Love this sweet place in the heart of downtown Escondido. The decor is very urban. The owners are very friendly. The food is always wonderful and good size portions. The gelato is amazing. I LOVE ice cream, but even more than ice cream I LOVE GELATO! When I heard this place was opening I made a point to go on opening day! Wow! I was not disappointed! It is located in downtown Escondido, right off the main drag. It was pretty busy when we walked in, but that was to be expected since it was opening day. The line was long, but it moved quickly! The flavors! Oh the flavors! Ones that I had never heard of or could have imagined! And classics too, like Mayan Chocolate, and Vanilla Bean. I had the Salted Caramel and the Almond Fig. Both were Ah-may-ZING! I order a small cup which was more than enough gelato for me considering how rich and creamy it was. Hands down the best place to get a frozen treat in North County. Hell maybe in all of San Diego. I love the different flavors they offer and the fact that they are always bringing out new flavors. The staff there is super nice and will let you try every flavor until you make up your mind if that's what you want. I love the fact that the Gelato is made there fresh daily and doesn't have any chemicals or preservatives in it. Plus it just taste better than the alternatives. (froyo, ice cream, slushie) Even my kids, who love Munchies (because they get to put a bunch of ridiculous stuff in their yogurt) like this place better and actually prefer it now. Before EscoGelato, I was convinced I did not like Gelato. I guess I was having really bad luck with Gelato because I've tried all sorts of flavors at EscoGelato and I love every single one of them. I especially love their cheesecake, pumpkin, and chocolate flavors. I am addicted to their chocolate brownie flavor...mmmm so yummy. I haven't tried any of their drinks yet but I have tried one of their Paninis. The Deedo is the best Panini I have ever had. Everything about it is great, the boar's head chicken, the provolone cheese, roasted peppers, avocado, mayo, pesto, and such delicious rosemary bread. I wish I could try one of their other paninis but I am too addicted to the Deedo. I highly recommend this place! One of my favorite places! read more

BEST gelato joint in SD hands down. They have different flavors almost everyday. If you have an idea for a gelato flavor, you can suggest it on their wall which is right next to the self serve water. My favorite was either hazelnut or caramel latte. The consistency was just right. Don't be afraid to ask for a sample! The staff is friendly and amazing as always. I want to bathe in this gelato. Seriously, this stuff is no joke. I consider myself somewhat of a gelato snob, and this is the real deal. Very fresh flavors, super creamy, excellent texture, and nothing artificial about it. I tried pistachio which was amazing, pluot, which was a cross between an apricot and a plum and is made from a fruit grown right here in Escondido which I loved, maple pecan, peach apple, strawberry basil, and spicy mango. Every one of these flavors were outstanding. The spicy mango in particular was unique -- and not for everyone -- at first bite, you get ripe, perfect mango flavor -- then after it settles in, you feel a bit of heat. While I won't say that I have been to tons and tons of gelato spots, this is my favorite one of them all. And that includes stops to gelato shops in New York, Boston and San Diego. They have a friendly staff and are very welcoming. They even have this little corner for kids to sit at tucked away in the front of the shop. Too small for me, but very cool for the kids. They have the most creative and fun flavors, and every single flavor that I have sampled is very good. Try them for yourself, and you will see that every flavor is awesome. My personal favorites are the peanut butter fudge and strawberry cheesecake. It feels like I am having a cold, decadent version of each of these flavors. It starts at $3.50 for a small cup, and the prices go up from there. The small is plenty though, and you can even get two flavors in there if you can't decide on just one. And trust me, it will be hard to narrow it down after you try a couple of samples. When I am in Escondido or even San Marcos, EscoGelato is my "go to" spot when I want a cold treat. read more

Esco Gelato is a hidden gem in Escondido tucked away in a corner on Kalmia near Grand. I love that there's plenty of parking in this area and that they serve a variety of different flavors using organic and local ingredients. The lime cream pie, Mayan chocolate and the pistachio are my favorite flavors but they host a great selection of choices ranging from the classics like vanilla, all the way to apricot with goat cheese. Although this little shop is the best in town, it doesn't have alot of competition considering there isn't many ice cream shops around the area other than chain eateries like Coldstone Creamery, Yogurtland and Baskin Robbins. The appeal of Esco Gelato is that its original and unique, and is considered to be the best frozen dessert location in the North County area. This mom and pop shop is fantastic in the fact that it provides great quality gelato at a reasonable price and has a nice casual atmosphere. Also, I love that it's locally owned and is special to the Escondido area, hence the name "Esco Gelato." I hope that Esco Gelato inspires the growth of innovative new businesses to bring diversity to the restaurant market in the North County area. read more

