to tell our tale. This place is fantastic! We were scheduled for an earlier time but couldn't make it because my car decided to have an adventure of its own. The host moved us to a later time, and glad I didn't reschedule for a different day. It was fun, and my kids had a blast! I also love that each room is private, so you can enjoy it with your family if you don't want to mingle with the public. Go check them out. First time at Escape Quest! After check-in, we relax in the comfortable waiting room before being led to our escape room. The moderator explains the house rules and reminds us that if we are stuck, we can ask for a hint up to three times. The King Ransom escape room is ranked 8/10 in difficulty. Every great escape room must have a backstory to set the mood: You and your loyal band of Knights have been entrusted with a difficult mission: to uncover a concealed trove of gold and rescue the King from a deadly fate. His chambers are teeming with enigmas that shield his most prized possessions. Our quest is to locate the gold, escape the room, and deliver the ransom before the King's captors carry out his execution. DO NOT BOOK HERE! Absolutely unacceptable. I made a group reservation at Escape Quest for six people, paid $250.85 in advance, and showed up on time--only to find the door locked and the place completely abandoned. No staff, no sign, no explanation. Just... nothing. This was especially devastating because my 6-year-old nephew, visiting from Connecticut, was beyond excited for his first-ever escape room experience--only to be met with sheer disappointment. We tried calling every number listed, but no one answered, and there wasn't even an option to leave a message. After 20 minutes of frustration, we gave up. Thankfully, Escape Live down the street was not only open (imagine that!), but they were also amazing and able to accommodate us last-minute. When we told them what happened, they weren't surprised--apparently, Escape Quest has a habit of randomly not showing up and leaving customers stranded. Save yourself the frustration and go straight to Escape Live instead. Escape Quest is unreliable, unprofessional, and undeserving of your time or money. read more

After an amazing first experience at Escape Quest, our second visit was a complete letdown. They were understaffed, so the puzzle master was unavailable when we needed help. Several aspects of the puzzles didn't work, including a flashlight essential to progressing in the game. With no one to assist, we had to use a cellphone flashlight, which broke the immersion. One puzzle we wasted time as we tried to figure out why a correct solution wasn't working. To make matters worse, the hints (when we were finally able to get them) were irrelevant and lagged several steps behind where we were in the puzzle. The combination of broken mechanics, lack of support, and unhelpful hints made the experience frustrating rather than fun. read more

My wife booked a room here on a rainy Sunday night and we had a great time. The room we chose was called "The Lost Temple". Per the website, this room is rated 6/10 for difficulty, and this being our first ever escape room, it felt like just the right amount of challenge. The room itself was decorated in theme and really helped to capture the imagination of being on an Indiana Jones style quest. Hints are given via a monitor on the wall, if requested, and we were very thankful because we got stuck a few times. Overall, we were given one hour to complete the room, and we took just about every last second to escape. During our time at Escape Quest we interacted with three different employees, all of whom were professional and friendly. It's located on King Street with many restaurants on the same block. We will definitely be back in the future to try a different room. read more

We came here last night after a shocking disappointment of an escape room in Woodbridge. While it was better than the one we did earlier in the game I still have mixed feelings about it. Room: Black Widow. We needed help off the bat, and honestly if we didn't ask we wouldn't have gotten it at all. Puzzles were hard but after getting clues for the ones we needed we had 'oooooh, yeahhh' moments. Here are my gripes -The puzzle master person we started with must of left sometime during the middle-ish of when we were in the room, we figured that when we were waving and asking for a clue and no response came for a while -we found what they called a 'loophole' with one of the clues so after that happened we went out of order and it kinda ruined the whole room -because of that loophole the other game master person came into the room and stopped the clock that we won even though we didn't and then we just left... so I feel slightly jipped because we didn't get to do like 20% of the ending -we talked to other friends that had done the same room and they actually ran into the same loophole with black widow. One would think if multiple teams have done this they would make some amend to the game so people can play it in order In the end we left with like 22 min on the clock and I don't think we will go back to this location because of that. The game master admitted and said sorry but I would of appreciated the opportunity to do another room or something since we didn't get to finish the current room and for the price of $40 pp its quite a let down. read more

