My wife had had a heart attack this morning and after a log day in the hospital waiting for her to get out of surgery, I needed food. Turns out the hospital cafeteria closes at 2pm. I love middle eastern food! It is nice San Antonio is blessed to have a very nice selection of middle eastern restaurants right here throughout the medical community and medical dr. I had always wanted to try Kahramana, this was the perfect time. The building is built on a hillside, you will find the grill on the backside which is the second level, parking is right there in front of the entrance. I was greeted right away. The menu was so interesting, all my favorites, like Shawarma. Fun fact, for all of you El Pastor lovers out there, you can thank middle eastern food for the dish. After settling in Mexico, people tried Shawarma and ended up replacing the lamb with pork and we all ended up with El Pastor. I ordered the Gyros plate. It came with a green salad, rice, peta bread and a very generous portion of Gyros meat. As I was enjoying my late lunch, the owner came by with a complimentary glass of black tea. You know what goes great with black tea, an order of Baklava! Oh my lunch was so good. I think next time I will have one of their chicken kabobs plates. I got the shawarma plate and really enjoyed it. The interior is much nicer than the outside suggests in this strip mall location. At lunch the place was practically empty so I had a lot of time to chat with the get working there who was very helpful. He even gave me a free hot tea after I checked out, which I think they must do for everyone, but I appreciated it. Only minor con is that they had pretty limited selection of soft drinks available. No fountain drinks, only a very limited selection of bottled/canned drinks including Mexican coke. read more

Absolutely delicious! We were chillin around the medical center area due to appointments and located this place on YELP. It's located in a strip mall, but be sure to drive around to see the main entrance door. Place was spacious with plenty of booth seating. Seat yourself and the one server/cashier will give you a menu, take your order, deliver your food, and take payment at counter. The menu had quite a variety of plates. We ordered: Mix Schawarma plate- shavings of white chicken and beef meat, sprinkled with seasonings. Slightly dry, but the yummy garlic sauce accompaniment made up for it. I wish I could have a large bowl of it lol Along side was rice, slightly bland, I sprinkled a bit of salt, and a fresh salad with a light oil dressing. Decent atmosphere in a small strip mall. We visited for lunch, and the service was ok. We shared the Mixed Shawarma Plate (chicken and beef) for $19. It was a large amount of food (PLENTY for two people), but it only came with one piece of naan/pita. They charged 50 cents for an extra piece. The meat was on the dry side and lacked seasoning. I don't give out fives too often, it's like Dave Portnoy would say, rookie scoring. This was a fantastic meal! I don't even know where to begin. It's clean and vibrant inside. Our waitress was warm and extremely helpful. It was surprising. Let me explain why. I don't know if it's a cultural thing. She was amazing. We started off our meal with some of the best hummus we've had in quite awhile. It was perfectly flavored and had great texture. We also started off with falafel, which we all love, but it was missing just a tad more spices. It was fried to an absolutely wonderful crisp. The pickled veggies that came along were a surprising table hit. They were very good. Then mains, we had the Kahramana Burger, and the Kahramana Mix Kabob plate. Let's start with the burger. It was different. Don't get me wrong, it was good different. It just took a minute to get over the beef patty having the consistency of meat loaf. Once we got over it, it was dam tasty. Good bun to meat ratio and a sauce like I've never had. This place also managed to cook great fries. Two places in a row for us! Makes me wonder what the other places in town are doing wrong? To the star of the star of the show. The mix kabob plate was AMAZING! Best lamb I've ever had anywhere. It was not too gamey, seasoned just right, and they got the medium cook on it spot on! I wish I had ordered just lamb. The beef skewer was also great, but the lamb stole the whole plate. The chicken was our least fav. It was a tad under seasoned and had a somewhat grainy texture. It was falling apart. The rice was good too! It came with a small hummus and this delicious garlic sauce! We were dipping the fries in it! Get this they still bring you all the bread you want! It's hard to explain the bread. It's like a pita/naan hybrid, and we couldn't get enough of it! We stopped our meal early, loaded up our to go boxes, so we could try the baklava. It's wasn't bad, we've had better. Check this out...they bring you complimentary Iraqi tea at the end of your meal? Or maybe it was just for us? Who knows? It's was perfect with the baklava! I came to Kahramana Mediterranean Grill for a late lunch -- in between work meetings meetings, very hungry, and ready for a full Mediterranean platter situation. I hadn't eaten all day, so I was absolutely ready for calories and nutrients. I ended up getting a falafel plate that let me mix and match a few things -- falafel, babaganoush, tzatziki, grape leaves, and an eggplant salad that sounded interesting. I didn't realize the eggplant salad would be served very cold -- like straight-from-the-fridge cold -- which just wasn't my thing. The falafel itself was okay, but not great. It was kind of chewy and brown all the way through instead of that nice warm, soft, and green-on-the-inside falafel you get at really good spots. The dolmas were fine, the tzatziki was a little too creamy for me, but the babaganoush was definitely the standout -- rich, flavorful, maybe a bit heavy on the oil, but I didn't mind it. When the server checked in and asked if something was wrong with the salad, as I had not made a dent in it, I mentioned it was really cold, and he said, "That's how it's supposed to be." Fair enough -- just not my preference. Overall, it was a decent lunch for around $20 including tip. The location is pretty unassuming, and it did the job for a quick midday bite, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come back. read more

