Eleven years ago we bought their bottom of the line mattress system. We liked that mattress - but had purchased a rather firm one. Over the years I developed degenerative arthritis and now need a softer mattress system. So, I went back to ESW because of the satisfaction with the first one purchased. Needless to say, I had a great experience both times. The products have evolved and are even better than when we first purchased there. The sales people have a lot of experience and share their recommendations when asked. I did not find them pushy at all - not 11 years ago and not this week. If you are just looking for a plain mattress, you probably don't need to come here. If you have physical issues or have trouble sleeping, this just might be the place for you. The slats/mattresses are NOT cheap, but I know from experience that they last and I know that they work for me. I only hope I'm alive for another 11 years so I can buy another bed from ESW! read more

I reviewed them in 2007 after I purchased my mattress, and then an update in 2013. Another update 13 years since I bought it and it's still as comfortable as that first day. If I have to replace it, I'll probably only replace the mattress because the slat base is still perfectly fine, unlike a box spring that wears out after awhile (depending on the quality of the springs). It's a bit heavy to turn (no flipping necessary, however) but I only do it twice a year so it's fine. All of their mattresses are made with wool, cotton and real rubber so they don't discolor and disintegrate, and sleep cool and comfortable. I went to work at 4am so I could leave for Berkeley at 8 and get there when the store opened at 10, crossing 8 lanes of 580 truck traffic to get to Shattuck. The service was excellent and there are samples of all the different mattresses and pillows to select just the right combo. The only disappointment was I had to wait SIX! weeks to get it. (I'm not sure if that's still the case or not). I'm happy that we have a store (SC41) in Santa Cruz that sells all the products and will give them a try if I ever have to replace the mattress, but if I have to drive to Berkeley again and risk life and limb on 580, I definitely will. I stand by both of my reviews - killer product, excellent price, amazing service. read more

When we bought our bed seven and a half years ago, my boyfriend (now husband) and I created a written contract about what would happen to the bed if we broke up. At about $2600, it was the most expensive thing either of us had ever bought other than our cars and computers. Both teachers, we didn't really think we were the typical "European Sleep Works" customers. Our initial bed budget had been $400 each, but we never found one we could both agree on until we decided to head into ESW just because we happened to walk by. We bought a Nordic II with the softest option. Even though my now-husband only liked firm mattresses, it was soft but still supportive enough (especially because we got the ribs [slat system] underneath) for him to feel like it wasn't sagging. We bit the bullet and bought it. In the years after, we both swore - and shared with anyone we knew who was trying to buy a new mattress - that it was the best purchase we had ever made in terms of a daily reward for an initial investment. Our bed was the best thing we owned, and since we spend a lot of time in it every day, we felt like it was worth it. Unfortunately, one day I realized that the area right below my hip was indented and didn't feel right. One cool thing about these mattresses is that you can really look inside and see all the inner-parts. The coils from the top layer and the coils from the bottom layer had broken through their cloth casings and gotten tangled together. Our perfect bed! Oh no! We took some pictures and called ESW. They said they had seen thousands of beds and had maybe seen something like that a handful of times. When we came in person, the person who helped us was shocked by our picture. In other words, I don't think this is common at all and I don't think it's evidence you shouldn't buy a mattress there. (These particular sets of coils are no longer made by the company in Germany, either, so you wouldn't end up with them anyway). Instead, the owner we worked with did everything he could to "make it right." He even went to the warehouse trying to find equivalent coils. We were still under the very generous ten-year guarantee. Through a series of different circumstances, we essentially ended up with a slightly better replacement bed than the one we had had before. We are very happy with both the customer service and the bed. We will continue to be lifelong European Sleep Works customers, and will continue to swear it's the best purchase we ever made. read more