I experienced 3 rooms here, and compared to other escape rooms I have done, none of them measured up. Based off of online reviews and the prices they are charging, I really thought these rooms would have been more elaborate. Lost Temple, is the funnest room, but it is Extremely EASY. It took 30 minutes to complete. Might be good for young kids for a birthday party. Kings Ransom was OK, nothing really special, a few fun puzzles, but I would not recommend. The Black Widow, is the best room, but still a 5 out of 10 compared to other escape rooms I've done. Definitely not good for young kids, lots of padlocks (like the ones you put on a gym locker). Nothing really special or unique. Hard to recommend. Most upsetting is that I was overcharged and they will not return my calls or emails to correct this. I was told there was ample parking available... there is zero designated parking for this place, I ended up driving around on 1 was streets looking for street parking, which took 30 minutes. Once I found parking, I had to walk 4 blocks and upon checking in was told they would need to subtract time from my room since I was late. read more

Came in here with the family not expecting the fun, puzzle solving, adventure would lead to a priceless bonding experience. We did the Lost Temple quest which was the most child friendly and there were 4 of us and 3 generations. The puzzles were just challenging enough, in depth, and played out a believable storyline. The hour went by fast!! We found the tips to be just challenging enough. The customer service was exemplary. We had Mike as our person and he was phenomenal. Super patient and funny!! I was surprised to see another Escape adventure opening in Old Town, right on the same street as Escape Room DC. BUT, thanks to Groupon, I discovered Escape Quest. They offered an amazing deal for 6 people, so be sure to look for coupons. Their reservation system is very easy. You can check online for rooms with the number of people in your party. The system will also allow for payment via your Groupon. This locked the deal for us. I had a friend coming in from NYC city and he heard great things about Escape rooms. He had never been. I gathered 2 more friends making it 5 available people. The room we booked accommodated 8 people. While lunching in Old Town, we met a guy in a bar, who happened to be free, and he joined our Groupon group. This location is on the second floor of a building with ample signage directing you to the proper place. Once we entered, I almost fainted...the A/C was NOT working. The reason for not giving them 5 stars is because I seriously felt like I was going to die in a room that preventing me from escaping! Check-in was easy, and they offered complimentary bottled water. The host was awesome, everything was explained perfectly. We walked over to our 'Bunker', which is what we selected. They paired us with a mother-dauther duet. They were awesome and instrumental in many of the discovered clues. This room was WAY harder than the other Escape room. I felt like there was a mystery and story to this format. The clues were hard, but solvable. There is a screen where you can see your time, you can see their clues, and you somehow communicate with them. The props were great! T hankfully, our time was up! I've only done one room in here but we had fun. I bought the LivingSocial deal for 4 people and it ended up being just the 4 of us in the Lost Temple Room. Unfortunately, the LivingSocial voucher limits you to 2 rooms (Lost Temple & Bunker) - which is a big reason for only giving 3 stars. The venue is located upstairs so look out for the street sign pointing you in the right direction. Once you get up there, you are greeted, sign your waiver, and sit in a cool little waiting area where you're offered water. Once we got in the room, the puzzles were not difficult to solve. The real challenge was in recognizing them in the first place. Otherwise, my only qualm was quality of the locks. They were pretty frustrating, even when you had the right code. All in all, we had a good time to I'd go back to check out the other rooms. read more

We did The Lost Temple and greatly enjoyed it. There were 2 of us and another 2 people were supposed to come, but never showed so we had the room to ourselves (which is awesome). Escaping in time with 2 people is possible, but unfortunately we didn't escape on time. We got stuck twice which took most of our time. The theming is wonderful all around. Just walking into the building and seeing the details of the lobby impressed me. I've been to about 2 other escape rooms and their lobbies were never themed. The main employee that helped us was very nice (I think his name was Craig) and another employee came in to tell us time was up and explained the solution to us. Overall, it was the best escape room I've been -Went back and completed The King's Ransom. We completed the room with lots of time to spare. It was good, but not great. The Lost Temple was more elaborate and had a lot more clues. read more

