I was looking for a nearby nursery to purchase some soil and browse some indoor plant options and was met with excellent customer service, a well executed and beautiful space and knowledgeable staff. Their products are intentionally organized outdoor/indoor which helped me navigate through a lot of the many beautiful options they had. I was seeking some low maintenance plants that could enhance my living room area. I found a number of amazing plants that could work, all of which were reasonably priced. Who knew this nursery has been here for 25 years, wow! I'm more than pleased with this beautiful nursery. I was helped instantly, Paul is very knowledgeable and has been in the business for more than 35 years. Their range of indoor/outdoor plants is huge and they have a various amount of succulents. I picked up a heart shaped hoya, pothos, and a succulent. Prices are reasonable, you definitely get what you pay for. I will say the customer service is exceptional and the reasoning I will be returning very soon! read more

Called ahead to see if they had any Meyer lemon trees and they happily said they did. Natalie was extremely helpful over the phone and let us know the exact type of Meyer lemon tree and that they had many in stock. We went over to the store, met a rep (I can't recall her name, but she was fantastic and told me all about which pot I should get), then Natalie was there to ring me up. She was super knowledgeable, friendly, and I left the store feeling great about the tree, how to take care of it, and that I could call the shop if anything came up. The staff here are super helpful!! I am new to gardening and had several questions about caring for my fruit trees and pest control. The staff spent lots of time discussing things me and showing me different options for treatment. I recently went to Home Depot and saw the same products I purchased from Evergreen for cheaper, but to me it is worth the extra cost for the great customer service! They don't have the best selection of indoor plants/pots, for that I would recommend another place. read more

I'm so glad we came here. Their knowledgeable staff helped us find the perfect tree for our yard. We have a small car and they helped us troubleshoot loading it and bringing it home. We definitely will be using them for all of our yard's needs. The only negative was that their recording online said they will special order plants for you if you want. I really enjoy my visits to Evergreen Nursery. It is nice just to wanter around and find some new flower or ground cover or just the usual herbs. The best part about them is they always have what I need and today it was just bee and fly traps for our party to keep the critters at bay while we eat. The service is spectacular here. There is at least one plant expert and the other people are very helpful and friendly. The quality of their plants is awesome. I have never taken something home that did not grow and did not look well taken care of when I bought it from Evergreen. They give great advice when I have a plant problem, and whatever they recommend works. The prices are fair for the quality of merchandise. We got all of our initial plants from here back in 2010 when we planted our back yard garden, and they delivered our trees and shrubs, and gave us a whole bunch of points worth of discounts which lasted about 3 years after. I always go here when I need anything garden related. The gloves I bought three years back are still like new. read more

I came here looking for Japanese maple trees, and this is what I found. They had a moderate selection of variously sized JMs all of which were healthy and great looking. The prices were more reasonable than some other places I've looked in to. They also have a ton of different landscaping plants, succulents, and vegetable and fruit plants. Again, all great looking and fairly priced. EGN also carries all the gardening tools and supplies you need. Spades, ferts, gloves, pots/containers. I will not be going to home depot or lowes for my gardening needs any longer. The drive to San Leandro to visit this greenery is well worth it. I'd rather support this nursery than a big box place. What really sets this place apart are the staff. The staff is what makes this place a diamond in the rough. Always ready to help, and extremely knowledgable! Not impressed. After reading the rave reviews here, I drove down to Evergreen to check it out. I found the plant selection uninspiring - very similar to what you would find at Home Depot. Perhaps more disappointing was that many of the plants were down right unhealthy - covered with rust, over grown and dried up. Instead, try one of these wonderful nurseries: East Bay Nursery, Magic Gardens, Annies Annuals, Thornhill, Broadway Terrace, Ace on Grand, and the CVS on Broadway. All have interesting and varied selections of healthy plants that thrive in our climate. read more

This is another "wouldn't have found it without yelp" success story. I find myself with a big sunny East Bay yard and a loathing for the big Home Despot type places. What to do re: gardening? Thanks, yelp! Evergreen was a pleasure to shop in. I found myself saying days later, "I really liked that nursery!" And I still do. They had a great selection of plants of all types at reasonable prices, the nicest outdoor decor items I've seen in one place at one time, and a huge koi pond that fascinated my wee helper. They also have a whole wall of seeds and bulbs and a fridge of helpful bugs for you to purchase and unleash. Everyone was very friendly there, including the employee that patiently translated what the baggies of sick tree leaves I brought in meant -- I call him the Tree Whisperer. And he was not at all fazed by the hyper-ness of my helper, which gives him extra stars. I really like this nursery!! Will definitely be back! read more

I like this place: We purchased a white fig tree from there last year - and we already had fruit-soo awesome! The little tree has grown over 2.5 inches in 6 months! We do take care of it of course, but how many places do you know around here (East Oakland) who sell genoa fig? I don't know any others.. All in all the place is cool, I buy tons of organic soil for my veggies and herbs as well as chicken manure, organic plant food and last but not least - seeds (we grow everything from seeds!). They have a large assortment of organic and heirloom - moderately priced. I wish we can buy bulk Fox Farm from them. I didn't give it a 5 star because, even though the employees are extremely helpful and will go the extra step to please/assist (as to find a hydroponics stores around!!) some of them are not as knowledgeable in terms of plants. I'm sure it takes time to form/educate the right person so kudos to this store! P.S. We are now planning to get a persimmon tree but not sure which is the right one for us. My hubby and I both love the "hard" fruit not the soft one.. :) I will run to the nursery for help and hopefully will come back with another great review! read more