After several visits and trying out many mattresses I brought an Alpine mattress in 2003 from ESW. My big mistake was that I got sold a soft mattress and not a firm one. I should have exchanged the mattress within the 30 days warranty. My fault entirely. Although not the warmest people I thought the staff was knowledgeable about the mattresses and so I recommended ESW to my brother and sister. I warned them both about getting a "soft" mattress. My brother purchased a firm alpine queen in 2003 and my sister purchased two firm Nordic II mattresses in 2007. Both are very pleased with their mattresses. When my sister was checking out the mattresses at ESW, however, she mentioned my dissatisfaction with my mattress to the salesperson. Well, the salesperson told my sister that I could get an free euduralator pad (looks like a 1/5" thick felt pad) from ESW and place it between the the layers of coils and latex which will firm up the mattress. Great I thought. Well, to make this already long story short it took me several months to get this pad. Here are some of the excuses cited by several salespeople: 1) my bed frame was at fault 2) sorry, don't have a full size euduralator pad 3) warehouse problems 4) my back aches are due to my age and not the mattress, etc. I think when they realized that I wasn't going away after one visit and four phone calls this salesperson said she would have a queen size pad cut down to fit a full size mattress. When I got to the store to pick up the pad - I was treated very rudely by the same salesperson who spoke to me on the phone. She handed me the pad and turned away without a comment. If you end up with the wrong mattress from ESW then beware the customer service is awful. Would I recommend ESW to my other family members and friends now? NO. Furthermore, in the past five years, more stores in the Bay Area and over the Internet are selling organic mattresses. Just google on 'organic or natural mattresses" and dozens of sites will pop up. Now that I'm more educated about mattresses, I think ESW mattresses are overpriced and their talalay latex are inferior to dunlop latex. From my research most talalay latex are not 100% latex but a synthetic blend (has petroleum oil). I don't know if ESW uses 100% latex or not. Their web site and perennial radio ads don't say 100% latex. Also, much to my surprise, when I moved my ESW mattress I noticed the bottom and sides of the mattress was polyester and not the same material as the top. I don't believe ESW use organic cotton and pure wool either but due to increase of competition they may have started using organic cotton and wool. Finally, if anyone is still reading this really long blog, I brought a VIVETIQUE 100% pure latex mattress encased in a quilted organic cotton and pure wool cover. No innerspring metal, no glue, no petroleum, no polyester, no fire-retardart and other chemicals. I brought the mattress from a green retail store in Oregon although I know about 4 Bay Area stores that sell Vivetique including Earthsake in Berkeley. Vivetique mattresses were featured in a recent Time Magazine article on green products. The mattresses are great and so is their customer service. Their delivery guys were told I would be home at 4:45pm but I got home at 4:20. They have already been waiting for me at least 10 minutes. I was their last delivery. How many deliverymen would have waited on a Friday afternoon knowing that they had to drive back to Los Angeles? They rock! Hint: I sit on my mattress to watch TV, read, write, play with my cats, etc. My back would ached because the mattress was too soft to support my weight in a sitting position. So, do not just test the mattress by laying on it for 15 minutes as recommended. Test the firmness of the mattress by sitting in the center and side of the mattress. See how deep the mattress sinks. If the middle of the mattress indents more than 1-2 inch - I would pass on the mattress unless you know absolutely that you want a softer mattress. It is not until the middle of the night or in the morning do you really know how well you slept on the mattress. You probably don't want a rock hard mattress but the firmest mattress with just alittle "give" for comfort. If, however, the new mattress turns out to be too firm after your first night sleep on it then just add a soft 2" latex topper. The Salesperson may steer you toward the SOFTEST mattress (margin profit is better) first. The chances are better that you will end up with your ideal mattress if you start with FIRMEST mattress first. If you buy an innerspring mattress get one that you could flip. The no-flip innerspring mattress just means no bottom layers of cotton, wool or latex. In effect, you are buying 2/3 of a mattress and will need to replace your mattress sooner. Forget the sewn-in pillowtops. Buy a topper if you need one. Chances are you won't. read more

