Short version: Over…read morea seven year period, Martin missed one issue, the motor and transmission mounts. That was the only thing he missed in 7 years. He caught the rest, and he didn't break my car. He likes to repair cars. I can't say the rest for the Portland area. I hope the next one can finally finish the oil pan. Still have my Honda though. 125 K and not going anywhere. I've meant to leave this review since I met Martin when he opened his shop outside of his home. He is now on Johnson Creek Blvd. I liked him, because he was polite, to the point, and didn't waste my money. Other mechanics shamed me for use of aftermarket, and he told me that was bs and to save for real repair, of which there are plenty. He was correct. Over the years, I had many things done on my Honda. Beats buying a new car. I love my 1999 Honda Accord DX. He always fixed my car, and he never caused damage. I can't say that for other mechanics in Portland. Unfortunately, the pandemic caused issues for me and for Martin. In October of 2020, I heard this odd noise in the car. He looked it over and did an oil change. Nothing was wrong. He looked again upon request and the lower ball joints were done along with the drive belts. Maintenance stuff. The noise persisted, and he really doesn't like replacing parts, and he's right about not replacing btw. After we talked, and I was sick and very panicked from the virus, he agreed that it could be the shocks/struts and would do that, and the timing belt, which was 11 years old. We sort of lost sight of that, but he did examine it regularly. I never had an issue. I left but didn't want to have the work done there, because I felt like he didn't think it was the issue. I regret that moment of taking it to another place. They didn't hear it either and they damaged my car in a few ways when they did the timing belt, shocks, and struts. Martin ended up fixing their mess. The noise persisted, and he couldn't hear it. I took it to another place, and they found the issue. It was the engine mounts and the transition mount. They installed high-quality, aftermarket, but also, damaged the car. It vibrated like mad, leaked coolant, and accelerator pedal was stuck. I went back to Martin, and he said there was no noise. He had the car a few times for days to try to hear it. He never did. The last time, I came in and he said he would do an inspection. I hadn't realized that meant full paid inspection. Had I known, I wouldn't have done it that day. He found a leak but didn't hear or feel the vibration, which was obvious to me. It was $50 to fix the leak. I said "no." I had been allowed to decide on repairs. I was at a point where I had spent over $3K and it was still shaking. My 22-year-old was not comfortable in the car she had loved. Then, Martin told me I'd have to pay him about $150 (not sure) for the check. I told him that I wasn't going to pay him, and he told me that was fine, that I could pick up the car, and not return. I actually am not judging. I wish I had allowed him to fix the leak and just waited. He would have heard the noise eventually. I think we both had issues at this time. A perfect storm situaion. Perhaps, Hondas of this age sound noisy a lot. I couldn't drive it due to my inner ear issues though. I took it to another place and it has been fixed. OEM Honda mounts and that was the issue from the beginning. I won't add to the story. There is more. I will say that I wish I could go back and just wait until the noise became a little louder. I heard sliding of the engine and the thunk on start up, but I just needed to wait or record it. Hard to do. Martin is a very good mechanic, who doesn't waste your money. I don't know why he missed it this once, but I have known him since about 2013, and he's the only one I can recommend in Portland. That's true even if I am not able to be a client any longer. I don't blame myself, but I wish we could have worked it out. I would have loved to have him fix the car. He has a lot of talent. Just try to communicate clearly and keep track of your maintenance schedule (there are a lot of car types). If he says no, make sure to explain before you go elsewhere and be patient if you aren't scared. I was afraid in my car. The pandemic made it worse. A As far as his work, it is typically 5-star. I wanted to explain why I rated the way I did even when I had issues the last time.

I have followed all service recommendations as I really want to make sure my car is cared for, and I have not regretted it. Recently I went in to get a regular mileage checkup, transmission fluid flush and oil change. Everything went according to plan except the tech forgot to reset the electronic component for the service reminder, so I called them to let them know I was bringing it back in. They apologized for the hassle. During the next 24 hours my license plate light had gone out, so when I went in for the service reminder reset, I asked them to please change out the bulb (I was quoted $27 by the office assistant which I thought was a lot for a single dinky bulb), but the wonderful office manager told the assistant who was helping me to waive that fee being that I had to come back to do the electronic reset which I really appreciated- that is great customer service!! I will continue to bring all my cars here.

