We purchased our first mattress in 1999. We have since purchased 4 additional mattresses to furnish our vacation house and for our daughter's first mattress. We still have our original mattress for 1999 and sleep on it daily. We have experienced no detectable degradation in quality over the last 14 years. This is a testament to the quality and comfort of their mattresses. I have actually taken apart our mattress because the mattress unzips which is the reason you can replace worn out parts instead of throwing the whole mattress away....try that on any other mattress! Our mattress from 1999 shows no detectable wear...no sags in the coils, latex, or cover. We use the separate latex/wool topper pad and have replaced the outer wool layer about every 6 years and are probably due to replace the whole topper in a few more years but this is to be an expected wear item when you spend 8 hours a day on your mattress. Some may think their mattresses are expensive compared to the other cheaper brands. However, we were replacing our "cheaper" mattresses every 4 years. Our "cheaper" mattresses were about 30% cheaper at purchase than the European Sleep Works mattresses but they weren't as comfortable and ended up being much more expensive because we replaced them at least 3 times as often. Our current mattress from 1999 will last us at least 20 years. I recently injured my back and got great advice from Steven (the European Sleep Works sleep guru.) Steven went above the call of duty and was very generous with his time to help me find the best sleeping position for my injured back. I was thrilled to visit the store to find that they still sell a similar mattress to my 1999 model and receive Steven's expert advice applied to my equivalent mattress model. We have recommended European Sleep Works to many family and friends in the past. We always knew their products were excellent, and the service was equally good. However, the expert advice from Steven cements our belief that European Sleep Works deserves the highest ratings. ps...Here's a tip....They are extremely popular and busy on Saturdays. If you can visit on a weekday, you will find it less crowded to try out all their beds. read more

We've had our European Sleepworks bed for almost a year now, and absolutely love it. The people who sold it to us were wonderful. And I was able to come in a few times to test out the beds and find the right one. My hips and shoulders often hurt when sleeping on most beds, so it was great to get an Alpine, with its thick layer of latex, to cushion. We also got a mattress topper to make things more cloudlike. We also really like that the components are natural and don't have any chemical smell. We also got some of their latex pillows, which are the best. And you can ride to their showroom on Bart, which is helpful. The whole experience was positive, and they deserve your business. read more

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this company. We originally purchased an Alpine HDM mattress, slept on it for a while and found it was too soft. So we exchanged it for a Latex HDM. Unfortunately, we found that too firm. Katie was awesome as she worked with us trying to find a mattress somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately, they had nothing that met our needs, so we ended up returning it. But I have to say that all of the people we dealt with in the store and all of the delivery people were wonderful to deal with. Maybe the only negative is that it takes a while to get components (ie foam) - it doesn't seem like they keep a lot in stock. We did a few comfort exchanges, and it took about 3-4 weeks each time for the new piece to come in. I would definitely recommend you try this company. read more

