BEWARE! I would use caution before bringing a vehicle here. I brought my classic car in for four specific repairs, and after more than $600 in charges, none of those issues were fixed. Worse, the transmission was in worse condition afterward and is now with another repair shop. The shop admitted they did not test drive the car after the repairs. They also performed additional work, including replacing fuses and the air filter, without my approval. Since the visit, the left headlight now burns out every time it is turned on. I was also charged $390 for a valve service that multiple other shops told me typically costs $200-$250 for this vehicle. In addition, 25 miles were put on my low-mileage classic car during what I was told was a test drive after they "took it home for something they forgot." The car was kept for three days, the requested repairs were not completed, no prices were quoted to me in advance, I was billed for work I had not authorized, and my car is now in worse condition than when I brought it in. My friend referred me to this place and of couse since I trust my friend, I took my car here to get my transmission fixed. BIG MISTAKE!! I ended up paying $2700 for a rebuilt transmission and now a year and a half later, it's shot again! He wouldn't even give me a quote for how much it would cost to order the part and in the middle of explaining my situation, he said "yea, bye." and hung up! I was nothing more than a paying customer with a very expensive fix. 11 days they had my car, had not even touched it or bothered to call me in 11 days. I wanted extra keys for the Volvo, these can only be programmed by a dealer. While I was waiting there, the dealership looked over the car and recommended some 90,000 mile service items along with pricing. The items were the same that European House had told me about in February, but that could wait. European House's bill for the repairs was about half the dealership would have charged. read more

I have relied on European House of Auto Repair to service my cars since 1995. Over the years they have provided reliable service for my BMW 325, Volvo 850, two Volvo XC70's, and an Audi TT Roadster. During this time I also relied on the dealerships from which I purchased my cars to supply factory warranty repair, but I depend on European House for standard service, repairs that are not covered by factory warranty, and sustained service after my factory warranty has expired. European House is interested in building trusted relationships with customers, and they explain service and repair requirements in detail. I appreciate that they don't simplify their language or explanation because I am female. On routine visits they examine your car thoroughly and will give you a heads-up regarding upcoming service needs and can foresee potential problems. They are quite mindful of cost and will let you know if you can defer a repair or maintenance without compromising the safety or performance of the vehicle. Most recently they repaired my Audi TT which sustained substantial undercarriage damage on a Chicago street. These repairs were diagnosed and an estimate was provided from Fletcher Jones Audi. European House was able to repair my car with Audi supplied parts for around 60% of the dealership estimate. It was a huge savings and I completely trusted their work. Cars can be unpredictable and the details of repair are difficult for most people to understand, so finding a reliable mechanic is an arduous task because you never know if you are dealing with someone who just wants to turn a quick profit. I was referred to this place by another shop to fix my 78 VW Bus. While they did fix the problem, I was overcharged. What he told me was the problem I found out was a relatively common problem and an easy fix for anyone that knows VW Buses. It took him 3 days to figure it out. When I questioned him why his labor rates were so high, he's told me he was an expert on air cooled engines therefore he saves me money in the long run because he will fix it faster BS!. Also it ran really bad when I picked it up. He had the nerve to ask me if it ran like that before it stopped running. I told him no. He told me to bring it back if it doesn't start running better. He told me my points and dwell were set wrong, so he set them to spec. I went home, checked my points and dwell. Guess what? They were set wrong. I changed them to spec and she ran like a top. This idiot also thought he could use me for free advertising. He put a licenses plate bracket with the shop's name and number on my car. This guys is the reason why people hate car mechanics. I have done quite a bit of work on cars and knew exactly what I was looking for. When I called these guys, they were the only shop (I only called 4) that seemed competent. I thought they were overpriced but they did an alright job. I had my timing belt replaced and they seemed to have knocked loose one of my heat shields on my exhaust. I had to go to another shop and spend $40 to get it fixed. Summary: I think they are quite competent but their prices are a bit higher than some of the chain store mechanics' prices. read more
