Haters gonna hate! I find most of the previous reviews are from a bunch of whiners who are mad they did not get their way. No doubt they were douchey to their server. As for the CA reviewers, I can't dispute because I never been to N or S California so you can have that. In my opinion, I like Estebans better than El Cazador. Granted, the food there is not the stuff your mama made in her "cocina", but in a pinch it works. I am Hispanic and I can't tell you how many times my hubby says to me that my food is better. But hey, any dish I don't have to make myself is 5 stars for me! LOL! So yeah, don't expect home cooking here, but it really isn't as bad as the other reviews say it is. The only criticism I have about this place is that when you arrive, it is a matter of luck until someone sees you to sit you down. Otherwise, you will either be waiting around for quite a while, or you will have to wander all the way back into the restaurant until someone there sees you. Fantastic food and atmosphere! Came here on a Saturday night for some good food after finding out a nearby restaurant was already closed. Pleasantly surprised! Was promptly seated and had our drinks and food served quickly! Quality of food was excellent and size was generous! Excellent service and food! Would come here again! We have been here twice. Both times we had good service. Prompt, polite, and timely. The place is pretty clean, and doesnt smell like a honeybucket, so that was a huge plus. I havent had much luck lately in unfamiliar Mexican eateries. I didnt get that feeling like they took stuff out of a bag and nuked it. Both times I had a combo platter. As previously mentioned , it's just kind of so so. Not bad at all.. just kind of ordinary. Like maybe they are playing it safe to accomodate a gentler pallate... like maybe old people. I have nothing against old folks... just saying that they tend to eat milder foods. I dunno.. it's just a shot in the dark as to why a Mexican restaurant wouldnt have spicy food. Although a good friend of mine (who hails from a Mexican family) once told me it isnt ALWAYS about spicy (BTW this guy makes THE BEST chicken enchiladas with green sauce I have EVER had in my life). I understand this about the sometimes lack of spice, but the food I would expect to be spicy should be... well... spicy. My Enchilada was okay.. the sauce was just, meh.. so so. My taco was pretty much like any other taco anywhere else. My Relleno was alright. Not the best and not the worst. Beans and rice were alright. Nothing to write home about. I thought the chips and salsa were good. Salsa wasnt anything amazing but it seemed fresh enough,and didnt look/taste like it had been poured back out of a previously unused bowl (dont laugh, I know a place that does this regularly). They carry an average beer selection, nothing oustanding. They do carry some top shelf liquors. The first visit the wife had a darn good margarita. So probably wondering what would bring me back and cause me to rate it a 3. It's clean! Reasonable prices, and the staff was very nice, and we got our food in a timely fashion. Im still not sure why our waitress didnt bring our food (another lady did). Maybe she was new? At any rate she did a fine job. My son did point out the interesting "art collection" on the walls. Our first visit. We both ordered the chili relleno lunch special. When it arrived the plate looked good. The beans and rice had great flavor. When we cut into the chili all we got was breading. After digging through all the breading, the chili was about 3 inches long and an inch wide. When we questioned the waiter his response was the big chili's are expensive, this is all you get for 7 dollars. It turns out the lunch special wasn't special at all. He did take them back and asked if we wanted to replace it. By then we were full of the tasty chips and great salsa. I did feel like we were rushed from the moment we sat down but kudos to them for trying to make it right. read more

I just moved to the area and was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a great Mexican restaurant. I Googled best Mexican restaurants in Oak Harbor and Esteban's came up. I was not disappointed. Their chicken tamales and chicken enchilada with the crema sauce and enchilada sauce were spectacular. You need to eat here and enjoy the huge portions of food, my servers name was Jesus and was really, really a good waiter. Enjoy! read more

I may be too biased to fairly evaluate how good/bad this place is....I'm from Southern California and have years of REAL Mexican food experience...as in..made in someones home..by a native. I've also had Mexican food at restaurants and fast food joints. However, I had never been to a Mexican restaurant in Washington... I ordered a deluxe beef burrito (deluxe meaning it had beans and rice inside and sour cream and guacamole) but there were no sides with it, just a burrito. The size was fine. I didn't realize though, that when they say 'beef' they mean ground beef...apparently shredded beef is it's own category. What it boils down to: I paid $9.95 for a burrito I probably could have purchased at Taco Bell for less than half the price. It was not a terrible burrito, but I wouldn't call it tasty...and I wouldn't pay $9.95 for it again. The service was good, no complaints there. Maybe other items on the menu are better... read more

