It's a shame the way customers are treated as the product is not that bad. Not worth it to return. Not only will they not return phone calls but when told my mirror should take about a week and I had to call 3 times to get someone to advise what the timeline was (two weeks later) I was advised that "I needed a hobby, maybe take up knitting" since I had nothing better to do than reach out to them to see when my $800 order would be ready. Evanston Glass & Mirror did a PERFECT job for us. Yesterday, Cesar and Carlos arrived at my mom's house n Des Plaines. I referred them as I had used EG&M for a major renovation at our house a few years back in Evanston as they had done an amazing job for us. The window they installed was complicated. They had to remove the siding around a huge picture window that was 7' x 5'. Not an easy task. We were advised that there was a chance that the siding could be difficult to remove and they weren't sure of bending. They removed the old thermo pane and installed the new one. When they finished, it was perfect. The siding was unharmed due to their professional removal and the site was totally cleaned when they left. Friendly and fairly priced in-town business. I stopped in to have some glass shelves made and found them to be quite reasonable. Also had some small paned windows that needed to be repaired and they came out within 24 hours. Two men arrived and were organized and very deliberate with their cleanup. A must for glass repair. Our next door neighbors referred us. No job is too small. I like them for that. The guys are friendly and conscientious. They do great work.

They said they would call me when the glass was ready (estimate of two days). I received no phone call. I called the next day, during business hours, but got no response. I called a couple of hours later--still no response, so I left a message. The message was not returned. That was on Saturday. I called Monday morning, but they couldn't find the glass. They took a while to look around, then asked if I had ordered insulated glass (or some other, similar special form of glass). No, I said, just plain float glass. They said they would have to call me back, which they did --about an hour later. They said they got confused because there were two similar names on tickets. The person on the phone had quoted me a cost of $30. When I went to pick the glass, they charged me $38. I didn't quibble at that point. I just wanted to get out of there as quick as I could. Extremely disappointed. We provided measures for our glass shelfs and these guys shorten our shelfs about 1/8 of inch without telling us or asking us. When we found about that they just said it's standard without apology or even saying sorry and that it's will not have any impact. The shelfs are short and we can't use them. The guy who is always at the front desk is- what's a nice word- A Character. I think he may be the shop owner. I really do mean that in a nice way. It's actually refreshing to meet someone who is himself, not overly sappy polite but always helpful. I've used them for everything from mirrors, aquariums, picture frame glass to bird cages. Always great to fix items rather than toss in the trash. read more

We retained EG&M to replace the window glazing (caulk) for 20 windows in our vintage home. The work was scheduled promptly, the men worked diligently and they replaced individual panes with upgraded glass where needed. EG&M provided enough labor to get the job done in three days. I went in and asked them to cone out and replace my broken sidelite next to my front door and was told someone would be out to measure within the week. After the week went by and not seeing anyone, I called and was given an apology and was told again that I would have someone come out the following week to measure the window. Good thing I didn't hold my breath. No one ever came. When I called today I was bluntly told that there's no one able to come out and I should find someone else to do the job. Wow, not happy with EG&M. Had a broken window by my front door. Called and, after a couple follow-ups, I was told they would send their guys out after 2 PM. They finally showed around 3:30 but not "guys", Marty (owner?) and an apprentice college kid. Very nice--that's where the good ends. They bragged that they use a torch to remove the putty (90% of the putty fell out with the window, could have easily used a razor knife and done much less damage) and the helper then used a MAP-Pro torch around the opening. This gas burns super hot, not suggested around wood and HUGE overkill for softening putty. Lots of melted paint and quite a few bubbled, burned areas, (not super). Also, it's wood, old wood, now I get to worry that it's smoldering and my house will burn down tonight. Then they cut the glass too short--twice. Insisted the piece was fine the second time (putty seeped through from the outside to inside the window--it's too effing short for the hole). Installed the points, kind of. The shoulders are a 1/4" from the frame, not flush, so they stick out further than the putty in 2 spots which will allow them to rust. Then Marty, a master craftsman?, applied the putty sparingly, like it costs $1,000 an ounce. It looks like sh't and the line is so narrow you can see the backside of the wood on the moulding inside the window. It is 1/3rd the width of the putty on the adjacent windows, on the front door and on the other door light. Craftsmanship and pride in your work is apparently not something they are interested in. I told them I was not happy, he then made it worse, handed the job off the the helper and I finally said "F" it, whatever". I already knew I had to hire someone who would do a quality job, cuz this wasn't it. Unfortunately, I did not tell them to take the glass and bad work off my property; instead I paid them $110 to do a crap job I now get to have redone. Not happy and feel like a fool. read more