My boyfriend and I have tried almost every room that they have here and we love it every single time! The first time we went was during the summer and their AC wasn't working so it was extra hot in there. Luckily they gave each person a small bottle of water to help with the heat. The other times we've went, we've had good experiences. The staff is always super nice and they have fun with us too which makes it better. I love the props and signs they have that you can use for pictures at the end. I'm looking forward to when they change up the rooms so that we can go try our brain power with the new challenges! read more

My family had been to Escape Room Live, which is pretty close to Escape Quest, so we decided to try it. We chose a harder room, The Bunker. We enjoyed it, especially since several of us were in the military. However. The challenge was about 95% about deducing lock combinations. It was fun, but not as fun as the Sherlock Holmes room at Escape Room Live, which had more varied puzzles. The waiting area could do with a little more seating and some reading materials or other distractions to be used while waiting. Escape Room Live has waiting areas that match the room you choose, so you kind of get in the mood for your room before you even go in. In sum, I did enjoy our experience, and don't regret going. But I think it could be done better. read more

Escape Quest you guys are AWESOME. So far in DC, I've been to Breakout DC, Escape Quest, Escape Room Live (Glover Park&Alexandria), and Insomnia Escape Room DC. This is definitely an escape room spot you want to go check out. With the deals they offer, the technology behind these rooms and interesting puzzles, it makes for a great experience. The decor is awesome in the King's , rooms now offer fans to keep guests cool, and I can see why some reviews weren't kind in the A/C department but they do address it with the fans. Regardless I recommend doing rooms with 2 people, it's more fun, you get to actually solve all the puzzles together. Rooms we have tried here so far: The Bunker - one of their older rooms, difficult, but escaped. The Kings Ransom - loved the decor, puzzles used technology i have not seen before. Won't ruin it. My favorite room here!!! The Black Widow - My girlfriends favorite room, look at everything closely! The room does give you the creeps, if you are into that kinda thing. ESCAPETHEROOMers went to Escape Quest VA location back in Sept 2018. This escape room location is located on the second floor and there's no elevators. The lobby area is quite large and comfortable. The decor definitely adds to the ambience and there's a few puzzles for you to play with while waiting. The room design has a bit of a eerie feeling to it as if you are in a black widow's apartment, but I would definitely not label it as scary. We felt that the decor played well with the storyline, but the design of the room didn't feel as immersive. We were glad all the props were in great condition and functioned well. The puzzles were a good mix of high-tech and basic locks which played nicely. We actually finished up the puzzle rather quickly but got stuck at the end because of a brand new tech we have never encountered before. Also, we didn't understand one of the meaning behind the hint we got so we almost didn't make it out in time but figured it out with a minute left. There were some minor red herrings, but nothing major. Overall, we enjoyed our experience so much that we booked a second room back-to-back right there on the spot. This second room that we tried was definitely more immersive than the first. Right when you enter, you're going to feel like an archaeologist visiting an ancient dig. The props were pretty authentic and once again there was a good balance of high-tech and normal key lock puzzles. We had some difficulty using one of the tech products later on and that took almost 20 minutes of our time. We didn't feel that the game master's hint were clear at all. Unless the tech part was malfunctioning, we thought we did exactly what was hinted to us. Finally at the end, it worked and we were then faced with another obstacle. This was also another tech puzzle that we've never encountered, but was able to solve it right before our time was up. This was my second time going to an escape room and my first experience going to Escape Quest. I really enjoyed this experience better than the previous escape room that I went to. I purchased a Groupon and went here with a friend. Reserving our spot was really easy and seamless online and the Groupon provided clear instructions. When we arrived, check in was easy. We ended up reserving the Black Widow room. While we waited in the waiting area, there were some games on the tables, such as a wooden block tic tac toe game which my friend and I played a few games of. I thought the lobby/waiting room area was beautifully decorated. The Black Widow game was fun. My friend and I ended up in a room with two other people. We came really close to escaping but didn't quite make it. I would definitely return to Escape Quest to try a different room. It's conveniently located on King Street in Old Town so you could definitely make a day out of it and have lunch/dinner in the area and do some shopping while there. read more

