Kudos to John C. for this quick cocktail pit stop. The Evil Eye is a super laid back cocktail bar that looks and smells like an old library. Weathered, cozy and oddly familiar. There's no beer or wine served here that I saw, it's strictly a cocktail bar. The drinks here run the gambit of basic to extra. We hit both ends of the spectrum. I was told to order the peanut butter cocktail, which for the life of me I can't remember the name, and it was delicious. Just imagine a liquified Payday Bar and you have the flavor profile. Drink this quick because after it sits for a bit the flavor changes and it becomes odd for lack of a better term. I also tried their Smoked Paloma which is mezcal, grapefruit, amaro, agave, salt, and soda. I have become a Mezcal fan in the last year and this was by far my fav drink of the night. It would be my go to if I lived in the neighborhood. The bartenders here were awesome considering we came in thirteen deep and all ordered different drinks. I was really excited to check out Evil Eye, but didn't meet the high expectations I had. Overall a good spot, but has to be the vibe you're looking for. We came for happy hour time frame, was very quiet, which can be ideal for some, but not necessarily the vibe we were going for. The deviled eggs were unique, but pretty tasty and the fries had a solid seasoning. The condiments that came with the fries were pretty light for the amount of food, so be sure to ask for extra mayo/ketchup to start. Both the drunken sailor and limeade were good but at the price point, we decided to move to another bar in the area. read more

OMG - I wish this place had been around when I lived in the neighborhood because I would have been there. Every. DAY. Went in at 5pm opening on a very rainy Friday. Didn't get to taste the menu but can vouch for the mixologists, or more like cocktail wizards. And the glass ware is to die for - all vintage and varied as though someone broke out their personal collection from the 30s through the 70s. I got a Ketel martini and it was perfect - you don't always get those little ice flecks which is KEY to a good martini. Also tried the Sazerac (bomb) and their Gin & Tonic with fresh herbs. All the drinks are fresh fresh FRESH and botanically enchanting. They have one pool table which was quite popular. The music was Spotify's wild ride starting with Bauhaus and then a goth wave that was personally reminiscent of the pretty strong Goth scene in the city in the 90s (it's still going but man, that was a sweet decade for SF shoe-gazers... I digress). The ambiance was gorgeous and lush - darkly painted walls, big open space, large mirrors with gold frames, super cozy couches, chairs and booths. Also love that they have outdoor seating in the front so you can sip and watch the city roll by. The whole place just has a mood to it that makes you want to hunker in and soak in the elegance. It's in a pretty busy part of the Mission so parking can be a challenge, but it's also close to BART. Can't wait to go back with more time to lounge! read more

I'm so happy that Evil Eye made it through the pandemic lockdown. This was one of the first bars we went to when things started opening back up, and while the quality of some places (understandably) went down, Evil Eye's stayed strong. They took care in their food and cocktail details in such a crazy time. The cocktails are outstanding! I love the Smoked Paloma and Spiked Basil Limeade. Although a bit pricey, the food is not typical bar food. The chicken wings/tenders are really light and tasty. The Pimenton fries are seasoned just right and come with a slightly spiced ketchup and garlic aioli. Love them both! They used to serve these big bowls of seasoned popcorn. An amazing bar on the outer edges of the Mission. The decor will immediately catch your eye with several comfy couches, eclectic light fixtures, and unique art. It's cozy and eccentric, like your crazy great-aunt's place. The cocktails are delicious, and I especially liked the Sky Juice - gin, cachaça, coconut cream, falernum, basil, lime, orange. If you're with a small group or going solo, sit at the bar and chat up the bartenders. They may let you taste drinks that could be on future menus. It's a bar so the cocktails better be good, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the food was also stellar! We had the Deviled Eggs and Kale Salad - all classically good. TL;DR - top 3 favorite bars in the city for me I've lived close by to this place for years and when I was single it was my first date spot! Now, I go with my husband and friends for drinks, food, and pool. Not the same as I used to party but still quite good. I love that there's always tons of seating, and because of the way the furniture is arranged in the back, it's still quite roomy. All the drinks here are good. You won't find a miss. There are beers on draft, or in cans too. I love that they have delicious non alcohol drinks too. I had their basil limeonade and it was fantastic. For food, you can't go wrong with fries. We also had their pork tacos, and I'm obsessed with the tortilla they use. I also ate their cauliflower side dish. It was ok... I'd skip it next time. Don't forget to do a photo booth pic! read more