Part One (Purchasing): I did a lot of research and settled on a 100% latex mattress as the kind I need. Have had innerspring in the past, currently sleep on an aging, failing memory foam mattress. Staffer was helpful and attentive. Part Two (Delivery): Delivered when scheduled. Removed old mattress and done in less than half an hour. Mattress is 3 years old now and still like new. After waking up in pain on 4 conventional mattresses over the past 10 years, I decided to check out a mattress made of latex. Part of my big issue is the sag that quickly developed in my mattresses over the years, which were middle to top of the line Sealy's and Serta's. I learned that sag is inherent due to the increasing amount of polyurathane padding being used in beds these days. I checked out European Sleepworks (heard an ad on the radio) and decided to purchase a queen Nordic I bed, in medium firm (don't remember the designation). Service in the store was good, although as I'll explain in a moment, I now realize the saleswoman didn't fully explain the whole adjustable slat platform that they try to sell you with the bed. Delivery was as promised, and the delivery guys were curteous and careful. We've had the bed for 3 1/2 months. The first few weeks, the bed felt good to me, although a little too firm, I had some pressure point problems, but I woke up without any pain in my back. I called ESW, and they explained that the top mattress padding itself was to blame- it needs time to soften up. I put an old polyurathane foam pad on top from our previous bed (I actually did this the 3rd night we had the bed). That helped a lot. Then all of a sudden at about two months, my lower back was hurting every morning- which is unusual, because my back problems are normally neck and middle back. I think the bed was finally starting to "break in". I called the store, and realized a couple of things. First off, I was sleeping near the headboard, which is not where your head is supposed to be- the adjustable slats are futher down in the bed. The first set of adjustable slats is supposed to fall just below the shoulder. I also found out that the slat firmness could be adjusted for the different body points. Voila, once I moved down in the bed and lined up right, I woke up with no pain. However, here is the caveat. For me, in order for the bed to work correctly, I have to sleep in the exact same spot every night, even a couple of inches off, and it causes me pain. I didn't realize any of this when we bought the bed, as the saleswoman didn't explain how one is supposed to sleep with the slat system. After a call, and the store said to try different slat firmness adjustments, I gave up and took matters into my own hands. I decided to set all the slats out to their furthest points, creating the least amount of lift. In a sense, this is just like having a plain wood platform with all areas the same firmness as in a traditional boxpring or slat platform. I have the foam still on the bed- I think the Nordic I could use a little more padding, but the support level for me is perfect. After doing these two things, I've been sleeping well with no pain upon waking. One other thing to be aware about the slat system- because of the dual system of support (for each sleeper), the queen slat system platform has a wood beam section down the very center of the bed, and I'm not sure sleeping right in the middle is a good idea- it would have no give because of the beam, whereas the slats are flexible and allow the mattress to give. Overall assessment: I like that the bed is latex based, and I like the fact that we would have been able to adjust the firmness level during the first 60 days. However, in our case, I don't think the bed broke in until a few weeks after the 60 days. There is no sag whatsoever, where other beds we have had already showed a small amount of sag at 3 months. Had I to do over again, I would not have bought the adjustable slat system support and would have gotten a traditional box spring or other support system- something without a middle beam. I wish I had checked out other natural mattresses before settling with a ESW, but for now, after my own tweaking, I'm relatively happy with the bed. read more

Like almost everyone: 1. Salespeople need some help, not overly friendly 2. Test the bed before you buy 3. There are other companies out there if you do not like ESW Bed replaced - Tempur-Pedic Celebrity (4 years old). nice bed (expensive) but 'drooped', although the 'level-test' TP would do to prove it droops always passes because with no load the foam goes back to original position. A better test is the rate of compression, or height where compression reaches certain limits...but... Bed bought - Alpine Queen (one mattress, split 'B' 'C' softness) with the slat panel Owned 4 years, still a nice bed. It has spread a bit (my side, the softer side, I am a side sleeper). I travel all over, and always love coming home and sleeping on this bed. After 4 years, it has not diminished. My wife feels the same. Anyway, a bed is an emotional purchase, but the engineering and materials used in the ESW bed are worth the money paid. How long it lasts will vary by individual. read more

Have been meaning to write this for a while. After a couple years retrospective, I'm pretty happy with our bed. It just took a few iterations to get it right. In the end I changed mattresses twice and my wife and I have a split bed (the two halves are different firmnesses) and we're pretty keen on our setup. I think the mattress took a while to break in. Seems weird but there it is--they are stiffer to begin with. Plus, to be honest, I bought the most expensive version to start and ended up exchanging for the cheaper option, but ESW doesn't refund the difference. They tell you that up front, so the only person I should be annoyed with is myself! I'd get my next bed at ESW. The staff were helpful and in the end we got a bed that we like better than any other. Four stars instead of five because the price is high. read more

I like the selection of mattresses, bed covers and pillows in the store. Makes shopping easy, all under 1 roof. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. We bought a queen and king size mattress (spring coil), a wool and latex pillow and 2 camel hair bed covers. Me and my boyfriend both love the camel hair cover. Even though it feels heavy when I lift it up, it feels very light when sleeping under it as it does not fall down on me. Great for CA weather, not to warm, not too cold. The woolen pillow is also nice as it can be fluffed up in the drier. The latex pillow was somewhat disappointing as is got very soft after 5 years (bit may this is normal?). After 5 years I found that the queen mattress was getting somehow too soft for me as I often woke up with some pain. I discussed the issue with the store and they sent a team out to evaluate. I needed to replace the box where the mattress was sitting on for a firmer support, but they exchanged the top part of the mattress to a slightly firmer one for free. Love the service. read more