The hazelnut chip gelato is so good. I love the chocolate chunks in there and fell in love with it with the first taste. I tried the BlackBerry shorbert but it was a little tarty for me, and the French vanilla wasn't what I was looking for. Not only the best gelato around, they also have amazing baked goods and coffee. I've had the iced chai numerous times and it's sooooo good...today I had it hot and it's even better! The oatmeal cookies are so yummy and the scones are delicious as well! As for the gelato, I've tried so many of them and they are all great! The gelato is amazing and the sandwiches are pretty damn good too. My mom usually goes in for a salted caramel affogato (a shot of fresh pulled espresso poured over salted caramel gelato). It's her jam, she's all about it. Personally I'm a fan of the Mayan chocolate it'll rock your world. The only drawback here is that sometimes other customers decided they need to sample every single flavor in the case before they order and the line gets held up. Don't be that guy. read more

First off, the gelato was excellent! I ordered the passionfruit sorbet and it was amazing. Their service and the surroundings however were below subpar. As I was getting up from a round table, I stepped on the base which was wobbly. The table jerked and my iced coffee flew off the table and spilled; it was 3/4 filled, so it was not a small mess by any means. No one helped or cleaned up. I had to do it. Other customers gasped, yet the employees did nothing. They all saw me take multiple trips to get napkins. I had to mop it up myself. It was nice and sticky for the next patrons. So if you like precarious furniture and for employees to watch you mop up your mess, this is your place. I say in and out with this place. read more

Took the motorcycle out for a ride with a friend of mine and we decided to head inland...so came online and looked up coffeehouses in Escondido. EscoGelato received some nice reviews, so set the GPS destination and headed there. They have everything from coffee and homemade gelato to panini's and desserts. Located in the heart of Escondido on a nice quiet side street, it's a great place to sit outside and relax or sit inside and chat with the owners as well as other customers. Overall, a very nice place serving delicious food and drinks. I ended had the Deedo Panini (sliced chicken, provolone, roasted red peppers, avocado, mayo and pesto) and a cup of coffee....ummm, ummm, good!!! I really love this place! The location is tucked back off the main downtown road, quaint interior with games to play while you wait/enjoy what you've ordered and very friendly staff. The selection is limited for menu, but lots of gelato flavors. I've tried almost everything and it is all very good - complex flavors on the paninis and nice, fresh salads. The gelato flavors are amazing...I love their almond fig and their chocolate hazelnut. My fiance loves the sweeter flavors, his favorite is carrot cake. They are always changing their flavors through and sell out quickly, so they might not have what you are craving...only downside (I've been dying for almond fig and the last three times we went in they had sold out! I think it's a conspiracy to keep me coming back!) But can always try the flavors and can split your cup or cone with two different kinds if you can't decide. We love splitting a deedo panini, iced mocha and each getting our own gelato - who wants to share that?! I also love that they use biodegradable cups. The service was a little slow. They are sure to get better as they are open longer and the delays were all normal growing pains for a new restaurant. Plan to spend the extra time (15-20 min to get the sandwich) it's worth it! I had the Deedo sandwich (chicken and veggies), which was nice ingredient combination with wonderful bread. I heard about this place from a friend, so I decided to check it out. I've been here twice so far, and have had a pleasant experience both times. My husband and I decided to stop by on a hot day, and boy was it busy! The place was packed on the Saturday we went. I ordered the Afogato, which is your choice of gelato with a double-shot of espresso down the middle. I chose the horchata flavor. It was pretty darn good! My husband also got the horchata flavor, but on a cone. The place is very inviting, but it is kind of a small place - less than 20 or so seats inside and some chairs outside. It was so busy that we had to take it to-go, which was not a problem since it was a beautiful day for a walk around downtown Esco. We stopped by again yesterday, craving dessert after lunch. I ordered the espresso flavor, and my husband had the blueberry cheesecake. Both were excellent. Plenty of seating was available this time around, so we decided to sit down and enjoy. I will definitely be coming back to this place. The prices are not bad at all for gelato. It is a hidden gem in Esco and I can't wait to try their other flavors! read more
