So we went shopping for mattress this weekend. We visited 4 stores. European sleep works, Keesta (SF), Nest (SF) and Sleep train (SF). Out of all the beds I found the ones at European sleep works to be the most comfortable. I also really liked the sales experience. The show room is nice and peaceful and the sales people are great. We worked with Ben and he was fantastic. Informative, non pushy and just plain nice. I guess these guys don't work on commission which is great. I'm a sales person and I do work on commission, but j sell houses. When you're buying a bed, which is basically a commodity, there shouldn't be any pressure or sales tactics. Here's the product, benefits and cost. A good consumer can decide on their own, I really appreciate being respected in the situation and given the information to make a decision I felt good about. We came to try out the mattresses since they were highly recommended by several friends. While we were trying the mattresses, my wife started getting labor pains. She was picky about the selection because of the pains. We chose one and bought it. 24 hrs later, we were off to the hospital and our son was born. 8 years later we still love our mattress. When we return from vacation, we always comment on how this was one our best investments. It's much better than any other mattress we have been on. It was expensive but sooooo worth it. Since the mattress is modular and you can unzip it, you can wash/dry clean the top or other portions of it if, say, ..... Your son pees in the bed in the middle of the night. We've had to clean it three times. So much better than having to live with the smell of stale piss for years to come. We will get our next mattress from here with no hesitation. read more

I have traveled to many hotels over the last ten years in my line of work and slept on many uncomfortable and comfortable beds as a result. But, when I get home I sleep the best on my European sleep works "Nordic" bed. It's so damn good. Service is very helpful and I don't think they are pushy. The higher end beds are more comfortable. I would give them a 5 but, I am just now replacing my 10 year old sleepworks mattress (yes, it lasted a full ten years) and it's costing me twice what I paid back in 2000. I was hoping it wouldn't have cost that much more but, it's worth it for the best sleep. I know friends that have spent more on a competitor and are not happy two to five years down the road. After 2.5 years we are still enjoying our Nordic II mattress as if it was the first day : ) I also got the high profile slat, the bedding and pillows here. After all we spend 1/3 of every day sleeping (or at least we do). All in all, It has paid for itself several times, every night I look forward to sleep and wake up rested. For all of you who have a companion/mate who has Sleep Apnea and/or who has a horrible snoring problem, and it's preventing you from being able to sleep, in addition to the dogs waking up from the snoring, and you are contstantly thinking, you have to move out of the bedroom, get a divorcie or anything just to able to SLEEP .....you have to get the Oxygen Sleep Pillow.. No if and or's about it. My husband who has had Sleep Apnea for the past 7 years, was using a mask connected to a forced air machine in order to sleep at night. But he still complained in the mornings that he was always tired after he woke up still doesn't dream I did not know that a person has to dream in order to restore the body and get a good nights sleep. However, he heard a radio announcement about European Sleep Works, and how their Oxygen pillow restores sleep. I was skeptical at first but went along with him to the store to check it out. We purchased the Oxygen pillow, Firm #2, for him in which as soon as we got home, he promptly gave away his medical breathing machine It's true! This European pillow, can restore your sleep as well as your relationship with those that are important to you. For him, it is the dogs. The pillow comes in 3 different weight density's, Soft, Medium and Firm, and 3 different heights (0,1, 1.5 and 2) really does work to align the body and improve airflow as they claimed. I recommend you personally go to the store to get measured since pillows for men and women can be different according to the height and density for each of the sexes. My husband is like a new man and I'm like a new HAPPY woman.... happy in the mornings. Woohoo! I finally got to sleep through the night without his snoring waking me. Woohoo! Says the dog. Now, he's not such a grumpy dog, since he got to sleep through the night. Husband says he's started dreaming (and in color) the first night he used the The Oxygen Pillow, which I found out is necessary for the body to restore itself. In fact, we HAVE to take the pillow on any vacation we go on because he can't get a good nights sleep unless he sleeps on the pillow. The pillow is worth the price, in the low $135 range. So, now, I felt like it's my turn to get a pillow for myself. I called the store to inquire about the pillow we had purchased 2 years ago. I was so surprised when the sales person said I probably needed a Soft, #1 instead of my husband's, Firm #2 pillow. He said men have higher and wider shoulders so they need to accomodate the higher pillow, #2, where women need a lower one. Now, who would have thought of that, but it does seem true. I've give you an update once we get my pillow today. I'm so excited. I can hardly wait. Woohoo! Now, I look forward to getting into bed and sleeping on my wonderful pillow. In fact, I have a new problem.... My dachshunds love to sleep on the pillow too during the day.... They get it during the day; I get it at night. What a life.... read more

