The host was hilarious, friendly, and just the right amount of sassy. To get in, they asked if we had anything to pawn. We were caught completely off guard! So here's your heads-up: bring something small to 'pawn' if you want to fully enjoy the experience. We didn't have reservations, but since there were only two of us, they were able to squeeze us in for an hour, which was plenty of time to enjoy the food and drinks. I was pleasantly surprised to find orange wine on the menu. Coming from Oregon where it's everywhere, I didn't realize it was harder to find in the bay. How good can a meal possibly be? Can it be so good that you never want it to end? Oh my God, everything we ate was that good. We. Were. OBSESSED!!! As soon as we walked in, we were welcomed with applause, like everyone was already our friend. We sat at the big communal tables with other groups, and honestly, we loved that experience. I can't remember the name of the potato dish right now, but I included a photo of it--it was the second best potato dish I've ever had in my life. And that octopus... you just want to reach over and hug it because it's too perfect to eat. It was incredibly tender on the inside, with the lightest, crispiest exterior. And that amazing flavor... ahhh, it was so, so good. We also ordered a steak, but I realized I forgot to take a picture of it. It was delicious too. The only bad thing about this place? The portions eventually come to an end. Guys, you seriously need to invent never-ending portions. The churros were amazing too. Every single dish was unique. Curios about this place, I went for dinner with my husband a few weeks ago. Before going inside, you have a funny experience with the lady who allows you to enter. Update! It had been a little over a year since I had been here because I had surgery. Now there's a security guard in the front, and the line outside is way more organized. I recommend making a reservation because it books fast, and you can wait for a while as a walk-in. The food is reasonably more expensive than compared to 18 months ago, but the food is just as good. They don't have the dancing bartenders anymore, so it's a bit more of a relaxed but still super fun vibe. The fabulous guy, who I think is the owner and used to always be the greeter, wasn't there this time. There was a woman, who was just as hilarious and entertaining in showing us the way into the Pawn shop. I told her about my surgery and how I had looked forward to being back, and she gave us the best table in the house! I like to bring little trinkets of offering because they collect and display some of them. I brought a little figurine this time, and a building block set for the pawn master. She was so appreciative and enthusiastic. That's just the beginning! The food is sooooo good. If you like tapas, this is your place. It's so reasonably priced for the experience and location, and the sauce on the shrimp is sooooo savory and indulgent. The hanger steak is my favorite, and I personally think a hidden gem in the neighborhood. The fried potatoes are perfectly crisp but fluffy and steamy on the inside. I'd been hearing about this place for a while, so I was super excited to finally check it out. I managed to snag a dinner reservation for six just a few days beforehand, which was a nice surprise. When we arrived, the security guard gave us the rundown on how it all works: to get in, you have to bring something to trade. It can be anything small or random, like a pen or keychain. I brought a cute little blue fluffy vampire pendant plush (see photo) and traded it for a hilarious figurine of a woman with big breasts (see other photo). I loved my trade! Before 7pm, the staff told us that anyone who comes in after 7 gets a cheer from everyone and sure enough, it made the whole experience feel lively and communal. Watching people's reactions as we all cheered for them was hilarious. The food definitely lived up to the hype. We ordered nearly every tapa on the menu, and everything was delicious. My personal favorite was the Gambas al Ajillo. The shrimp was perfectly seasoned, and the bread was spot-on. You really can't go wrong with any of their tapas; each dish had great flavor and presentation. Another cool touch: there's a hidden door that connects to Monarch, which we used when leaving! Drinks Uno Rivera - the only drink from original menu. It was light, refreshing and sweet. Pablo picuatro - their take on a red sangria. It was sweet and delish. The location is not the greatest, so it's best to use transportation. we ended up walking a couple blocks from a nearby parking garage. The pawn trade-in trinkets concept was quite fun and different. You're guided into a speakeasy environment and it's a dimly lit space with music playing in the background. We ordered the Cheese Plate ($33), Pickled Vegetables ($8), Gambas Ajillo ($19), Ensalada de Bruselas ($17), Churros ($14) and Uno & Dos Cocktails ($16/drink). The main stars were the Cheese Plate and the Gambas Ajillo. The total for three came out to roughly $150 before tip. Was it the best food? In order to enter, you have to give an item to the pawn shop. We were a group of nine. We gave things like pens, scarves, postcards, and other goodies. Our hostess was a skilled improver. She had unique replies and stories to each of our items. When I gave her a pen and told her I wrote a love letter to my fiancé she gave me "something blue" as a gift for