I tried some of the fried pickles which were yummy but ran about $1/pickle slice.. there were only 7 slices. However, the ravigote sauce accompanied with the pickles was delicious. I ordered the steak frites for my main course. I hate to say it, but the whole meal tasted average. If I were blindfolded, I would not be able to tell the difference between this prime steak and a chain restaurants. The steak sauce resembled ketchup and I felt that any good steak doesn't really need a sauce in the first place. The fries were also just average, but served in a cute little dish. Service was excellent and my party was well taken care of. Overall though, an expensive night for just average food. The food was superb! The lamb shank literally melts in your mouth. But above all, the service was excellent. Greeted warmly at the check in counter, the servers and the food were fast and efficient. From the outside you'd think it's a small place that's right but the outside dining with its heated lamps was superb and comfortable. We had our son and his fiancé's rehearsal dinner at Evangeline on Friday night. Serving 66 people isn't an easy feat, yet Sasan and his crew did an amazing job. The drinks and food were fabulous. The service was great and we couldn't be more happy. From the first time we visited Evangeline to the day of the dinner, the owner, Sasan, was generous with his time and insight. He suggested things to do to make the event a bit more special and told us exactly how things would flow the night of the dinner. I could not recommend it more for a meal or for an event. We visited Evangeline last week for my mother's birthday and it was a Friday evening, with only a few people. We ordered our food and we were so excited. The food was not good. I ordered the scallops and almost choked and the squid past, eww. My mom ordered the salmon and it was on the dry side. My husband ordered the steak and it was good well. The desserts were awful, except for the ice cream. My husband always samples everyone's food. I didn't say anything nor my husband because the day already started crapy with our hotel and we wanted a pleasant dinner with my mom. BTW, my husband got sick as soon as we headed home. I called the owner to let him know about our experience and I thought it was far that he reimbursed me. The bill was $284! I would have approached a worker but when we got our desserts the staff was cleaning up around us and some were drinking at the bar. Plus, my husband and my mom needed to use the restroom badly. I told the manager you can reimburse me half and keep half because I understand you have to pay your employees and I wanted to take my mom out for her birthday to make up for the poor dinner. We also left a 22% tip. He has yet to contact me. I doubt you need to speak to the chef regarding my refund. I hope the restaurant makes changes to their menu because the pairing of the food is not good. read more

Came here (PRECOVID) on a quick girl's weekend getaway, and although it was def. some time after my first brunch visit - Evangeline DEF DID NOT DISSAPOINT! We had early dinner reservations and were seated outdoors which was super cute and intimate, also really nicely lit all around. Service was still A1 and the menu was a little different this time around with some seasonal specials. Let's dig in: (1) Frites - perfectly crispy hot fries, lightly seasoned and so easy to eat. (2) Smoked salmon on potato cakes - this was sooo tasty!! the smoked salmon and house crème fraiche sauce were beautiful together, pickles and veggies added a nice bite, then topping it off the - potato cakes were crispy while nice and soft on the inside. Unique and one of my faves! (3) Braised pork - this was OK, the cheesy base was rich and tasty, while the meat itself was a little drier than I expected and flavor was not too memorable. (4) Risotto - this was soooooo freakn good. Rich, Creamy, and buttery in all the right always. Great amount of seafood with some veggies to freshen it up as well. Would def. order again! (5) Apricot/Peach dessert- this was OK, the flavor was good but I think texture needed some help, I felt like the "pie" needed some oozy sauce or moistness in it overall, it was very dense and a little stodgy. (6) Chocolate Mouse - this was soooo decadent! Not too sweet at all, beautiful and silky with some crunchy nibbles on top and fresh cream. (7) Paloma cocktail - great cocktail! I wanted to love this place because it came highly recommended by many of the locals. We arrived around 615 and the restaurant was in full swing and the crowd was only increasing as the night progressed. We were seated in the heated outside area, which was fine. Our server took forever just to get our drink orders and it seemed like after we got water we barely saw her again. We