We bought a king bed and pillows (latex) there last year. The bed is amazingly comfortable and the entire purchasing experience was top notch. They are very knowledgeable, helpful, and easy to work with. In fact, this year I went back to get my kids mattresses and they spent an hour with me helping find an alternative store that met my needs (due to frame size, etc.). I'm especially concerned with health related and supply chain issues and believe me, they know their stuff. I plan on recommending them to everyone I know. read more

I'm very finicky about bedding (among other things), and I don't like there to be any synthetic fabrics in the mix, so European Sleep Works was right up my alley. Historically, I've always purchased online from The Company Store (superior quality!) but my mom recommended ESW when I mentioned that I was on the lookout for a new mattress pad. Amazingly, they carry just what I had in mind- a very soft and cushy wool/cotton blend mattress pad that adds a whole extra layer of padding to my bed, kinda like a detachable pillowtop! Even better, it is reversible, with one warmer side colder climates, and the other cooler side for warm weather. Perfect! I can't speak to their mattresses or any of their other merchandise, but I have been sleeping on the mattress pad for several nights now and feel very confidant about the purchase (a big one at that, about $200)...but if you're a stickler like me for breathable fabrics, or you're just a warm sleeper, this kinda stuff comes highly recommended, in fact, I believe that it can even be fairly life-changing...and god knows that, even in the eco/green/organic-crazed bay area, this kinda stuff can still be pretty hard to find (i.e., not gonna see it at Bed, Bath & Beyond, etc.). The transaction was hassle free and no-nonsense. I saw a lot of other customers walking out with new pillows, so I got the sense that their pillow line might also be quite remarkable. Overall, all I can say is that this place really comes through if you happen to be in the market for a non-synthetic pillow or mattress pad! read more

They keep track of your preferences, check your alignment and ask great questions to help you identify solutions. The mattresses are extremely comfortable and full of the best stuff. No drag down or motion when my hubby or kids crawl in. My back gets the support it needs and I get the luxurious feel I want! Seriously, the comfort is amazing. I don't understand why people talk about the outrageous prices at ESW. $2100 for the almost-top-of-the-line mattress & slat system is much less than you will pay for a decent Beautyrest mattress & box spring at a discounter--and then you are sleeping on gallons of nasty chemicals for a third of your day instead of on organic cotton, wool, and natural latex. 4k to 6k? Only if you buy a bunch of sheets, duvets and a frame (very nice, by the way). Seriously. You'll get a great bed system for just a smidge over 2k, and you can put it on your old metal frame if you so desire. As for customer service, no complaints. I'm guessing if you walk in or call with a nasty, demanding attitude you might not get a lot of sweets in return. That said, if you put your time in and truly decide the bed is comfortable in the store, it will be comfortable at home. If it's not, don't buy it, simple as that. Don't try to convince yourself that you have to buy one just because the neighbors like theirs. In our case, after only one night we were in love with the bed and no longer aching in our shoulders, necks, and lower backs. Buy the bed that is right for you, not because the radio or a yelp-head said so (or not). read more