my upcoming wedding. She then entered a magic password to open the door to the restaurant. It was fun watching her tap a bunch of random objects. We were then led to our big table. We had a special menu filled with tapas for us to share. We were there as a work group and had an absolute blast. Each dish was so delicious. I remember really loving the octopus and steak dishes. We were seated at a high top rectangular table. They have gender neutral single stall restrooms here. My manager was super kind and told the restaurant that it was my birthday. Behind a pawn shop facade and some cluttered shelves filled dusty odds and ends lies a secret speakeasy and the only way in is to "pawn" a gag item to the gatekeeper. Gambas al Ajillo Poached shrimp swimming in garlicky chili oil, infused with smoky paprika and sizzling garlic. The garlicky chili oil was slurp worthy. The shrimp cooked to a perfect tender while retaining a meaty snap. The grilled bread served alongside was basically a garlic sponge that saved me the awkwardness of having to slurp from a dish. Pulpo a la Plancha Tender, charred octopus with crisped potatoes, Romanesco sauce, Tokyo turnips, and a whisper of Aleppo chile. This was one of the tastiest octopus I've ever had. Super tender with a wonderful smoky flavor. I would venture back just for this. We swung by at 4:30 for a quick pre-dinner bite before heading to another spot..Despite being packed on a Wednesday night, the service was excellent. We were greeted almost instantly , and food and drinks arrived timely without ever feeling rushed. Highly recommend making a reservation. We had one for 4:30 and noticed only two empty tables when we were seated. The only downside and why it didn't get 5 stars is the neighborhood. I don't want to spoil the surprise, so all I'll say is... don't be deceived by what you see when you first enter this pawn shop. We entered there and it can barely hold 10 people at once. All that being said... once you're able to get past that, you're in for a serious treat. But even that process is a thrill. The vibe of this place is quite something, and it's one of the most unique speakeasy concepts I have personally experienced to date! They have several cool tapas, and we explored quite a bit of the menu, including their shrimp, peppers, octopus, brussel sprouts... everything was delicious. I started out feeling ready for an adventure. I got to The Pawn Shop about 15 minutes early. I was standing outside of the "store" and a woman opened the door to tell me that they didn't open until 5. I told her that we had a reservation at 5 and that I understood. When the rest of my party arrived, they were closer to 5 but we still had to wait until exactly 5:00 to get in. When we finally got in, the fake, pawn shop front was pretty cute. We got the ceremonious tour and speal and were lead into the back where the bar is. They sat us upstairs in back and let us know that we had 1 hour before we would need to leave for a large party coming in. Limited menu for both drinks and apps. No entrees, couldn't even get a Cabernet. The "large party" coming in to kick us out never materialized. Overall feel was that they didn't want us as customers. Not impressed. Takes one to know one baby, and game respects game. I loved this and leaned into the camp of it all. I happily added 5 euro to the money tree and wished (as my whole team watched!) for a baller trip to Portugal. I guess now I HAVE to go to the Azores and see if the my money tree wishes come true, for spiritual SCIENCE. What a fun experience from start to finish! I love the concept of Pawn Shop. It's a speakeasy with the pawn shop serving as the "front". You have to pawn an object to get entry through the secret bookshelf entrance. The person at the front makes a big show of letting you in. The host's playfulness and theatrics were really the star of the show - she truly made it a delightful experience the moment we walked in. It's also so cool to see the collection of things people have pawned throughout the years - foreign money, little tchotchkes and trinkets - every corner is packed with objects. The food was pretty good too. It's typical Spanish-style tapas and everything was delicious! The drinks were fairly good too and they have a pretty large wine list. The server did her best to keep our large party well fed and our glasses full. She even brought out a celebratory porron of cider for someone who has celebrating a birthday at our table. The Pawn Shop is located in a nondescript spot and appears from the front to be a quirky shop filled with tchotchkes. In order to gain access to the chic tapas bar hidden behind the pawn shop storefront, you'll need to bring a little something to pawn. Really, anything you happen to have in your handbag will do. In my group, we someone pawned a cookie cutter, necklace, mini-Christmas stocking, and a Boise magnet. Once you've 'pawned' your objects, the shop keeper will let you through the bookshelf door to the beautiful restaurant behind. The Pawn Shop does not serve liquor--they have beer, wine, and wine cocktails. I ordered one of their wine cocktails, which was fine but not really my jam. I'd probably just opt for a glass of red next time. Our group opted for some small bites to begin. I eat as vegetarian as possible and was able to enjoy several dishes. When you walk in, you must pawn something or tell a joke :) I came for a celebration weekday