I came here with a friend because we heard they do $1 tapas from 5:30-7:30 on weekdays. It was empty when we got there and never filled, and it was a Thursday night. It didn't strike me as a place that people go to much. The place itself is very gorgeous, especially the bar. It's spacious and well decorated. The bartender was very friendly and suggested some drinks that hit the spot. We were more than pleased with his service-- he even showed us the infused spirits they make in-house! I was sold on drinks alone. So why three stars? I was a bit mislead by the $1 tapas offering. Obviously it's not meant to be dinner-- it's a ploy to get me to come and drink and maybe order off the regular menu, and I know that well. But I what we got for $1 was maybe two bites. It was just sad. The fried artichokes were amazing and the chicken empanadas were just like the ones I ate when little, so I would say the food is good. (Not better than Toro, but at least they take reservations!) I did check out the regular menu and it didn't strike me as anything special. If I were to come back, I'd be coming more for the creative (and strong) drinks than for the food itself. read more

Great drink menu and the tapas portions are huge! They are literally the biggest portions of tapas I've ever seen. Between my bf and I, we had the Pulpito a la Parilla Marinated (grilled baby octopus), Setas al Ajillo (mushrooms), Chuletillas de Cordero (lamb chops on garlic cauliflower puree), Ostras Fritas (fried oysters on kale slaw) and Pimientos Shishito (shishito peppers). While we loved everything that we ordered, the surprising stand out of the night was definitely the mushrooms. They were absolutely delicious!! What I ordered the night: Callos (Tripe, trotter chorizo, and morcillo stew) - If you're watching you're waist, don't order this. It's basically one liquified fat stew, due to the trotter really. Decent if you just want to order something "odd", but not that tasty. I wouldn't go for it again. Hamburguesa la Casa - The meat used here is Kobe and it is phenomenal!! Completely dominated the dish, making up for the lack of cheese and generic bread. Gambas al Ajillo - Loved the sauce here. Loaded with garlic and peppers, I was dipping my pan rustica in it, and kept order more bread!! Special of the night - This was grilled cuttlefish, which while plentiful, kind of lacked the spice of traditional Spanish dishes. The food here is good, but it just doesn't stand out. Compared to other tapas places in the Boston area, Estragon is somewhere in the upper echelon. Better than Tapeo, Tasca or Dali, but lower than Toro. As a side note, the decor here is a complete miss. I get they're going for the rustic Spanish charm, but it didn't feel right with the bar setting. read more

Fairly average. I always expect more whenever I come here. It is a decent option if you are in the mood for tapas, but don't want to wait around for the line at Toro. The staff is friendly and accommodating but everything else seems to fall short. It has a neat bar and lounge facade that would have a more inviting atmosphere if it was more filled. The fried food is often more fried exterior than food. Nevertheless, I still enjoy the calamari. The chicken and cheese croquettes are a bit bland. The paella has fresh shrimp and mussels but the only spice that stands out in the rice is salt. The wagyu burger is also on the drier side. The prosciutto and ham and cheeses are the highlight here. Overall, I expect flavors to be bolder or more complex. In general you will find tapas in Boston to be on the more expensive end. Estragon's prices fall in line to others like (Toro, Barcelona, and Coppa). Drinks are on the higher end and options are limited. One plus is that they have Estrella on tap (Barcaelona beer), but it's more a novelty to me than a preferred taste. I recommend sampling some of their happy hour tapas ranging from $1-5. The sister restaurant Las Ventas has better offerings with the majority of the menu filled with spanish bocadilla sandwiches under $10 for lunch. read more