I just looked at the frightened salespeople and said "Don't worry I will spend money here." We all laid around on the luxurious beds and I eventually realized that I could only afford the cheapest mattress and also that I was in love with the mattress. The salespeople were confused when I asked for a Eastern King Alpine Mattress... helpfully pointing out that I would be quite comfortable on a queen sized (and less expensive) mattress. I explained that I was more interested in my bed having the capacity for lots of people. The fellow I was speaking to blushed but handled this with grace. We then ironed out some details about the firmness and the mattress cover. I have loved this bed ever since! It is awesome and I have never regretted buying this bed for thousands of dollars. I also bought some sheets there - amazing! natural ecological cotton that is way soft!! check these out. also totally worth the $200 price. But you know there was something odd... the fellow that I spoke to mentioned that I needed to buy a mattress cover and also that it was part of the mattress.. that it could be unzipped and washed. Sure enough my mattress came with a zipper but guess what? NOT WASHABLE. 3 years later, still loving the mattress but feeling like it really needed a washing, I did unzip it and managed to totally shrink it. Today I spoke to the sales staff on the phone and came into the store carrying my shrunken mattress part. We deduced that I had misunderstood totally and then the manager (Ben) offered to replace my mattress top (external covering of the mattress itself) for free. free. and since they can't just make the top, I get a whole new case for my mattress and they're delivering them to my house! I call that excellent service ~ no matter how confusing the zip off thing is. Turns out you can dry it but not wet it because it is wool. so... I bought a mattress cover (also super expensive at $200 including tax.) I'm thinking about seeing if they have a duvet cover... read more

Did my research on mattresses and found that latex is the way to go - more natural, more durable, and in a lot of people's opinion, more comfortable. Looked around at other mattress stores, and even other latex mattress stores. Decided on a Sleep Works mattress because: 1) Their materials are top notch. Their latex is from Germany. Their springs are top notch. They know their stuff too - they're very knowledgable about latex and the mattress industry as a whole. 2) Their customer service. There are reviews here from people 5+ years out saying that they not only love their mattress, but in cases where they've needed help with it, Sleep Works has been there for them more than I've ever seen any other mattress business. Their return policy's are solid(90 days minus pick up fees) but flexible (e.g. if you want to return at 100 days they won't mind). They just want to make their customers happy. That's awesome. Comparing other latex mattresses to these guys, the quality of their material really shows. It's springier and more comfortable than other latex mattresses I've tried. Their slat system is also excellent - it lies under the mattress and lets you configure how soft or firm the mattress support is in specific areas of the mattress. You can adjust it to be softer or firmer depending on if you sleep on your side, stomach, or back. That's stellar, and I really prefer their latex mattress with the slats than without. The sales process was no pressure, and they have lots of mattresses to try on-site. I've had my mattress for a few days now and am already a lot happier than I was with my previous mattress. Sleeping more comfortably, waking up more well-rested and with less back pain. Highly recommend checking these guys out and trying their mattresses. read more

I was contacted by Steven after the review posted, and in the past 7-8 weeks, he has worked with me to swap out the top pad. He really went above and beyond to make sure we are now satisfied with the mattress. I think my first satisfying experience when it was still Berkeley Design Shop in the 80's and Steven's all out efforts have impressed me, but I still have sticker shock at the price of mattresses in general (but the mattress stores also have even more expensive mattress sets). I also suggest the staff forward complaints like mine in the first place to Steven to let him assess immediately what he can do to help the customer. read more

I love, love, love, love my European Sleep Works bed. I think my bed is my second favorite possession, coming in a very close second to my Steinway grand piano. And that's saying a lot. You can read all about the mattresses on the website, so I'll just tell you why I love this bed. It gives more support than any mattress I've ever slept on, even high-end brands. By the way, support and firmness are not the same thing, which I didn't understand until I got this bed. I'm generally not picky about where I sleep, except during my two pregnancies, when I was uncomfortable EVERYWHERE except my beloved European Sleep Works bed. It's great from a maintenance point of view, too; you don't ever have to flip or rotate it, and it's a little thinner than most regular mattresses so getting fitted sheets to stretch over the corners is a snap. I've had this bed for five years now, and I love it and find it just as comfortable as I did the day I bought it. It's a little pricey, I admit, but the investment is well worth it in terms of what you get in comfort. I only spent one day at the shop but found it to be a very pleasant experience. The staff is knowledgeable, polite, and friendly, and doesn't pressure you to BUY RIGHT NOW. WIthout a doubt, my European Sleep Works bed has been one of my best purchases ever. read more