We purchased a bed here (I think it was the Nordic 2) a couple years ago. We are incredibly happy with the bed itself - we get great sleep, and would get even better sleep if it wasn't for our pesky cat. It's holding up really well, and we regret having to sleep anywhere else (like hotels). I consider ourselves Ikea bed survivors. We ended up here because we knew a few others who are really happy with the beds, and we heard all the stories about how most beds are made with many chemicals that cause cancers and such, and sleeping on those fumes over time... well you get the picture. So we were happy to learn about that, and find this place that doesn't use any of those chemicals. The customer service, as some others have mentioned, was lacking as soon as they had our money. We had a couple issues - it was very VERY difficult to get them to take our existing headboard/frame away - we actually bought a beautiful headboard and frame from them in addition to the entire bed and wooden slat frame thing. So we spent a lot - and they weren't willing to take our frame and were going to charge us for it (we regrettably agreed to pay). Then they screwed up our bill even though we very clearly explained we needed to split our debit card purchases (since debit cards only allow you to take whatever out per day - we were even paying cash). So they messed that up, and because of that they delayed our delivery by a couple weeks. And only let us know why they hadn't arrived on our delivery day after we were waiting for the bed!! So I was super angry about that, plus they said they weren't going to take our headboard after agreeing to it. After some angry calls, they agreed to do that again, but I couldn't get them to bring the bed any sooner. And they didn't apologize once, and seemed like we should just be happy to be getting the bed. I don't get that attitude after we spent thousands... we should be happy to be just getting what we paid for. Sheesh. So they do have a great product, albeit expensive. And they have pretty horrible customer after-care (help in the store pre-purchase was great). But we've been sleeping well for two years, but it needs to be 1.5 off for customer service and .5 off for price - a shame because it's a 5 star bed. read more

oh, I too have several friends who love love love their european sleepworks beds. so I splurged and got one. alas, it didn't work out for me. in the store, I napped like a happy little babe. so comfy. so happy. so I chose my mattess and went home and set up my bedroom with a slatted platform bed, per the store's suggestions. a month later, my bed arrives! but the mattress that was delivered felt softer than the one I tried in the store. usually one has to "break in" a new mattress. not this one. since sleeping on it, I developed a series of brand new backaches and pains. I wanted to love this bed and so tried out a comfort exchange with them to make it work. I went up a firmness but now this one was too hard. I wasn't able to get good back support or find good sleep so I decided to return my bed before my comfort exchange window expired. the staff in the store was friendly when I was there to make my purcahse, but when I called to request the return, the woman on the phone got very angry and told me that the beds were not intended for "people like me." (I have brightly dyed hair, tattoos and wear homemade clothes. most of the other customers in the shop were more clean-cut and are wealthier) yikes. that said, I know three couples who own and love their beds, and they are super environmentally focused in their choice of materials. when I had my bed first delivered, the delivery men broke part of the stair bannister. to make up for this, sleepworks waived the delivery fee when I did my comfort exchange. read more

Okay so I have two reviews for the price of ONE. The Oxygen Pillow - RATES Five Stars! This is an awesome pillow and for $130, it SHOULD be, but I cannot be happier. My husband bought two and his was quickly stolen by our daughter never to be seen again. No way would I foolishly let mine out of my sight! If you're a very special guest, I put in on the guest bed during your stay. Otherwise, you get the average sucky person's pillow. The beds - 2 stars - We bought a ESW bed about 7 years ago and it was the worst night of sleep (other than girlscout camp) I can recall. I was in so much pain the first morning and couldn't wait for the store to open to get it out of my house. The salesperson tried everything he could to get me to keep it and try it for a few weeks and I was adamant that it be taken back. Unfortunately, like others, their "free trial" wasn't clarified that we'd be paying re-stocking and pick-up fees of somewhere around $300 but I was happy to pay this to end the nightmare. I think, like others we bought something too soft, but I swear the one we got felt nothing like the one I laid on in the store. Who knows. Go buy the pillow though! They're great! read more

I am a big fan of their Nordic mattress that I purchased 6 years ago. I used opt have severe lower back pain withy previous Sealy mattress and decided to give this a try. Despite the fact that it was a bit pricey I went ahead and purchased a Cal King as a gift to myself:-) It really made a huge difference and my back pain became a thing of the past ... until recently. I have started to suffer from serious hip pain that worsens through the night and causes me to loose sleep pretty much every night. I am unsure as to what has gone wrong with the bed. I am also not sure if it is covered under warranty ( 6 yrs) so would love to hear if anyone else has had similar experience. read more

