We purchased our mattress from European Sleep Works one month ago and absolutely love it! After having had our prior mattress for over 15 years we decided to upgrade to a high quality mattress and have not regretted out decision one bit. The overall experience was great -- good service and a fairly quick delivery. It did take a week or so for the mattress to "wear in". It was a little firm at first but now it is perfect. With my old mattress, I wasn't getting much sleep because of my achy back, due to all of the weight lifting that I do. Furthermore, my arm would also fall asleep when sleeping on my old mattress because there was very little give in the mattress design. After having a horrible night sleep, night after night, I convinced my wife to check out a European Sleep Works mattress. The commercials enticed me, but the knowledgeable sales person sold me. I found out that the sales people are not paid commission. I appreciated not being given the hard "car salesman" sales pitch like I received at a couple of their competitors. The sales person fit the bed to me, not the other way around. I found the price to be very reasonable compared to the other high end mattresses that I checked out. I also do a fair amount of traveling. When I stay at a luxury hotel and lie on those luxury mattresses, I can't help wishing that I was sleeping in my more comfortable European Sleep Works bed. read more

I thought this was going to be an awesome mattress based on friends' recommendations. I give ESW one star because (1) the mattress smells great and (2) the store is willing to take it back for a full refund (minus delivery fees). This product was uncomfortable and it seems there wasn't enough material in the mattress. We tried the Nordic II which was too hard and then did a comfort exchange to the Alpine which was an improvement, but also didn't provide a good night of sleep. It seemed we couldn't get comfortable. We felt pressure on our hips and shoulders and therefore didn't sleep deeply. When moving from our sides to our backs, we'd wake up because the mattress wasn't supporting us well in multiple positions. What a painful ordeal! After the first night on both the Nordic II and Alpine beds I was in so much pain and so tired. I had to sleep on our old bed until we could get another mattress. The ESW mattress was intolerable to me. My husband didn't like it either, but he slept on it until the new bed arrived. There's a "break in" period for these mattresses apparently. We unzipped the mattress, took out the slats, etc. It then felt like a camp bed. When we sat on the edge of the mattress, we would literally slide down the side because there was little support around the edge of the mattress. Like I said before, the mattress smells great! We ended up liking the "natural bed" and went with a bed from The Natural Bed Store in San Rafael. Seems like a superior product to European Sleep Works. read more

European Sleepworks is the worst mattress and the worst customer service experience that I've ever had. The experience was so awful, it's hard to know where to start! The mattress we received felt nothing like the bed in the showroom. Our bed was so painful that every morning, we woke up with our upper bodies' in tremendous pain, like we had just been in a boxing match for eight hours! And this from a mattress that costs about twice as much as a deluxe Sealy or Simmons.... After a few weeks of trying---including adjusting the slat system precisely according to how their Manager told us---we finally gave up and went back to sleeping on our old bed (btw, it should be mentioned that one of the many things that European Sleepworks won't do, unlike pretty much every other mattress store, is take away your old mattress. Of course, in our case, Thank Goodness! ) When we first called to ask about this, the salesperson told us that this happens frequently but that often, after time, the bed will break-in and soften up. This never happened for us. It actually felt worse and worse as time progressed. At this point, we thought to ourselves, "well okay, not every bed works for everyone. Let's try a different model." This is when the situation got really ridiculous. When we bought it, they told us that if our bed didn't work, we could change to another free of charge. First, beware that they don't deliver, the customer needs to pick it up, including any exchanges. Second, their warehouse is only open two days per week---at restricted hours, no less! Third, the moment we started telling them we were having problems, their attitude entirely changed. I'd call them, they'd tell me they needed to look into it, and would call me back. They never once returned my call like they promised. Finally, after being completely exasperated, I realized that we would probably never be able to find a mattress from that worked, partly because of their questionable products, and even more because of their mean-spirited attitude towards anyone having difficulties with their products. Amazingly, after I asked about returning it for a refund, THEN they told me their would be a $200 re-stocking fee! They never mentioned this at the time of purchase. The owner, Kay, told me that they aren't required to tell me verbally, it was in the fine-print of my contract, and it was my responsibility to have read it before buying. However unethical that already is, it get's even better: I checked my contract carefully and there doesn't appear to be any such clause in it! I even asked the woman who originally sold us the bed, Sarah, if she could find this clause (since she was the one who didn't tell us about the supposed re-stocking fee), she admitted that she couldn't find it either! Worse, when I asked the owner to give me at least 60 days to return the item because I lived over 4 hours away, plus I just had a medical procedure that made it difficult to get there quickly, not to mention it's the week before the holidays started she told me that I would have to pay her extra money, plus the re-stocking fee-- for the right to return it within sixty days! She said this despite the fact that in an earlier conversation, her manager Steven had told already told me that I had 90 days! When I pointed out that her manager had said differently, she told me that I didn't have it in writing so I couldn't prove that was true! Bottom line, European Sleepworks is the worst mattress and the worst customer service I've ever experienced for any product, ever. Beware! read more