Though I've only been here once, I won't be going back. Ever. I love tapas and I was excited to try a new place, but was disappointed. Granted, I only tried a few things on the menu, but what was bad was BAD. I went with my SO and we ordered spinach with pine nuts and golden raisins. We both LOVE spinach, but this was just plain nasty. It was drowning in oil and something very bitter (we think it was lemon juice). So yeah it pretty much tasted like oily lemon juice... disgusting. We also had the garlic shrimp, which were good, but nothing I would write home about (or couldn't make myself). The bread was mediocre and the sangria was super watered down and full of ice (and very little fruit). For dessert we had what is called "turron", which is sort of a marhmallow-y, airy, nut-based "ice cream." It was good, but they put too much honey on top so it had to be scraped off in order to not be overwhelmed by the honey flavor and sweetness (and I love sweet stuff!). On top of it all, we sat at the bar because we didn't have reservations, even though there were many open tables available and it was early in the evening (before 7). They also weren't letting people sit outside, even though it was warm (I think they were afraid of potential rain, which never happened). Then, 15 minutes after we got there and were chowing down on bread/drinks, we were asked to move down at the bar, so people with a stroller could sit on the end. I usually don't mind accommodating, but it was just annoying to be uprooted in the middle of a meal. In my opinion, Bar Lola is the best overall tapas place (everything I've ever ordered has been delicious and the selection is outstanding), while Toro holds the best dish award - the infamous grilled corn with spanish cheese and lime. Estragon is definitely not as good as Toro as some other reviewers have tried to claim. Yes, the brussel sprouts are great but everything else is just ok. In fact, the patatas bravas are consistently less than ok. Instead of being slightly crispy they are usually slightly raw which is a big no no considering what a standard tapas dish this is. Service is quick and attentive and the place is nice and has a chill vibe. If you can't stand the long wait at Toro then this is a good option but I wouldn't recommend going here if you're strictly jonesing great tapas. read more

I've been to Estragon a few times now, and every time I go, the same two things happen: 1) The food is **awesome**. I always start with a glass or 3 of the sangria, which is delicious good, mostly because it isn't too sweet, like most other restaurants. Items not to be missed: Potatas Bravas, Garlic chicken, fried artichokes, Brussles sprouts with golden raisins, and pretty much whatever they're putting chiorizo in that season. I also really like the chick peas friend with paprika, but I've eaten with people who thought they were dry, so I think it's a taste thing. Basically, I always leave totally jazzed about what i just put in my face :) and 2) I get the same server (of whom I am really not a fan)!!! He's kind of spazzy for a number of reasons and the thing that annoys me is that the other staff seems to just think this is funny, rather than trying to pick up the slack, so I end up waiting forever for little things (drinks, check, etc) when the place is practically empty. That's where Estragon loses stars for me. The food really is great (best Tapas I've had in Boston, including Toro), but the service breakdown and slightly awkward atmosphere keep it from really being a favorite. read more

I like Estragon. I like that its food is reliably tasty. I like that the staff at Estragon, especially the bartenders, are alway nice. I like that it takes reservations (unlike another nearby tapas bar) and that you can almost always get a spot at the bar to eat (unlike another tapas bar). I recently dragged Andi P. to dinner with me and we ordered a selection of tapas that were quite tasty. Sadly, I don't remember much of what I ordered as it was late, I was tired, and I was paying more attention to Andi than to my food ... it happens, especially since she was explaining her approach to doing laundry. Here's what stuck out for me, Estragon was very conscientious about food allergies, checking with the kitchen before putting in an order for anything. Our bartender treated the issue with genuine concern, which was super-nice of her. Oh, I do remember the desserts: I had a trio of house-made ice cream and Andi had the flourless chocolate cake. Also, Estragon's sangria rules. There's street parking available depending on the time of night one gets there and Estragon does happy hour specials, charging $1.00 for certain tapas before 5 (or 6). Estragon - Recently had a company party at this small and quaint tapas bar in Boston's south end. The restaurant was closed for us so I'm reviewing simply on this experience and not as an individual diner. While some tapas were served as tapas the dinner entrees were served buffet-style. The lobster croquettes and tortillas were tasty and were passed as appetizers. The garbanzos fritos were served in bowls with everyone using their hands and I'm not a fan of this method of service, in general. There was also oysters in the shell and fried calamari (I don't care for these items but I heard they were good). The "open" bar was excellent with the bartenders being friendly and fast. Entrees were braised chicken, a whole suckling pig (sorry, I have a pet pig and I just couldn't handle watching the pig's head being hacked off), several paellas which were good but the shrimp was overcooked, various vegetables dishes including superbly prepared brussel sprouts with chorizo (incorrectly spelled in their web menu which is a lack of detail), and a few overly-dressed salads. Dessert was small cakes and Godiva chocolates. The cakes were moist and deliciously filled with flavored creams. The overall experience was quite good with a few misses here and there. It's difficult to serve that much food to a crowd while maintaining the tapas style so what they did serve was mostly done well. The servers were efficient if not overly engaging or friendly. As many diners have commented, the food is good but not out of this world. I believe that three-stars is a fair rating having difficultly awarding four considering the several misses. read more

