    Paella de Arroz Negro

Our friends took us here saying it was authentic Spanish food and that we needed to try it. I was craving paella for a while so I was happy to go. Paellas did not disappoint! The squid ink paella was crispier around the edges more so than the seafood, so i think i prefer that one! Other than that, everything was good but the meat was a bit dry. Staff was wonderfully nice - I requested to be moved to a better seat and they did everything they could to accommodate us. Friendly crew. If you want authentic paellas in a no fuss or frills, bustling and hustling Spanish resto, this is the right place to go.

The best Paella in the Bay Area!!! I've been to Teleferic in Palo Alto and Los Gatos but Paella of Esperpento is the best in my opinion, taste wise and lots of fresh ingredients !!! Fast and friendly owner and servers . Ambiance is okay as well . Parking is just across or near the restaurant . Highly recommended!

Best Happy Hour deal in town, $20 a Sangria pitcher 5pm-7pm (yes, 7pm)...Paellas are delicious too.

Warning, street parking can be tough. We had an absolute blast, eating our hearts out. Tip: It is best to order, eat, rest, order again and eat again. :) There were some confusion with our orders, but it got resolved. Nevertheless, we had an absolute great experience with our servers. Place was clean; restrooms were clean. Tapas were yummy. The paella was just OK for me only because I was too full with the tapas. Anchovies is a must; green beans was yummy. Oxtail was great. Calamari was to die for.

My husband and I were revisiting our favorite date-night spots and we stopped by Latin American Club to have one of their mean margaritas. We've always noticed Esperpento multiple times across the street and always talked about trying it out and this time, we finally took the leap!! I do want to preface this by saying I've lived in Spain for half a year and have revisited different parts of the country 7x since so I may be a paella/spanish food snob. We ordered the tortilla de patata and the Paella de Carne and a bottle of wine to share. The tortilla de patata came out quickly but unfortunately, it was nothing to write home about. It was quite dry and flavorless. Finally, the paella de carne came out and it looked like it was filled with a variety of meats. I was excited to dig in but was disappointed with the lack of flavor, no socarrat, and not even a hint of saffron. MEHHHH. So dissapointing! This place is a "no" for me, fam!

Came here on a Tuesday night with 6 friends and had no wait. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and cute, and the staff is super nice. We all loved the bread and garlicky aioli and appreciated the refills! The food was also pretty okay but kind of pricey imo. The squid ink paella was delicious but I do wish there was more seafood. The seafood to rice ratio for each bite was a bit off. For 6 people we got the 4person paella and it was more than enough- definitely had some to go. The sangria pitcher was $19 and a great deal to split amongst the group.

2nd shot of the head on grilled shrimp . Peeled perfectly so much flavor.

How I love thee Esperpento! Feeling fancy but on a budget? Esperpento has a cure for that. Hungover and need soul cpr? Esperpento has a cure for that too. Oxtail stew for life! There's a reason why this gem has survived all of the mission neighborhood changes. It's epic, budget friendly, Spanish comfort food Not sure what to get? The staff will gladly help you have an amazing experience. Definitely recommend in person over delivery for the full food high .

I was in the neighborhood and decided to give it a try. Spanish food is always a good option but sadly, this place disappointed me. The service is attentive and friendly, inside fees cozy and welcoming. There were 2 guys that played the guitar. I appreciated it but I wish the establishment pay them instead of making them go around the tables asking for tips. The food: -Meatballs. Under seasoned. Bland. -Gambas al ajillo. Nothing special. I appreciate they removed the intestines. -Patatas bravas were good. -Artichokes. Bland. -Pan con tomate. It had a tomato paste instead of fresh ones. Meh. Why did they add onions? Dessert: Churros. Didn't say they were filled with raspberry jam, that's not traditional in Spanish cuisine. But it was good. Nice consistency and flavor! I recommend it. Points for having Inca Cola. I won't comeback.

Seafood Paella, added Spanish sausage. The prosciutto was amazing!
    Sonia S.

I'm a Paella connoisseur so I tried it out. It was ok, not delectable as it should be. Price is right but something flavorful was missing. Prosciutto tapa was bomba! Sangria was average, not delicious but does the job. I did my good deed but will def try elsewhere.