eventually had to flag her down just to get bread and starters. We were eventually able to place our food orders, and what a mess! Each of us ordered the French onion soup, which was ultimately good, however two of us asked for extra cheese and they literally brought out two slices of unmelted cheese on a plate! WTH?! We didn't complain, just dealt with it. The first round of entrees came out, which was my étouffée and it was cold. The rest of our party didn't get their food for at least 10 minutes after. Come to find out there was a mix up in the kitchen and I was given a dish someone else didn't want, thus the reason it was likely cold. They forgot about one of our orders and by the time it came out all of the rest of us were done eating. The food overall was just okay. I wasn't blown away with any of it. The étouffée was cold and mediocre. The hush puppies tasted like donut holes (I don't like sweet foods), the gumbo was absolutely horrible and tasted charred. Wasn't a fan of the fried pickles either. The bread was pretty good, but for $5 per serving it better be. This was a hard pass for me and I will likely not be returning. I feel mixed about this review. On one hand, the meal was fresh and delicious. I would give them 5 stars for the quality of the food. We enjoyed it. I feel I have to deduct a couple stars because we only got 9 pieces of chicken. I thought that was tacky to advertise 10 pieces but not deliver it. By the time we were back at our cottage eating dinner, we weren't going to consider going back out to pickup the missing piece. Also, a note to the kitchen, this may be a personal preference but I think the potato salad would be better if the potato pieces were cut into smaller bite sized pieces. I don't really want to have to use a knife while eating potato salad. Loved the to-go box and the idea though. The chicken was cooked to perfection...crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. I was so happy there were chicken breasts (I wasn't sure, it didn't say on the menu) We were glad we had thought ahead to pack our own silverware and napkins from home as the meal didn't come with any utensils. My husband placed the order online and the pickup seemed to go super easy. (Not so much for the next guy who forgot his mask...ooops, hopefully that will help him not forgot it again though! Especially since they're 2019 MICHELIN rated We ordered: -2 drinks - the Incognito & French 1226. Incognito was sweeter but I enjoyed it quite a bit. The French 1226 was light and a good starter -Appetizers: The Vermont Cheddar and Mt. Tam cheese. Absolutely fantastic pairing along with the apples and honey on the board. Loved these choices. Also got the olives and cauliflower. Olives were great and not overpowering, while the cauliflower was perfectly cooked with just a little crunch and more like a salad. -Mains: Pork Shoulder & King Salmon. The pork shoulder was amazingly crispy on the outside, yet tender and juicy on the inside. A very generous portion as well + the bacon crumbles weren't overcooked . On a bed of fermented cabbage. It was incredible. We both loved this the most. The salmon was fantastic and perfectly cooked as well. With a nice crisp outer layer while perfectly cooked middle. Compliments to the chef on getting this perfect. The mustard vinaigrette garnish was not over powering which we appreciated. -1 negative is that upon being shown the dessert menu we opted for a cappuccino and coffee after dinner. However it was just after the typical closing time (although there were 6 other full tables as us) and the staff had already put the espresso parts in the dishwasher and there was no fresh coffee. Our service started out super slow and then picked up as the evening went on. I ordered the shrimp étouffée and it was good. At the table the gumbo, halibut special, soup and salad were ordered. Things were good but not great. As a person who travels to New Orleans frequently maybe my expectations were too high. And, maybe I should have known better than to come to Calistoga for New Orleans style cuisine. I think like most things in Calistoga it is also pricey to eat and so that was also a bummer because I had my New Orleans prices in my mind. I had a lovely birthday dinner here with my mom. We sat at the adorable two-person nook just off to the side of the bar. The restaurant is so tastefully decorated, even in winter the patio was decked out in holiday garb. I'd love to come back in the summer! I ordered the belgian wheat beer, salmon main, brussels sprout side, and nutella-waffle dessert. My mom ordered the sazerac, jambalaya special, and apple tatin. All incredibly delicious!! The service staff was very kind in wishing me happy birthday a number of times; they were helpful, quick, made recommendations and