They wrote everything down and gave a firm quote for the job. We scheduled the work to take place a few weeks later on a day that worked for me. They arrived on schedule that morning, bringing a crew of (I believe) 5 people. I heard them talking to eachother as they were up in the trees and in the lift bucket, giving guidance to eachother based on what they each saw from different angles. I felt they were very concerned for the safety of the crew and for making sure they got the right limbs and brought them down without damage to surrounding plants and structures (or windows!). They were very thorough. At the end of the day, they cleaned up completely, leaving our property cleaner than when they got here. They even used their blower to clean all the old leaves off a balcony below where they had been working, even though most of those leaves had been there for months. They also did a walk-through with me to go over everything they did. At that point, Dave noticed one more high branch that he thought they should quickly take down (he said "because if it were my house, it would bug me to see that branch there every day"), so he had one of his guys do so. We couldn't be more pleased with Dave and his crew. Very reliable and trustworthy. We will be using them again.

They contacted me within 24 hours and setup an appointment for someone to come out and write a quote. I emailed several other tree care companies, but none responded. -A few days after getting the quote I called to schedule the tree removal. I was initially surprised that I'd have a wait a few weeks for them to come out again, but I now know that they are usually booked out for a few weeks. These guys stay busy because they are that good. I was told that someone would come out in a few days to paint a circle on the ground around the tree so that the utility companies (PG&E, AT&T, etc.) would know which tree was being removed and where they should mark the ground around their buried utilities. -A few days later the tree was marked. Over the next few days the utility companies marked the ground showing where electrical, gas, water, phone, and cable was buried near the tree. I'm not sure if this is a legal requirement since the last tree care company I used didn't bother, but the buried utilities turned out to be very close to the tree and I like the idea of having it removed safely without a stump grinder knocking out my power/phone/gas water. -Several days before the tree was to be removed I got call from Golden State Tree Care saying they had some schedule changes and asking if they could come a few days before the original date. I said yes, but they made it clear that the original date was good as well. -When they came to remove the tree they were very quick and professional. It was a large tree and they were here for less than an hour. They did an excellent job grinding the stump below the surface, leveling out the ground where the tree used to, and cleaned everything up afterwards.

We contacted Mr. Lyons and arranged for him to inspect our property and provide an estimate for several tree-trimming projects. He came to our home, walked through the work we wanted completed, and quoted a day rate of $2,500. During that meeting, he explained that after his crew completed work at our neighbor's property, they could trim a few branches on trees near our house while they were already in the area and then return later to complete the remainder of the project. Based on our discussion, we left with the impression that everything was proceeding as planned. We asked him to send us a written contract or proposal for the work. He agreed, but we never received one, nor did he contact us. Later, our neighbor told us that Mr. Lyons would be working at his property on the following Tuesday. Since we still had not received the promised contract or heard from him, we called Mr. Lyons that morning to discuss the project. He said he was in the area and would stop by. About an hour later, while his crew was working next door, Mr. Lyons knocked on our door and informed us that his crew was already trimming trees on our property. This came as a complete surprise because we had never authorized any work, signed a contract, or agreed on the scope or price for that portion of the job. When I inspected the work with him, I found that approximately 10-15 small-to-medium branches, approximately 1/2-4 inches in diameter, had been removed from a single oak tree. In my opinion, the cuts were not made as cleanly as I expected, and because the bucket truck was already positioned immediately adjacent to our property while working next door, and did not need to be moved, the work appeared to require less than 30 minutes of labor, including hauling the branches to the chipper. I asked what he intended to charge. He quoted $250 and said he expected payment that day. I asked whether that amount could instead be applied toward the larger project we had previously discussed, but he said it would not. We then discussed the remaining work, scheduling, and the written contract we had originally requested. Mr. Lyons told us he finalized his schedule on Sundays and would contact us afterward with a contract. That was the last communication we received, and we've heard nothing more from Lyon's Tree Service. Based on our experience, we were disappointed by several aspects of this transaction. Work began on our property before we had authorized it or signed a contract, the $250 charge for approximately 30 minutes of work seemed disproportionate, particularly since the crew and equipment were already on site working at our neighbor's property, and no additional travel or setup appeared to be required, and the promised follow-up regarding the remainder of the project never occurred. Had Mr. Lyons simply informed us that he was either unable or not inclined to take on the larger job, we would have appreciated the courtesy and honesty. A professional businessman would do this. Professional communication and clear agreements are essential when hiring a contractor. Unfortunately, we did not experience either in this case, and for that reason we cannot recommend this company.

They had to figure out how to take down a tree that was over a propane tank and did it very carefully as they worked together to get the tree cut. The other tree was about 75 ft tall and we wanted it to fall in a certain place as not to fall on the street or driveway, they were careful and got it done perfectly. We had fun creating a nice design and planting lots of awesome trees and bushes. Fast forward 17 years and all those little trees and bushes are fully mature. One of our trees is an olive tree. It was fun to watch it grow; however, one of its limbs shot up faster than the rest of the tree to over 20 feet tall. It was also growing over the fence into my neighbors yard. About five weeks ago, Sacramento saw some of the highest winds in recent history. The maximum recorded speed was 65 mph. That was enough to completely blow our backyard wood fence completely to the ground. With the fence down, I took the opportunity to do some major trimming of the backyard trees and plants. The olive tree, however, was just too high for me to feel comfortable about climbing up and trimming. I decided it was time to call a tree service. But which one? Yelp to the rescue! I did a search for tree cutting services in our area. It was pretty cool. Yelp found tree trimming companies and gave me the option to request quotes. So that's what I did. Four companies began correspondence through Yelp almost immediately. Christian, owner of Spartan Tree Service, was the first to make an appointment with me. He showed up at our place in less than an hour and gave me a quote. I was happy with the quote that included hauling off the debris, so we set up an appointment for him to come back later in the afternoon. Christian showed up at the appointed time with his 30 foot boom and tree cutting and disposal equipment.
