Here on vacation. I love illy coffee, but of couple times I have gone here, the baristas give off a bad vibe. This after coming here twice that I am writing this. I have also watched them interact with other customers and they are like robots. You ask them a question and they answer. No greets or anything when you enter.. it's like they're annoyed to have to interact with you. The baristas will socialize and laugh amongst themselves but not with customers. After trying two other local coffee shops I decided to go with Illy because I've had them a number of times at the Venetian|Palazzo in Vegas. Their cafe mochas were the most legit vs the two other local coffee shops I tried. Solid balance of chocolate, espresso, and milk. read more

I have passed this coffee shops several dozen times walking between offices over the past year and finally got the chance to go in today and found it delightful. Brightly lit, unlike a lot of coffee shops, you can not go wrong with illy espresso beans and the baristas were very helpful. A big plus when they didn't mind or make any 'annoyed faces' at me altering my order after I already paid - something I have a bad habit of doing at coffee shops because I tend to want everything...hehe. Stopped in this morning for a quick cafe mocha and scone. My daughter had a hot chocolate and a biscotti. Everything was fantastic. The coffees were hot and full of flavor, and the baked goods were sweet and a perfect compliment to our drinks. Good location and cozy atmosphere. Servers were friendly and courteous. read more

I was here yesterday and stopped in for a quick breakfast and coffee. I rarely give 1 star reviews but I was in for a complete surprise. The first barista informed that there were no longer any ham and cheese croissants left - which was fine. She suggested an egg and cheese one instead. I agreed and waited for my food. Same girl hands me a seemingly warm sandwich. I take a bite and the center where the gross egg patty (not even fresh eggs but an egg patty) is still super cold and rock hard. The girl who had taken my order was no longer to be found so I approached the only other worker and let her know my sandwich was still cold. Her response, "It came from the cold case." No offer to reheat my food more fully or anything. I was stunned at the lack of customer service and it made no sense for my "sandwich" to be warm around the edges but cold in the center regardless of whether it came from the cold case. I ended up tossing the food out because it was really quite gross. I definitely won't be returning to this location and giving a heads up to my friends who work at NBC Tower. read more

This is one of the best coffee shops in Chicago. I spend my time trying new (to me) coffee shops all the time. Not only is the coffee delicious, but the people that work there are all great. I will not visit this cafe again. Unfortunately, it is right around the corner from my apartment so this hurts me far more than Illy. We visited this afternoon and had tied our pups leashes to the patio fencing (within full view of the counter so no risk to our dogs!) so we could go in and place our order. We were then going to sit at an outside table. The barista told us that we were not allowed to have our dogs anywhere near the property even leashed to the outside of the fencing. I really do not have a problem with the information communicated - that's fine, no problem, we will move on. But, in this instance, it was the manner of delivery which was so offensive. This guy was smug, dismissive, and arrogant - we were really surprised that he would speak so angrily and seemingly pissed off to semi-regular customers and about something really minor. We left and shall not return. I've noticed that this guy has been pretty unfriendly in the past so I guess we should not have been surprised. There are plenty of other spots (Dollop!) so we'll take our business elsewhere. read more

TL;DR-- the employees are awful. Spend your money elsewhere until they fix that. Apparently, there are several other people that have had problems with employees here. Id like to preface this by saying I was a barista for 8 years and managed a shop for 3 of those years. Most of the time when I buy a $2 cup of coffee, I tip a dollar because I love baristas. Came here after work today. It was hot so I ordered an iced coffee. I asked for it in a large cup so I could fill the space with milk. I was told no, that's not allowed because I'm still using product and they have to charge me for it. I'm not a complainer. I know milk is built into prices because, as I said, I managed for years. But I'm not a complainer. So I said, okay, just a small cup. I asked for light ice. I was not out-right refused this request, but the man filled the cup to the brim with ice, ignoring my request. I'm not a complainer, so I said okay. I just didn't tip, which happens almost never. Then we go to sit outside. It's hot, and it's past noon. So I slide the umbrella over so the sun isn't in my eyes while I read. A few minutes later, BUILDING SECURITY tells me I can't move furniture because it's a policy. So now I'm confused. Building security? I asked why. The guy looked almost as baffled as me. I said I moved the umbrella so it would block sun, the very function of patio umbrellas. He shrugged. A couple minutes later, he returns and says it has to be moved back. By now I notice the barista in the window with the smuggest look I've EVER seen on his face. I said okay to everything else. But you call BUILDING SECURITY on me because I moved an umbrella to block sun. I am a young woman just over 100 pounds, and I don't think there is ANYTHING about my person which says "Dangerous". Why he felt that he could not tell me himself that I wasn't allowed to move furniture is beyond me. So I confronted him, told him I wanted a refund on my drink because I was leaving. He seemed more than happy with this. (As a manager, if I found out an employee refunded drinks in that manner without even an apology there would be a disciplinary action and termination if it was a repeat offense-- no joke.) At this point I asked him to explain why I couldn't move the furniture to be comfortable. He said it was against the permit to have the umbrella hanging over the patio-- something which was never communicated to me. Had it been, I would have simply slid the umbrella six inches back. I asked him why he didn't just tell me that himself, and he told me I should ask for permission to move the furniture next time. Excuse me. WHAT? This guy's entire deal was I did not give him the power to accept or deny my request to move the umbrella. That's why he called building security on me. No joke. This is a person who is paid to work here. He lost business, he lost material when I returned my drink, and he caused me to post a review online. I'm NOT a habitual complainer. I'm an incredibly reasonable person. I just think the employees of Illy should be reasonable too. To whomever the manager is: the reviews of your shop are mostly positive. The product is great. But there at 20 other shops within a few blocks that also have great product, and they are not harassed by employees. If there's an attitude problem with a worker, nip it in the bud or terminate the bastard. That is absolutely no way to run a coffee business. People are there for the atmosphere as much as the product. read more
