Sadly mediocre food. We ordered an open faced Turkey sandwich which arrived with only 3 sad, thin slices of turkey. A good diner would have piled it up! The french onion soup was also lacking, arriving with just a wad of cheese in the middle. The fruit and granola was all right. Other then getting punched in the face by the stuffed animal bear ( not 100% it was a bear nor am I 100% it was even an animal) while sitting down to take a picture with it. Who says, "let's drive 45 minutes out of way into the middle of nowhere to try a pie and pancakes"? Me. After seeing this on tripe-D, I had to check it out during a road trip to New York. It's out of the way since you have to take Albany post road, a bit of a detour from the main highway. Regretfully, the side trip wasn't worth it as the food at Eveready was good, but not "destination worthy" in my books. Arriving at the diner on a Sunday afternoon, the place is a throwback and unfortunately wasn't very clean. Our seats were covered in crumbs, and the utensils weren't clean. We had to get new forks and knives. I ordered the breakfast to get the pancakes and strawberry whipped butter, a French apple pie, and a cinnamon bun to go. The pancakes were good, but the strawberry whipped butter was a nice twist you don't get most places and that's what made the meal enjoyable. The sausages were large so the meal was quite filling. Above average? but destination worthy? On it's own, no. So maybe the pastries could help make this place destination worthy. They supposedly bake everything fresh that day, so I was looking forward to the pies. Being an apple pie pastry nut, I tried the French apple pie, because you can always judge a restaurant by it's pies. It's basically a normal apple pie, plus frosting, walnuts and cranberries sprinkled on top. Sounds delicious, but it was a let down. It was ok, but wasn't anything special and I wouldn't get it again. The cinnamon bun didn't taste fresh either, it was alright, but it was a bit bland and dry. I had high hopes for this place, but was disappointed. It's a good stop if you live in the area, but if you're just passing by, it's not worth the 30-45 minute detour. A diner is a beautiful thing to have in your own town, especially one with great quality and service as this one! Whenever I get a hankering for a giant slice of pie or a hot chicken pot pie, this is my go-to place. My husband is obsessed with their fluffy pancakes and waffles, and I can't resist the crunchy fries and feel-good platters. The servers are always smiling and the atmosphere is always happy. It's nice to see a neighbor or two(or five)whenever we go, too. This is definitely the local watering hole! read more

Returned here today for a second time (I don't remember my first visit, as I was a little un-sober - apologies to all concerned). The Eveready is often busy but worth checking out. Some of the dishes are a little steep but the portions are BIG - and the menu is surprisingly varied (there's an impressive selection of salads). I didn't really have my food critic head on, I was too hungry... So; Trattoria chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries = yum. Parmesan chicken salad = also yum. Nice big root beer, too. Staff are quick and helpful; service is reasonably quick even when busy, and you will be damned full when you leave. Although devoid of atmosphere, this is pretty much as classy and as pleasing a diner as you're ever going to find. read more

This is by far the best diner I've ever been to. I've come back several times with friends, despite the fact that it's 20 minutes away from Vassar. I've got two recommendations from their large and well thought out menu: the Santa Barbara club (forgive me if it's the Santa-something else) and the Jitterbug. The SBC is a superb chicken sandwich with bacon and avocado among other goodies between some excellent bread. The Jitterbug (best deal on the menu) is excellent medium rare--it's a tender piece of beef resting on some soft white bread with good mashed potatoes and even some decent veggies. And if you get fries you might want to try their honey mustard with them (I'm a ketchup guy but this better). Now some cons: huge portions (take home half of it, perhaps) and there's always a 10-20 minute wait for dinner on weekends. Get an ice cream sundae at the end, but only if you have a friend to help make it disappear. The prices are higher than your national diner average. Nevertheless, this is another Poughkeepsie area gem. read more