My friends and I came here for a friend's birthday, and they have something for everyone! The chefs here know what they're doing, and the plate sizes are fairly decent. With two plates, your full! The service was fantastic, keeping the drinks flowing and constantly making sure we were all happy. If you like being adventurous with food, this is a good place to start. They had one of my all time favorite dishes - baby octopus - and they cooked them SO well! A few of my friends are very big foodies and ordered the beef tongue, pork belly, and ox tail - yum yum and even more yum! The pork belly was to die for, while the beef tongue was cooked to perfection - it literally melted in your mouth. Sounds gross right? Not as scary as you would think. The chickpeas and artichoke hearts were the whole tables addiction - even the picky eaters! :-) I have nothing but good things to say about this restaurant, if you love being adventurous and Spanish cuisine - you can't go wrong here!!! read more

This place has $1 tapas from 5:30-7pm M-F. I have had everything on their $1 menu. I have also had everything on their $5 menu which is the pricier bar food like shrimp and kobe beef sliders. The wine they have is excellent. I have yet to try any cocktails but for a sip that I thought was great. Last night was my second time going. The first time I went was with a mixed group of omnivores and vegetarians. Both groups were fine with the amount choices. The bartenders are really nice here. The waitstaff seems pretty friendly (tho I have only sat at the bar). I love the ambiance of this place as well. They do have sports on the television sets (always a bummer) but they don't play it loud and the patrons aren't annoying sporty types for the most part. Several things: Their pork cracklings are amazing. They have this spicy sauce on them. I believe it is the same sauce as they put on the batatas bravas. I don't really adore the kobe beef sliders. They aren't BAD they just aren't special. The beef tongue appetizer is WONDERFUL! Their tortilla espanola is ok... it is served on bread which is a bit odd. The artichokes are really excellent. The drinks are $8-12 which kind of evens out the bill if you have a few drinks and partake of their $1 tapas. read more

On a Saturday night the service was friendly, but they were seriously understaffed so the waiter became more inattentive as the night wore on. Very large beer list- and I recommend the Alhambra, a nice, light Spanish lager. I debated with my companion on whether the food was mediocre or slightly above mediocre- and I deferred to her, since she has lived in Spain. Mediocre- and not one of the top tapas places in Boston. Moroccan lamb was good, but unadorned and quite pricey ($14) for two little skewers. The Spanish tortilla was heavy handed and coarse, but had pretty good flavor. Mussels were tiny (and they forgot the chorizo, which was part of the dish). Broth was a nice wine/butter/tarragon flavored melange, but, did not compensate for the limp mussels. Other dishes were nothing to get excited about except the flourless chocolate cake which was small, but really good. Wonder if the owner, who is from the old country and ran a top notch tapas place with his wife many years ago, is actually around. I would go back for the atmosphere, order a sherry (or another Alhambra) and a few slices of Spanish ham and cheese- and finish off with a cafe con leche. read more

I am such a huge fan of this place! Went here a few weeks ago for the first time, and tried a variety of dishes, including the fried chickpeas, some of the croquetas, garlic chicken, paella. Everything was so, so good! The waitstaff was friendly, and they did a great job of staggering our order so that we were never out of food to try. The cocktails were very original and tasted amazing, the atmosphere was great, and the only thing I wish is that it were closer to where I lived! Will hopefully make it back here soon! read more

