Disappointing all around. This once classic well know diner is distressed from a leaking ceiling with buckets in the isles, to poor and musty ventilation and unsanitary surfaces. Decent diner with cute decor. I started with a Vanilla Malt Shake, which was delicious. They even served extra shake in a desperate cup, which nearly doubled my original amount. I ordered the Gyro Pita and Mitey Bites. I would not recommend the Gyro Pita. It seems like they took prepackaged gyro meat and microwaved it, rather than cooking it. Looked and tasted like cartoon meatloaf. The pita bread itself was well baked but dry, as they did not add hummus or lettuce or feta... or any other classic gyro toppings. The Mitey Bites were decent, they're about the size of a regular burger but you get four of them for the price of one! The burgers were well cooked but the buns were strange (pictured) and rather dry. The accompanying sauce saved the otherwise unflavored and dry burgers. This diner isn't disappointing, per se, but with the sheer number of diners in the surrounding area, I wouldn't return unless I were really craving a milkshake. read more

We loved this place! It's got that old school retro vibe and even has a drive thru. Our kids thought it was so cool. I'm shocked by all the bad reviews because everything we ordered was delicious. We only had breakfast food but worth five stars and the portions were huge. They only lost a star because they need help we waited awhile to be seated. What a great idea - it could be habit forming! For lunch, I had the half chicken special and a cup of soup. Tasted great, and more importantly it felt very healthy. The waitress's attitude sucked, though. She was very dismissive. I could see the liquor bottles so knew they sold drinks. When I asked for a drink menu, she deadpanned "oh, we don't have a drink menu" and made no suggestions whatsoever. Ok, we just have to wing it then I guess. She was like that with every interaction. Came in to have my usual and specified not to a have a sauce on my meal because I am allergic to it. The food came with the sauce on it and I told the server about it, she takes the food to the kitchen and returns with the same food with the sauce smeared as if it was removed with a rag. We were able to get seated fairly fast. But those booths were so small for a family of 4. Our drinks took forever to get to us; came at the same time as our food. Never had a bad meal here, and in my experience the Covid hammering that EVERY other local restaurant has taken a beating from hasn't effected Eveready. My favorite order here is the baked grits and eggs skittle. It's delicious. They have a lunch special with half a sandwich and Mac salad- the Mac salad is worth the (very reasonable) price of the meal alone. We would often go before or after hitting up the roller rink or drive in movie theatre next door. With a super expansive menu, the everready has something for everyone! What a fun place! The environment is fancy diner with chrome and kitsch. I had a Monte Cristo sandwich which was kind of unusual because it was open faced, but the turkey and ham were moist and delicious. It came with crisp home fries. My husband had a great Chicken Caesar which was excellent- tender flavorful chicken and perfect amount of fresh grated Parmesan and seasoned croutons with fresh lettuce and great dressing. It seems the establishments I visit that get 1-3 stars tend to be places my friends and relatives pick. We went here upon visiting my cousin who lives in Hyde Park. Eveready has a nice atmosphere with 50's diner era decor built in. The service by the waiter Brandon was top notch. The prices were fair. The food quality was just average for breakfast. We got there relatively early for a Sunday breakfast, and I was glad we did. They started getting really crowded as we left around 10:30 am. Apparently it's a big breakfast spot. The coffee was like shoe polish. Admittedly I am a coffee snob, but I know what Maxwell House or the cheapest brand at the grocery store tastes like. Theirs was worse. Don't order it. I truly had no idea that this place had been on a DDD episode. We were just paying a visit to the three NPS sites in the area and this place is convenient to all three sites on Route 9. If I would have known that I probably would have steered clear as I think that Guy doesn't have a clue. A lot of his restaurants have horrible reviews, asinine overpriced menus and the four places I had been to prior to Eveready which had appeared on DDD episodes all stunk or were mediocre at best. With that said, let's cut to what's right at Eveready: * The menu is enormous! I truly can't imagine a scenario where you could come here and say that they don't have what you're looking for. I don't know how many items are on the menu but it looks like well over a hundred. * The service isn't great but it isn't bad. We were seated right away, our order was taken right away and the check along with plates being cleared at the end were all done in a timely manner. The place was busy and our server looked overwhelmed which led to her never checking on