I broke the screen on my storm door April 2021. I happened to see Evanston Glass & Mirror while shopping at Harold's Hardware store. I called EGM and arranged to have my screen panel picked up before 8:00 am so they could take a look at it and give me an estimate. They gave me three options for screen replacement: aluminum, fiberglass, and pet (least to most expensive). I decided that the fiberglass screen should be sturdy enough and keep most bugs out. Due to my busy spring and summer work schedule, I couldn't return to the shop to inspect the two different materials to make a decision until early August, 2021. The shop closed early on weekdays and completely on weekends. Near end of the summer, my screen was still there and they repaired it within 2-3 hours after my second visit. The total repair cost was very reasonable and affordable. read more

I broke a pane of glass on my front door moving in. I sent my wife to EG&M to get a very simple piece of glass. Very rude to her (the proprietor told her that she was "living on borrowed time") she saw the open sign and walked it, apparently that was an error 30 minutes before closing time. The glass was to be just shy of 11 inches square. Turned out to be just proud of 11". I went back and waited an hour for them to polish off 1/16" off of one corner. Even the proprietor returned to the store saying "they're not finished yet???" In the end the glass worked out fine, but it was a struggle. read more

Fast forward 2wks and I called to follow up. They lost my order. I understand things happen but they are borderline contentious when you call there. I cannot recommend this business to anyone. This review is long overdue. I was busy with my construction but now that it's finished I will write it for the benefit of the next person who is considering using Evanston Glass and Mirror. I called to ask if they would be able to reinstall a shower door that they had originally installed a number of years ago. They said they could and that I should call them when I was ready to have the door installed. I called just before the July 4th weekend and they asked me my name which I gave them. I didn't realize that the account with them was under my husbands name which shouldn't have been a big deal but I could hear someone in the background mocking that "idiot doesn't even know whose name is on the account". Surprising but I disregarded it. The man I was speaking with then suggested a day and when I pointed out it was the 4th and that that was ok with me he switched the date but I could still hear the man in the background saying something about me. I said thank you and right before I hung up I heard one of the two men say something so crude and so disgusting and inappropriate about me that I won't repeat it here but I yelled into the phone that I could hear them at which time they hung up. I called back and not one of the cowards was willing to pick up the phone. Finally some poor guy from the back picked it up and told me that he didn't know who had answered the phone but that he would leave a message with the owner . I told him what had happened and that I don't blame him but that I needed to get a call back asap from the owner. In the meantime, I wrote an email to the address on their website to the owner. The following day I got an email back from the person who said those terrible things saying that he had been drinking at a party and shouldn't have said the things that he said and that he was sorry. He then told me that I would get a call from either him or the owner on the next workday which I promptly declined. I had heard more than enough and didn't care to have a conversation with either of these men. No surprise but I didn't get an email from the owner. He let his employee take the full blame and never reached out. The things he said were disgusting and inappropriate and even people who are drinking don't say those things unless they same them all the time. I believe that there is a culture at this business that allows this to happen. Other reviewers have complained about the rudeness at Evanston Glass and one woman of color suggested that people of color shouldn't use them. I will amend that to say that no one should patronize this business. read more