Update: I'm very impressed with Steve and the speed with which he tried to remedy my problem. Their crew came today and took away the headboard in question and are working on fixing it. I'll post the final update once my problem is fully resolved. I decided to spend the extra money at this store because of the promise that there is no off-gassing and that everything is more on the natural side. We bought a new mattress and a new bed frame with the headboard. It was all delivered and assembled today and as I'm trying to fall asleep on the new mattress, the smell and off-gassing of whatever they used on that finish of the headboard is so strong that it's giving me a headache and it smells awful. I won't be able to sleep in that bed tonight and god help me trying to straighten this out tomorrow. Maybe I would have been better off getting the mattress and furniture at a regular store for far less money? Why advertise and mislead people that your furniture has low voc and will not introduce chemicals into our bedroom? Completely false. Now I wonder what other false claims there are ... (perhaps about their mattresses??). This sucks so bad. Terrible mistake buying from this store. read more

Very expensive and admittedly comfortable bed system. Store is strong on the sales end but once they get you, there's not so much as a smile or a thank you....and that's after dropping somewhere in the range of $4000-6000. No kidding. And, if you have a problem once you get your system delivered - pray! These people have a serious attitude problem. They are so rude and dismissive that you wish you had never spent one penny in their store. There are many comfortable mattresses and bed systems out there - think McCrosky and Duxiana. I would skip European Sleepworks. They certainly will never get my business again. read more

European Sleep Works is definitely a step up from a "regular" mattress store. After purchasing our first home, the husband and I decided we would finally splurge on a nice mattress. My in-laws have a mattress from here, and they love it. After waiting about 15 minutes for someone to be available to help us, we were shown a number of beds based on our sleep habits and preferences. I honestly thought our sales person was a little bit new, since she kept referring to a cheat sheet hidden in one of the dressers on display, yet she still mixing up the different models and options on the beds we were trying. I see her name in some of the older reviews below, so apparently not. To be honest, we had visited a few other places that offered latex and latex hybrid mattresses prior to coming here, and for the price, we knew we could do better. Even with an extra padded topper (an extra $500, of course), the mattress we might have considered was more expensive and less comfortable than the one that we ended up purchasing, which is of equal quality. read more

The only good thing we can say about European Sleep Works is they sent us to McCroskey in SF (great experience with them!). While ESW were very helpful when they were trying to make a sale, they become very rude when we had trouble with our mattress. When we tried to return it within the warrantee period, they tried to pressure us to keep the mattress. When we politely but clearly refused, they became rude and belligerent. We have never been treated so poorly by any business before. What I've heard is that if you like the mattress, great! But, if you have any concerns or problems, their customer service is TERRIBLE! read more

European Sleep Works still gets my vote! After 8 1/2 years my ESW mattress seemed to be sagging every so slightly. I remembered that the mattress can be unzipped and serviced, components replaced, etc. I looked up my receipt and to my surprise it was still under warranty. I contacted them through their web portal and email to inquire about my warranty. They soon called and asked me to take photos of the mattress to judge it's condition. When I stripped the bed it looked pretty straight and flat. I thought this isn't going to work, but they accepted my claim none the less and sent out a service team promptly. Bruce and Eli could not have been more helpful. They unzipped the mattress and there was no apparent damage or wear. They asked what I was experiencing and I explained that it had performed wonderfully for 8 1/2 years, but now seemed to sag a bit to the middle. No problem they said. They replaced the top latex and flipped the base spring (no charge!). I'm not sure what the base spring is, but that night, I slept peacefully on what felt like a new mattress! I don't think the highly rated bed in a box competitor mattress (named after a pebbly green to black fruit) has serviceable or replaceable components and little to no customer service. I've decided my next mattress will be another ESW product. I highly recommend ESW. read more

