I like this place. It's nothing fancy, but the menu has a lot of options, the servers are always friendly, and the food is your usual, good NYC diner quality fair. I've been here many times over the years, and stopped there right before our Winter weather decided to take a dump on us. I ordered a BLT with extra mayo, fries, coleslaw and some pickles. It was very good. The place is clean and has the sort of decor you'd expect in just about any diner type setting. The experience at Esquire Diner was disappointing due to how my food allergy was handled. I clearly informed the waiter that I am allergic to tomatoes and specifically requested that none be included. My gyro platter arrived with tomatoes mixed into the salad, and although the waiter acknowledged the mistake, the solution was not handled properly. Instead of preparing a fresh salad, it appeared the tomatoes were simply removed from the original plate and the lettuce rearranged. I later found tomato seeds still in the salad, confirming cross-contamination. This raised serious concerns about food safety and trust. I have always worked with attorneys (past and present) and find them intelligent with perspective. The Original Worlds Fair $18.85 Saturday brunch for Belgian waffles and fresh strawberries with whipped cream was delicious. It was fresh, fluffy and delicious at $18.85 + NYC tax = totaling $20.50. I hoped for strawberry syrup the same embedded on ice cream as topping. I am always enamored with strawberries. The male waiter provided pancake syrup and butter for reasonable accommodation request. This male waiter did check-in during my meal which I was astonished and appreciative that I am, at long last, NOT invisible. Oh! I am human. I am a customer. I often dine alone. I exist to matter. I am one life in the smallest measurement. The check bill is distributed the old school way - handwritten on a claim check form perforated at the top. Lately , everytime i go, they are complaining the business is down. I am gonna tell you why! They started to charge you for credit card fees as well. I left a big compliant about that to Crossbay diner. Credit card fees belong to the establishments, NOT TO THE CUSTOMER. People will think not twice, three times to go out and eat. For the short term, business might think that they got away with it, but in the long term, businesses like this won't survive. Let's come to my breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day. I am a complainer, i know that, but don't give me any extra reason to complain more. And you can learn from my perspective! I ordered eggs over easy with corned beef hash, fries and gravy. My eggs were over cooked, server got me new ones. It is not corned beef hash, IT WAS CORNED MUTTON. To me I don't care, i eat goat cheese and not a lot of people eat that. Mutton has a distinct taste, not everyone will appreciate that. Fires were good, but, gravy was too thick, probably from over night, needs to be loose and water down. Now, I don't need to ask my server every time, change this, change that. What a shame! First of all, I should warn anyone who reads my review that this is NOT about the food whatsoever! This is strictly about the horrible owner who is such a turn-off to the establishment. The food may be good, but I'll never know because I know for sure I will NEVER eat here. The owner is a miserable, wretched little person, if you could even call her that at all, because she has no heart whatsoever. Ok, so this diner is located right next to a preschool, where 2-5 year olds attend. I don't know if this lady hates children or what, but she has a HUGE parking lot and some parents quickly park there to drop-off/pick-up their children. I personally have parked there (in the morning for drop-off) only 3 times. Twice because I didn't know how to get to the back of the school, and once when I got lost trying to find the back of the school. Now, I understand her concerns about pick-up (as that's in the afternoon and more busy), but in the morning? Each time I've gone, there is literally only 2 cars or less! The place is empty! And I heard her that day I was late screaming at the principal of the school (who's the nicest lady ever)! How dare her! No compassion for the parents! Her wicked character tells me about the type of establishment she runs. I'd like her to try to speak to me like that. Just because you own a diner doesn't mean you can treat people anyway you want. You know a diner is a diner. But this is a place where the owners work alongside the employees and you see them enjoying the food on their breaks at the lunch counter. Everyday that have a choice of 4 homemade soups and classic dishes that are menu photo quality. My standard grilled cheese gets free slaw and a house made, half sour pickle. I forgot how big a cup and bowl of soup were and of course I chose the bowl, which ended up being a cereal bowl The servers are like your tough, Italian aunty who still loves to party and wear makeup, rough but sweet. Agnieshka was our waitress, very nice and friendly. As we sat we were served complimentary cole slaw and a pickle. Good. The slaw coarse and creamy, the pickle crisp, cool and delightfully sour. We felt like sandwich night. I opted for a Chicken Salad & Bacon Triple Decker, substituted French Fries for a side salad. The Chicken Salad was kind of bland. Some seasoning with salt and pepper did the job. The bacon was crispy. Lettuce and tomato crisp and very fresh. The side salad perfect, Lettuce, Tomato, Cucumber, and Red Onions came with a side of creamy garlic dressing. The BLT standard. Too much lettuce on the sandwich. Nice firm tomato. The bread a bit too dark(toasted) for my taste. We capped the night sharing Bread Pudding a super generous size of moist pudding. You can taste the cinnamon. As the spoon goes deeper into the whipped cream and pudding, the bottom is vanilla custard like with golden raisings. Delicious. The espresso was bland. I have been here before and the service and food was always good. Tonight there was 4 of us at 8:30pm. It wasn't busy maybe 12 tables total and 4/5 waitresses. The host/manager an older man was behind the counter and when I walked in he looked up