The sales representative was really great and helped us to find the right mattress. So we were happy with the purchase ever since. However, we recently had a piece of the mattress damaged. If you just got a new bed and you aren't dragging all your friends to check out how comfortable it is, you just got the wrong bed. I am crazy in love with this bed! A number of people mention price, and it's true, these beds are not cheap, but why do you want cheap for someplace you (should) spend at least eight hours every day and that you'll have for the next ten plus years?! Do the math, divide it out by3650+ days, and these beds, per useful day, are not expensive. And that's without figuring in the cost of the wine you drink so you can relax enough to get to sleep on some other mattress. I haven't even gotten to the staff yet. The staff are people - regular, non-annoying, never slightly creepy people. You know that feeling that you are sale number 5 that they HAVE to make in order to keep their job this month? Not here. Ever feel pressured to get the store credit? Not here. This company is staffed with real people selling a fine product. This bed will improve your quality of life. Come on, what have you got to lose? Think of what you have to gain. Great quality rest night after night will make you a better person - you'll be able to come up with fabulous solutions for difficult problems at work that will lead to your getting an incrdible promotion with a huge raise. We've have had our Cal King Nordic II for almost 10 years now. We enjoyed it so much we bought a queen for your guest bedroom also. The quality and customer service is excellent. Over the years we have stopped by to have our "slat settings" updated at no cost. Recently we had a concern about my side of the mattress. I'm a big guy and apparently put alot of extra stress on everything. Steven was quick to diagnose and address the issue and now we're very satisfied again. I think I found heaven!!! I am still getting a fantastic night's sleep after 4 years, thanks to the wonderful people at European Sleep Works. To start, I really did my research... I went to big mattress shops like Mancini's and Sleep Train only to find the same mattress, just different firmnesses and different prices. Then I heard an ad for European Sleep Works on the radio that caught my attention, in the middle of the night while up counting the popcorn specs on my ceiling. The ad talked about sleep apnea amongst other things like being "green" with all natural materials. I figured since I eat organically, I might as well investigate sleeping on a product that is non-toxic. So, I decided to take a drive to Berkeley that Saturday and see what is different about their mattresses. I was so pleasantly surprised - actually amazed when trying out the mattresses. What was different about European Sleep Works, is that they fit the bed to you, whereas the big mattress shops talk you into a mattress much like a used car salesman would. The European Sleep Works sales person didn't sell me at all. Instead, he had me try many mattresses that were basically different sleep systems. When he finally decided which mattress would be the best for me, he adjusted the slat suspension to give me extra support where I needed it and less support where I didn't want the pressure. I've been on this mattress for over 4 years now and can't believe how great it feels. In fact, when I go on vacation and stay in a hotel, I can't wait to get back home and sleep on my own European Sleep Works mattress. I'm now spoiled and can't seem to get a good night's sleep anywhere else. Lastly, I was impressed about how heavy this mattress actually is. It weighs a ton!!! It's from the excess amount of coils and all of the latex, which makes it amazingly comfortable and durable. But, who cares how heavy it is. It never needs to be flipped. I'm guessing that I will probably have at least another 5 or 6 year of great sleep on my mattress before needing to even think about buying another one. As a chronic snorer I am always interested in things that could potentially change this very disuptive problem. I went into european sleep works to try their oft advertised Oxygen pillow. Despite the number of customers in the store the salesperson spent a good amount of time assessing my sleep position and finding what promised to be the perfect pillow. Upon getting the pillow home and sleeping on it for 6 nights as it turns out my snoring is not controllable by a pillow. So back to EWS it goes. Upon return to the store and in speaking with another sales person they had absolutely no issues with returning the pillow. The sales person even told me that for back sleepers a pillow will not reduce snoring. He spent a good amount of time showing me some alternatives that could potentially work. After some thought I am headed over to a sleep clinic in the next week to get some medical advice. EWS was not difficult to deal with. I would give them a 5 but the pillow did not work. read more