ETA: They contacted me and sent a correctly sized replacement base coil, which makes the mattress fit in the bed frame. Hooray! I will edit the review to reflect the updated experience. Beware the made-to-order mattress -- unless you can afford to make a made-to-order bed. We purchased the Alpine Classic full-size bed for our child after an extensive discussion with the very helpful customer service rep (we had considered a more expensive, latex option). We elected to purchase a mattress from them because I inherited one when I lived in the Bay Area a number of years ago, and we like to support small, local businesses. The representative was aware that we were purchasing a platform bed specifically for this mattress. The two stars are solely for the excellent, patient customer service we experienced from Rebecca. Unfortunately, the mattress did not fit properly in a standard platform bedframe. The width of the mattress (at the reinforced corner frame points, which were not flexible) was almost 56 inches, as opposed to the 54 inches listed on the website, and the "53.5" inches listed on the tag. I don't know if the mattress got squished in shipping or what, but we certainly tried to squish it into proper shape, to no avail. The length was slightly more than 76 inches as well, due to the reinforcement, but would fit with no sheets on (which...???). We basically had to try to cram it in the frame every time -- and it's not light. The bed was also softer and less sturdy than expected. A year later, it is sagging one one side, and changing the sheets is an arduous enterprise. I'm not sure if we just got a bum mattress, or if the quality has just gone down in the last decade. We never received a reply from customer service about the mattress size issue (we e-mailed and phoned). So after spending almost $1500 on a non-organic mattress for a now-30-lb kiddo, a year later, we feel like we need a new one -- one that will actually fit in a standard frame. Lastly, the shipping fee was more than what was listed on the website -- it seems a little bizarre that it costs almost $300 to drive to LA as it does to drive it across the country, but I suppose that's how shipping works these days. I would not purchase a mattress from here unless you live locally, so that they can come and replace it if you have some kind of an issue, and unless you have the time to follow up with them if you have an issue. In the past, we've ordered from Lifekind, which is also California-based, about the same price, and certified organic, but like I said, we wanted to support a small, local business. read more

All in all, our experience with ESW is that it is really about hyping its beds and not about their qualiry. My wife and I have been pretty disappointed with the bed we bought a couple of years ago. I would give the ESW one star rather than two, except that its sales reps are OK, our bed is half-decent (though still disappointing) and it's not that (beyond the fancy in-store marketing and its advertising) they deceived us into making a poor choice--that choice was our responsibility. We bought the supposedly firmest top-of-the-line model--I forget the name. While we sleep decently, neither of us find it anything special. I sometimes wake up with minor aches and pains. Our older bed in the guest bedroom is actually better, and cost only a quarter of the price of ESW. We would switch that bed to our room, but our ESW (California King) bed is too big for the guest room. Beyond the fact that the ESW special design system isn't really anything special, it also "features" a barrier between the two halves of the bed so that each person in a couple can adjust the bed to suit his/her own preferences. What this means in practice is that if you like to sleep in the middle, it's less comfortable and perhaps even bad for your backs or hips. So what really is a negative aspect of the configuration is something that ESW markets as a great asset. Hype rather than quality. While the sales staff isn't bad, I didn't find them anything great either in terms of knowledge, friendliness or helpfulness. We could have and should have simply returned the bed soon after purchasing it--so, again, it's our responsibility. While we're not in misery sleeping on this ESW product, We'll certainly get a new replacement bed far sooner than we otherwise would have if we were satisfied with it. Of course, beds are very much subject to personal preference, so I'm not saying ESW is wrong for everybody--only that it's marketing is a big part of its appeal. My advice to folks considering ESW is to carefully compare it with other options/stores, including less expensive ones, to see if you're buying the hype rather than a quality product. And if you do decide to buy it, keep in mind that (unless ESW's policies have changed), you can return the bed within 30 days for a refund (less a return fee). If you find you're disappointed over the first few days or a week don't assume that you'll like it any better over the long haul. read more

We recently purchased a mattress from them. The initial customer service was ok although a bit tepid. But the mattress wasn't comfortable. When we came back to exchange it we we're treated grudgingly and dismissively and told we had to wait a month for the exchange. In the end I was left with a really bad taste in my mouth. On their website the company boasts that it's sales people don't receive commissions. Perhaps if the staff received commissions they would have an incentive to treat customers with a bit more respect. read more

Customer service was amazing. Had a mattress that was still under warranty. Sent a picture of my mattress to ESW asking if the sagging was normal. Customer service responded immediately requesting for additional info, scheduled an appointment to come examine the mattress, determined that it could use a replacement (top mattress), scheduled another appointment to come replace and done. Not exactly sure of the source of the issue, but just happy that service was easy and smooth and more importantly I can rest and get some ZZZs now. :) read more