explained each dish, and brought out a special home-made sauce for the jambalaya. We were luckily enough to get a table at Evangeline without a reservation at a night where almost every other place in town was closed. Even on an unseasonably cold night, seated near the heater outside we were plenty warm. My fiancé and I weren't too hungry, so we decided to get lots of small plates to split and drinks. We started with the baguette with Vermont creamery butter - the bread was delicious and obviously fresh, but the butter was so chilled it was solid as a rock! We couldn't spread it over the baguette very easily, which my partner took more offense to than I did, but still something to note if you have a hard butter triggered person in your life lol. In the spirit of vacation, we opted to have two different fried vegetables - the fried pickles and the fried brussel sprouts. The pickles were PHENOMENAL, do not pass these up! The breading was the right thickness to balance the acidity of the pickle slice and the dipping sauce just rounded out the whole picture. The brussel sprouts were also quite yummy, super crispy and not overly dressed with flavors to disguise the vegetable itself. We also split the cauliflower salad which was a surprising winner for my partner who is usually not a cold cauliflower fan. We both really enjoyed the variety of things within the salad providing different textures (different colors/types of cauliflower, endive, cucumbers, and tomatoes) - and the buttermilk dressing was the perfect bit of fat and creaminess that the dish needed. To drink I had the French 1226 to start and the St. Claude Sazerac to finish - both were appropriately strong and balanced. The French 1226 was nice and light to start, with the champagne topper providing that nice bubbly and crisp aspect. The Sazerac was the perfect finishing drink to warm me up as the night got cooler. I could surprisingly taste the absinthe rinse (which doesn't always happen for me, and I love a good absinthe) and it was a great sipper as we finished our meal. If we find our way back to Calistoga, we will definitely be back to Evangeline to try more things! read more

This is an enjoyable place - nice spot, New Orleans music drifting in the background, and excellent service. The food was good, not great. The potato leek soup was tasty, but oddly served in this oversized, blazing hot bowl that accentuated the rather small portion at the bottom of the bowl that was actually just luke warm. The soup tasted good, but the portion was too small and not hot enough (despite the bowl itself being too hot to touch). The wines by the glass were good (Venge Cabernet and Storybook Zinfandel). However, the pouring of the Zin was less than that of the Venge, which itself was not generous, shall we say. The Zin pouring did not qualify as a "glass" of wine; it was more like an ample tasting portion. It felt like a rip off. The main courses of pork shoulder and lamb shank were basically good. The pork was the better of the two. The lamb was a little overcooked and needed some seasoning. Crème brulee dessert was good, not great, but also a rather small portion. Maybe this place would be better for brunch. We might try it someday. Anyway, it's a good place, friendly, a nice spot, with a few issues. read more

Online reservations was hard to get on the weekend. It made me think this place was the perfect spot for our anniversary dinner. We had a table for two in the patio area. We were backed against the restaurant wall next to the sink pipes that constantly had water tinkering noises. Due to the hot weather we were also constantly waving flies away from our food and drinks. The table was not leveled and constantly shifting with our movements. The service was great and attentive, about the only thing that saved the place. Now for the food we had the gumbo which had the right flavors but was watery as if all the items were tossed in and just brought to a boil. It needed more time to stew, simmer, and thicken. My husband got the burger, that looks like something I threw together out of the freezer. The burger was just your average backyard burger. The fries however were cooked to perfection. It was crispy and had the perfect lemon zest aioli. The pacific oysters were good in itself but I do miss my usual condiments of horseradish, and marinara sauce, the vinegar sauce was included. The sparkling sangria I got had all the descriptions of a perfect sangria but tasted like soda water and red wine with some slices of oranges and a cherry. It was not premade with fruits marinated into it. The berry panna cotta was on point with plating. It tasted great until I tasted either freezer burn or stale water from a fridge. Evangeline has a small indoor dining area/bar and then a great patio area for