And I was tired of the typical American or Italian fare. Abrazo popped to the top so I booked the reservation for 7:30. When we arrived, we seated at a wonderful table in the corner of the restaurant. The main dining room is boutique sized, but they don't overstuff it with tables so you do not feel like your neighbor is breathing on your food or listening to every word you say. Ha. Ha. The service was impeccable. They treated us like guests. We chose to eat from the small plate portion of the menu, although the main course meals looked incredible as well. Every dish was delectable. From the brussels sprouts (which would not be one of my typical selections - but which was mouthwatering ), to the Salmon (which is much more closer to lox than American Salmon), to the meatballs, to the garden salad, every bite was flavorful, fresh and brought smiles to our faces. And don't forget to order their fresh bread. And did I mention the service? Home style, friendly, attentive.... Like great local restaurants used to be. I highly recommend Abrazo - both special occasions and for a "let's try something different" week night. My special friend and I had a memorable evening and we look forward to coming back soon. 5-stars

We had a reservation and was shortly seated after a few mins of waiting. The restaurant was small and cosy. We got the croquetas and house-cured salmon. Both were very delicious and finely curated. The croqueta tasted like what I had in Spain in fine restaurants. The aioli had some truffle taste to it and it's not overwhelming. Normally I stayed away from truffle tasted dishes but this was good. The salmon was very good - it's perfectly salted and the beet puree and dill-yogurt sauce go so well with it. The depths of flavors and texture were perfect. The highlight was the paella. I can confidently say it's authentic - socarrat at the bottom and I'm very happy that it's not salty! The taste of the paella suits my palate so well.. and the shrimp on the paella was incredibly - cooked so tender and fresh that salinity in the shirmp shines on its own. If I had to nitpick I would suggestet having extra salt on the side of the paella and aioli to go with it :) Service was average - staff seems to have different responsibilities and were pretty busy. The food was the best part of the experience. Bravo Abrazo!

Not sure how long it has been up, but hopefully they reopen soon because this place is great! Now, despite having bookmarked them a while back, I have to admit it took news of The Spanish Table's longtime Berkeley location closing a few months ago to finally motivate me to check them out. However, that's on me, as I had heard nothing but great things from friends who had been here before. As soon as you step inside, you're immediately met by a whole slew of products from Spain - racks of bottles of wine, kitchen staples like dry goods, rice, canned seafood, and spices, a table with samples of olive oil, fridges chock full of cured meats and cheeses, shelves of earthenware, cookbooks, and even paella pans in a whole range of sizes. As awesome as their retail/market selection may be, though, the food counter here is what really caught my eye. Whether it be one of their hot paninis or cold Bocadillos, everything sounded so good (they also have a mix of coffees and teas). Yet, after reading through all of their options, THE PIG & FIG panini sounded too good to pass up. Filled with Jamon Serrano, Campo de Montalban Cheese, Orange-Fig Jam, and Arugula, this was terrific! The jam and jamon made for a sweet and salty pair, the cheese was delicious, there was a fair amount of meat and arugula, and the bread was soft and lightly toasted. That being said, presumably because the ingredients are imported from Spain, the overall portion felt a little light for how much it costs (~$15) when compared to your usual sort of large deli sandwiches. Given how the challenges and obstacles that forced them to close their Berkeley location (and their Mill Valley outpost earlier this year) are likely present here as well, it wouldn't be surprising if this temporary closure becomes permanent. Unsurprising, but certainly no less unfortunate. Here's to hoping that doesn't end up being the case, though, because I'd love to come back again! FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded down.

We chose to sit outside since it was a nice day in the Castro, and the parklet was nice and clean. The Happy Hour deal comes with 2 drinks and 5 small bites from their abbreviated happy hour menu. I got the white sangria, which was light and refreshing, while my friend got the Rosa wine - though it came out looking like a white wine so not sure if we received the right thing. Regardless both were tasty. We opted to get 2 orders of croquetas and 2 orders of the bacon wrapped dates - each order comes with 2 of each, as well as a trio of churros which came with chocolate dipping sauce. While everything was good, nothing stood out or was super memorable, and we were definitely still pretty hungry afterward. We ordered one beet and chorizo flatbread, which was pretty disappointing since it was cold, and the flatbread felt like it could be storebought and put together at home - we actually didn't end up finishing it. The mushroom skewers were a bit more unique and we enjoyed the pickled minced veggie topping that it came with, and the mushrooms had a good texture. After adding on the flat bread and skewers to the $45 Happy Hour deal, our bill came out to about $120 for two, and we weren't too full - since the food didn't really standout I can't say that I'd recommend coming here.

We ordered the ceviche de pescado, artichoke, pulpo, croquetas, roasted cauliflower, yuca fries, Ojo de bife - ribeye steak, Bife con papas, and gaucho. The ceviche was everyone's favorite appetizer, with fried corn was unique and balanced out the acidity of the ceviche. The yuca fries and cauliflower were basic dishes that I wouldn't order again for the price. The artichoke was a bit of a disappointment as it was more difficult to eat than expected. The char on the artichoke was a bit too overpowering as well. The main dishes were great! All the beef was done to perfection and melted in your mouth. The fries that come with the bife con papas were extremely flavorful and had a good crisp that made it very addicting. For dessert, we ordered the churros, apples crostata, and chocolate cake. The churros themselves were average, but the side caramel and chocolate sauces were surprisingly not overly sweet. The chocolate cake was decadent and moist -- would recommend if you like a dense cake. The apples crostata had great flavor from the apples and the sweetness from the apples were nice with the ice cream on top. Personally, I would just get the chocolate cake again.
