I tried to convince my boyfriend to eat here once but when we drove into the parking lot he got scared, so I knew I'd have to make any future journeys alone. Fast forward a few weeks and after interviewing at NU, I decided to stop in since I was in the area. It takes 20 minutes for the folks at the Chicken Shack to fulfill your order so try and order over the phone then pick up. Cash only. I ordered a four piece mix - thigh, leg, wing, breast with fries, bread and coleslaw. It was $6.99. There were a lot of different chicken combos that you can try with a few sauces. The menu is extremely extensive for basically only having one ingredient. It would be nice to bring your chicken to the rocks by the lake or a nice treat to bring home. It's not really a place you want to sit down and eat unless you're in a rush. Not much ambiance of a restaurant. The chicken was alright....I think I actually prefer Popeye's. This is hands down good old fashioned fried chicken. They do have a pretty big and diverse menu with items ranging from salads to catfish but I always get the daily special. The daily special: 2 Legs, 2 Thighs, Fries, Coleslaw, and 2 pieces of toast for about $5. They don't sell drinks but they have a vending machine. The best fried chicken I've found in Chicago, and pretty affordable for fried chicken dinners as well, with a pretty huge menu of items. I can stuff myself silly for under $12, and a $8 platter can pretty much do the trick. Juicy hot fried chicken that tastes great even without any sauce, crisp french fries, and great sides like fried mushrooms. Reasonably fast even if you don't call your order in ahead of time. I went here about 7 years ago in 2008 for a trip to Chicago over the break. Was brought there by a friend living in Evanston. Recently I went here again when I was visiting Chicago. I think it's the best fried chicken in the world! It was still as good as I remembered. I brought a few other friends here and they agree as well. They can't forget about this place many years later. Great fried chicken served hot and fast. You'll probably need to take your food to go, since there's not a lot of seating inside. Because of this, I recommend asking for the hot sauce or bbq sauce on the side so your food stays crispy. Fried chicken and fried fish generally come with french fries and a slice or two of white bread. Our fries rarely survive the car ride. They are so good when they are still piping hot! We have yet to substitute the fries and bread for spaghetti and a biscuit, though that is a posted option. I went to Chicken Shack in my quest to visit every acclaimed Fried Chicken restaurant in the Chicago area this year. I've been by this place many times, never realized that it was here. I arrived during the lunch rush, ordered a Breast & 2 Legs, which came with Fries and Bread and was surprised to get my order, piping hot within 10 minutes. There are a couple of sauce options, I selected BBQ which was definitely the right move for me. The chicken was crispy and juicy, the Fries were PERFECTION and the quantity of food was more than I could finish while I was there. This was a good choice for a hungry girl. Before you visit Chicken Shack, keep a few things in mind: There's a large menu that is on a wall in the seating area, not at the counter where you order, that displays a full array of menu items. I didn't see this until I sat down to eat, would have ordered wings instead of legs. The dining area consists of 3 tables with 4 chairs each. That's it and people sit at the tables while they're waiting for their orders. There are people who like chicken more than I do. Lots of people. Most people. In fact, with most chicken, I end up giving half of it to the cat once I get past the tasty skin or batter or whatever. But I liked the Chicken Shack bird that was brought to me tonight. Enough that my cat got nothing from me. The breast pieces were big and juicy compared to the usual Popeye's we get (albeit less spicy), with plenty of crispiness and flavor. The red beans and rice tasted relatively healthy, made with big kidney beans, though a little bland until doused with the vinegary hot sauce. The fries were okay--nothing special, but fine. Bonus points for all the packaging in our sack being either biodegradable or recycle-friendly. Second visit--finally went in. I sort of like the shacky decor, and they sell five-gallon buckets cheap! Anyhow, this time I had a lunch box loaded with fried catfish and a couple of chicken tenders. The tenders weren't as juicy or crispy as the regular bone-in chicken, but I liked the fish. Also had fried okra and fried mushrooms. The okra was my idea. It was cross-sliced okra, so the proportion of breading to okra was pretty high. When you ate delicious things because they were delicious, regardless of sodium, or fat, or cholesterol... I had one of those days recently. I walked the mile or so down to the unassuming building that housed this marvel and simply asked the woman behind the counter to give me her recommendation. I got deep fried bliss in a white take out box - two big, made-while-I-waited chicken breasts buried under a mound of freshly cut french fries. I managed to eat all of the chicken and half the fries - I could have stopped at one piece of chicken - heck, I should have stopped at one piece. But I chose not to. It's a rare day that I feel like taking home a big transparent-with-grease brown paper bag full of fried chicken and stuffing it all in my face on the porch... well, not