This is our go to place for plants, trees, and garden supplies. We've redone the landscaping in our front yard all courtesy of Evergreen. We often come just to walk around the gardens and check for new plants. Also, the little one loves to ride around in the little wagons and stop to look at the coi fish in the pond. The staff here is really knowledgeable. We come with all our plant questions (particularly: why is my tree not flowering??) and Paul is always very helpful. Whenever we see a plant we like, we'll snag a piece of it and bring it in so they can tell us what kind of plant it is. We get the common name, the latin name, and we're led over to this book where we are shown pictures of the plant and its varieties... wow!! read more

I took a trip here one Sunday afternoon with my Grandma. We had a great time pulling a little wagon around the grounds picking up fun ground cover and annuals. They have a great selection of plants, and I would love to visit closer to planting time to see the spring/summer varieties as they become more available. I was particularly impressed by the variety of soil amendments and fertizliers they have. They had the conventional, and organic, which is what I buy. I got a big bag of worm castings and a huge bag of compost with chicken manure. Had a great time with Gram, and my plants definitely liked what I brought home for them. Also love supporting smaller nurseries. Home Depot does have some great stuff, but I'd rather by poop for my plants from more of a mom'n'pop. read more

It has been a blessing in disguise. I had such a negative experience at Evergreen -from the ground up- I switched my loyalty to East Bay Nursery in Berkeley. Everygreen owner, Norman, accepted negligence...because I forced the issue. However the evil manager, Kimberly, did not offer the apology I feel I deserved. This is a great nursery to come to! The employees are all very friendly and helpful. If you aren't sure what type of plant to get they give you recommendations. It's wonderful! They also have a great selection of plants to choose from for every season. I would say that spring time is my favorite time to come here because they have a bunch of tomato plants to choose from, pineapple heirloom, black pearls, the list goes on and on! Went here yesterday after calling around to find large planter pots that can house two young citrus trees. (Sooo excited about finally having a Myer lemon!) They told me over the phone about their half wine barrels, and are only 5 minutes from our new home, so off we went. When we pulled up, my bf saw their amazing old Japanese Maple tree and decided he absolutely needed one. So we bought two half wine barrels, two Japanese Maples, and a variety of fertilizer. The person we spoke with was very knowledgeable and patient about answering our questions. He even trouped us to the overflow area of the yard to show us the previous year's repotted Japanese Maples. Honestly, I've rarely been to a nursery (including Orchard Hardware) in which the staff wasn't knowledgable. But this guy was relaxed as well and his information seemed on a different level. The fertilizer was notably expensive but that's 'cuz it's the good shite. Kind of like going to Whole Foods vs Safeway to buy your produce. We'll definitely subsidize with cheaper stuff from Home Depot and Orchard. But we'll be back often to Evergreen. It was a lovely beautiful place to shop for a sunny hour or two. read more

Customer service is lacking here. The staff feels be-labored by novice questions. The energy is yuk, it's as if customers are a burden. Upfront, speaking candidly I don't have a green thumb, it might even (be purple) but I was grossly disappointed in the treatment I received by the elistest plant staff. I had basic care questions since the "how to care" instructions weren't working. My plant needed serious help after purchasing a week prior... to summarize, I won't be returning to this business. It's unfortunate the house plant looks to be dying; just like good "customer service" - dying. Evergreen nursery I'm afraid, falls into the bunch! Management isn't friendly or solution oriented, but rather brash, defensive and will attack unnecessarily. I went today for the first time. I was looking for some sage. Compared to all of the other mediocre nurseries you can go to, this place was the tops! I wish they'd had a section of California natives tho, but you can't have everything. Oh, and I was slow, and they weren't obnoxious about my staying fifteen minutes later, AND they seemed to think it was a big deal that I had come "all the way" from San Jose. read more

Poor customer service. The manager wouldn't respond to email or call me back. I ordered a gift card online, was charged and I never received the card. Followed up with the manager multiple times via email and phone. Also provided numerous chances to rectify the situation. Finally had to dispute the charge with my credit card company. ...as follow up to the manager's comments, I made the purchase through the gift card link on their website and I received a PayPal receipt listing their nursery's details. This is me: super impressed. Knowledgeable staff, good prices, GREAT selection. Three great reasons to support a local business, rather than a big box store like Home Depot. This place is fantastic, and we soon discovered why they were voted Best Nursery in the Bay. My partner and I decided to landscape our backyard, and we planned to go to both Home Depot and Evergreen Nursery for all of our supplies. However, we found everything we needed at Evergreen, and at competitive prices. We came away with six small bushes, a bunch of bulbs, flowers, and sod. We redecorated our backyard with 3 cafe tables and a bunch of plants from Evergreen. Good store, staff researched tables for us, thought they had two but found a third somewhere quickly, all three were on sale and look great. Always helpful loading heavy stuff at your vehicle. Like literally, every corner of this place is beautifully decorated and have a place for you to sit and enjoy the beauty that is so abudant here. Ofcourse, the koi pond is freaking awesome. I like nature and I like pretty sitting areas; if you do too then you should also come. This is a local gem nestled away in San Leandro. I went for the plants, and discovered an oasis of peace in the middle of a bustling city. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. The layout reminds me of a zen garden. I just enjoyed walking around the paths and felt so much calm and serenity even as people were moving about. I recommend a visit not just for the plants, but for your mental health. This has been a tough 18 months with a world wide pandemic, and visiting this nursery is a little bit of tranquility in an otherwise crazy world.