I sent a copy of an older invoice with measurements on it via text when I placed the order, made sure to clearly state MY name and MY number as a contact. 2.5 weeks later I call, and am told they were ready and a call was placed to the person's name on the invoice. Then I was told they weren't ready. What? Was assured they'd be ready last Friday or Saturday. Called today, nope, sitting "in a file" (again, what?) under the same person's name...not mine. So maybe they'll be ready today. Maybe. Or maybe soon it'll be too chilly(WINTER IS COMING) and I won't need them, or maybe I'll order from somewhere else that knows how to write down contact info that's been given THREE TIMES. We paid a lot for Luis Acosta to create and install a custom angled shower door. He did, and everything appeared to go well. However, after a year, the silicone sealant installed in between the two sheets of angled glass (approximately 120 degrees) started to curl down and disintegrate, causing a noted gap between the two sheets of glass. I called and spoke with Marty around November 2016; Marty said they were busy, but recommended that I go into the store and show him a piece of the silicone sealant because he did not understand exactly to what I was referring. I cut off a piece of the failing (and falling) silicone sealant, and brought it into the store. He looked at it and said he would review the catalog and order me a tube of the sealant. He would also need to check with Luis, who installed it. The material would cost about $18. Later on that day, Marty called me and informed me that Luis said I would not be skilled enough to apply this sealant, even though the application would be similar, if not identical to the process of applying caulk. This would be easier, because, unlike caulk, the volume of the sealant would be in a uniform piece, and the length would be pre-cut. Luis would charge $150 to come to the bathroom to install that one strip of sealant. He was busy and would call after the first of the year, in 2017. I never received a call, and find the charge outrageous. Others would have just sold me the sealant, but no, not Luis. He needed to place it on the door himself; a 5-minute process for which he would charge $150, a higher per minute rate than litigators in large cities. Do not use him. read more

Wow- I am totally shocked this place got good reviews. I called once, they took my name "we'll call you back." No one called. So, I went in (while visiting Hartigans) They took my name for someone to call and schedule me - no one called. I called again (don't ask why) they scheduled me. 1:30 Tuesday- no one shows up. I call - they send someone over within an hour. Great I thought. Nope- I call after waiting for an estimate, go figure they can't find my ticket. Hmmm at what point should I have given up? Absolutely the best!! Joe was such a pleasure to work with! He made a new mirrored sliding door for our foyer after I cracked one. I thought it couldn't b replaced as the doors were 25 years old! Joe and Evanston glass made an identical door that matched exactly!! So reasonably priced for all they did and installed it too!! Incredible service impeccable work! After breaking our bedroom window in the middle of January and right before a huge cold front coming in, we were desperate to find someone to come fix it. After a few phone calls, we thought we were looking at about a $400 price tag and having to replace the entire window even before labor. EGM charges $90 per hour and the entire process was only $164. My mirrored medicine cab had cracked *and* screws had fallen out such that the door was hanging by a screw that I couldn't find. The company replaced the mirror, but seemed to be mystified by the lost machine screws. The company rep returned, dropped off the repaired door, and picked up one remaining machine screw. They also took two key pieces of mounting hardware that are not familiar to me - they were not simple screws but were integral to repair. Then...nothing more from the company. They returned calls at first, promising to come out. They never showed. Now I have a mirrored cab door with no mounting hardware. The company has abandoned me and haven't returned the metal parts they took. I guess I'll have to find a cab company and buy a new door? This company is irresponsible. My wife and I recently broke our backdoor window moving a couch, and we already had a cracked window in our living room. We decided to call Evanston Glass and Mirror after seeing its great reviews on Yelp, and it proved to be a great decision. Booking them over the phone was really easy, and they even offered to come out on Saturday, which meant I didn't have to miss any work. And they gave me a specific time for the repair - not a 2 or 3 hour window - and the repair man showed up exactly on time. He was very friendly and did a great job. The new windows look great. I thought the price was pretty reasonable as well, so things really couldn't have gone any better. read more

She tells me I don't know anything and can only lock up. Really unprofessional and purely incompetence. Didn't offer to take my information or anything. While some of our furniture was being replaced since it was damaged, Marty was kind enough to hold the glass for us in his shop until the new furniture arrived.