These mattresses are completely overpriced and overrated, I am exceptionally turned off by the endless sales tactics you encounter from the minute you enter the store. The mattresses are good but absolutely do not warrant the price they are being sold for. I hate being sold something by comparison, it was hard to focus on the mattress itself because all the conversation was geared towards why other brands are terrible, even when I was specifically asking about how I felt when lying in the mattress (I felt like I was falling off the bed if I moved close to the side edge). In the end the mattresses are not such a great deal if you look at the bottom line and there are better options around, probably that's why they are working so hard at selling the hipe. Go to Keetsa instead! read more

I paid $150. for an oxygen pillow and it can not be cleaned?! EVER! Their answer to this is that you need to buy a new pillow every 2 years. For $150.?? I can spend a lot less, get a very good pillow and not have to buy a new one every 2 years - and it can be cleaned!! People sweat, they may even drool, smells sink in. This is unclean and unhygienic and for this kind of money, very uncool. As well, they don't make King sized pillows to fit a King bed. What?! We also spent $3,000. on a complete bedding system on which neither of us has ever been comfortable. It's not too firm, yet there is no give. Backs are arched uncomfortably, bodies don't mold with the bed and we are not sleeping well. Never have since we bought it. We have called and written and nothing happens. They rest on their laurels. They think they are 'all that' and don't help, or honor their products, once you walk out the door after spending thousands of dollars. I gave them one star because they support NPR. read more

I had years of neck pain for which I received physical therapy and other treatments. It eventually affected the strength of the left tricep, which lost muscle tone. The cure: ESW's oxygen pillow. It fixed my neck over a period of about a week, and after several years, my pain has not returned. We have one for everyone in our household. You know how sometimes when you bite into the perfect orange and it just makes your tastebuds *sing*? Our mattress is like that. I think we got our mattress there sometime before April 2007, but I don't remember how long before that. Every so often, I or my SO will comment something like "Ah, so glad we got this mattress." it turned out to be just perfect for both of us. Not the kind of perfect that you don't notice, but the kind where if you're not distracted, you notice how perfectly your body settles into the mattress and rejoice. The Sales person (male, don't remember who unfortunately, as it's been too long) was very helpful in answering our questions, explaining the differences in options, and in telling us how we can look at the curve of each others spines to see if the mattress is too soft (tailbone part of spine curves downward as hips sink too much into mattress) or too hard (tailbone part of spine curves upward as hips don't sink enough into mattress). Then we just tried the various options and were done. He was the right mix of attentive but gave us room to talk and decide between ourselves. Before this, we slept on a crappy futon mattress that had flattened down to practically aluminum foil depth over about a decade's use. Every time I sleep in another bed in a hotel, I like those far less than our bed, even though they are usually high-end mattresses with nice pillowtopper mattresses on top. We got the natural latex and a wool covering. I'm hoping this means we've been breathing in less fireproofing chemical crap, but sadly it's probably severely overshadowed by our TempurPedic pillows. Bonus: no squeaking springs, ahem. This worked out great for us and we will try to duplicate the same mattress from the same place when the time comes to replace our current one. read more

I dreaded having to look for a new mattress so I did all my research online before narrowing it down to 3 places, European Sleep Works was on the top of the list so I went across the bay this morning hoping I could just find the mattress set I liked at the first stop. First of all, you have to feed the meter out front - I think it was around $3/hour. I fed it for 20 minutes, figuring I'd come back out if it looked promising. That wasn't my number one complaint though - the real problem they have is customer service. As a former mystery shopper, I know that in any retail environment the sales people need to greet people when they enter the store so they feel welcome. If they're busy, all they have to do is say something like "Thanks for coming in, one of will be with us shortly, please have a look around in the meantime." No one even smiled or acknowledged me and I was there for around 10 minutes before I walked out. Second problem - the pillow cases on the beds were rumpled and the beds looked slept in. They were so unappealing in appearance that I didn't want to lay down on one. None of the beds were even labeled, so I couldn't tell which was an Alpine and which was a Nordic. There were several sales people helping other customers and a sign up sheet for the next available sales person. One was sitting in the back on the phone despite the customers in the store. If the beds had even looked appealing I might have stuck it out. Good for a compromise bed. Can get 2 different sides. No pressure. Me: Love pillow tops. Want to feel like I'm floating on air - don't even want to feel a bed under neath me. BF: Likes very firm mattresses. Used to very thin futon. Loathes pillowtops. We spent a year looking at every mattress store we could find. Could never agree (came close on a Keetsa mattress). We came to E. Sleep works on 3 occasions. What I liked most is that they were not trying to pressure us to buy anything. They were available for questions if we wanted to talk or they would let us just try all the beds. They are pricey, but the other thing we liked about them was that they were the ONLY store we found where you could get a mattress with two different sides of firm/softness. So you could get one side slightly less firm that the other (for some reason you can't pair the very firm w/ the very soft though). We've had the bed now for about 4 months. The first month (just like they warned us), I HATED it, it was completely uncomfortable. Now I've gotten used to it. I find it just OK. I don't look forward to getting into it or lying around in it like I did with my old bed. My boyfriend loves it and is happy. I occasionally of pine for my old bed- extra soft pillow top Serta/Sealy whatever it was. But it's worth it to have a bed that both of us can sleep in. read more