I'm from San Diego, and any southern Californian will be the first to judge the Mexican food from anywhere else, pretty harshly I might add. That being said, after being constantly disappointed with the Mexican food all around town, I found this gem. Amazing staff, amazing food, prompt service. You get your standard american mexican food with decent service and good atmosphere. I would have liked to see our server be more attentive and not let our drinks go dry and our tortilla chip basket kept full, but hey what can you expect from a mexican food restaurant in Oak Harbor? the price was not a high value either for the quality or uniqueness of the food, i was disappointed in my 20 dollar bill for one dish and a soda. I definately would recommend the restuarant and have nothing bad to say, just dont get your hopes up for some authentic yummy carne or tomatillo. It was classic american mexican food read more

My favorite Mexican Restaurant to eat at when i come visit the rock. I live in Las Vegas, so when you compare Mexican food down in the southwest to Mexican food in Washington state of course there is going to be a big difference in the spicy factor. So I have not had authentic mexican food in quite a while and decided to take up a friendly church member's invitation to meet here. I am so happy I did!! I ordered a beef enchilada and a beef taco with beans and rice during lunch. It was less than $10. It was very fresh and the service was fast. The staff is very friendly and patient. Terribly fake tasting food! My husband and I went in for a margarita and appetizer and left extremely disappointed. I'm almost convinced that Taco Bell is better; my husband couldn't even finish his tacos because of how oily, mushy, and fake the meat tasted. Also, The salsa had a piece of cilantro paper in it about 2 inches long. They were very poorly seasoned with a fake taco shell (right out of the box). The margaritas were $10 for a medium and tasted more like a virgin one. I don't know who Esteban is, but he needs to step it up. read more

Oh my gosh I had a HORRIBLE experience at Esteban's today which shocked me. They have amazing foods BUT they disappointed me. Well when we got our receipt, we were pissed that the waiter assumed that I wanted medium margarita when I did not know there is sizes, he didn't even asked me what size. They also increased the prices on foods and alcohol without mentioning it to us before we ordered AND it wasn't on the menu. I told the waiter that he did not ask me what size and just assumed, he said he is sorry and can't change the receipt. If I knew that they offer in sizes, I would had small one since it is cheaper, they also gave us same size foods. For example, he had ordered bigger plate and I ordered small plate. Well he only had two small burritos which is same size as my large burrito, if we knew that, my husband would had ordered small plate to save $2. I do not think they should increases prices UNTIL it is on the menu. read more

The food was good and the service was very good. My problem has to do with commitment. I found this restaurant on Restaurant.Com, bought a gift certificate and tried to use it. The manager refused to honor the certificate amount and said that Restaurant.Com made a mistake about the amount. I do not think this is so; I believe the manager wanted the advertisement and the extra business but did not want to "pay up" for it. Bad Business. I will not go back for this reason only. read more

Good food and service. Nothing remarkable, but for Oak Harbor, this place is equal to Mi Pueblo's for taste and quality, but the food comes out faster and you don't have the nightclub crowd to deal with if you just want good Mexican food to go with your movie. Better quality and taste than El Cazador's but without the big chain atmosphere. Relatively inexpensive, I take my family here once or twice a month. It's less expensive than Mi Pueblo's but the atmosphere is more small family run Mexican than larger restaurant with night club and bar. They do have a small bar in back though. read more

My s/o and I ate here for the second time after having a really great experience the first time. Boy did we ever make a bad decision. He ordered the super carne asada nachos and I ordered the enchilada jalisco. First issue was his carne asada tasted like old dog food (exaggeration) but really it tasted like it was 2 days old. My corn tortillas were super mushy like they made the enchiladas that morning. My rice was so old it was translucent. On top of either of us barely touching the food the server waked by us 4 times (each time making eye contact) with out asking if we needed anything or how did everything taste before we finally flagged her over. We asked for the check and she asked if we needed to go boxes to which we replied no because the food wasn't very good and the service was lacking as well. She then said okay and walked off. We flagged another server for our check and gave him the run down. He said that the server didn't speak English (not our problem why is she serving tables then?) and his reply for the meat was that they recently switched cuts to save money (savings not reflected in their prices). We were not offered to try anything else and they couldn't even comp our drinks. We paid our bill in full and left our full plates on the table. We will be voting with our wallets and word of mouth. Maybe I was rude but your in the SERVICE industry. Sorry not sorry. read more

Mediocre and bland. The chips, salsa, and margarita were actually pretty good, but the rest was bland bland bland. The Pico de Gallo was completely flavorless, the guacamole was bland and processed. The tortilla soup was in need of salt, and had shredded chicken that did not work well with a spoon. I never did get a glass of water. All in all very meh. I will not be back. read more

The food was bland, I mean really bland. When I think Mexican food I think spices and just awesomeness but not at this place. The food was weak. The beans came with three pieces of what look like shredded cheddar cheese on top and the rice tasted like it came out of some cheap box of instant rice. Plus they charge for drink refills. The only good quality about the place was the staff, they were really nice and helpful but I guess they are trying to make up for the fact that their food basically sucks. read more
