I spent about two days calling mechanics that specialize in Mercedes before I found European Autoworks. The only service I needed was to have a fault code cleared - every other mechanic I called either didn't have the correct diagnostic systems or wanted to charge a full hour's labor for what was a five minute process. When I called, Jo answered the phone. He asked me to explain my problem, and then told me to come in. My problem was fixed less than thirty minutes after that first phone call, and he told me I could pay what I thought was fair. European Autoworks is very clearly an honestly-ran family business, and by taking thirty minutes out of his day to help me, Jo earned a lifelong customer. I saw the reviews here that were negative and needed to speak up. The owners are BMW mechanics trained in Germany, of Middle-Eastern extraction. Here are their stated parameters: They: 1. only use BMW parts, finding OEM parts to be of uneven quality. 2. will be creative about the repairs they do if it saves the customer money. 3. have good judgement about how to stage repairs to not break the bank. 4. repair the car without having to bring it back for rerepair. 5. charge fair prices. 6. will work with you to find a convenient time for the repair. Quality of the work was excellent, but really shady on the pricing. Didn't give a real quote up front, fixed without giving an estimate first (just a call "okay, it's done!" never any call telling me how much it would cost.) Then instead of telling me how much it would cost, just said to bring $2500, and we could bargain from there. (Up front, asked what my budget was, I said $1000.) Unwilling to take accountability or responsibility for mistakes made after a timing belt job and oil top of, the car was returned without oil, took it back because the oil sensor was turning on making noise with oil can picture blinking, and it was that it had no oil, their attention was turned to me and I was told to check my oil at times, WOW really I just got the vehicle back from you guys, they supposedly top of with Motul, but it was blk and I decided to make an oil change, unfortunately, the oil drain plug was stripped in the head and I could not get the Torx socket I have been using since the purchase of the Tiguan in 2016 in and I took it back after calling them and All I got was, (if you stripped it now you need a new 1) I responded (don't say you stripped it please because I didn't strip it during the 5yrs doing the oil changes) at there shop they proceeded to remove the screw by hammering it off and ultimately bending the oil pan around the screw area making it leak,I believed a proffetional shop as such should have the reverse screw removal kit, but nope they don't or didn't care to use, leaving me with an extra task of having to check my engine oil level every other day, Fred the father and 1st person I met has lost 3 customers thanks to his son Modi's work ethics, such his ethic that he sees me recording his business and does not come out to ask whats going on as others did, the video is a recorded review of places to avoid and kudos for those that deserve it, that I will post after speaking to Fred. read more

Fred, who pretends to be from Germany but is clearly not, should only be trusted with minor issues on newer cars that can be dealt with by computer diagnosis. Do not allow him to attempt mechanical automotive work on your German vehicle. He swore he was an expert on Volkswagen engines and mine is a very simple 1990s model with very low mileage & an OBD2 ECU for easy computer diagnosis. For the first time, it was barely flunking DEQ. When I asked if he could adjust it to pass, he said he had an analyzer that would let him dial it in perfectly. But that because he couldn't do everything through the computer he wanted to charge me upfront $250. He would only take cash & would not give me a receipt. I reluctantly agreed because his shop is so close to my house, he had some positive reviews and I have several Volkswagens that occasionally needs some work beyond my abilities. It turns out, he doesn't actually have an exhaust gas analyzer, so that was untrue. His solution was to change the spark plugs, adjust the timing BY EAR and have me take it through DEQ. He said if flunks again, to bring it back so he can keep adjusting the timing until it passes. We tried that three times and he still couldn't get it to pass. He tried to blame my muffler because it's fairly free flowing, but I've made it through DEQ with the same muffler four times, and mufflers are for sound, not emissions. The parts cost was under $20 and he spent less than half an hour between all of the different times he turned the distributor half a degree. In the end, I'm out $250 and he made a huge profit off of four spark plugs that took him 10 minutes to install. I ended up taking the car to my usual shop, Halsey, who put it on their engine gas analyzer (that they actually have) and it made it through DEQ the first time. They even drove it to DEQ, paid for it to be tested, then brought the van back and in total, the cost was $121 including their time to drive it across town and back. That is called honest automotive work & good customer service. If you have a German car that needs work, I do not recommend European Autoworks. Instead try Halsey, A&P, Steve's Imports, Heckman Theiman or Precision motorcar. All very talented & honest. Fred was rude and dishonest at best. read more

