Really Beware!!! Company Owners 6-25-17 Comment on Yelp is WRONG and misleading. He says the contract called for Stamped finish. We NEVER wanted or asked for Stamped finish or any other finish than Broom, see the picture of the Contract Statement of Work on contractors letter head that calls for Broom Finish. In my opinion the owners inability to admit they messed up the job is telling. If I wasn't home during the concrete pour and stopped them from stamping they would have Stamped it. Pretty basic - you have to follow the contract statement of work and give the customer what they want. Think about whether you want to risk having the poor results we got and then the contractor making false yelp comments months after he leaves the job. read more

In the organization I currently work, every 6 months, we are given a review and a grade. 1 is "not cut into it" and 5 is "by far the most outstanding". For what Evergreen Landscape & Concrete and their crews have just completed in my back yard, I would simply rate them a "5" without too much thinking. Our back yard project is basically to substitute the out-dated concrete with paving stones, reshape the planting area, build a porch for easy entry of dog, re-pipe, and to add path lights. We have been dreaming to have a new look of our messy back yard for years, and finally we decided to do it. Before we contacted Evergreen Landscape & Concrete (abbre as ELAC), we have contacted and got quote from at least 3 contractors. We picked ELAC as our final choices for the following reasons: 1. Evidence: We have nearly zero knowledge on the landscaping thing, therefore we really need to see things in front of our eyes. A picture tells everything. Other contractors either fail to show any evidence that they can do the job, or some ill-taken photo which made us feel like a scene under investigation. Only ELAC showed sufficient photo, and more in their iPad. The quantity and quality and their website have convinced us that they can do the job. 2. Knowledge and Ideas: There's only ELAC and one other contractor have tried to provide us ideas. Others failed to do so. Since we only have a very rough picture and our thought might be impractical, we really need valuable input instead of "yes yes that's a good idea and I can surely do that, and your quote is...". ELAC crew provided us 3 options to start from and they are not pushing us to take any option (usually the most expensive). With 3 feasible solutions in front of us, we were able to make up our minds easily. The other contractor tried to push us hard for his own idea but didn't mention why this idea is better than the others, which turned us off a bit. 3. Attitude: We respect people who are professional and we expect people with true professionalism should respect their customers too. ELAC staffs always show up on time, and the communication with them is always pleasant, even during some negotiation. Some contractors didn't even show up and they just messaged me after an hour without a phone call which made me feel like dealing with a child. Some contractors treated us as we will never know while neglecting the fact that people will GOOGLE using their cell phone and they will know in front of you. ELAC has been very honest to us, before and after. 4. Time of business: That is why we didn't even consider those gave us very bargained quote, because they could take the money and run away since they don't give it a damn about their reputations. ELAC seems to have built up their fame. We choose ELAC for the above reasoning. Their quote is probably the highest, but they gave us a feeling that this project will be a worry-free and it will worth every penny we pay - therefore we have selected them. The outcome: We love it, period. To be honest, the quality of work was way beyond my expectation. Simply look at the paving stones, you know they are really detailed, and they really want to impress their customers. The porch has successfully amazed us and we didn't expect they cut paving stones in that way to build that for us. After path light installation, our yard is glowing day and night now, we love our home better than ever now and we start to regret why didn't we ask ELAC to continue on our phase II project. From start to finish, working with Evergreen Landscape & Design has been a pleasure. They are true professionals; we did have 5 different contractors give bids on our yard. I first met with Mike, the EL&D salesman, and he took the time to understand the full scope of our hardscaping project (full backyard redo--with the complication of a drainage gully, which I now know is called a swale, running thru the yard.) Other contractors seemed to anxious to get me a quote; yeah, yeah they would do this and that--one guy didn't even measure. I wanted detail on the estimate; plus I wanted to make sure whomever I hired had the skill and experience to do the yard. EL&D did not disappoint, in fact they exceeded my expectations. Their bid was on par with 2 others--but everything was spelled out on EL&D bid. During the project, the team was prompt and worked neatly. EL&D was a crew of experts in masonry, concrete, capentry, and installing lighting. Ray, the project manager and owner, monitored the project daily. Ray pays attention to the detail--he had his team redo some of the stone work because he didn't like the layout. I thought it looked fine; but he was right, it did look better redone. Some details of EL&D work in our yard: -- columns and walls with stone caps are beautiful--the stone pieces were laid artistically; they were fanatics with the level; all stucco work was consistent in color and texture --composite benches were solidly constructed and finely crafted like furniture--I am so glad they recommended the composite--looks like wood with low maintenance -- full masonry bar w/grill with poured concrete top is precision---the top is smooth like granite, with a more sophisticated look, and again they were fanatics with the level; the fridge and stainless doors fit like gloves --poured concrete patio with salt finish has a consitent texture and drains perfectly away from our pool and walls --LED lights were added throughout the yard-it looks like a