I LOVE MY BED!!! Walked into European Sleep Works not knowing what type of bed I wanted. I was greeted very warmly by Patricia who spent the next 60 minutes with me helping me figure out which bed was right for my sleeping needs. She was patient, knowledgeable, funny and really took the time to explain the different types of beds and what each had to offer me. When I was having problems decided between 2 types of beds, it was explained to me that if after 30 days you are not satisfied, you can exchanged the coils/inside of the bed to try out a different kind. My new bed was delivered exactly on time by 2 very sweet guys who saw my bed frame and recommended an additional insert to preserve the life of my new mattress. Without a hitch, they built what I needed in their delivery truck, installed it, set up my mattress and were on their way. Can I tell you how well I am sleeping now? Literally, I climb into bed with a smile on my face and wake up with it still there. This bed is the most comfortable thing you could ever imagine! I am so pleased with the quality of service and attention at ESW (thank you, Patricia!) This bed is perfect for me and I do not see myself ever exchanging it! I purchased the most comfortable pillow I've ever owned and am very happy with the money spent.

We drove an hour and a half for an oxygen pillow. They were so busy that first we were asked to put our name on a list for a sales person, which was fine. When the salesperson came to help, within a minute or two she was high-jacked by another customer that she had been helping previously. It took another 5 minutes for her to build up the nerve to say she was helping us, so more waiting, until someone else came to help. She was helpful and I bought a $130 pillow. As I was paying for the pillow I noticed that my elderly, disabled father was standing outside, and I was upset to learn that he had asked to use the bathroom and had been refused. My urge was to return the pillow, but my father didn't want to make a fuss. While I'm happy with the purchase I won't return to the store. read more

Highest Honors for a great experience with European Sleepworks! I recently bought a latex bed from European Sleepworks, and sadly, it didn't work out for me. However, you can really tell the most about a company by how they handle things when it doesn't work out! From the very beginning, with all of the sales staff, especially Patricia, I felt such great care. I went to almost every bed store in the greater Bay Area, and at European Sleepworks, I felt that these were the most fantastic, "rocket scientist" consultants to help me choose a bed, guiding me in determining which firmness provided the best alignment for my spine--something that no other bed company sales reps even asked me about! In spite of the care in choosing my bed, the latex just didn't work out for me. European Sleepworks patiently consulted with me as we considered various options, firmer or softer for this layer or that layer as well as ways to make the mattress work for me, which I really wanted! They are awesome at analyzing and assessing the subtle mechanics of how one sleeps. In the end, after lots of consulting, we had to accept that it just wasn't going to work. European Sleepworks honored their policy of returns in such an elegant way--I am a completely satisfied customer and would recommend them without hesitation to anyone looking for the best quality latex beds!! read more

We had an amazing experience here and purchased a King Alpine "C" and a few pillows. We purchased a Sealy a year ago or so and it's been too stiff. The system at Sleepworks make a ton of sense to us, and the salesperson took the time to fit us to a mattress and find pillows that worked together to straighten us out. Our mattress gets delivered in a couple weeks so we'll have to come back to update a review once we've used it for awhile. read more

This is a completely different mattress shopping experience-no pressure, no gimmicks. If you want it great if you don't that's fine too-this was refreshing after weeks of looking for beds (including 2 mattress returns). It's been 6 months and we love our E.S.W. mattress but it was a wild ride to get there-we tried and returned a sleep number bed but it had no bounce at all then we tried a new age fancy latex, spring, memory foam combo but it felt similar to a water bed when one person moved). ESW makes high end traditional mattresses without all the chemicals. We purchased the mattress and a wooden bed frame from them and a pillow. All three have been a hit. I would start here if you're looking for a mattress but regardless I would make sure that when you buy a mattress you have a window of time to return it for a refund (not just exchange). read more