I had my first escape room experience at Escape Quest and it was so much fun. I could not shut up about all of the clues and how fun it was afterwards so I definitely recommend it. Check-in process was smooth. She explained to us how we should not venture into the roof access area (thought it was odd that this was not cordoned off better), how to get hints, and how some of the fancy locks worked. After that, we were on our own except for a walkie-talkie that allowed us to beg for hints if needed. I definitely suggest putting your own group together. This really worked for us since we all knew each other and did not have any random wild cards to deal with. My cousins mentioned that they've had randos join their group and have had good and bad experiences with that. We were told that The Bunker was their most difficult room....and we escaped! The regular price seems a bit high especially when there are so many opportunities for Groupons but I'm so obsessed with booking another escape room experience that I miiiight pay full price. At first, I thought the lack of proper A/C was a tool to put the pressure on us to escape but after reading other reviews, looks like Escape Quest needs to crank up the air! My first experience at Escape Quest was a positive one, although I will say it was a bit underwhelming. The aesthetic of the waiting room was cool. They had a few tables with games on them and the interior decorations and music matched the "escape" theme perfectly. My friends and I did the Black Widow room, it was rated a 7/10 difficulty, which is accurate. The underwhelming part was the presentation. I guess I was expecting something more amusement-park-like. The room was light, and I was expecting it to be dark and mystical, nonetheless it was fun. The service was good, I have no complaints about the employees or our room director. This is my only critique: The screen in the room that introduced the challenge was very small, I would suggest a larger screen to create a more engaging atmosphere. My boyfriend and I booked "The Black Widow" at Escape Quest for just the two of us. I would say the biggest pro of Escape Quest is how they allow you to book the whole room for your party and don't have to pay for all the other spots. Few other escape rooms in the area do this. The receptionist when we arrived was friendly and helpful. We had a pretty good time and managed to escape just in time. However, I wasn't that thrilled with the puzzles, hence the 3 stars. Almost every single puzzle was just figuring out codes for the numerous padlocks all around the room. Other escape rooms that I've been to had much more varied and interesting puzzles. It just felt a bit repetitive and low-budget. Summary: aside from the major plus that we could book the room just for us, I'd go somewhere else for more exciting puzzles in the future. read more

this is like one of those sleeper movies. really fun but you don't realize it until you're there already. my husband was dreading this date. he had this horrible vision about this place. lucky for us he was wrong. in fact i think he enjoyed it much more than i did. i had been wanting to try the escape room thing for some time but none of my friends were willing to go. good thing I'm married so it became a date night. Hahaha. make sure you get here early so you can sign the waiver and use the bathroom. you only get an hour. the challenges were harder than i thought. just finding the first clue was ridiculous. (i think the host felt bad for us so he gave the first clue.) but after doing this first room i understand the concept now. basically numbers are important. we did the lost temple room which entailed alot of locks and combinations. to unlock the locks involved some math calculations, some cryptography, and other methods of decoding. in the end we didn't finish (we only finished the first part), but we still had a really fun time! it was a really interesting and engaging date night. highly recommended by both of us! read more

