We hired Essa for general remodel/renovations because the bid was cheaper than others. However, we have to give poor and very unsatisfactory rating. 1. His subcontractor completely screwed up the construction of the kitchen island. We repeatedly and explicitly told him and his worker we wanted the waterfall countertop but they didn't do it and had to redo and touched up the gap between the drywall and side edge. 2. His workers are horrendous- they didn't install the (reused) doors correctly and they incorrectly install the closet doors 3. They failed inspection on the electrical outlets, and have to redo (making unnecessary gaps on the wall that had to be filled in) 4. We asked to install a wall to separate a new office from the back corridor. However on rainy days the new wall has black mold on the top coming directly from the roof. Nearing the end of the project, it was very slow and his response was draggy and unresponsive. read more

Essa and his team were in constant contact with us throughout the entire process, and they worked quickly with our HOA to provide proof of insurance and all other necessary documentation in order to start the project quickly. For context, we had no fewer than 10 contractors provide quotes. We chose Essa because, in addition to a competitive quote, Essa carefully listened to us and thought about our goals more than anyone else. When Essa came to assess the project, he provided us some easy solutions that would save us money on supplies and labor, and still meet our functional needs. We appreciated his honesty and problem-solving skills, especially since contractors are currently in high demand and could easily jack up their prices in this market. After we accepted his bid, Essa and crew showed up on time, took great care to do quality work that preserved the aesthetics of the home, and cleaned up the job site when done. Essa and his team did our bathroom in 2014. Stayed within our budget and also finished the project on time. It was a complete tear down. Our bathroom turned out great!! They follow all the rules when it comes to obtaining permits. Now in 2017, we called him again because our deck remodel. The deck we had him do was a fairly large deck and we also asked him to place stairs. Once again he worked with our budget and he finished on time! Our deck was done in 1 week!!! Essa and his team were also really nice guys. They arrived on time and they cleaned up after each day of work. Essa is easy to work with and is always professional. Extremely frustrated. We never hired Essa's Construction and we never will now. Our upstairs neighbor hired his team to redo her bathroom. During that project, our bathroom was impacted: we had a leak through our ceiling fan, our lights came out and much of our paint started cracking from the work upstairs. Living in SF, you would think they would either prepare or work more carefully to not impact other condos in the same building. As frustrating as that is, I do understand, we live in the city, tight spaces, etc... but he was not apologetic at all about the situation and we had to hunt him down to come fix everything. They did fix the leak right away but the same day did an awful paint job and left us with uneven paint and broke one of my vases in the bathroom through more carelessness and unprofessional behavior. He finally came back to redo the paint job after more than a month and now we're left with an even worse situation, paint on our fixtures, marble floor, tub and uneven everywhere. It's really upsetting because we never hired him and we're dealing with the unprofessional workmanship. I just couldn't believe it seemed like he was doing us a favor when he was actually fixing up his mistakes. Now we have to find another painter to redo our bathroom and undo the mess he left. We actually redid our bathroom last year with a different contractor and did not experience any problems like this... so just beware. We recently hired Essa to complete a kitchen and bathroom renovation project. I was a little hesitant at first, because his bid was more reasonable than another larger contracting firm. However, we are completely satisfied with the excellent work Essa performed, and feel that we got an extremely good value. We retained Essa because we were placing our condo on the market to sell; both budget and timing were critical for the effort. The bathroom was a "back to the studs" renovation with replacement of everything. The kitchen involved replacement of the counter-top, painting of cabinets, and replacement of the sink and faucets. Even though the City identified that we would need to install a new electrical panel (not anticipated because we were not touching circuits), Essa still finished all the work on time. He also immediately brought a great electrician on board to accomplish the electrical panel addition/relocation, at a cost that was much more reasonable than we feared. Essa's crew worked extremely hard to bring our project in on schedule, with Essa never asking for a time extension. He was professional, let us know status as the work progressed, and stayed within budget. This was probably the easiest process that we have experienced yet in working with a construction contractor. This place was horrible. I had a cabinet fixed and they just slapped puffy on it and left. Didn't paint sand or any quality workmanship. They charged me 180 bucks and said if I wanted the paint I would need to go buy paint and then call them. I'll just call a different repair man who actually does it right the first time. read more

I hired Essa to remodel my bathroom. It was the first construction project I've taken on so I didn't really know what to expect and learned a lot along the way. Overall I'm thrilled with how my bathroom turned out - and it was a complete tear-down-to-the-studs. Most things went really well, a few could have been better, so overall I give Essa and his team 4 stars. * Honesty / Integrity - 5 stars: Let's face it, you're giving access to your place to strangers. And I'm putting a lot of faith in someone to guide me on a project that I don't have much experience with. I found Essa to be a very trustworthy partner. I never once felt like he was trying to take advantage of my naivete and thought both his prices and suggestions were fair. There were no surprises. * Design / Flexibility - 5 stars: I didn't have anyone helping me with the design or material choices, did it all myself. But as a result I was a little cautious about ordering everything in advance and wanted to see how the shower tile looked once it was installed before ordering the floor tile I had picked out, etc. This meant that Essa and his team couldn't work as fast as they probably would have liked since we had to wait for materials every time we moved to the next step of the project. Which was fine with me and I really, really appreciated how flexible Essa was and willing to accommodate this way of working. I had heard awful stories of projects getting stalled for months at a time because of things like this and the other clients that they are juggling simultaneously but Essa managed to make it work. He also had some great recommendations for suppliers to use - I ended up with a much nicer vanity countertop than I had originally planned because of his connections. * Attention to Detail - 4 stars: I'm a perfectionist. While everything turned out mostly the way I wanted there were a few relatively minor things along the way that I either had to have his team fix, I fixed, or will live with and hope no one else but me notices. Things like vanity door handles not being perfectly straight, vanity doors not adjusted to close properly (I fixed) the wall thermostat initially was crooked (they fixed), some of the tile is a tiny bit uneven, there were bits of grout sealant and pinprick drops of paint on the tiles that I scraped off, etc. The paint job was pretty good but I also had to do some touch-ups in places that were missed or spotty. * Communication - 4 stars: Essa has a team of people working with him. As a result sometimes my requests got lost in translation. I found that things went best when I was home when his team was there so that I could make absolutely sure they had the right direction from me since Essa was not always on site supervising. This saved me from what might have otherwise been a few mishaps. But this might be common practice when working with a contractor and his team vs. someone who does all the work themselves. So when researching contractors it might be worthwhile asking exactly who is going to do what work. How much will the contractor himself (or herself!) do, what work will their team do, etc. It was also a bit challenging to know exactly when different members of his team were going to be at my place doing the work so that I could plan my schedule around it and be home as much as possible. But in the end I was there when the most critical work was being done and was available to answer questions from his team to make sure everything went well. I would strongly recommend this when working with Essa or any contractor. As a few recent reviewers have mentioned Essa was out of the country and not reachable for a few weeks at the beginning of my project and again towards the end. Both times he let me know that he was going to be gone and we were able to work around his schedule. I don't know how often he travels but this would also be something to discuss in advance. Essa is an absolute rock star contractor!! I had a laundry list of things that needed to be done, prior to a tenant moving in and I had less than a week to get everything done. We're talking large ceiling crack repairs, concrete work, floor work, wall repair/patching/painting, cat door removal/repair and bathroom fixture repair.