They called the next day and said I needed a new fuel pump. But when they installed a new fuel pump, the car still would not start. After more labor, they diagnosed the problem as low compression -a blown engine. They billed me $689 for parts and labor and I paid promptly, though it felt rough. Nearly 700 bucks just to learn my car was dead. But I figured, hey, not their fault. And I wanted to honor our longstanding relationship. I see that a bit differently now, in light of what unfolded next. I found another car to buy, a 2008 Honda Civic, and I drove it to Honest 1 for an inspection on April 14. The inspection cost $175, and the biggest problem they found was a burned out tail light. On the basis of that thumbs-up report, I bought the car. A week or so into driving it, I noticed a disturbing scraping sound, like metal on metal. I ignored it for some days, thinking it couldn't be anything serious since I'd just gotten the car inspected. But it was unsettling, so I took the car back to Honest 1 on May 8 to have them check it out, still figuring it was probably no big deal. Turns out I had no front brakes. What I was hearing WAS metal grinding on metal. Yet their inspection, barely over three weeks earlier, had evaluated my brakes as having 50% of their padding. I felt that since I had bought the car and negotiated the price I paid on the basis of that faulty information, they should fix my brakes for free. The manager on duty confirmed, on the shop computer, that their inspection report had specified 50% of brake padding left. Tony, the owner, was out of town. The manager called Tony, who told him to give me a $50 discount. I thought this was woefully inadequate. I wound up paying $324 for the brake job, which was completed the next day, a Saturday. I went back there on Monday to talk to Tony directly. He would not budge. He had given me a $50 discount and he said he could do no more. He stated emphatically that he would not "give away the store." He stated, "You would have had to get the brakes done anyway." I pointed out that I'd have offered less money for the car, had I not been given bad information by his shop's inspection. He ignored this, and then actually had the nerve to ask me how far I'd driven the car! I said, "Would you like to look at the odometer?" (I'd driven it about 200 miles.) He said, "No, that's not a big deal." I said that at the very least, he should refund me the $175 inspection fee. He responded briskly that of all the many items on the inspection, the guy had "only got one thing wrong" and he certainly would not refund that fee. He actually began yelling somewhat aggressively about it, and then I said, "Tony, why are you yelling at me?" and he calmed down. He finally offered to "cover my next oil change" but I told him that would not be adequate. His shop's mistake had endangered my safety and cost me hundreds of dollars. So, basically, Tony stonewalled me. My relationship with Tony and his shop is over. I have also since done a bit of Web research on the expensive misdiagnosis of my old car. The verdict seems to be that while they likely did not overcharge me for parts and labor, their diagnostic sequencing apparently involved some level of incompetence and it wasn't entirely fair to stick me with that bill either. So-just saying. But the main thing is, after more than ten years of receiving my business, Tony chose to ignore my obviously legitimate point about what his shop's incorrect inspection had cost me. This leaves me very angry. After more than a decade of good business from me, Tony chose not to stand behind his shop's work. Instead, he chose to deny responsibility for what happened, and to discredit my entire perspective. I left feeling a little bit bullied. I find Tony's attitude both professionally and personally unacceptable.

But, I had an independent mechanic conduct a pre-purchase inspection and also purchased a five year extended warranty. The mechanic found no major issues, so I felt comfortable buying it. I made the trip from Chico California to Portland by Amtrak (14 plus hours) so that I could see and drive it for myself. Unfortunately, in the 20-25 minutes it took the Uber driver to go from Amtrak to their office, upon walking into the lot saw a major dent on the driver side door. The salesperson stayed a parking lot attendant had hit the vehicle causing significant damage to the door and panel to the right of the door. I would have had a body shop give an estimate but it was after 5 pm on a Friday (March 24, 2023) by the time I got to the dealership and the salesperson assured me there was no structural damage. There was no reasonable way to stay Friday, Sat and Sunday to get a quote(s) from at least one or two body shops that Monday. The owner indicated it would only cost them $1000 to fix it and they'd ship it to me. Not wanting to trust their work I requested they agree to pay the cost based on at least three quotes in Chico. They said no and settled on only covering me for $2500. I should've known better but was exhausted and didn't want to take a train back. It was exceedingly bad decision to acquiesce and am now stuck with this problem. I got completely ripped off because the damage to the vehicle that they did, supposedly in the 20 minute ride from Amtrak. For all I know is the damage happened days before I left Chico and they knew if I got there after traveling such a long distance I'd be less likely to walk away. Now I'm looking at least spending another $6000 to repair the damage because of structural damage to the driver side door post, having to replace the driver side door with a new down, and damage further down. I would never recommend this company as they clearly knew this vehicle had more substantial damage than what they indicated. Making it more skeevy was the salesperson telling me they would be fixing it in house & would only cost the owner $1000 to make the repairs. In retrospect, it tells me they're either ignorant, incompetent or outright deceptive. Let my crappy decision serve as a warning that you will likely get ripped off. Do not use this company because the salespeople and owner are unscrupulous. If I could give less than a one star I would.