resort a night --update of our trellis: making posts wider and adding lighting took the yard to a new level Our yard was completely transformed. The team was so conscientious, polite and easy to work with that I think I missed them when they were gone---but now we have an amazing backyard!! I will post pics when I get my planting done, as a DIYer I have to do something myself--when it came to our need for hardscaping we knew we needed experts. I'm so happy with my new yard and I highly recommend using Evergreen! I have back problems so I was tired of having to water the spots on my front yard that the sprinklers don't reach so I wanted to get artificial grass. I only had a general idea of what I wanted but they were extremely helpful in bringing together my ideas and constructing something better than I imagined! I'm staring at my beautifully done front yard and so glad that I don't have to hurt my back anymore! Ray and his team did a fantastic job building our new backyard patio and arbor. They are very professional and also easy and pleasant to work with. When we bought our house, the backyard was hideous, with some old concrete and a small rotten wood deck. We drew up some plans on what to build and called Evergreen to get a bid. They had been highly recommended by neighbors. Mike came out, carefully listened to our ideas and asked some questions. Then he showed us some options on what they could build and also came up with the perfect solution to provide the shade we wanted to have. He pointed out a project they had just completed in our neighborhood. We walked by there in the evening and frankly were blown away. I remarked to my wife, well they are probably very expensive. So we awaited the bid which came the next day already, and it was very competitive. In fact it was lower than another firm that we has contacted. So it was an easy call to hire Evergreen. A couple weeks later the owner Ray and his team came out to start the job. It was amazing to watch them: Every detail was professionally and meticulously attended to, you could see top notch quality work everywhere you looked. In all that they were also very efficient: It took them just 3 and a half days for the entire project to transform our backyard. And I could not be more happy with the outcome. At the end we had a request to change something to extend the shaded area. Before I even finished my sentence, Ray said: "I will do it", and they came out and completed it the same week. Ray and his team did a great job replacing our deck with pavers to match the rest of our yard. For a relatively small job, the crew was big (6 people) so they finished very quickly. They were very professional, cleaned up everyday, and were a nice group to work with. Ray was always accessible and easy to work with. He went above and beyond and took care of little things (like a broken drip line) and also suggested changes that worked and looked better than our original design. Rip off and lacks customer service. I am the purchaser for a construction company. I order materials often for projects. I ordered stone for a wall and allow 15% overage. It was not enough to do the job. The measurements were correct the sq ft delivered was not. Thought, oh well I only need 10 sq ft., no big deal. So I order 14 sq ft. It was roughly 8 sq ft. See pic. I asked them to look at it and verify. I asked them to order more. They would not, they would not refund my money. He said he couldn't talk to stone universe because they are closed. I asked him for proof. So he took a pic. I said i needed him to sign the receipt with the acknowledgement. See pic. He said if i finish the job and am short then come back on monday and they will see what stone universe will do. It was 3:45, so I called stone universe and they were open till 4. See pic. I hire professional stone installer that has to travel to jobsite everytime. Evergreen is wasting my time, my installers and homeowners time. I am so angry. I realized that i was shorted twice. In his words "very expensive job" kept me from hiring Evergreen. I don't think he should worry about the cost because that's my job. His job was to give me a quote. What a great experience we had with this company. Mike was punctual and professional. He gave us so much information about things we hadn't even considered. I was very impressed with his knowledge, especially about the drainage. Our back yard has several levels and flooding and pooling was always a problem. Mike's design completely solved the problem. The masonry, artificial turf and landscaping all came out better than we expected. We had three quotes and this was the most reasonable. We had our front yard done a few years ago with another company and had an entirely different experience. The people that did the work so diligent and worked very hard. They finished the job ahead of schedule. I appreciated that Mike came by daily during the work to answer questions and had no problem accommodating a few minor changes to our original plan. Obnoxious & an poor salesmanship We met with Mike for a landscaping for that involved both a front and backyard. I should have not invited Mike for a onsite after our phone conversation during which he was not only extremely rude on the phone but totally full of himself. During his onsite visit, he continuously kept saying how he was extremely busy and some customers are a waste of his time. Suffice to say, we don't even want to consider Evergreen for the job given that Mike seems to think he is doing us a favor. I highly recommend Ray and his team's work. This is a very credible team, honest and professional. It was a blessing experience for me and my family working with them. The first I worked with Ray and Mike (Ray's sale manager) was already 4 years ago. I picked Ray's team at that time, because they were willing to put every details I requested into the contract. Ray said he would do a good job for his client anyway; whether putting down on a piece of paper doesn't change how his team do the work. I was impressed. To be fair, my contract was much longer than normal, although my project was small, comparing to other projects they were handling. Then for an unexpected family reason, I