have an older full size mattress from European Sleep works and its time for it to be replaced. I can give my mattress 4.5 stars from when it was new. It is a firm one and now 15 years old (I am the only one sleeping on it) and I have arthritis in hips and knees so I need a new mattress I have written 3 emails to customer service with questions regarding a new pillow top or other solution and I have and have never received a response. The mattress itself is great, but watch out for the flexible slats! We've had a Nordic II for seven years, and recently we've been uncomfortable, and decided to get a traditional style bed, perhaps a Stearns and Foster that I saw at Costco for about one grand. In a last ditch effort, I placed some plywood on top of the slats on our queen bed. We had a vast improvement in comfort! The design of the slats structure means that each person sinks a bit into a valley on each side of the stable center. This works for some people, but was a terrible thing for us. It turns out my wife and I prefer a flat solid base under the entire surface on the mattress. Euro Sleepworks should make available an alternative design for the base, offer a free swap out, and explain that the flexible slat structure might not be right for all people. read more

The slat system is a waste of money. It did not make my bed more comfortable so I have donated it to a friend and now have the mattress on the floor, which is not ideal since the sides of the mattress are not well formed The slat frame is also incredibly heavy and very difficult to move. Unless you hire movers or have big guys in your life to help, you'll kill your back getting it out of your house should you ever need to move it. I have to say that, overall, this was a bad investment. I'll be looking at PlushBeds the next time I have the luxury of dropping serious cash on a replacement bed. My friend swears by hers and the company has excellent reviews. read more

After two years, our mattress started to sag just a bit but enough to bring back my husbands back pain. I called the store and they sent somebody out to inspect the mattress. Although they found that our slats were spaced too far apart, causing the springs to get pushed through, they immediately replaced the entire inside of the mattress: springs and latex. That was more than I expected and immediately solved our issue. We are obviously taking their advice and are getting better slats now. We couldn't be happier with the product and the service. read more