Everything about this store was very pleasant, from the somewhat rare offerings of latex hybrid and all-latex mattresses, to the informative, polite, and not at all pushy saleswoman who helped us explore the new world of latex beds. We are very picky about what we purchase and try really hard to to everything in our lives as eco friendly as possible. I was concerned that the mattress would not be much different than other mattresses but there I was wrong! We love, love, love our new mattress and I am so glad that we purchased it at European Sleep Works. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Even though the mattress wasn't a good fit for us, and we ended up returning it, the staff was incredibly helpful and the company has a wonderful return policy. We really liked the mattress in the store, but after a few night's sleep, it just wasn't for us. We were told it would need to break in for at least 30 days. After 30 days, we were encouraged to do what's called a comfort exchange and we did. They were very helpful with the exchange and the delivery staff were polite and professional. After 60 days and trying a few different modifications, including taking away the flex slats and moving the mattress to the floor, we were still uncomfortable. There was no problem when we asked to return it. I wish I could just give 5 stars for how easy they made the return process, but since folks may be looking to the stars for comfort level, I settle on 3. European Sleep Works is a really nice company though. My boyfriend previously had one of their beds for over a decade and loved it. I have back problems. And a crappy bed never helped. Schlepping laptops and kids around can be hard on a girl. I bought one mattress a few years ago that never felt right. I finally convinced my husband make ANOTHER investment in a mattress. A friend told me about European Sleepworks. We went together and the people that worked there were amazing. Super knowledgeable about what would be best for us...they gave us advice and looked at our alignment on different beds. I had always dreamed about mattress and pillow consultants (and my husband always laughed at the thought) - but the girls at ESW are amazing! Our mattress was initially too soft for me, but perfect for my husband. They gave us multiple options for me to change my side and even changed my pillow since it didn't work with my new firmness. I hope to not see them for another 8 years (since that's how long they said my mattress will last) - but when its time - I look forward to going back. Re-posting because Yelp's genius review identifier removed my review for no apparent reason. Very comfy mattress and a great value. Not super expensive when compared against similar high quality mattresses. Last mattress we had was a Simmons Beautyrest with a pillow top. I'll never buy a pillow top again. Once the pillow top wears down the bed feels uncomfortable and you can't get rid of the pillow top. We ended up getting the Nordic 2 in the softest version since we both sleep on our sides quite often (they have the 3 now I guess). Also got the slat system frame (which works great and really affects how the bed feels) as well as the pillow top. Bed is very comfortable without the pillow top just different. Bought the bed about 2 1/2 years ago and it's holding up great. Actually got the whole setup with Oxygen pillows and merino wool comforter. Oxygen pillows are decent but I didn't notice any difference in my breathing. The wool comforter is great. I had a down comforter but was getting allergies. This comforter helps but unless I stop letting the dog on the bed I'll always have a bit of allergies. That's not the comforters fault. Great place to deal with. Bed came in on time, they hauled off our old bed and set up us quick. read more

I've had my Alpine firm mattress with pillow top for about a week and am very pleased. I found the shopping experience to be very comfortable as well as the staff at ESW were super helpful and patient. I made three visits to try out the various choices and to examine the different wooden bed options. I chose their most simple platform bed in cherry and was happy to find that two were available in queen and discounted 20% as the wood grain was considered a little too wild. Amy at ESW arranged to send me photos of the wood in question; I loved the look and ordered the bed. The queen Alpine was also in stock, so my bed, mattress and pillow top were all delivered within a week. I also bought their stretchy mattress pad & followed their instructions to shrink the pad first by washing it in hot water and putting it in the dryer. The new bed is very comfortable and totally quiet. I had protective felt ready for the delivery, and the two delivery men were happy to work with me to be sure that the four legs plus the three middle support legs all had felt applied to the bottom to protect the floor. This also allows the bed to slide more easily if I need to move it. There is room for under-the-bed storage boxes plus I like the fact that air can circulate through the wooden slats under the mattress. I am a happy customer and recommend ESW very highly! read more