I went to this escape room in Old Town Alexandria for a corporate team building event and was impressed that this nondescript building nestled amongst the boutiques and restaurants would end up housing the most difficult escape room I have completed to date. Without revealing the details of the room or its puzzles, I will say that of all of the escape rooms I've participated in, this was the most difficult and the most mechanical; rather than being based mostly around riddles and logic puzzles, this place doesn't shy away from physical puzzles and interacting with aspects of the room. This was a welcome change and added an unexpected element of difficulty for myself and my coworkers who either hadn't done an escape room or were more accustomed to rooms based on logic puzzles. We completed our room with 7 people. I think 5-7 people is the ideal size for the difficulty and the price. If you're looking for a new place to test your wits with your friends or your coworkers, this is a great place to do so. I'm already looking forward to doing another room here! read more

We had so much fun! My son was not very enthusiastic at first. He had never heard of an escape room and would rather be at home playing video games but by the time we started he started he became more interested and by the time we finished he was ready to make another appointment to come again. I love puzzles and making myself use my brain, so escape rooms are a fun thing to me. My husband and I had a double date with some friends. We were joined by 4 other people we didn't know, but they were really cool and agreeable. My husband and I were rushing to get to the venue because we had a prior engagement then had to drop the kids off with my sis in law. I called to let them know that we would get there right at 8:30 when the game was supposed to start. The lady at the desk was very nice and advised they could wait up to 5 minutes. We got there at 8:28. I ran in while my husband parked. Thank God he found parking right around the block. Everyone was accommodating and the 4 strangers we played with were very cool. King's Ransom was a moderately difficult game. We used all 3 of our clues, but they were more like confirmation because we had already figured it out just wasn't sure how to make it make sense. We love escape quest. We went there with the friends and the theme was somewhat familiar to us but it was very challenging. We got out with 7 sec to spare and were very happy afterwards. When we came in, their waiting room was a bit too hot, but the lady offered us some cold water which was perfect. This was our first time at Escape Quest Alexandria. Our group of 3 booked Captain's Quarters on Sunday night at 7:45 pm and we got the room to ourselves. The entire room consisted of about 6-8 boxes which had a respective 6-8 padlocks. There were no other puzzles and no secret rooms. The entire time was spent figuring out numbers and letters for the padlocks (not very creative, exciting, or challenging). We escaped the room in under 30 minutes. Very anti-climatic. The tickets here cost $34/pp, which is relatively high for escape rooms. Other escape rooms in the area at this price point have multiple TV/computer screens, moving Animatronics, beautiful props, secret passageways, remote controlled devices, etc. This room was mostly empty with a bunch of padlocked boxes. If the other rooms at Escape Quest in Alexandria are anything like this room, I would not recommend -- there are better rooms in the area (Herndon, DC). In the end, we left feeling disappointed. Why did we pay so much for so little? :( Tl;dr - the entire Captain's Quarters room was 6-8 padlocks from beginning to end -- no other secrets or puzzles. Low budget and boring. Hoping to save you some time, here's a quick comparison between two nearly-collocated escape rooms... "Escape Quest" and "Escape Room Live" are located within a few blocks of each other and advertise similar experiences. However, from my experience (one room in each facility) they are very different. "The Bunker" at Escape Quest is mostly a death march of spotting numbers hidden with various levels of obscurity and finding which of the nearly dozen combination locks they will open. We solved the room about 30 minutes into that allotted hour but expressed a collective "Is that all?" before we unlocked the door and left. "Sherlock Holmes: A Matter of Time" at Escape Room Live offers an array of puzzles requiring all manner of approaches and solutions. My group didn't solve the puzzle in that allotted 45 minutes but had a lot of fun solving what we did and learning the details of what we didn't afterwards. Extra value was provided by staff who were in costume and character. I was a party guest in both cases so I'm not sure how much holding an event would cost at either location. However, given nearly equal costs, from my admittedly limited experience, I would recommend Escape Room Live. read more

I won't say too much about the workings of the room because I do not want to spoil it, I'll just say that the room was very well done, very challenging. Don't let the fact that some of the other rooms at this location are rated a higher difficulty level lead you to believe lost temple is the "easy" room, it is pretty tricky and even with the experience of many escape rooms behind us, we would not have escaped without help from the games master. read more