How have I not tried this place all these years!? All the dishes that we ordered were flavorful, had good texture, and was just oh-so-delicious. We received a gift certificate to this place from our neighbors, so decided to order take out. We only picked up, so I didn't get to see how the inside is set up. The Burger: The patty was well seasoned and good quality tasting meat. Combined with the bacon, cheese, veggies, and sauce, the flavors and textures all worked well together. Fries were extra crunchy (yum!). Sweet Potato Bravas: I like the contrast of textures between the soft sweet potatoes and the crunchy seeds, and the chimichurri aioli complemented the dish so well. Brussel sprouts: Just yum! The flavors worked so well together. Kale salad: Again, flavor was on point. Only thing which is more of a preference is that I would have preferred a softer kale. This is my kind of place. The ambiance is so on point. It's boho with an edge. I couldn't stop gushing about how impressed I was by the vibe and interior here. I loved the decor, the front windows, the comfortable chairs and booths throughout, and of course the warm crowd and bartenders. The drinks are all creatively crafted and served in lovely drinkware. And though we had already eaten and didn't get a chance to try any of their food - their light bar bites menu sounded fantastic. You can't go wrong with this place - if you're looking for a roomy place to catch up with co-workers or friends. A girlfriend and I went to Evil Eye for a going away party. I guess the party didn't start until 6:30pm, but we arrived early on Friday, December 15th around 5:45pm. It turned out they reserved a table in the back, but since we didn't know, we started off at the table in the front by the bar. *DRUNKEN SAILOR: coconut-infused bourbon, white rum, grapefruit, falernum, cinnamon syrup, lemon ($11) *MANHATTAN: rye, carpano antica, bitters, orange ($11) *PORK BELLY SLIDERS: rock shrimp, house made kimchi, scallions, gochujang ($9) We began with the above for the 30 or so mins we were here by ourselves. I got the Manhattan. It was nicely balanced. I wasn't trying to drink too much at first since our holiday party was the night before, so this was a good sipping cocktail. We decided to get the sliders to split. They were a nice snack to start the evening. *GRANDAD'S SPECIAL: rye, oloroso sherry, coffee, salted cacao, chili, bitters ($12) *PUNCH #3: rye, lemon, spice, sherry, ginger ($50) *BAR NUTS: warm mixed nuts with a blend of spices ($7) *POPCORN: with savory furikake ($5) Once everyone started arriving, the going away girl ordered a punch bowl and snacks for the table. This place is highly legitimate. Their drinks are okay but what makes it stand out is the amazing food that in my view merits a Michelin star. Their dishes are served tapas style - they look great, taste even better, come in generous portions for tapas standards, are super unique, and are inexpensive for SF. Some examples of really good dishes include the sweet potato patatas bravas (made with Japanese yams!) and the fried chicken wing bites. This place is legit underrated from a food perspective. This bar is definitely on the dark and moody side, with low lighting and fancy cocktails. There's a bit of bar seating scattered throughout the venue, as well as lounge chairs in the far back. This spot also hosts a pool table and a photo booth to make your experience extra memorable. The drinks are what make Evil Eye stand out - the bartender has an incredibly heavy pour! I ordered the Mai Tai, which was deliciously prepared with aged rum, lime, orgeat, and dry curaçao for $12. This is such a fun place to be, and I love how festive it is right now with the Christmas decorations. My friend and I spent two to three hours here just chatting by the bar, and we got to sample some delicious drinks. I had the Milk Punch, which was a clear drink that tasted creamy (???) and some other cocktail whose name has long gone from my mind... There's a lounge area with comfy-looking chairs and seating along the bar, along with some outdoor seats. My friend and I also ordered the fried chicken wings, and those were super interesting - the batter is actually crumbly and not like what you'd expect from a typical fried chicken. This is such a cool cocktail bar in the Mission area of San Francisco. We popped in here for an after dinner drink and it was just what we were craving! Their cocktails are super unique with gorgeous glassware suitable to each cocktail. I love the comfortable furniture, dark atmosphere, and all around cozy vibes. Thanks to a super hip, but not hipster colleague/friend of mine who introduced this super cool place to me. Met up for a happy hour, and this place was nothing but great surprises. Found a place to sit towards the back of the bar, on the super comfy couches. The exterior looks like a dive bar (as many in the Mission are), but the inside was anything but. The interior was dark and sexy, but not pretentious and stuffy. The back display wall had windows galore, like straight from an art gallery or something. And there was even a video and pinball machine (old school and pre-millenial-hollah)! The cocktail menu had interesting combinations and flavor profiles, and they do have awesome classic cocktails and modern takes of classics as well. We tried a few yummy eats, furikake popcorn and fries. Both are winners in my book! Please use the bathrooms when you are at the Evil Eye, as they are something out of a first class hotel or something. I've never ever seen a bathroom so nice, clean, with a newly lit candle. I love how they use reuseable metal straws instead of the paper ones which get super soggy and squishy. Also one of the cleanest bar bathrooms I've been to. I won't bore you with the shocking details of how our evening and reunion of 10 old friends was destroyed by the staff, the bartenders and specifically our horridly insulting server Kat, but just imagine the most appalling Saturday Night Live skit of the WORST service possible and you'll only scratch the surface of what our sober and polite group of adults experienced. I WOULD SUGGEST GOING ANYWHERE OTHER THAN THIS PLACE TO SPEND YOUR TIME AND MONEY. Every staff member, from the front door to the bar, from the servers to managers, should be fired and the owners should start over. And, if this behavior starts with the owners, they should consider selling the bar to a team that understands what these owners clearly don't. read more

