It's rare to find good Mexican food outside of Texas but this place did not disappoint. Fajitas carne asada were delicious.

my friends and I really loved this place! We got a pitcher of strawberry margaritas, and a pitcher of peach and they were both very good. I got the chicken taquitos and it was the favorite of the table. We also had an order of chipotle enchilada, carne asda burrito, chipotle burrito and everyone really enjoyed their meals. The chipotle sauce has a bit of a kick to it but it's very good. We ended the meal with Sopapillas. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly, we enjoyed our time very much. We couldn't find a menu for this place but decided to take a chance on it because of the reviews and perhaps the name influenced us a bit too. We had a great meal that came out in a proportion large enough that we didn't think we would be able to finish it, that is until our plates were clean. Yup 5 stars! We came here on a weeknight and were not disappointed. The restaurant has character with old wood features and even though it's a basement it doesn't seem like it. The original margarita was solid and made with real lime juice. They give you free chips, salsa and slaw to start. For meals we had the fajitas and super burrito. Both came out hot and large portions. This is a solid Telluride choice for a no mischief meal for 2 under $40. Be back next time! :) read more

Don't let the atmosphere scare you off! My husband and I were in Telluride on the same day as the Imogene Pass Run, so the town was insane and we couldn't find anywhere to eat that didn't have a 60 minutes wait. We walked into Esperanza's and were initially really concerned, as the restaurant was underground and there wasn't a soul in the place. But we are so glad we stayed! First off, you get 2 different and very delicious salsas to start. We also each ordered a margarita, and those didn't disappoint either. Each of our main meals were delicious (my guacamole even had real chucks of avocado in it!). The meat wasn't over cooked and was seasoned well. If I could give this a 4.5, I would. Pretty solid mexican food, especially for what we found in Telluride. It also seems to be a place where the locals hang out, so you can bet on consistency. If I could, I'd give them 3.5 stars, but I don't think they quite get there for the fourth star. It was a little hard to find at first. They have a shingle hanging out on the street, but you have to go downstairs to get into the restaurant. The staff was very nice and our order came out quickly. The food was hot and the beer was cold, so there is not much to complain about. Before dinner, they brought out two kinds of salsa with the chips, a traditional tomato-based "pace picante" style salsa and another that looked homemade with chopped up onions, cilantro, peppers, etc. Both were pretty fantastic. For our main course, my wife had the camarones diablas and I had the enchilada poblano. The food was very good, though not exceptional, and the portions are enormous. The staff never rushed us, even though we ended up being the last people in the place except for the two guys who were clearly regulars that were alternating between drinking at the bar, joking with the waitress, and helping clean up and stack chairs. read more

This place is a quaint, humble, and truly authentic Mexican restaurant. In fact, when making reservations, the person answered in spanish! We walked right in and were seated immediately. On the table were complimentary tortilla chips, salsa, and fresh cabbage salsa. The chips were still warm because they were freshly made, and the cabbage salsa salad thing was incredibly light and flavorful. Our waitress was an energetic and awesome young lady who helped us navigate around the menu. She kept checking up on us, filling our glasses, and made sure that everything was satisfactory. The food came in good sized portions, and was truly authentic. I have been to Mexico before several times and I could definitely relate to this food to the food I have there. The enchiladas were particularly fantastic, and the chipotle sauce they make is killer! Dessert was simple and enjoyable as well. Overall this restaurant did not live up to the hype. Service was sub par, as well as the food, not to mention that just about everything on the menu is $20 or more. I ordered fish tacos and the third taco had two pieces of tiny fish. We also ordered margaritas and we waited about an hour before we got food or drinks. I would not recommend this place to anyone. My husband and I decided to give this restaurant a try after reading the reviews on Yelp and after a long day of jeeping with San Juan jeep tours. Its been many years since Telluride had a really good Mexican restaurant but if the meal I had last night is any indication this place fills that gap. My Mexican food yardstick is a chili relleno. If they can do that right everything is usually decent. They do a good one here - actually two since they make one regular and one crispy. Their regular is a good size poblano chili, firm texture not overcooked and not so heavily battered as to be unrecognizable. Tasty. Margaritas come in a pint glass and are plentiful and delicious. In addition to the standard salsa with your chips they serve a spicy Mexican slaw that's pretty tasty too. So if you're in town and hungry for some good Mexican food after a long day on the slopes, you won't be disappointed here. read more

We had a ski club party at Esperanza's yesterday. The food and service was amazing. Everything was great , especially the Margaritas and quest dip, which were excellent.. My family and I were walking down the street looking for something to eat when my daughter spotted this restaurant my husband checked the inside out and we decided to eat there. We were sat down immediately and had drinks and menus before we could blink twice, our server, Erica, was AWESOME! She was on it! We got our food very fast and the chips and salsa were amazing! Subpar Mexican food and even worse service. I'd like to say the waiter's pissy attitude and complete lack of professionalism was due to being overwhelmed at service, but there were two seated tables and nothing else going on. While we waited for the wrong order to be brought to us and subsequently returned to the kitchen, four groups of people came into the Mexican dungeon where tamales go to die, and left because this waiter ignored them for almost 5 minutes. Just because you're one of the few restaurants in town doesn't mean you can provide terrible food and service and still get 4/5 on Yelp and Google. Anyone that says this is their favorite restaurant is either associated with the restaurant or had a lobotomy. read more

Very very friendly staff. Service was pretty good also. The food was...meh. The what appeared to be homemade coled slaw served with the chips & salsa was a nice touch. A no-mayo, vinegar based slaw was pretty good. The steak fajitas...not good. I suspect it was sitting under the heat lamp for awhile because the sizzling tray did not sizzle when it arrived; and the beef was so dry and hard (jerky style). Overload on butter / oil all over the onions and peppers too. the beef taco for kids was fair not great. Lot of moisture - not sure from the beef, lettuce or tomatoes. But the shell got soggy very very quickly. Bottom line, the only Mexican game in town. What the hell are you going to do? Oh well. read more

Good Service, good food. They had Picadillo that was well spiced and had large chunks of tender beef. You rarely find it on most Mexican restaurants so it was a treat to find it and it is a great version of it. I would recommend the Picadillo in any of their meat filled items. read more

Positives: extremely fresh margaritas, good salsa and the spicy cabbage is so different in a great way!! The portions are pretty big (at least for the taco meals) my negatives would be the queso... tastes like it could be from a can, our place setting was not very clean either, and pricey for extremely mediocre mexican. Very bad service. Food was average. Salsa was fresh but it is made like some sort of tomato broth with vegetables. Good flavor though. Dishes were average and meat was dried out. We have been in Telluride for 3 weeks. We now regret we did not try this place on week one. Incredible margaritas (and I'm a snob) , fantastic chips and hot sauce with a really unique Mexican slaw. The temperatures were low, but my margarita craving was high. I went with a group of 7 guys and all of us enjoyed the margaritas. Talked to the owner, Esperanza, who freshly squeezed limes for each drink. The complimentary chips and salsa were fantastic and included both a standard red salsa and a chunky 'pico de gallo', that rocked my world.