Took in my 1990 240 Volvo to Fred and not only did he get her running more than soundly, but he offered an outstanding price along with complete charm and hospitality! After my car running magically for a couple of weeks, alternator died and I called Fred. He was quick to tell me to bring it in without worries about cost or my car being unrepairable! Not even two days later had he replaced and fixed my alternator, etc. He was quick and very communicative with everything he had fixed! By far one of the most reliable and clean shops! I wouldn't trust my car with any other shop around Portland! Will never want to take my car to another place! A must go for anyone with European car needs! read more

So i just made a Yelp account for this post... first of all , i have no idea why anyone would give them less than a 5 star review because my experience was nothing but a 5, i had an estimate at another reputable auto shop that completely took advantage of me and almost installed a generic part, this is a transparent, family owned , completely genuine service shop that got me a quality mercedes part and didn't over charge me for a 4hr job, i also was told by them with one of my vehicles the project wasn't worth it cause it was worth more than the car... when someone else would have said sure!! so the transparency is key here , it's not about money to them it's about providing a quality satisfactory job that keeps you a costumer for life , if i ever have a problem they know that i know i can call on them, they really make you feel comfortable and like family... it's really old school feel and tremendous experience and they know each individual costumer, just a great place and safe place to do business , !! Fred did an amazing job on my 2003 BMW! I had a power steering problem. My cars steering wheel would not turn and it was so difficult. If you need a problem with your car fixed, he's the guy :) Before Fred, I took my car to another mechanic and that guy ripped me off by almost a grand and my car was not fixed at all. It took me 4 trips to that shop. But when I came to European AutoWorks, it was done the first time. So, I came to Fred's shop because a family friend told me he did a great job with any problems. These guys are amazing! The company is a family affair and it shows! You're treated like family, possibly royalty. when you come in and they do everything to make sure you love the experience, even pointing out a good spot for lunch while I waited! I had stopped at Les Schwab to see about getting a wheel bearing replaced and fund that they were going to charge me $360 do to the job (including an $83 alignment). Farid (He goes by Fred) did a wonderful job for me and did all three of the bad wheel bearings for $360 and pointed me to a company across the street that did an alignment for $35! He did all of this in one day and I cannot be happier. Update: I went back again and got a discount on a thermostat replacement on a `98 Jetta, once again it was same day work and I've not had one single problem! They are all really nice and are great to work with! They're my go-to shop now! read more

This is hands down the best euro auto repair spot in SE Portland. I've tried several reputable shops in Portland to no avail and have been searching for an honest and reliable mechanic that I trust on my modified Audi. Fred is a true German, schooled in Germany and definitely knows what's up. Took my car in and had an extremely quick turnaround time and a very decent price even though one of the bolts was stripped and my motor had to be lifted out to remove the stuck bolt. Judgmental, Argumentative, Unperceptive Quick to judge, quick to argue, slow to diagnose. Three visits to Farid with $500 wasted, and problem not repaired or correctly diagnosed. Further, the repairs made were with defective parts which began to fail. Concerns immediately met with Farid yelling about how experienced he is and how the crumbling parts were just fine, followed with him reprimanding me that I did not tell him what was wrong with the car. Isn't it his job to listen and query and then diagnose the cause of a vehicle's issues? Farid will tell you how experienced a mechanic he is and that he lived in Germany, but offers no proof of any formal training or experience nor appears to provide any proof by his actions. If I lived in Canada would that make me a hockey player? Unless you have an infinite supply of time and money I suggest you avoid at all costs. As for myself I refuse to believe a word the man says and will not return to his place of business. read more
