We fortunately got a chefs table reservation and it was so fun seeing the chefs create their craft. For food, we got the beet salad, sweet potato gnocchi, ricotta cavatelli, and the burger. I waited too long to book reservation so all we could get was "Counter" at 5 PM. We wanted something different so we booked it. It was the best seat in the house. You are literally watching the kitchen and Chef John and Chef Elise. They are a couple that are in charge of the kitchen. Wine selection by the glass is limited and the prices are high. Let me explain. The kitchen is really small. Chef Elise is watching tickets and barking orders and Chef John inspects every plate that leaves the kitchen and adding finishing touches. The flat top is so small. We noticed when they cook steaks they cook for a while and pull it off. We asked what was going on and it was explained they cook for a bit, then let it rest and then cook again until they get to medium rare. I started with the beet salad that was very flavorful. My wife opted for the mushroom salad. It was also very flavorful. For entrees I ordered the snapper and my wife, the burger. The snapper was very good and the burger was excellent. I just wish the fish portion was larger. And the burger without any sides for $25 seems overpriced. Fries are not a thing here as they have one small fryer. What else did I notice? Entrees don't come with anything else. Like a naked piece of fish on a plate. Some potatoes or a vegetable would be nice given the entree price. The menu doesn't appear to include salad greens, potatoes, pasta sans one dish, or rice. They don't offer traditional lettuce salads. And there is no bread service. You can order sourdough with whipped ricotta for $15, but not an option for some bread and butter or oil. It was a good experience, but I didn't leave filling full. She had amazing recommendations and walked us through the menu with so much knowledge and enthusiasm that it made choosing easy and fun. I'd go so far as to ask to sit in his section next time. Everything we had was delicious, even the things we couldn't pronounce or have any idea what was in it. There are vegetarian options on the menu and a few more items can be vegetarianized, so that was a plus. I gambled on the $26 mystery meal, which turned out to be something with chickpeas in a polenta-like creation that tasted very, very good. There is a menu option that is fixed price where the chef chooses the courses or you can order the teams a la carte as you please. The menu does rotate which is exciting but the downside is if you like something theres a strong chance it won't be there the next time you go or theres a new twist on it. It's usually busy so definitely should make a reservation in advance. Despite the reservation we were seated outside, there are some outdoor heated lamps but its still was a little cold (went in Dec so makes sense) but there are blankets at each seat. We ordered the fingerling potatoes - they were good but my mom and sister had had them before and were raving - it was my first time trying them but my mom said they were better the first time she had them, we also ordered a salmon dish which we had over squash I believe but can't recall - the pictured seasoning was also from another pasta dish which was SCRUMPTIOUS and definitely a good pairing with the tender salmon. You're not going to see these loud streamers on YouTube/instagram/facebook/tik tok coming to a place like this. They don't need it nor want it. You would never guess that a gem like this exists from the unassuming appearance from the outside. Chef John Russ has managed to make this a neighborhood style restaurant, upscale dining experience, and just a wonderful date night experience. For those looking to delve into a true fine dining night , we highly recommend coming here. It's true there are no perfect restaurants, some just strive to be. Let's get to what we had. Wait, the service was impeccable! Wow! 10 for the staff! I highly suggest you make a reservation! If you have one, they call you day of to confirm, and they honor your time. They even sat us 15 minute earlier. Ok now back to the food. I've been here before, so I know the menu changes with the seasons. It's not a huge menu, and I even think the wine menu is bigger. We started off with the chopped prime beef and hush puppies. Unlike more expensive fine dining experiences, the portions are actually not bad. I'm going to tell you this, properly executed and seasoned food, will leave you more satisfied than any buffet. The chopped prime beef is high quality beef tartare. The menu does a great job of explaining the dishes to you. The scallion pancakes that come with the chopped beef were a small explosion of flavor that is hard to explain. It exceeds even your wildest expectations. It was the star of the dish, yet the others weren't far behind. Those hush puppies..wow. They tend to lean a bit to the Mediterranean/greek style flavor. Like a way better version of falafel. It was fresh and delicious! We had a red and white wine. Don't want to take up too much space with the names, but they were a perfect compliment to our meal. For our main course we had the Marker Swordfish, and Ricotta Cavatelli. We paired them with the Twice Fried Artichoke. This is one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. This was the smaller of the dishes, but it was the favorite. You can see the well thought out layers of flavor. Every single ingredient compliments the other. It's literally a symphony in your mouth. The salsa matcha was not the spicy sauce we are used too, and this the one time we agree if it was, it would have taken away from the delicious piece of swordfish. The cavatelli was almost as great. If you ever had a fresh pasta dish, made from scratch, then you know there is no comparison to chains. The rustic nature, robust flavors, and aroma of this pasta make you take your time and enjoy the simple yet complex execution. The pecans were a nice touch! Different and it worked! Again no perfect restaurants, we would have loved to have had more sauce for the pasta. Not that it was dry, but after a while it became heavy. We love artichoke, and this is right up there with some of the best. Squeeze the lemon on it. Trust me. Dip it in the sauce. Then we come to the final act of our dinner experience. The dessert! We wanted to order all of them. We decided on just two. We ordered the Lemon Crème Brûlée and the Clementine Crunch Bar. Let's start with Lemon dessert. If I had to say there was a dish that was our least favorite it was this. Not that it was terribly bad. We were expecting a true brûlée experience, and this was not it. It was nice palette cleanser for the next dessert. The Crunch Bar is the type of the dessert you see on competitions on tv or in magazines. It tastes just as great as it looks!