dining. It was a particularly hot day, so we decided to stay indoors for dinner. Here's what we got: 1. Chilled Corn Soup - The corn soup was a refreshing and healthy way to start off our meal. The radish, avocado, and chives gave the otherwise plain soup additional flavor and texture. It could have used a little bit more salt or a dash more of olive oil for some more flavor, but we still enjoyed this down to its last drop. 2. Crispy Braised Pork - There is a lot of hype about this dish on yelp. It's hard to turn down crispy pork, sprinkled with generous bacon bits, over cheesy grits! I thought it was delicious, but a tad bit salty. I think that plain grits would have helped neutralize the saltiness a bit. 3. Gumbo Ya-Ya- We wavered on getting this, but we are so glad we did! Even on this hot day, we slurped down this delicious hearty comfort of a meal. The andouille sausage in particular is the star in this stew. The gumbo was our favorite dish of the night. Made a day trip to Calistoga for mud baths! I knew we needed to get some protein in us before our spa day and this incredible restaurant was right next door! We both loved the decor, modern yet industrial as well! The Albert Einstein light bulbs over the bar were one of my favorite touches! The gruyer omelette was a lot of boiled not too seasoned lobster inside of an omelette. Would of liked maybe more gruyer in a sauce on top and maybe the lobster seasoned more and pan fried in butter and garlic etc.. Drinks: I got the maracuya drink (passion fruit). Maracuya is sweet when fresh and mature. They sell this pulp as a concentrate and it is strong and sour. This is was deffinetly made with the concentrate. I was not able to drink it even after they added some agave so I could drink it. Maybe it is my bad heartburn. My partner got a drink he enjoyed. Service: Excellent - considering SIP and this was opening weekend in Calistoga. Mm.. did not love that they charged me for themaracuya drink. I left it. A little worried wondering it was so quite. Soon, patrons kept coming in , almost full house. We were happy! First ,ordered a baguette with creamy butter, quite good. Next a skirt steak, which came out not up to our expectation. Host came and reordered it to medium rare, that was nice. My wife had a shrimp dish, which was okay , but not quite good, it appears less authentic, not much different to the Shrimp dishes in Chinese restaurant. The service was excellent! Just off the main drag in CalIstoga is a cute little creole-Ish restaurant with a gorgeous patio and tasteful interior - so lonG as you love globe Edison lights. When my wife and I stopped in it was just as they opened so we had the restaurant to ourselves. Started off with a couple wines - the by-the-glass list is sufficient if not impressive - and a cheese plate. The cheeses were uniformly delicious and, while a bit pricey, compensated for that fact by being in pretty large portions. My wife got the fried chicken sandwich and do ours it to be juicy, crispy, and huge. The fry on the chicken was so light it reminded us of tempura. The French fries were french fries, not much more to them than that. I went ahead and got the mushroom tartine, which was just absolutely stacked with delicious maitake mushrooms. They were perfectly cooked, meaty, and savory. They sat atop a nicely toasted slice of mild rye. There was a bit of a mystery grey sauce that looked odd and failed to contribute much flavor, but the overall dish was a success. Two complaints: the music selections were odd and quite loud. The strange, upbeat jazz piano felt out of step with either the creole or Avignon theming Second, the prices are a bit too high for the quality. Still, the dishes were solid, the menu focused, and we had a good time on the whole. read more

Had the HORRIBLE experience of eating here. I ordered the Steak Frites. I asked to have it cooked Medium. When I got it, it was Well Done. In addition, the chimichuri that comes in a small sauce cup was FROZEN! So the waitress realizes the chef screwed up and sent it back. I get a second order of Steak Frites and this time around, not only was the Steak still Well Done, but now the fries were NOT COOKED! How difficult is it to cook a simple dish like steak and fries??? Excellent food and service! Plus the whole side of the restaurant is outdoor seating which was great with kids during a pandemic. It didn't even feel like we were outside and was nice and warm. I ordered the Cobb salad which was delicious and a unique spin on the typical Cobb salad that you order elsewhere. My son had the French Onion soup which he said was the best he has ever had. My daughter loved the hamburger and fries and my husband had the pork shoulder special which he loved. Our waiter was friendly, attentive and knew the menu well.