Prior to a visit to Hyde Park I'd never heard of Eveready. The hotel gave me a list and said it was close. Ok, close is good. I was greeted fast and courteously. Seated immediately too. Nothing to complain at all about the service. Next to the food. Ordered a special, Mama's Roast, with a garden salad. Salad arrived fast. FRESH! Probably the most fresh, simple iceberg salad I've had in a restaurant. Not too large, not too small, crisp and fresh. Great here. Entree came next. Large portion of beautiful roast, mashed potatoes and julienne cut squash. Nicely presented in a comfy looking way with pan drippings. As for flavor, this is was one of the best "pot roast" dinners I've ever had. I have cooked and eaten a lot of gourmet and foodie pot roasts but this one beat any of them, even my own. Great quality meat, perfect buttery mashed potatoes. Whipped but with texture, and al dente squash. Pan juices were the perfect compliment too. Just enough to give flavor and moisten if wanted but not a soupy mess as is often the case. After service was fast and courteous as well. All in all, with a beer and tip the bill was about $25. Very much worth it!. Given my experience I would definitely recommend the Eveready Diner. Great food, great service, good value, clean establishment and fantastic, vintage diner motif. I got the foccacia burger, the house salad with honey mustard and finished my mom's sausage panini with a nice pilsner of stella. i have to say i was impressed for a diner in such a small town. their portions are quite generous and their menu is very extensive. i went kinda late but i would bet that the place is packed throughout the day. if youre ever around this part of ny, stop by, you probably wont regret it. the kind waitress said that their specialty is their bread which is good for me because i got the foccacia burger. so thats something to think about. this place definitely beats denny's. review update on May 21, 2008. what was i thinking comparing this place to denny's? how could i do such a thing? i feel embarassed and i hope eveready forgives me if they get the opportunity. i saw this place on Diners Drive Ins and Dives on the Food Network with that host who's a complete stereotype and thinks he is funny. oh my goodness there was a whole new world behind the kitchen doors of this diner. The chilli as s a nice blend of red beans, black beans and corn with a healthy amount of ground beef. It was a little more liquidity than I prefer. They need to cut back on the salt in the chilli as well. We went late after a movie so maybe it is less salty earlier in the day. The combo sampler appetizer plate was enough for a table to share. The fried cheese sticks look fresh not the re cooked frozen you find most places now. The onion rings were a tad oily but freshly made as well. Overall I would go back and try more. This used to be a fine Diner. Now it is just a tourist trap. The coffee sucks, the food is marginally overpriced, and tonight I had a burger that was cooked sometime recently, but not before it hit my table. I told the manager, he denied my claim so I picked up the burger squished it in my hand and handed it to him. I asked him if it was hot. He said no I asked him if it was warm he said no. If he had apologized he would have continued my business. But alas. However the wait service have always been polite and helpful and very friendly. I ate there the night before last and I really had a great time. The atmosphere is nice, the staff is on top of things, and the prices are pretty good considering the quality you're getting. I got the BBQ pork ribs, and I felt very content with my meal. The soup that came with it was flavorful, the corn was cooked properly, and I really loved their BBQ sauce. I was in a hurry so I stuffed the baked potato into a box and took it home, and a few hours later it was still kind of warm and tasted good. I will definitely be back. read more

Fairly extensive menu but what they are known for is good homestyle comfort foods. Try the meat specials or excellent skirt steak, but be prepared for a huge entree. My friend ordered the beef brisket special and both of our meals were at least 2 plus sizes, so expect to doggy bag a full meal home. My recommendation , don't fill up on appetizers otherwise you won't finish the entree. Disgusting. I saw an employee use the bathroom and walked out without washing his hands I told the manager, his words; ohh, he is done for the day!... really.... and that makes a difference? yerk. Went in there last night about 9:30-10:00 was seated right away however we had the waiter from hell! I love the sister restaurant in Brewster, but this one never fails to disappoint. The food is just not as good as Brewster. The bread on the bruschetta appetizer was soggy. We sent it back, and the second one was just as bad. The spin dip was tasteless. The black Russian cocktail we got was so light it looked like weak iced tea. The tortellini soup was enjoyable, as was the sun pasta. One of our party enjoyed the tiramisu cake. But overall, save your money and pick a restaurant with less surly employees. read more

The food was insanely good, the service was great, and the place was clean...Nary a bug in sight. Either people ate at a totally different place or they are ridiculously nitpicky. We had the Mozzarella Sticks for an appetizer and they were out of this world! The breading was obviously homemade, perfectly seasoned, and made the dish. I had the chicken and biscuits for my meal and it was also delicious. TWO chicken breasts and biscuits, plus a huge pile of mashed potatoes, all swimming in chicken gravy, mushrooms, carrots, and peas. I ate half the meal and had enough for dinner that night. Everything was--again--homemade, and it showed. Like chicken pot pie but better. We split a slice of Boston Cream Pie for dessert and it was just as good as everything else. We went here before the movies and let me tell pivot was a mistake. The kids asked for Shirley temples and they were served in plastic cups so small they were done before they even started. Best diner food I have had in a long time! We drove by on the way to FDR. The lot was packed and the smoke billowing from the rooftop smelled delish! We knew we were coming back after the tour, which we did, and it did not disappoint! I had a hearty corned beef on rye with coleslaw and it rivaled any deli in the city. The kids had milkshakes, which they loved! The serving was big enough for them to share. The waiter even split it into two glasses for us so they could both have whipped cream and a cherry. Super nice of him and the kids were happy. They shared an order of perfectly cooked fries and the Eveready Pileup, which was basically a sampling of their most popular apps. They weren't a fan of the wings but everything else got devoured within minutes. The service was quick and friendly and the place was clean.
