I don't understand the reviews here. This food was below average. I'm comparing this to any decent Mexican restaurant. The service was about the worst we had all trip. Our waiter forgot things left and right and kept coming back to confirm our orders. He may have been overwhelmed because he was covering a lot of tables. We came here because we'd never eaten at Esperanza's before and I had a hankering for Mexican/texmex. The service was fantastic- I'm pretty sure they were trying to close as we sat down but they were still attentive and friendly. Very disappointing. Beef fajitas were cut with the grain and impossible to eat. Tough and chewy. Queso is cheez whiz out of a can. Chips are hard. Salsa had too much basil and oregano so much it tasted like an Italian marinara. Wow! From the mushroom appetizer, the straight tequila margaritas, to the best green sauce enchiladas, this place is well worth venturing downstairs from the beautiful Telluride outdoors. One of these days I am going to learn that you never voluntarily eat Mexican food in Colorado. This place is clean, smells great, acceptable atmosphere, and has good margaritas. Problem is, the food is terrible. It is soggy, bland, and has weird spices to it. This was true for everyone in my group, spread across a variety of dishes. The best thing they serve is a slaw like dish with your chips. When you taste this stuff, you assume everything else is going to be comparably great. Nope. We were really disappointed in this place and the food. First, it was sweltering ...and it's on a lower level. Second, it was not very busy but we couldn't get the server to keep,our water glasses full. So, the food was...hmmm...ok...not adequately authentic to my taste. I had the taco salad with pork...it was topped with quite spicy salsa verde so basically no other flavor was present. This Mexican restaurant is hidden in a basement along the main street in town. It's conveniently located near other shops and walkable from most areas of town. The food was okay and the portions were large. However, food and drink prices were steeper than the local slopes. Being in Telluride, you expect to pay a premium but this still felt like a ripoff. The food was more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican and flavor was mediocre. It's likely the best in the area but there's definitely room for improvement. Service also left a lot to be desired. The bartender/server was friendly but spent more time hanging on her boyfriend at the bar than serving the handful of customers. We were only feet from the guy she was nuzzling up to but it somehow still went unnoticed when our chips or drinks were empty. When finished, we asked for directions to various places nearby. Being locals, we expected her and her boyfriend to provide decent information. Not even close. Whether it be spite towards tourists or that we were cutting into their cuddle time, the directions we got were maybe 20% accurate and took us out into the middle of fucking nowhere. We would have been better off asking directions from one of the 50 elk we nearly hit. Next time in Telluride, I'll skip this place in favor of the other places in town. read more