We have FINALLY found the perfect mattress for us! He's a back sleeper, I'm a side sleeper. We essentially needed two beds in one. We have spent THOUSANDS on mattresses hoping for the solution only to have them be uncomfortable or sag within a year or two. And then have the lovely experience of trying to get the company to live up to the warranty. I will say that these mattresses are not cheap, but there aren't the most expensive out there and they are quality. And I love the efforts they make toward having them be as green as possible. We've had ours for two years now and just bought each of the kids one - and even they are sleeping better! What I love about this system is that is it completely adjustable via the slats. So if your preferences change over time, so can this bed. But my FAVORITE part about this experience is that there isn't the used car salesman treatment. They are very upfront about their prices and they don't really ever have sales. They charge you for delivery because, come on, you are paying for it even when it's "included" or "free". So there really isn't any reason to shop around looking for a deal. If you find the bed comfortable, buy it right away. The staff was really nice and attentive even though the store was SUPER busy. They were even more tolerant of my kids than I was! read more

I went to European Sleep works yesterday hoping for an oxygen pillow. The general manager was the one who helped me , which I would have made sure happened anyway because I had really specific questions and I wanted answers that were definitely the corporate answers of the establishment, and not a trainees best answer. We talked for about 15 minutes, and though this was a minor sale, (140 bucks?) he asked me a series of questions about my sleeping habits trying to determine if the pillow was right for me. He seemed fully committed and focused to determining what would be the right pillow based on the way I slept, and I could tell he was trying as hard as he could. His questions and answers made perfect sense, and after trying a few pillows I learned a few things about the way I sleep on a pillow and I realized this would help me breath easier. I purchased an oxygen pillow , ( and a few sheep pillows for my girl friend to get rid of the down that I have now that I might be allergic to) and I slept great last night! When I woke up I felt like I was breathing better. Based on what I told him, he told me it was an extreme long-shot that I had sleep apnea and last night confirmed he was right. I've read some of the negative reviews of this business, and here is my quick thought. In any business, if you have technical questions that are not mere processing questions, you need to ask a senior level person. If you are wheeling and dealing, or have stock questions, that's another matter. If you ask a really junior person tricky questions and don't like their answers, or think they are "lame" it is you and not the place that deserves a low amount of stars. read more

These people know mattresses! Had shoulder pain turns out my pillows were too soft for me. Bought their medium oxygen pillow and it was great for two weeks but I wore it down fast. They happily switched me out for a more firm medium oxygen pillow and my shoulders are happy again! Beds are Incredibly healing for the back...no hassle, no frills, and yes no sales but worth every penny! If you have pain in your body get their mattresses and pillows. After all you spend 1/4 of your life in bed. read more

The mattress and oxygen pillows my wife and I bought from European Sleep Works have transformed my sleep experience from fitful, sometimes painful (back and shoulder injuries) to deep and relaxing. The sales staff were on top of all of our questions and were extremely helpful. We never felt pressured or taken for granted. The delivery guys were awesome, fast and efficient. Once the bed was set up and we were ready to sleep in it, we discovered a problem with the frame we also purchased. I called the store and the staff was again helpful and polite. Bottom line: we spent good money on a great product and got high quality service, both before and after the sale. This was a couple of years ago and since then we've been raving about this place to anybody who will listen. read more