had to stop the project. Even though I already signed the contract, Ray/Mike showed understanding of my family situation and simply wished me good luck and let me go. I appreciated their attitude toward business and life. I re-picked up my backyard project this year. I picked up phone and called Mike... Their schedule was very full; but I decided to wait for a few month. Mine became their last project of the year. It turned out my waiting was so worthwhile; They did a good job. Ray was on the site every day, managing the project in person. He changed some of the design and made the backyard foundation better. I could tell his focus was 100% on "what's the right thing" vs. what's on the piece of paper or what I've paid. If it's not the right thing, he is going to discuss with you, no matter what. There were 6 people on my project. They worked hard and fast. It's a skilled and very well-coordinated team as I can tell. I was at home for the most part of the project for three weeks (the entire duration) observing. I'd say they paid attention to every detail when it came to quality! I was also impressed by how Ray assisted me in making decisions. My backyard has the design of a long bench. He recommended me to use 10'' wide wood. I wanted something greater than 12''. To help me make the right call, he brought me the real product and let me see, feel, and sit on the bench to test out. He also made it clear that he wouldn't charge me additional if I wanted the 12'' one. After all evaluations, I had to agree with him 10'' was the right call. The same with another decision to choose the color for the tile, he made the extra effort to bring me samples from store, vs. sending me to a store or only showing me pictures. Lastly, Ray went above and beyond to help me pick and order plants as some plants are special and were not easy to find in market. I would say he did everything he could to make the backyard my dream place. I feel grateful to Ray and his team's help. They deserve my family's full respect and recommendation. read more

This was my 3rd time to make changes. I thought that Mike would not want to work with someone who keeps changing their mind. I Emailed Mike once again informing him that I had made some changes from his last Bid. I told him that I understood if he was NOT interested in working on my project because of me changing my mind, but I'd like to meet with him once again & that I was now ready to begin our Front Yard Project. He was so nice and said sure I can come over and see what you want. Again, it was a Saturday. He said that they would be able to start on the following Wednesday & it would take 3 to 4 days excluding the weekend. He sent the new Bid and Contract which I accepted. One more thing I asked Mike if he could have our current River Rocks re-arrange. He said sure and at no extra charge. If I could give 100 Stars + for a 100% + Satisfied Customer I would! GREAT JOB So HAPPY! These guys did a great job at a competitive price.. From very beginning this was a great experience; initially Mike came out and surveyed the project for an estimate (concrete patio/walkway, synthetic turf lawn, remove all growth in parkway strip and replace with decorative rock and tree in yard). Quickly received estimate, timely answers to questions, list of local referrals to SEE their work. After getting all bids decided on Evergreen based on competitive price and the responsiveness to questions (emails and phone calls quickly returned, unlike some/many others). Mike came out a 2nd time to go over project again prior to contract and went over step by step what to expect. Ray (owner) and his team were outstanding, showed up on time everyday and got right to work. Day one had owner Ray and Mike with a crew of 7 arrive on time; Mike, Ray and myself reviewed all the planned work so there would be no confusion and then these guys went to work....and I mean work! I also liked the fact that the owner Ray was on site everyday (in addition to his lead Art) to make sure all went as expected. Job was completed one day early with exceptional results, not one issue, my last minute changes we "no problem" and taken care of. Our yard was left in better shape than when they started, every night the yard was left orderly with their tools and equipment neatly out of the way. We needed our home in Fremont to have the concrete backyard patio, front walkway, and driveway all repaved in tandem with making our yard more drought tolerant/low-maintenance. It was a very pleasant experience working with Evergreen from the very beginning. Mike, who came for the initial consultation, was very professional and helpful. We chose to go with Evergreen as their bid was the most reasonable one we received (in the mid-price range) compared to other estimates. They were booked a couple months in advance which was fine for us since we weren't ready to start immediately. No funds were required until the first day of the job, in accordance with the contract. They estimated it would take 7-10 days to complete and even with some rain delays, they finished in just 8 days. The crew of four pleasant and friendly guys, led by Ray the owner, dependably showed up on time every day. Ray was there every morning to make sure everything was on track and was always available if we had any questions (which we usually did!). Thanks to his many years of knowledge and experience, he consistently and patiently explained every step of the process. They got to work immediately every morning and always cleaned up before leaving every afternoon. We are very pleased with the final results and the high quality of the workmanship now on full display around our home. I agree with Bianca's review here. This place came up in a search when I was e-mailing another company as a "similar business," so I sent my e-mail to them too. Mike Medina responded and said he would come over to do an estimate on a paver patio. It is a small patio, only about 13 x 14 feet, but when I talked to him on the phone I estimated that it was roughly 15 x 20 feet. After talking to Mike though and seeing the reviews here, I'm glad his company won't do the job. When he came over he looked at it, we talked for about 