#1) The female salesperson immediately assumed we were too poor to shop here based on our disheveled appearance (due to flying back from across the country, we thought we'd stop by on our drive home) and she vocalized her opinion. Summary = rude salesperson. #2) More important, my wife had done all this research prior to our arrival here. She was preconvinced that a european style made bed is superior and that the BBB gave this store an A+ rating, so we stuck it out with the rude saleslady despite her continued snobbery. We purchased the individually wrapped coil bed with superior natural fibers on the wood slat base. Upon arrival the delivery people told us they were "alarmed" as they had never delivered a mattress that folded in half like a taco when they carried it with two people. We were alarmed at the site as well. We immediately called European Sleep Works and they assured us this was the way the mattress was constructed and this was normal. We disagreed saying we didn't remember the "floppiness of the mattress" when we were shopping in the store and physically lifting different mattresses. Of course European Sleep Works made us deal with our original salesperson who continued to be rude about it. Eventually we spoke to the manager who was more respectful but again assured us that the mattress flopping in half like a futon or taco was normal. It was comfortable for first two months and rapidly deteriorated. Within 6 months after purchase the mattress spread out like a pancake. Each side was sticking out (or overhanging) the wooden slat base now by 3 inches on all sides. This was due to the fact that individual coils could splay apart because the fabric encasement stretches and only glue holds them together. Basically not much else held it together except the natural fabric cover. We contacted the company once again. They said it was normal for the mattress to "spread" and we and basically got nowhere unless we wanted to spend over $1K to ship the mattress back to them and we were not guaranteed any in-store-credit towards another mattress. We were told, "you'd be lucky to receive 1/2 credit or any fraction of credit toward the purchase of another mattress since the splaying was dramatic after the 30 day deadline" according to the manager. My advice = Make sure before you purchase that the mattress is supposed to be as floppy as they say and I would check out better what prevents the "spreading" of the mattress. Summary = they need a better encasement/support strategy for this mattress that cost us nearly 6K!! I would not recommend the mattress or the rude customer service to anyone. read more

Ordered a bed frame in January. It took a month to come in, when it was finally delivered it smelled very strongly of the finish that was used on it. I could not use the bed for about 2 weeks and had to sleep on a mattress on the floor in the living room. I contacted ESW several times about the smell but they were not very helpful, and were actually quite unsypmathetic. It is now over a month and I can still smell the chemical like smell from the finish. So much for having a sleep not interrupted by chemicals as their slogan says! read more

Edited from 2 to 3 stars for great customer service response. The review is for our mattress. The service was mediocre, but in line with other mattress stores. It's 100% my fault we didn't return it. The first day I slept on it, I literally could not walk my back pain was so severe. I crawled around the house. I called, and they told me it was because I put a mattress pad on the mattress. We took that off. The next day I could walk, but my back still hurt. Here's where I admit to my laziness - it's been 2 years. Every day I wake up with immense lower back pain that slowly recovers throughout the day. I go to bed feeling fine. about 4 hours into sleep, I am awoken by pain so severe I won't sleep the rest of the night. I wake up, heal, and do it all over again. I didn't write this review because I am the idiot who did not ask them to take it back in the warranty period. I am writing this review because others have come forward with similar problems. If you do have lower back issues, this might not be the right solution for you. Definitely not worth the cost for me. read more

Really great customer service! We bought a mattress over 8 years ago. It's been sagging for some time, but translating middle of the night thoughts into action took a while. When I called, they asked me to email photos. The manager (who sold us the mattress all those years ago) called me right away and said he could see there was a problem and that they'd send someone out to inspect it. The inspectors arrived today, on time!, and within 15 minutes they had replaced the part of the mattress they thought was causing the problem. Amazing! So... once upon a time... they called me the Cardinal of Sleep. Why? I was in the business of prividing the best rest possible (European style - and that is something 99.9% of Americans unfortunately have never seen or felt). So it comes with the territory that I was and am UberCritical to anything related to sleep. And if in doubt the Cardinal deemed/deems other bedding systems rather negatively than positive. After all, the Germans and Swiss have the best, most holistic solutions. However, these guys are hands down the best solution I have seen in the US at a price point that makes my lights light up. And, they even shine brightly upon closer inspection. Their providers are of excellent quality (one of whom I know from my good old days in the business). So, go for it. Get your good nights rest here. This is the place. All my friends have their solution (I might have annoyed the staff members when I more or less acted as the sales person and consulted each of my friends when we visited the store). Only little item I might have to mention is ( after all, the Cardinalnof Sleep has to find something to complain about) is the fact that they switched their slatt support system from a German manufacturer to a less flexible (I would call it inferior) system. Still WAY WAY better than anything anybody else has. Sweet dreams! read more

The ability to adjust your bed to a different firmness than your partner's sounds amazing, right? Well, it means that there are two separate box springs -- one under each person. Where they meet in the middle, there is a hard bar running under the whole length of the mattress. That hard bar is wretched to sleep on, so if you like cuddling, you'll be in a world of pain. read more