and said "Yes?" Like I was bothering him. I said table for 4. He took some menus and started walking I follow to almost the back of the restaurant. It Was Freezing with AC! The annoyed host just about throws the menus on the table slams his hand on the table and says "There you are" umm, ok.. thank you?? We sat Down and waited almost 15 minutes for Our waitress Anna to come up to us and when she did the first thing she said was "Are You Ready to Order?" My friend noticed as I was looking at the menu the waitress rolled her eyes at me (I'm assuming because I took a minute to order) My husband didn't think she was that bad except that her perfume smelled really bad! (Not joking) All of us put in our order and she repeated it Wrong or did not hear most of it! Another 10/15 minutes go by and we get the cole slaw and pickles. We finally get our food after 30 minutes at least and we get 3 out of 4 dishes. ANOTHER 15 minutes waiting for eggs! Like she forgot the 4th order! I asked for 1000 island dressing and it came another 5 minutes later. The onion rings were over cooked and tasted like they were recooked in oil. My egg salad sandwich was ok. I was concerned because it was warm and not cold as it should be. At first I did not want it because I was nervous of getting sick because it was left out. She told me the kitchen promised it was cold but the heater they put it under was hot. (That makes no sense but ok) The Italian omelette, pita vegetarian pizza & tuna platter my family liked. I went to the front to pay with a credit card and the guy/ manager did not ask how everything was. NOTHING! Just rang my order then with a strong hang slammed the pen on the credit receipt. A different waitress actually said good bye to me. Not Happy, Not Happy at all! I so did not feel welcome here. So many diners to go to around here. They really need to up there game from A to Z! Boy oh boy did I have to come out of retirement for this one! Meeting someone for the first time can be a daunting experience, so can trying to find somewhere to eat during these COVID times. First date and I were trying to find a place that could satisfy all taste buds so why not a diner? Enter Esquire Diner. Sounds nice doesn't it? It looks nice too, outside and in. They even had tents set up for an outside eating experience.......maybe we should have stayed outside. Like back the car up and stayed outside a few miles away. But we didn't. We went inside (masks on of course) and were politely greeted at the door and had our wrist temperature taken. A man kindly escorted us to a table near the back and asked if we preferred tables even further back.........there was literally only one other table being used and the place is quite large why were we taken to the back and to the only booth with the lights blown out? Ok, we aren't picky people we sat at the broken light table as we didn't want to be sent to the Sunken Place farther back. Maybe this was foreshadowing of things to come but my intuition must be on vacation. So there we sit, two strangers having stilted conversation when the waiter appeared and quickly brought my water. I think the water lowkey was the best part of the night truth be told. We ordered our food and continued in our light banter when the waiter brings out this absolutely delightful bowl of a pickle in coleslaw. Did I saw delightful? The word I meant was dreadful. Who asked for that? I dont mean to judge if coleslaw is your thing and all but for normal people like me it turned my stomach. I felt bad, I didn't want it to go to waste or worse, be scraped into a churning bucket for the next guest. We never touched the coleslaw and he never thought to take it back. He also brought out a complimentary (I hope it was complimentary) sad looking plate of breadsticks and butter. I love me some bread and butter but again why were we given this stuff? I'm trying to do low carb so I really didn't need that stuff in my face, mocking me. Even some boring sesame breadsticks are tempting for a carb addict. Then the real fun began, yes the REAL fun. i asked for a double cheeseburger with bacon (No Bun), I was told that the burgers would be separate. Folks they really wasted a plate putting a cheese burger patty on each plate instead of just putting them together, Like wtf. If Burger King and McDonalds can make it happen why cant you Esquire? I wasn't asking for the tender flesh of Billy Goats slapped on rye topped with the rarest of truffle oils. Insult upon injury they FORGOT MY BACON!!!!. Yes they did hunny! Before we could say a word our waiter had waltzed off in a hurry and was never to be seen again. Well we did see him. I saw him outside folding up the chairs under the tent, I get it they're understaffed. Then I saw him mopping, painting, doing open heart surgery......he did everything but COME BACK TO OUR TABLE! We were literally the only customers and maybe it was hard for him to see us given our broken lightbulb but wtf dude we were the ONLY customers. Now we weren't people to make a fuss and besides there was no one to make a fuss at so we sat there and ate our food the best way we knew how. Glumly Then the unthinkable happens. I see the problem a mile away......my date has far more items to consume as all I had to eat were my two little Crabby patties (which were actually good). I couldn't possibly finish my food and sit there and watch him eat in awkward silence for 20-30 minutes. That's madness! I had to stall......think Ariel.....think! So I made the ultimate sacrifice......I tore open those stale ass breadsticks and went to work. Esquire, YOU made me go off my low carb diet and I hope you can live with yourselves. You know it didnt end there, my friend had treated himself to a steak. Well guess what? That steak was as enjoyable as a colonoscopy for him, he doused it A1 (that I had to grab off a table for him of course) but said he needed a scalpel to cut it and it was too fatty. I believe he was only able to enjoy his mashed potatoes and his salad. As we sat there defeated we expected someone to come save us at some point but help never came. We expected that we were either being held for ransom or they wanted us to stay for a sleep pver but