I am half jewish with a huge jewish fro & the accompanying bodyhair that goes with that privilege. My husband is actually a cosmetic surgeon with a laser machine in his office to do laser hair removal. My opinion is that electrolysis is the ONLY way to get rid of coarse hair permanently. Mine is coarse and blonde, so laser was NOT working for me. It is a blessing to have found Esther's clinic. She and Terry are the most professional, lovely, and together women I have met in a long time. I always feel great going in their clinic -- it's a no frills, get down to business, and do GREAT work kind of place. In just two months of regular appts, they have nearly removed some of my most menacing unwanted hair. For those of you who are scared, the electrolysis is not painful, just a strange sensation of heat and vibration. I've had laser peels at our cosmetic surgery office & that is much more painful. If you are wise, you will not go to Terry Matthews for electrolysis. During the first appointment, Terry explained to me that due to my being biracial (black/white) I am not a candidate for laser and my skin will burn. Now, either she is a liar or not as knowledgeable as she should be. I have started making appointments with Eternal Youth Spa. Not only is the laser hair removal cheaper, faster, and more efficient, it is also $45 cheaper than the hour service given from Terry. If you have darker skin (Black, Asian, Hispanic) do not allow her to lie to you in order to retain your services, especially if you have a lot of hair that needs to be removed. Small amounts of hair warrant electrolysis. However, laser is cheaper, more efficient, and less expensive. These people are still living in the stone age. Make an appointment with Eternal Youth Spa and forget about this place. read more

I've been going to Teri for a little over a year and the results are outstanding! When I turned 26, all of the blonde/lighter hairs on my face began growing in very dark and coarse. Before Teri, I was tweezing 20-30 minutes, twice a day. My skin was beginning to damage and scar - I knew I needed an effective and permanent solution. My dermatologist advised against laser hair removal for the face - as it's not 100% effective and most hair will continue growing back. Electrolysis was his strong recommendation for permanent removal - and it has worked! I started with 60 minute sessions, every week for 6 months. I began to see results after about 3 months (which was faster than I anticipated). I slowly reduced the amount of time per session and am now down to just 30 minutes, every other week. My chin and neck are completely are free of all visible/dark hairs and I'm now having electrolysis done on my upper lip (I might be addicted to the results). :) My skin has never looked better and I save so much time, effort and energy not having to tweeze every morning/night. Had an appointment today with Terri. They are actually at a new location that's right off the highway. You must pay for parking directly in front of the building, but down further and the side street (residential) has free parking. I was interested in using the Blend method which is best for course or curly hair, and that is what they use at this location. I called many electrologist and most were using short wave method which is best for fine, straight hair. She did a great job and I scheduled my next appointment. Only one concern, most places that I've visit use disposable needles. This place provides you with your own needle; it is sterilized and stored for you till your next visit. I travel for work and have had this procedure in both Atlanta, NYC, and Peoria; and they all used disposable needles. Maybe I'm just paranoid:)....but you can purchase a new needle on each visit which is $1. So for this I give 5 stars!! read more

Sept 28, 09. I've only been here three times, and my esthetician was Teri. My fourth appointment is next week and even though I have quite a bit of hair to get rid of, I can already see that much of it has gone. Teri is incredibly professional; she works quickly, she listened to my concerns, and gave me hope that soon I won't be embarrassed about my face. A very important thing: I have had no scarring, no infections, and no scabbing after the sessions on my face. Just redness - and it disappears in a few hours. The place is clean, simple and discreet, and you can't enter it from the street without being buzzed in. It looks like a doctor's office, which is quite reassuring; spa-like places that are too fancy always make me wonder if I'm not being ridiculously overcharged by someone with an interior design hobby. This is not that kind of place. It is reassuringly simple. Most often when I call, I get the voicemail - there is no administrative person and if the estheticians are working, they will get back to me very quickly, because they seem keen on returning all calls within a very short time. Again, I was impressed by Teri's quick follow-up. So far, I'm thrilled with the place, especially since it's less expensive than some of the more frequently reviewed places here o Yelp. I simply trusted that the previous reviewer had a good experience and I went, and I'm happy to give this place (and Teri) a positive review. read more

I started electrolysis a few years ago after some botched laser hair removal on my face which left me with more hair than I even started with! My first electrologist was a strange little lady who had the best intentions. However, her method was not only ineffective, but a total waste of time and money. I decided to look around and I found Esther's Skin Care and Electrolysis. I scheduled my consultation with Teri, who was professional and very knowledgeable. I'll admit, my first treatment seemed to go a little slowly, especially since the first lady who did my face was working so quickly. What I realize now is that the first lady was essentially tweezing the hairs and not killing them. As each hair follicle is treated individually, the current needs to be applied long enough to kill the hair and it will just slide out then. You simply cannot rush this part. After my very first treatment with Teri, I could tell right away that her method was different and more effective. The hairs that she treated did not grow back and create stubble like I was getting before. What she explained to me was that in order for the hair to be permanently destroyed, it needs to be in the active growth cycle. And only so many hairs are in the active growth cycle at one time. So, you might need to treat the same hair a couple of times until you kill it for good. But I was patient and diligent. In the beginning, I would see Teri once a week. Then once every two weeks. Eventually, all of those hairs were gone and they never came back!! I cannot tell you how happy I am that I don't have to tweeze, shave, wax, or bleach any part of my face ever again. I was so pleased with the results on my face, that I started to work on other problem areas. My arms, for instance, are now virtually hair free, as well! This has been the best money I've ever spent. It's given me so much confidence. All of my hair insecurities are GONE! I no longer have to wear long sleeves in the summer. I don't ever have to tweeze random crazy hairs on my chin or upper lip. I'm feeling a little sad that I hardly ever have to go anymore. Teri was always such a sweetheart and I always felt like I was visiting with a friend when I saw her. Let me start by saying my mom was an electrologist so I had a little more insider information than most when I was trying to find an electrologist in Chicago. I've been to 3 electrologists in the city, and Teri is by far the best. She's the only one who really listens to my concerns, is patient and proactively educates me about how best to take care of my skin after treatment. In other words, she seems like she really cares. I am very pale and have very sensitive skin & Teri has been extremely cautious about making sure she doesn't ruin my skin. The others I went to tended to dismiss me when I brought up (valid) concerns and (based on what I knew from my mom & Teri) misinformed me about treatment and skin aftercare. It seemed like their education in electrolysis was somewhat lacking. I go out of my way to go here, even though there are other electrologists closer to where I live. (Also, for those of you preaching about Laser: if you have blonde or red hairs, laser won't work for you. It only works on dark hair.) read more