What a fantastic buying experience - from start to finish - not to mention that our new Calico (B) HDM mattress and frame are a dream come true for my back & 7.5 month pregnant body. The salespeople were extremely helpful with the process of choosing the best option for our needs and patient with us + our two children. The Berkeley store was quite busy the Saturday we were there, but we received full attention from Carol, the salesperson that worked with us. (Who is very nice and has been at the company for quite some time - so very knowledgeable! I liked her loyalty - it says a lot about the ownership & company environment.) The delivery team of Edgar and George were extremely professional - called ahead of showing up in their assigned delivery window, didn't damage anything taking out our old CA King mattress or bringing in our new Eastern King Calico. We ended up buying a new bed frame with the integrated slat system since we switched from CK to EK and are very impressed with the quality of craftsmanship, build and design. Overall - my husband and I HIGHLY recommend ESW. The Calico is their highest end model - but very reasonably priced when comparing it to other high-end big box mattress systems. Plus, they are locally owned and manufacture locally in the Bay Area! read more

My wife and I went mattress shopping today. We went to four stores: ESW, Essentia, ergo, and Foam Creations in Albany. While ergo was a close second, European Sleep Works won the day. Our salesman Ben was really good. He was low key, didn't try to talk us into anything, just explained the options, and encouraged us to try different things. We chose the latex classic, which we split between two hardnesses. Selection really set this store apart. They have 5 or 6 different constructions and the showroom lets you try them all in 4 different hardnesses. Ergo has a comparable selection, but the others aren't even close. Everything from straight foam (what we got) to multiple layers of springs. Also pillows, sheets and blankets. All organic. The salespeople were outstanding as well. Ben took us through everything but when we came back to make the actual purchase he wasn't available. A young woman who's name escapes me wrote up the sale. She clearly was also also had deep knowledge of the products and answered our questions about ancillary products easily and thoroughly. The attitude in the store seems to be that if we know about the product it will sell itself. The base (instead of a box spring) is pricey ($500 for Queen size), I'll find out if it was worth it. Delivery takes 4 weeks and costs $75, including pick-up of the old one. Total price for Latex Classic, base, delivery, and tax was $2418. This is comparable to the best deal I found on line, and I got to try the mattress first and had the pleasure of great salespeople. read more

I bought a bed here over 10 years ago. It was a complete waste of my money. I had been recommend a softer mattress based off of their experience and it was an ordeal after that. I tried to replace it for a former mattress and that wasn't working either. The previous owner was sympathetic and kind, but then it got taken over by the current manager and he was completely unsympathetic to the point of me being in tears. Luckily for me at the time, the previous owner was willing to work with me directly. He was great. For years I had that bed that hurt my back, never got any better no matter what I did. I think that that slat system wasn't for me. Try moving that bed too. Ugh. I had a really really bad experience with this store and am still upset about it upon reflection. Tthe bed still sits in the guest room. I'm now going to try and get rid of it and do the best I can to explain it. I'm glad this mattress place works for so many others. I just had a very different experience. To me it wasn't worth the money. I bought a mattress from a local company from here and never had any problems with it. Glad that others have found it to be worth the money, though I do see some reviews that had similar experiences to my own. It's a mute point now though. read more

I have purchased 6 of these beds over the years and could not be happier. Great support, supreme comfort, with a system that is really flexible for changes you would like to make to customize your bed. Additionally the mattress of a queen can be moved in a small car by disassembling it, and easy to put back together. I am just about to purchase my 7th bed for my boyfriends house, boy is he gonna be surprised. Great company, great people. read more

I bought a Nordic II mattress and could not be more pleased. My previous mattress was a temper pedic Rhapsody. The Nordic mattress has better overall support yet doesn't feel to firm at all. Just the right amount of squish. The staff have all been great. Steven (spelling?) is the best and is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I went in to buy a mattress but ended up buying a complete bedroom set as their furniture is awesome and excellent quality. read more

We recently replaced our 10 year old bed, also from ESW. We'll spruce it up a little (new foam, cleaning), but for a small amount of money it'll make a great guest bed. This made more sense to us than buying a new guest bed. We tried the other large name, in SF, and though those are great mattresses, we like the design of the ESW better. The upgraded Alpine (HDM) vs the Classic, feels more like a conventional spring mattress (it's a little more firm) but with the added design of ESW. We like it a lot! These beds are great for couples, because movement between partners is dampened as part of the design (un-like conventional spring mattresses). The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable.