This is my first yelp review, but I had to write and say do not waste your time here. There were 3 or 4 sales people talking, and we were the only customers and I definitely felt like I was bothering them. One woman did reluctantly show me around and then disappear. I gave them a two and not a one b/c I was with my kids, and they did not seemed bothered by that which was nice. I highly recommend The Natural Mattress in Walnut Creek or San Rafael for a better experience. read more

We got our bed here and love it. I'm not kidding - almost every night I find myself crawling into bed and saying 'Wow, I love this bed!' before getting a great night sleep. I feel even better knowing that the bed was responsibly made. That's what made us consider the store in the first place - we thought we'd check it out, but we didn't really expect to feel a real difference or drop that kind of cash. We got great customer service in the store. They do not work on commission, so it's a completely differnet experience than other stores - all information and no pushy sales pitch. We went a couple of times. We tried all the beds and only liked the last one with the most coils. We melted and sighed with pleasure. That was the bed for us! We bought it, a mattress pad, pillows, and pillow covers. We went home with just the pillows and pillow covers - the beds are made individually, and take a while. I used to wake up sneezing at about 4Am, but no more. Those pillows are treated with oil and the covers can be washed hot over and over. My husband used to wake up with cricks in his neck, no more. The pillows alone are worth a trip. Delivery was easy, and the two men who handled my bed were fast, polite, and tidy. I've never regretted the purchase. If you are thinking about a new bed, you owe it to yourself to see if they have the bed for you. Mine was worth every penny. read more

We sleep wonderfully and we don't make noise when we roll around! However the smell of the latex is a lot to get used to. It filled the room the first few days but now I can only smell it when my head is on the pillow...Getting "natural" bedding but smelling latex, this being what I have an allergy to is very confusing....hopefully the smell will go away. I bought my mattress several years ago and like others, I loved the mattress initially. It was fantastic. But I think we need more reviews on Yelp from people who have slept on the mattress after a few years. For instance, my mattress got the standard sunken middle after about three years, which I think is way too soon, given the price of the mattresses. So, every time I hear their "terrific" radio ads, I think, bleck. And the sales staff were so professional/smooth, although it seems that they really don't know anything except how to describe the various products. So, either they're not trained to address problems, or super-trained on how to discourage customers from presenting problems. It was almost eery. NOTE: I did not buy the slat system to put my mattress on. They knew that and that I was going to use my existing wood platform that had drawers underneath it. So, maybe *that* contributed to the sagging? But if so, why didn't they tell me upfront? Were they so incented to sell-sell-sell that they let me leave with the wrong setup? Anyway, I now sleep on the sides of my mattress, but in a few years, I will decide to buy somewhere else. I do really like that they don't use chemicals--right on--but their radio ads and sales staff are too super-slick, super-corporate for me. read more

I bed-shopped for over a year: Slept on friends' beds, ritzy hotels, bought a Tempurpedic and gave it back. Too hot. Finally, tried ESW and took the plunge. Best bed ever. This was five years ago. Last month the bed suddenly developed a depression around my butt. And I'm a lean guy. So I geared up for Retail Conflict and called ESW expecting a battle. After all, it's been five years. Ben, the salesperson who I bought the bed from was still working there. He had me email a digital photo of the coils to Steve, the manager. An hour later Steve calls and apologizes for the inconvenience - and tells me he's SENDING OVER A NEW MATTRESS. After five years. No discussion. I'm so impressed by their product and support that I would buy another bed here in a second, but I don't think I'm ever going to need one. read more

We recently went back to ESW because we were outfitting our guest room. Our own bed is so great, it didn't seem right to stick guests with a crappy bed. We did go for a less expensive model--the Alpine--and this time no slat system. Wife and I slept in the guest room out of curiosity and to make sure we liked what we picked. It felt great! We got the C firmness and have it on a plain platform. I like our Nordic better, but the Alpine is awesome too. Yeah, maybe we are spoiling our guests, but it's so nice to know that when someone stays over they will be on a really great mattress that is comfy and not toxic! We've been to this store a couple of times before, so we kind of know the drill and could navigate solo. But the sales woman was very friendly and told us to "go for it" and holler if we needed anything. When we had questions, she was there and even gave us some good recommendations. She confirmed the Alpine is a great choice for a guest room. So nice to have a local go-to for all our mattress needs...though hope we aren't buying another anytime soon!