I decided to give this place a try because I heard good things about them from a friend. I liked that they are a local shop that's not part of a larger chain. The store is actually pretty enjoyable to visit, I tried several different mattresses and even a few pillows. The manager helped me find the perfect mattress for my tastes, comfortable but firm. He explained how the flexible slats can easily adjust the firmness of a mattress anytime you like. I got to see all the layers of coils and foam that go into the mattress as well. Several years later I am still loving my mattress. There's really no substitute for quality engineered mattress. They say you should never worry about spending money on things that keep you off the ground: shoes, tires, and mattresses. I really do believe that if you buy it nice you don't have to buy it twice. Really glad I went with this friendly local shop. The Oxygen pillows are pretty great too... my chronic neck stiffness that I learned to live with is now all but gone. read more

We were in the market for a new bed and based on recommendations from two friends stopped by European Sleep Works on a Saturday morning, the salesperson was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, low-key and not pushy at all. Because I am kind of a Princess and the Pea" type of girl and it was our first exposure to this type of bed we wanted to shop around and do some more research. We went to Mancinis, Sleep Train, Macys and another mattress store in Berkeley and decided European Sleep Works was the best option, we felt they had a superior system and for the quality it was a fair price. We went by again, another salesperson was just as helpful, not pushy, we bought a king-size bed, the slat system, bed legs, pillow top, a mattress pad and we LOVE IT! Also, European Sleep Works gave us a date and a two-hour window for delivery; they arrived on time, with two professional guys who had our old mattress removed and this new one up in a very short time. Every day I wake up and say to my husband, "I love this bed". The only down side is I used to only get 5-6 hours of sleep a night, but with this bed I am sleeping 7, which is good, but now I am scrambling in the morning. Also this bed is good for everything else, soft but just the right amount of firmness :-). Very satisfied with my purchase. read more