we had shit to do. Finally after way too long of politeness my date jumped to his feet and that's when the waiter came with the check. As my date drove me home we passed Wendy's, Burger King, McDonald's etc and that was the first time I had ever wished someone had taken me to a fast food joint for a first date plus I was still a bit hungry! Semi small Dinner on Crossbay, near Woodhaven Blvd, typical diner with home made Fries,Eggs and Bacon, the coffe was strong, the service was great, but the prices was overrated, make shure you dont order extra, the waiter will not suggest any Item thats equal or similar, also check your bill sometimes you can barely read the bill, old school way of making a profit. Oh boy, where to begin. The booth was dirty. Crumbs were on the seats & table was a bit sticky. It was around 330am. Literally empty. Staff sitting around. You'd hope they'd use this time to clean up. However, let's move on. The waiter was ok. He didn't seem to know much about the food or what was available. The bacon egg and cheese was bland. Ask for a toasted roll, not toasted. Coffee was luke warm. Told the server it was cold and he replied would you like some hot water in it. Like, what? The hot water for our tea was also Luke warm. Think they need to get their coffee machine fixed. The silverware were spotty and not the cleanest. The waffle was good. Now, this is where it went down hill. There were flies flying about and There was literally a ROACH! - crawling around the booth across us. They called the server over and he said ... "it's ok, this happens." Then proceeded to get a napkin and kill the roach on the chair they were sitting on... that killed our appetites and the other guests. Esquire is a 24/7 diner right there in the Queens area and very close to JFK International. I stumbled upon this joint during one of my frequent 24 hour stop in go trips to NY or hrough JFK Airport on route to a European destination The breakfast menu especially at 3 to 5 am looks amazing as there is a lot to choose from and there servings are big. It's definitely better than your typical IHOP, Denny's or Carrows and the pricing $10 to $8 avg per plate. Nothing great to that blew me away that I would recommend but nothing bad either. Main thing I was satisfied with my breakfast plates. For a reliable meal on your way back to the airport after a 24 hour stint in the City that doesn't sleep Esquire is your place. read more

Ive been here a few times and i love the idea of local food. There mozzerella sticks are to die for and I'm in love with them, i think its worth the price. The staff are sometimes a mix of polite or trying to rush you out the door. Usually, the service and staff are so much better in the mornings. They are attentive and usually accomdating. When I come during the evening, i often feel rush and feel like the waiters want me out the door. Which sucks, i love having a quiet conversation over comfort food, but it is what it is. There were about four other tables in the whole diner with customers, a lot of staff sitting around. The table on the left had a customer a gentleman who just recieved his order. We ordered a turkey burger deluxe and mozzarella burger deluxe and coffees. The gentleman man sitting toward the right of us complained that there was something in his food a bug a spider I believe the only reason we know this is because he got upset and once he left the staff started complaining in English and Spanish. Our whole meal was hearing them complain about this customer. how they treat to customers and not friends with their customers and how they always complain. This conversation was between almost four employees three men and one female who was on the phone alot. They stopped for a while then a one of the employees who wore a white tshirt and was mopping I believe continued literally while standing a three away from us. Talking about customers and the gentleman in piticular and Whst he found on his plate. As another customer I don't want to hear about what May have been found on a persons plate. My turkey burger tasted like the meat was soaked in only vinegar. The fries were over done and I was even afraid to say something cause the were already talking about the other customer. When we paid I asked the woman to please let me know when the regular managers would be there so I can address the concerns. I have been a customer at this diner for more then two decades I live in the area an go once in a while. I have never had issues like this before but I don't feel comfortable going back alone cause if the food but the staff training on how to deal with customers is not there anymore. It's Tuesday morning and I'm at the Esquire Diner. I stopped in because it ws raining and I was on my way to the Roosevelt subway station in Queens. As soon as I was seated in a booth, my fairy godmother appeared. Rula was kind and welcoming as she brought a bagel and cream cheese (the least expensive thing I could find on the menu), and endless cups of coffee and water. She treated me as well as if I had ordered an expensive meal. I got a chance to dry off, relax and use my phone to make arrangements for the rest of my trip. The french fries tasted like ancient cooking oil and the diner smelled like moth ball cologne. The eggs tasted fishy (how is that possible?) and the only flavor the bacon had was tummy ache flavor. The locals who were dining next to us,behind us, and in front of us reminded me if the people from Grease or Westside Story were in their 70's and 80's but still rocking the duck ass haircuts, chain wallets, and leather jackets. I wondered to myself if maybe 60 years ago they were all part of some kind of doo wop NYC street gang and now they live out the rest of their days having "Remember when" conversations at this crappy diner. The waitresses were in a word...shitty When the check came my heart skipped a beat. Two bacon and egg sandwiches on a roll with fries and two cokes and a coffee cost almost 30.00 bucks not including the tip. I could have gone to the grocery store and bought all the ingredients to make this meal plus a tooth brush, can of coffee, a box of Lucky Charms and a pack of gum for that price.