When I first heard about Evil Eye, I thought what a strange name for a bar. The phrase: Evil Eye gives me the heebie jeebies because my mom always gave me the evil eye for no reason at all. Her evil eye was so strong, I could feel it penetrate through her bug eye shades and Darth Vader visor as she rolled through in her little Corolla. I read the owners named their bar Evil Eye as a sign of good luck and the pictures of the retro-funk vibe with lots of plushy sofas really drew me in. It looked like a great place to chill over some cocktails and bar bites so my friend and I met up for happy hour during their opening week (several weeks ago). I found parking early so decided to wait inside for my friend. Upon arrival, I got the once over look by the bartender which was a bit unwelcoming. We decided to sit in the lounge area where the female server was much nicer. Evil Eye has a good variety of cocktails on their menu (18 kinds) ranging from $9-$12 but since we planned on being there for a while, we ordered one of their punch bowls. We ordered the Punch Bowl #1: Gin, cucumber, lime, absinthe ($50 + $10 upgrade to Hendrick's). Such a transformation from the stark space and the awful pepto-bismol walls that previously housed Coco Frio. Not sure if I would return to Evil Eye as I read several disconcerting reviews where SF natives weren't treated well by the bartender. I was born and raised in SF and I'm all for gentrification (to an extent) but when you start alienating SF natives (specifically from The Mission where your business is located in)...not cool. I hope they better train their staff, i.e. bartender so this one person does not poorly reflect on the entire business. read more

Stumbled upon Evil Eye today as my partner and I wandered around the Mission. The name and quick peak inside both intrigued us, and a quick search on yelp suggested we'd enjoy the drinks. So in we went! The interior is dark, but there's a very welcoming vibe inside. The bar and back of the bar is all wood, feeling like it's been there for a long time. In the front and back of the bar, there are also several comfy chairs and sofas, along with a pool table and a photo booth (yes!) The drink menu is very extensive, with a couple pages worth of house-concoctions, and a page of classics. The classics have many tiki-favorites (mai thai and zombie), but the house-made drinks also had some standouts like the drunken sailor (which my partner really enjoyed). I wasn't feeling like a cocktail, so I opted for a beer. Because this is a cocktail bar, the beer menu is very small, just a few beers on tap and in cans/bottles. However, enough styles are represented that you could probably satisfy most casual tastes. Evil eye also has a small food menu, which we didn't order from, both because we were grabbing dinner later but also because there wasn't an explicit focus on vegan options. They did have a section labeled "produce", which was true to the name in these plates being veggie-centric, but it was unclear which might be vegan (or could be made vegan), if any. This isn't an unusual situation for an SF bar, so no points off here, though I always hope I'll be surprised. Nonetheless, really enjoyed the atmosphere and would definitely come back on a quiet afternoon/evening. Being the Mission, I'm sure it gets big crowds on Friday and Saturday nights, but it was nice and chill on a Sunday evening before dinner. read more