My second time there. The first time I was very impressed and that is why perhaps I will go back a third. During this second visit the paella was ok, merely ok. The sangria was really simple very cheap wine no fruits, we left it in the jar. The bread was not fresh. The empanadas were poorly executed. . The chicken with saffron sauce was flat. We went there on a Saturday night with friends from out of town and after the theater - my friend' husband said " I will eat anything with rice" and " it is not too expensive". Those were the compliments. Perhaps the chef was on vacation. Conclusion: only invite friends to good restaurants that offer CONSISTENCY. Estragon is good but not consistent. So glad I finally came to Estragon! Great place for tapas that are delicious, nicely portioned, and reasonably priced. Came here on a Friday night with two girlfriends and we had their crispy artichoke hearts, seared beef tongue on toast, grilled baby lamb chops, seared leeks, fried eggs, and daily flan. We enjoyed all of them thoroughly with sangria, and non-alcoholic pineapple mojito. The beef tongue was a bit tough and the jalapeno slice on top was hazardous (remove this before eating unless you really enjoy spicy food!), but still a good dish. One of my girlfriends had just had dinner so she was only nibbling and the 6 dishes were more than enough for us. The fried egg platter in particular was generously portioned. The atmosphere is cozy and homey, but it can get loud since the dining room is an open room. During parts of our dinner we were using our outdoor voices along with everyone else. Service was attentive and water refills were frequent. I am looking forward to returning and trying more of their menu! read more

came here during restaurant week and I must say I am disappointed. We were seated right away which was nice and the overall atmosphere was very nice. Love the vibe, the furniture of the restaurant. The music and lighting is perfect. The food was not my favorite. I'm fine paying a higher price if the quality is worth it but in this case it wasn't. The pork belly was small and mostly fat, the fried egg was cooked all the way through with no yolk left. The patatas bravas was cold. The Paella was the most disappointing.. small portions with little to no amounts of squid. Save yourself the trip and go Barcelona... better service, food options and drinks options. Definitely one of my favorite tapas places I've been to in the Boston area. The overall restaurant is decorated very well. I could tell that there was a lot of effort put into each decoration. We ordered a lot of the seafood items, and they were all incredible. I would highly recommend the calamari, albondigas and the sardines! We live accross the street and love that such a great restaurant is so close...and it has a great neighborhood feel. So authentic! Amazing food, great staff and fun atmosphere. This is the place to go!!! The food is reasonably priced and everything has been delicious. If you are going for Happy Hour....we love the $1 tapas M-F at the bar. If you are going for dinner you must try the Calamari, Brussel Sprouts, Arugula Goat Cheese Salad and Beef Cheek...they are our favorites. Get out of your comfort zone and try any of the staff suggestions...you won't be disappointed. I really wanted to love this place but just did not. A couple of years ago we stopped by the shop next door, Las Ventas, and had a wonderful experience. We met the owners, former Madrilenos, who were helpful and welcoming and they mentioned the restaurant next door. I just never got around to getting there but fastforward two year and one group-on later and here I was. My dining companion and I ordered 3 different tapas along with the paella mixta. The first was the pan con tomato topped with serrano ham. I last had this dish in Barcelona so perhaps my expectations were too high but they brought out one slice of thin bread with barely any tomato on it and a single slice of ham and they have the nerve to charge charge $7 for it! This was followed by the tortilla espanola. The flavors were really on and the portion was ample for two but it was as if the tortilla was in the fridge and they heated it up in the microwave. The temperature throughout the tortilla was uneven, hot in some parts, chilled in others. At this point someone asked if we wanted bread and they brought over a small paper bag with a small baguette in it the size of my hand meant for sharing which we carefully parcelled out for the two of us. My favorite course was the artisal cheese and perhaps this was because all the chef had to do was slice the cheese and plop it on the plate. They brought four offerings with a couple walnuts, and two fruit pastes. The runner who brought the cheese dropped it and left. Luckily the waiter came back over and explained what we were eating and though the plate did have two manchegos on it, it was a tasty selection overall. Finally we had the paella mixta and not only was this disappointing, it was off-putting. There was absolutely no crunchiness to the bottom of the rice and the dish itself had such a strong smell that I could barely eat it. My partner thought perhaps it was made with shrimp stock and that was what was causing my issue (I am not huge on seafood...I will eat it but it is not my go to entree). I do not think the food had gone bad but I could just not bring myself to eat more than small portion. The four dishes along with two glasses of wine came to $80 without tip. Thank goodness I had a $40 Group-on, otherwise I would have been infuriated to pay so much for so-so fare. Next time, I think I will stick to the sandwiches to go next door at Las Ventas. I won't be giving them a second go any time soon. read more