1/2 hour, looked at various paver stones, and he told me he would send me an estimate the following day. However, the next day he sent me an e-mail claiming that the job was too small and that he would not be contracting it since the job would cost less than $5000. Why didn't he just tell me that right away without wasting my time? Also, he obviously does not value the power of making friendly connections since this job could easily have led to recommendations for more "lucrative" jobs. I live in a friendly condo complex where people ask for recommendations for contractors all the time through our community e-mail. I will not be recommending this company to anyone. And I suggest you also do not waste any time with Mike especially if you have a "small job" of less than $5000. I don't think this is a smart way to do business; just do a good job, no matter how small it is, and people will recommend you for the bigger jobs and you'll build a solid reputation and make more money. This company clearly doesn't get that, or have a solid reputation for that matter. My advice is to take your business somewhere else, to a company that actually will appreciate your business. read more

Ray and his team just finished our backyard landscaping job which involved a concrete area, synthetic and live grass, irrigation and creating a path and area for a shed. The crew always arrived early and worked very efficiently, and left the area very tidy. Ray was very personable, knowledgeable and easy to communicate with. As previous reviews mention, Mike is the initial contact and is not part of the crew. I did speak to him by phone, but he seemed to responded quickly to emails so decided to go that route. We got a number of estimates for our backyard sidewalk and patio. Mike was prompt, thorough and did what he said he was going to do throughout the process. We were on a tight deadline to get the project completed before Thanksgiving and it was completely finished, cleaned up and ready to use days before our guests arrived. On 10/21/09 we had Evergreen Landscape and Design (Also known as Evergreen Landscape and Concrete remove our cement patio and install a brick patio. We selected Evergreen because they were Diamond Certified and had a good reputation. A part of the job required that they remove 4 6"x 6" posts and replace with 4 Douglas Fir posts. Total cost of the work was $12,300. We were very happy with the work. On 10/8 we discovered termites in the of the posts. Called Mike Medina, Sales Mgr he came out to inspect the damage and right away said they had installed the posts incorrectly. They used the existing footings/brackets that were below grade level and should have replaced with new footings/brackets above grade level. On 10/9 sent us a quote for $980 (New footings/ brackets $380 and $600 for Redwood Posts). I called him and questioned the price and reminded him that he had told us that they installed the posts incorrectly. He got upset and said that I was trying to ( used a derogertory word) down that he was only making $125 profit. He said they were busy and it would be after Thanksgiving before he could do the work. Then he said that He did not want to do the work, find another contractor and hung up. I called Evergreens office and left 2 messages for the owner Ray Valderrama to call me. He never return my calls so I wrote him a letter on 10/28. He call 11/1 and said that he didn't receive my messages. He said that they did the work per the contract that Mike submitted us and didn't feel that they were responsible to correct the problem. I reminded him of what Mike had told us and he responded that he couldn't control what Mike says. He ended the conversation by saying that he didn't want to do the repair work. In my letter I offered to pay for installing the new footings/brackets and Evergreen to supply new Douglas Fir posts ( we didn't need Redwood) and labor to install. Approximate cost for Douglas Fir is $144 for the 4 Posts. The original cost to supply and install the Douglas Fir posts was $500 Obviously Evergreen does not stand behind their work when they are at fault. read more

Honestly, I am extremely surprised at all of the good reviews. We were so put off by Mike's attitude that we did not chose to go with Evergreen, so I can't speak to their work. I was extremely offended by Mike's condescending comments about our finances and my decision process. I guess he decided that we were below his target income bracket and didn't want to do work for us, unfortunately for him -- we were more than happy to give another business our money. When I asked about getting some stonework done, he sneered that we probably shouldn't go into the showroom to look at a BMW if we could only afford a Honda. Then when I asked him a couple of basic questions about concrete specs and their work methods, he said, "Are you the kind of person who worries about everything?" I kind of felt like he must have been drunk or something -- no normal person would act that way! Let me say Evergreen is not doing themselves any favors with this anti-salesman. What started out to be a beautiful backyard remodel quickly turned in to a complete disaster. Our backyard renovation was a gorgeous change at first, but quickly went down hill within two months. We asked that the new concrete be sealed and Ray insisted that it did not need to be. The brothers Mike and Ray suggested we use a screen for shade, which we went with and suggested we stain the trellis, we did everything the contractors suggested and within no time our new concrete was stained by the trellis and screen we had built above. Now all we have to show for the thousands of dollars we spent is a blotchy concrete with black stain marks all over it from the rain. When we called Ray to let him know about the damages he was speechless. Now we have damages that can't be cleaned and would've been an easy fix if the concrete was sealed like we had asked it to be. He never offered trying to come clean the stain, never offered to reimburse us being that he suggested the screen and the stain, and had no solution for us. I would've initially recommended this company to anyone, but that is no longer the case. read more