us after the food arrived which means that we could have shot up a flare because we wanted a drink refill and it wouldn't have mattered but what the hell, you can't have it all. Let's cut to what's not right: * The menu is overpriced, period. Diner food for four people, two of which are eating off the kids menu, with no drinks ordered other than water should not be north of forty dollars. That's nuts. * While I know that Guy likes places that are "over the top" I'm much more of a Gordon Ramsey kind of guy. I prefer when places use the KISS method for their menu versus trying to do a hundred things half-assed in an attempt to try and appease everyone. The kids burger was charred black on one side, the chicken in the chicken cordon bleu was very, very tough like it had been overcooked which would be consistent with the burger that was overcooked and when eaten by itself the chicken was flavorlessly unseasoned. Add to that the Jose Tejas chicken sandwich with its overly oily/greasy nachos and this was not a trip to "Flavortown". On a sidebar, the the pies that we saw on display looked awesome but not at approaching five dollars a slice and not when we're already into this place for over forty bucks for a diner lunch. For whatever reason I'm going three stars on this one but it very much weighs closer to the two star side of three as in maybe a 2.5 rounded up than it does the four star side of 3.5 rounded down. read more

I grew up in this area and was recently there with my fiancé and my future in-laws. We were touring FDR and the Vanderbilt property and we needed a little pick me up. We stopped into the diner for milkshakes and some water and it was just as I remembered it years ago. We had chocolate malts and banana milkshakes and they were perfect and very much needed as it was 97° outside and we'd been walking around for roughly 2 hours. Staff is always pleasant. This place intrigued me from the moment I found it on Yelp. There weren't very many places in Hyde Park to eat breakfast so I gravitated toward this place. I give it four stars more for the atmosphere than the food. Don't get me wrong..... the food was good. But not great. I already had it in my mind to try the crab hash when I arrived. It was not bad at all. Some of the potatoes were slightly overdone and the eggs could've been a little more done. But that's OK... it was a very flavorful dish. The atmosphere was the best thing about this place. It's full of locals, some of whom I engaged in a delightful conversation about the differences in the north and the south and how technology is going to ruin the world. Some of the help were very "matter of fact"and some of them were extremely friendly. One waitress even showed me pictures of the Vanderbilt mansion on her phone. The food is subpar at most & their plates, mugs, silverware, etc are chipped & dirty, probably the same sets the opened the diner with. Nothing has been updated, including their menus, and the place is a giant ball of dirt. The booths are ripped and faded. The bathrooms are always dirty and smell. The stench lingers out into the restaurant no matter where you end up sitting. The owners are not friendly and have zero personality or care for their establishment.. which shows in the lack of updates. Forget about ordering takeout because they'll repeat your order multiple times and still get it wrong, thus making you have to drive all the way back for them to fix THEIR mistakes. Nice Diner! Had chicken Marsala with mushroom wine sauce with salad. Good big portion. Maybe the chef could have gone a little easy on the sauce, but 2 chicken breasts were nicely done without over cooking it. The salad was mostly lettuce. Would have preferred less lettuce and more other ingredients but it was ok. Had a lot of options so the customers looked like regulars. Food was great but on the pricy side for diner fare, you pay for the experience. Server Angela was excellent. However the hostess was a total b**ch. We asked to sit somewhere with windows after she took us to a different section. She took us to another section and while she might not of realized it, she was definitely showing an attitude. I've worked in several restaurants, mostly fine-dining and I understand it can be an inconvenience when you're trying to follow a rotation. I've done her job and it is common and extremely easy to work out those situations. You NEVER show a guest your dissatisfaction. Sugarcoated and lacking authenticity. We still like the food at Eveready, and we've been eating here several times a year since 2014. But an experience with a waitress recently ruined our enjoyment for at least one meal. Our server, Joanne, came to our table with an attitude and quickly managed to irritate one in our party almost to tears, first with her rudeness and second by ignoring us. We won't go into details, but there's no excuse for that kind of behavior from a server. We complained and minimized our tip. We wouldn't begin to urge anyone to stay away from the diner, only to hope that you'll wind up with a better experience and waitress than we had on this trip. read more