Problematic but not against the restaurant (fully) 85% grubhub's fault that I will be reaching out to Yelp about. Before the rant, the food. Delicious. The chicken is cooked fresh over actual coals and it shows in the smokiness and flavor BUT it is on the dry side. The rice is awesome and sides complement the dish. We will definitely come back as it's just down the st. Plenty of seating, cool decor and very clean. The rant. We ordered 2x Chicken Shawarma Sunday night (night prior to Memorial Day) but unfortunately received fries instead of rice with our meal. (We ordered rice) Unfortunately this is where the restaurant failed to disclose this to us and we did not find out until we got home w/ the wrong food. We called grub hub and they would NOT refund us. This is the 85% their fault part. They flat out only tried to refund $5 of the meal. I went back trying to figure out why we got fries instead of rice and the cook/front staff told us that they ran out. They tried to compensate and were very nice/apologized and offered us Baclava but we wanted the proper order so they told us to return on Tuesday. Today is Tuesday and I spoke to the manager Mohammed and he kindly replaced our meal and said to just call directly next time so we will definitely do that instead. Where to start! We looked on yelp and gave this place a try and the ratings did not disappoint. We were greeted with a smiling face and clean restaurant. The food was fantastic. I am a super fan of Mediterranean cuisine and have to say out of the many Mediterranean restaurants I've tried in SA (probably over ten at least), Kahramana simply ranks the best out of all. The restaurant has a hidden kind of location (in the back alley of a small strip mall near the medical center) and was a bit hard for us to find the first time. But a great restaurant would survive beyond the not-so-good location. With their fresh charcoal-grilled meat, flavorful rice, and soft pita bread, I think they have become a favorite of medical workers nearby, plus me :-))) We often come in and go for the mixed kebab plate, which I still think is a steal (a bit over $20), you get everything (a skewer of chicken, a skewer of beef, and tender lamb tenderloin pieces), rice, salad, pita bread, and they are all so delicious. I can see other places charging $30 or more for similar items with worse flavor profile. Plus I always have leftover which is perfect for lunch next day. We came here pretty often now we know this place exists. I travel a lot for work and sometimes I miss the food here and want to have it immediately when I get home, that's how good it is. I found this place by accident and I'm glad I did. I was looking for Beirut but I'm guessing they went out of business because this place was in that spot. I talked to one of the owners and he said they used to be a food truck and this is their first brick and mortar. They were so new to the building in fact, they were still putting up signs and decals. You walk in and seat yourself. There are several tables and booths to sit at. We sat down and decided to get an appetizer, two entrees and drinks. We ordered the hummus first. It was well seasoned and came with piping hot fresh bread! Way better than getting pita chips. I also ordered their mango smoothie that I was told made with real mangos and mango juice. This smoothie was so smooth, creamy, and fresh that it blew me away! They could honestly give Smoothie King and everybody else a run for their money. Next we ordered the falafel wrap, which comes with fries as a side and the chicken shawarma plate. This plate comes with rice, garlic sauce, cucumber salad and pickled vegetables. Both me and my fiancé were thoroughly impressed with how flavorful everything was! The pickled vegetables are something that I could eat as a snack all the time. They had the right amount of spice and heat which was surprisingly pleasant. The falafel was very tasty and the chicken was fresh and tender. Even though this is a new restaurant and they were short-staffed, the service was impeccable and so was the food. With everything, I believe our total came to around $40.00 which is fairly reasonable considering the freshness of the food here. This is definitely one of my new go-to spots for lunch and dinner now. I wish them great luck and success. read more

This may have become my favorite Mediterranean place in the city and that is saying A LOT! I ordered the mixed kabob plate with chicken and beef chunks while also adding their Iraqi special ground beef skewer and it was absolutely phenomenal! Their rice selection is the white rice, but you can ask for their birani rice which is a yellow rice with potato! We also got the falafel appetizer and it was very flavorful! This restaurant is a hidden gem! And I do mean HIDDEN! The way the sign is situated on the front of the building facing Medical Dr. gives the impression that Kahramana should be on that side of the building... maybe even sharing space with the smoke shop. But it's not. You have to turn up Fairhaven street and drive around to the back side of the building, where you'll see a small parking lot. They need better signage, but everything else is AMAZING! We usually have a good experience here but this time we were a bit disappointed. We were told the entree came with white and biryani rice, when we received our dishes there was a small portion of biryani rice. We asked the waitress and she said they're out of the white rice, which we said okay and didn't even ask her to give us something in place of the missing white rice. Instead I asked her to bring another plate of biryani rice, which we would be paying extra for. We waited and waited, it was hard to get her attention. We finished eating our food and the rice was still not here. We asked her to cancel the order, to which she replied she can't. We asked her is the rice being made to order and she said not exactly but if we would've ordered everything at once we'd have it but since we didn't we have to wait and we can't cancel it. And the cook has to put out orders when they come in or he gets confused. That's great but had they put enough rice maybe we wouldn't have to ask for more? It was 20 to 25 minutes after we got our food, and I'm not sure what she wanted us to do with the rice. We said okay but we would really like to cancel it, which she finally agreed to.