Ours was okay for a while, but over time it has become increasingly uncomfortable. I haven't had a good night's sleep -- except when staying in hotels while traveling -- for several years, now. Background: I'm writing this review because I know firsthand how difficult buying a bed can be and wanted to provide anyone in a similar situation that I was in with very detailed information regarding my experience. How I ended up buying a bed from Sleepworks: I purchased a bed from European Sleepworks about a month ago. My wife and I previously slept on a Eastern King Sealy Posturpedic Pillowtop. After 4 years on that bed, it was no longer supportive and caused lower back pain. So we replaced that bed with a mid-tier Simmons Beauty Rest from Sleeptrain, not really realizing that there were other options in the marketplace other than the mainstream beds like Sealy and Simmons. This bed wasn't much better than the Sealy we replaced and wasn't providing the support or comfort that I needed. So we returned that and bought a fairly firm Sealy Posturpedic, thinking that maybe this one will function like our original Sealy did when we first bought it. Wrong again. When this one failed to meet my expectations, I returned it as well. This is when I realized that for people that are looking for a quality bed that is both comfortable and supportive, the process requires a lot of guesswork and is generally a total nightmare. So, not wanting to purchase another bed and then having to go through the hassle of return it and have no bed in the interim, I started doing a ton of research on alternative options for beds. That's when a colleague of mine suggested I check out European Sleepworks. He said that their beds are natural, so there's no risk of breathing in harmful chemicals when you sleep, they're extremely comfortable and you can choose from numerous firmness options and most importantly, that each bed, because of their adjustable slat system, can be customized to perfectly meet your support requirement based on what your particular issue is (e.g. sore lower back) and the way you sleep (e.g. stomach sleeper). My Experience So Far Post Purchase: After thoroughly evaluating all of the many options at Sleepworks and after doing a ton of outside research on the benefits of an all Latex bed vs. a bed with springs, I decided to buy their 8 inch all latex bed and went for the C firmness model and also purchased the slat system to go with the bed. My thinking was that a Latex bed provides great support and the C firmness felt very comfortable as well, so it's the best of both worlds. I also bought into the idea that you could use the adjustable slats to customize the bed to ensure you're getting support in the exact right place. It seemed to make logical sense. My first night on the bed definitely did not meet my expectation. I felt like the slats felt awkward and I didn't feel like the bed was very comfortable in general. So, the next day I called the store and asked for their recommendation on what I could do to solve for this problem. They provided me with a different way to adjust the slats. I did this and for about the next couple of weeks continued adjusting the slats in various ways, but nothing seemed to be an exact fit for me. I either adjusted the slats too much and made the bed extremely comfortable and would wake up with lower back pain, or I would adjust the slats too far in the other direction and couldn't fall asleep due to lack of comfort. I finally went to the store and told them that I was frutrated with the issue and couldn't get it exactly right. They provided me with some additional feedback on how I could adjust the slat differently so that it really provided lower back support, but also would be comfortable. I went home, gave it a shot, and I have to say, the bed was extremely comfortable and I woke up with no backpain whatsoever. It's been 3 weeks now that I figured out the optimal slat setting and the bed continues to be unbelievably comfortable (it softens up over the course of the first month, so give it some time) and I'm getting the exact right support I need at night, so I never wake up with any back pain. In addition, my wife was having neck pain, so based on all of the hype, bought an oxygen pillow from sleepworks. Not only is she sleeping more comfortably, but she hasn't had any neck pain sinch buying the pillow. Another major problem solved! Conclusion: For people that absolutely must have a comfortable bed that also provides support , your options are limited and I believe that any bed you buy is going to be a risk in the sense that you won't truly know if it's the right fit until you've actually slept on it a few nights. It's a very difficult process filled with guesswork and uncertainty. European Sleepworks is the only place I found that was able to a) take the guesswork out of finding the right bed and b) provide a truly unique product that legitimately met my needs. I strongly recommend European Sleepworks for anyone who a) Insists on both comfort and support and b) wants a truly unique option not offered anywhere else. It's an amazing find! read more

We are in love! After having bedded down on our fabulous Nordic II for a month now, we're spoiled for life. Like sleeping on the old proverbial cloud! No more achey backs. Heaven! The best buy we've made in years. As far as ESW service: We spent A LOT of time bouncing on beds, bugging various salespeople, asking a myriad questions over a number of visits. Each of the three salesfolk we dealt with was patient, friendly, funny, and enormously helpful. We're soooo impressed. I can't rate the product because I was unable to even try it in the store. I've been to 7 mattress stores in Berkeley and Emeryville and every time have been greeted within a minute of entering by a salesperson ready to help me. With one exception. The store was busy, but I saw multiple sales people not helping other customers and a few who had obvious breaks while customers were trying a bed when they could have said, at the least, "is someone helping you?" No such luck. No one seemed interested in as much as saying hello to me. I'm not sure what mattress-buying demographic I don't appear to fit, but there is obviously a very specific type of person who gets acceptable service at this store. read more

I am so impressed by the products and the service at ESW. My first thought was they were very expensive, but I was wrong. They are very affordable when you consider all natural, made in the US and custom fitting. I hated having to wait to get our bed but when it finally arrived I realized it was worth the wait. The delivery guys were great. They set it up quickly and were very nice. Unfortunately the bed wasn't as great for my husband so we went back to the store and they told us how to re-adjust to slats on the frame. Now he too sleeps like a baby. I purchased a queen cherry Avalon bed in April 2014 for $1200. The sales experience was friendly, but the bed had some problems - a joint came loose (the dowel joint holding the corner of the bed together). They were unable to fix this due to the bed having a fluke joint defect, but ESW offered a partial refund for the trouble. Given I had owned the bed for two years this was fair. I appreciate ESW's reasonableness and I do think these beds are solidly constructed otherwise and are very good looking; they're also very original and like nothing you will find at Room and Board. read more