We had (5): Beef Shank, Pork Belly, Chorizo, Bone Marrow on Toast Arugula Salad, Walnuts, Pomegranate, Seared Spanish Goat Cheese Little Neck Clams, Serrano Ham, Caramelized Onion, Spanish Cider Rolled, Fried Pork Loin, Jamón Serrano,Manchego Cheese Seared Scallops, Saffron-Albariño Cream, Fried Leeks Scallops were our favorite, fried pork was least favorite. My motivation for coming on here to review Estragon is less simply to report that is a great choice (though it certainly is), but rather to appeal to the people NEEDLESSLY WAITING TWO HOURS to eat at Toro around the corner! Now I must divulge that I've never actually eaten at Toro, so obviously I can report nothing of the food or the experience there; I'm sure it's all very nice... However, there is something highly preposterous about there already being a wait of OVER AN HOUR at 6:30 on a TUESDAY NIGHT at Toro, when a short walk away you have this wonderful tapas alternative WITH NO WAIT, a lovely atmosphere, great service, and delicious food! I mean come on! Moving on to the actual Estragon experience... My date and I were greeted warmly and then waited on by Brian, who was extremely nice and helpful. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria, which was delicious. For our tapas, we ordered four items, all of which were not only very flavorful, but also for the most part very generous portions for a tapas restaurant! We had the beef shank etc. on toast; the garlic shrimp; the fried chickpeas; and the roasted brussels sprouts. All delicious! And with the bread that they brought us, we were both full and never needed to order more (though certainly I'd have loved to try the scallops, which sounded excellent). Oh, and perhaps the highlight of all of it -- no, definitely the highlight of all of it -- was a wonderful raspberry bread pudding for dessert, warm and delicious with a perfect texture! So while I'm sure Toro is a fine establishment, for those who are hungry and don't feel like spending four hours to get their meal in, walk over to Estragon and dig in right away -- you'll be highly rewarded for your impatience! :-) read more