as rare as I'd like. In any case, I was in a good mood when I got my bag full of half chicken dark meat home and ripped it open. Steam rose in waves off the meat and it was way too hot to bite into right away. Always a good sign. Well, the chicken didn't suffer from not being fresh - they'd clearly cooked it within minutes of my putting it in my mouth. The flesh was tender and falling off the bone, while the skin was in turn falling off the flesh. The problem was the flavor - there wasn't much in the batter and there wasn't enough hot sauce or barbecue sauce to slather sufficiently on. I think another reviewer mentioned that it would probably be better if they poured a bunch of sauce over the chicken and let it soak in. I agree. I think it would be even better if they spiced their batter more aggressively (read: any aggression at all). Ask for extra sauce or have some at home waiting, and you'll be sated and happy. read more

I've come here either when my guy friends are craving fried chicken or when we order it work for meetings. You know how greasy it is because they put a piece of white bread at the bottom of each box of chicken, and the bread is usually soaked through (my guy friends like to eat this, I like to throw up when I see them eat this). O God I miss this place. The only fried chicken in my current town is available at KFC or the deli from Krogers which makes me sad. Chicken Shack always makes fresh and golden crispy fried chicken, and you get the most satisfying crunch in the world when you take that first bite. The best deal on the menu is the all-day special - two thighs, two legs, fries, coleslaw, and bread all for less than $5. This used to be a staple meal for me whenever I felt impoverished and was looking for something quick and tasty. This goes amazingly well with dirt cheap beer (Miller High Life lite), and winding down your day while munching on this and watching late-night trashy reality TV is heavenly. I would've eaten here everyday except for the fact that it IS fried chicken, and I tried to be at least semi-health conscious. But every once in a while, indulge in some chicken and beer here. Honestly I cant say this place is at all good! I ordered the small perch dinner. Seasoned no. Batter no, meaning not meaning I like a cornmeal batter on my fish. Fries enough to feed a small family. Salted no. Had a little drive back home from this establishment so I thought Id steal a fries or two. If you don't season the fries after they come out of the grease they just taste like ughhh a potato. This is by no means a health food spot! Put some salt on those fries! Chicken shack = mediocre. I went based on Yelp recommendations and ordered the Bits meal. I went with two colleagues. One ordered the 1/4 dark meal and the other the chicken tenders meal. I think our general consensus was the the meal was fine, but we would all rather have KFC, Churchs Chicken, etc ... The plus was that the food was not greasy and you do get copious amounts of food. The fries were endless and you get two slices of bread. The bits were fine, but definitely needed the hot sauce and ranch I had to go along with it. The 1/4 dark meal looked piping hot, as if it were freshly fried, which is a plus in my book. For some notes - it is cash only. Customer service is mediocre. You need to ask for condiments (ketchup, salt etc). Sodas are done via the can in a vending machine and they run you 80 cents. They are somewhat cheap on the napkins. I never thought I'd find fried chicken that reminded me of the South so close to where I currently live. It's always perfectly cooked: the meat is moist and the batter is oh so crispy. The catfish nuggets are also pretty good, though a tad on the salty side. For sides, the fried okra was a little slimy, the fries are okay, the mash and gravy is okay, and the biscuits are actually not bad. First of all, I have a hard time taking any review seriously that suggests KFC as a better option for anything. That said, we tried Chicken Shack for the first time last night and loved it. The chicken was crispy - not greasy at all - and super tasty; the rib tips were nice and peppery; the barbeque sauce was super tangy. The sides were adequate - we got rice & beans and cole slaw and I had no complaints but they didn't blow me away. Dinners come with a ton of pretty good (though not great) fries. Best of all is the price - a 12-piece discount bucket (legs & thighs), a rib tip dinner, and two large sides for $21. Can't beat that! It is, literally, a shack - a small building with a counter, a kitchen, a couple of soda machines, and a few chairs to wait in. Let me start by saying that there is nothing better than the Rib tip & 1/4 dark combo (that means a leg and a thigh). Their rib tips are frighteningly delicious. They're moist and perfectly seasoned. Along with that the standard chicken is the greasy fried perfection of all fried chicken. However, my personal favorite is the liver box. I love this place. My coworkers order takeout/delivery from here for work every quarter or so. Sometimes I feel a powerful hankering for fried chicken all on my own - I blame this place. This is my first review on yelp. I have been there for years and never thought of writing a review for this place. Now I left Evanston and it always reminds me the good times there. I love this place, because it is so tasty and fresh and open till late night. Most of the time I just order a 4-wings dinner and that could make me happy for a night.