dinner with a group of 7 friends and it was pretty easy to get a reservation ahead of time. When you make it past the entrance, the inside is a dimlight moody restaurant. They have Spanish tapas for the main menu -- we ordered 7 ish items, from patatas bravas, to skewers, to a charcuterie board. The food all tasted fine (the sauces were very flavorful) but we definitely left hungry as things were pretty pricey. I was so excited to dine at The Pawn Shop. The concept alone hooked me, but I tried to manage my expectations. Luckily, my dining experience here exceeded expectations! When I booked my reservation, I didn't initially realize we needed to bring something small to present to the pawnmaster upon arrival. Luckily, a coworker of mine that was familiar with the restaurant gave me a heads up the day before so we were able to come up with a few items the pawn. Upon arrival, I immediately began marveling at all the quirky items adorning the lobby. My eyes darting in every corner, we were immediately greeted with warmth and enthusiasm and began our pawn dance in order to gain access. The host alone deserves five stars for being so fun, staying in character and making out introductory moments at the restaurant so memorable and entertaining. Once we gained access to the restaurant, I was impressed by how quickly the aesthetic changed into a modern, upscale space. We first orders a few drinks and starters, before opting to each order off the tapas part of the menu treating each and individual entrees. I'm so glad we approached it that way because I would not have wanted to share the delicious pulpo I ordered. It was also the perfect portion for an individual serving, especially after sharing a few starters. Service was great and it seemed as though everyone in the group was satisfied with their orders. I could not wait to give this spot a try when I found out this was where we were going for dinner when visiting San Fran on a work trip. This was the perfect spot for our team. When you pull up, it's a literal pawn shop. From the outside, you see all the unique decor and when you walk in, you're surrounded by so many different items that have been pawned off in the past. Each member of our party had to pawn an item, so come with something in hand! From euros and stickers from different cities, to a retro boombox and VHS tapes, this place is so unique. The woman working was perfect for the job. She had a great personality, she added so much fun to the short time we spent in the shop before putting in a secret code to the door. When she opened the door, we walked into a beautiful, hipster vibe speakeasy. SO cool. My boss ordered everything ahead of time, so once we got there the food came out promptly. I ordered a glass of cab, of course. We started with the Ensalada de Bruselas which was Brussel sprouts, Page mandarin, pistachios, pear dressing ... and I am STILL thinking about this. It was incredible. The flavors were a perfect pear (ha). The Gambas al Ajillo (shrimp, garlic, sweet smoked paprika, sherry vinegar, Brandy, toasted bread, parsley) and Carne a la Plancha (seared hanger steak, broccoli di Ciccio, kohl rabi, preserved lemon, bagna cauda aioli) were my favorite entree style dishes. We went here for our annual christmas dinner with friends! We thought this is a unique experience for us! Coming in there were a lot of trinkets on the wall. Then the hostess will ask if you have anything that you want to trade... sort of a part of their game! And then they will knock on the door to let you in. The crowd will clap as you enter. They serve tapas so we had octopus, carne (steak), gambas, patatas bravas, brussel sprouts, coliflor and churros for dessert! Food is great but ok a pricey side. I had the lavender lemon drink called Estefan, i think? And it was good! The ambiance is great for cocktails and tapas as it is a speakeasy. First things first to get in you're supposed to leave a little trinket and switch it like swapping it out with something else I ended up leaving my Bee, beads chain from New Orleans. And. Know I didn't have to show any flesh for them, or did i hmmmmm? I feel like this is a great spot to meet up with friends have some cheese have some wine and some charcuterie light tapas. It was a very chill atmosphere. It's loud. I'm not gonna say it's not they have other rooms is a secret chambers.. hands down my favorite thing was octopus. It was tender. It was delicious. It wasn't tough. It had great sauces that they paid it with purée sauces. It was phenomenal. I would have the any time if you could get over the fact that there's a octopus tentacle on your plate and still eat it you will enjoy it.. my second favorite thing I have to say was a hanger Steve. It was decent. It was delicious. It was cooked perfectly. It could've had a little more season for me, but it was by far my second favorite dish. the poppas we're OK they were fried well. Nice sauce nice toppings. It was actually good but it's just potatoes. I mean it's filling. I also we also enjoyed the options that the cheeseboard there was something that you could pick up with friends and try different cheeses and wine pairings and just say hey I like this cheese more than I like that one the preserve that they offer with it oh that preserve is delicious. But like I said overall, this place was outstanding nice atmosphere nice aesthetics delicious food, especially when you spend it with great friends.