After recently traveling to Spain and wanting to introduce my boyfriend to tapas, we came here around 8pm on a Friday night and were seated right away. We split 2 tapas, the patatas bravas and the jamón serrano & manchego cheese plate, and the paella mixta. Left completely satisfied and even with some leftover paella. For me, this brought back great memories of my trip. For my boyfriend, this was a great introduction to new type of cuisine. Cool ambiance and attentive waitstaff at Estragon. I purchased a groupon coupon and was pleasantly surprised at how nice the inside of the business looked and the decor. I stopped by on Saturday and there wasn't a space available and 1 hour wait for a table, so I decided to come back a different day. I returned Tuesday and found only a few people. But the bartender, Laura, was extremely helpful and I had a great time with the other guests sitting at the bar. I asked if they had a pinot noir and Laura stated, "We only carry Spanish wines. The Umo is a good substitute." She gave me a try and it had a nice crisp taste with a perfect finish. I ordered the Duck and the Lamb. When the duck arrived I was surprised to see it upon a bed of green olives. Luckily I like olives and it was one of the most interesting way I have had duck. (4 stars) The lamb arrived right on time, hot and tasty. (4 stars) Overall, I loved the atmosphere, the staff, the food and the pricing. Fun, whimsical space with eclectic decor and perfect lighting. Offers excellent value for the portions, particularly during "Tapas Blitz." Margins are razor-thin in the restaurant industry, so adding value by offering a deal on already reasonably priced food is a blessing. Wonderful and unique flavors, well-executed. Not a tappas fan, but after being dragged kicking and screaming (well, driving and pouting) to Estragon I was floored by the variety of the drink menu and the quality of the food. One of the few places in town that serves an absinthe based cocktail and that thing alone was worth the price of admission.This place changed my view on tappas. A little pricey? Sure, especially if your eyes are bigger than your stomach. This probably isn't a place you want to go nightly. But take a couple friends, order a bunch of dishes (be sure to pick off your friends' plates) and it all works out. I've only been to one other Tapas location in Boston, so I can't honestly say this is the BEST in Boston, but I can't imagine a situation where it's not in the top two or three. Found this place on accident when looking for a new place to try for dinner and drinks with my wife. We were told at the door that they had a lot of reservations that night but we could sit in couch seating if we wanted. We opted for the bar instead which was trendy outfitted in European decor'. The hipster bartender definitely fit the bill, and was friendly and reliable. The drinks are from a mixology school of thought and use lesser know mixers and bitters. The Delta Dawn is a great drink. We went through the menu picking a few tapas from various areas and all were really good. The Serrano ham and Manchego cheese, the Pringa, and Brussel sprouts were the highlights of the meal but everything was great. It is a little pricy but you are in Boston, and the quality of ingredients makes it worth it. My advice is be adventurous when you come here and you will have way more fun. So much food for vegetarians. Went here on a whim with the wife with a groupon now. She's a huge fan of Tapas and after this place I began to go nuts for it too. On the menu for us that night was Roasted Artichoke with aioli, Grilled asparagus, a Potato and egg pie thing and Fried chickpeas. FRIED CHICKPEAS WERE INCREDIBLE! Tried sherry for the first time, where have I been? Clearly living under a rock... I feel like i was eating nothing but glorified "expensive" finger food which frankly was not very good. I'd take most garden varieties of frozen pizza at my neighborhood grocer over anything i ate here and save the 80 bucks i plunked down. Dont come here if you're ravenously hungry as youll feel like you basically downed a bag of Doritoes with no main course to come. We came here for our anniversary because our favorite tapas place closed :-( we were excited by the reviews and thought this would be our new spot. What a disappointment! First, this should have another dollar sign, because it's expensive! Each tapas is like $13. Second, don't think because you're spending that much the food will be good. The portions are smaller than regular tapas and have almost no flavor! The ones that had flavor were very ordinary, not what you go to a tapas place for. I like this place because it is close to me and they offer some good deals ($1 tapas in the bar from 5-7 and wine tasting every once and a while). However, the tapas themselves are nothing special. The sangria is okay, but I've had better. I like the ambiance of the place. It's hip but also comfortable. The servers are very nice. I think it was just a seasonal option and I don't even know what it was because I didn't order it (my friend did) but they had a pumpkin plate that was amazing! I have no idea what to call it but it was basically yummy, gooey pumpkin puree fried just slightly so that it held together as a crispy ball of deliciousness. If they offer it.. GET IT. read more

Cool bar type atmosphere. Definitely not in the best area though. There isn't much parking (all residential) either. The food is good with a wide variety of different tapas. More on the expensive side of the tapas range. Our waiter was pretty rude basically treating us like we were not cool enough to be there. Probably won't be dining again. read more

Came here for my birthday back in February and to be honest given the time passed and the occasion, I really can't remember much but I know I had the Surtido de Pinxtos which are 4 different combinations of food on toast. Chose the Cojonudo (grilled chorizo & fried quail egg), Ensaladilla (Madrid-style potato salad & seared shrimp), Lengua (beef tongue, mustard, & cherry chutney), and Falda de Buey (skirt steak & cabales cream). REALLY GOOD and definitely worth it for $14. Also, had tasted my friend's sautéed shrimp in garlic sauce - delicious as well. Definitely remember the sangria is on point. We had a few pitchers of them. I liked the ambiance and decor of the restaurant. Dim and intimate. Service is kind of slow but I've come to expect that from tapas places but I wish everyone's tapas at least arrived at the same time. Reservation was at 8 but we didn't leave for the bar until 10:30 because we had to wait for one person's cheese plate - yes THAT is the tapa they served last. read more

I really, really wanted to like this place. I lived in Spain several years ago and have long been in search of authentic tapas in Boston. Although Estragon is more authentic than some of the other, more trendy tapas places in Boston, the food falls short. Our experience may have been subpar because it was restaurant week but we didn't order anything extravagant so I'm not convinced. We started with Pan con Tomate which was actually quite good and followed it with tortilla española. The tortilla was mediocre and covered in mayonnaise. We then had Brussels sprouts which were completely mushy and sitting in oil. We had gambas which weren't anything special and patatas bravas that weren't crispy. I'm so disappointed as I was so excited to try this place. Fingers crossed it gets better! read more
