This is the restaurant in the lobby of our Westin hotel. It was a modern bright, beautiful room with walls of floor to ceiling windows, and a view of the marina. Our complementary breakfast is served here, each morning. We had a waitress serving us our coffee and drinks, we went up to the buffet. My table enjoyed their steaks but I had the duck flatbread and I wasn't ready for small chunks of duck and mandarin oranges from the can. It was ok but not what I expected at this caliber of place. This was our first visit and we were pretty excited. The restaurant wasn't as busy as we expected, but it is the off season. We had all looked over the menu online so once my wife got some questions answered we were ready to go. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time and we had a relaxing and pleasant meal. For dinner I had their Seafood Risotto, a nice creamy mixture with large pieces of seafood. There were very fresh pieces of shrimp, scallops a little chewy, and a few pieces of lobster, along with other stuff. The dish was great, I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Located inside the Westin Hotel, EVOQ (pronounced Evoke) is a breakfast and dinner restaurant with a modern feel. The restaurant is on the lobby floor, but that floor is actually higher than ground level, so when you look out the window to watch traffic on US41 you are perched higher. I liked that perspective. I should mention they do not have self parking if you are not staying at the hotel but the valet parking is free if you get your ticket stamped by the restaurant. Staying at the Westin, this is their restaurant hotel. Some hotel restaurants can be very good and some can be very bad, this probably falls in the upper half. On a very rainy morning its location in the hotel was very convenient as we didn't want to brave the elements. We stayed in for breakfast. Like the rest of the hotel, the restaurant is clean, bright and modern. It wasn't very busy so we were seated right away in a spacious comfortable booth. The staff were pleasant and quick with the orders, it was breakfast so how long does it take. My wife got the continental which is complimentary, pastries, fruit, yogurt scrambled eggs, toast but she got sides of hash browns and sausage. I got the Cuban breakfast sandwich, when in Rome, it was okay though I'd much rather have stuck with toast, eggs over easy, bacon, and hash browns. I have to add that the hash browns were stellar, really, most places over cook it, these were perfectly crispy and soft inside. Their dinner menu, though small looked very interesting. Though it's a beautiful ocean side town, I don't see myself going back to Sarasota (went for a wedding), but if I am I'd try their dinner. Better than average hotel restaurant. read more

Great start to my morning! This was not at all a typical hotel restaurant breakfast. There was a continental buffet available that was more typical for a hotel but I opted for ordering off the menu. The coffee was a smooth dark roast that was nice and strong. So happy with my selection of Avocado Toast with a poached egg and hash browns plus a mango/spinach/cilantro juice. The food was fresh and delicious. I enjoyed the ambiance and found it to be relaxing. Pricing is customary for a nice resort restaurant. Depending on what you order, it is not the quickest but they give you plenty of notice as the food is made fresh. The wait ended up being much less than anticipated. Bottom Line: Not worthy of a special trip but adequate for hotel guests. If I was living or staying in Sarasota I would not go out of my way to go to Evoq. The hassle of valet parking and prices probably aren't worth it. But, as a hotel guest I found it adequate. The restaurant is small-ish with a mix of tables and booth. They also have a bar. The decor is pretty and the seating is comfortable although some tables seemed a little close together. As far as the food goes, I only had breakfast at Evoq. Both days I got the breakfast buffet and had coffee, eggs, sausage and fruit. I enjoyed my food but I don't think it was worth the $20. (Fortunately mine was comped as a SPG Platinum member.) I am usually not a big fan of hotel restaurants but this one is well deserving of the 5 stars. Our waiter Gregory, I would highly recommend asking for him, was extremely attentive and anticipated what we needed. Everyone was so friendly and the manager Tony came over and asked if there was anything we needed and wished my wife a Happy Birthday. Now the food. One of the must have is the candied bacon, so worth the calories. The mahi mahi tacos are amazing!!! My wife had the blackened grouper, she thought it was the beat she ever had. We were staying at the Westin for our anniversary and for our second and last night we tried to find a restaurant with the right ambience. We went up and down the entire Main Street and then took an Uber to St Armand's. Both attempts completely failed as everywhere was packed busy and loud. So we came back to the hotel and sat for dinner at Evoq at a totally perfect table by the windows. It took them a bit to come to us but once they did our waitresses was great! Disappointing. We have stayed at the Westin two years in a row now. Last year I remember the service being extremely slow. I stopped in for breakfast this morning and was made aware that they had no interest in serving one more person (it was 9:30 am). Every spot at the bar and open table had dirty dishes and there was a manager that was walking around not doing a thing. I stood in front of him for 10+ minutes without anyone acknowledging me. The only good thing about EVOQ - decorations. We made a reservation a week in advance but when we arrived, they didn't have our information. Luckily (or not?), the place was empty and we were seated immediately. I wanted to try a unique dish and there was only one APPETIZER that attracted my attention - Yellowfin tuna with smoked avocado (never heard of smoked one). However, it was the only thing they didn't have. Then, I went to Entrees and chose the most expensive item - Lobster Pot Pie with truffle sauce. Truffle sauce is always my #1 choice because it's always incredible. They managed to surprise me. The meal was presented terribly as if someone threw all the inner components of a pot pie on the plate: randomly placed peas, carrots and lobster (not cooked well). BUT the most disappointing part was "truffle sauce" - I didn't taste truffle at all and the sauce reminded me of that super disgusting cheap gravy they serve in some school cafeterias. I couldn't finish it because of how disgusting the taste was, neither I was willing to order a dessert or anything else. ( My friend ordered sticky salmon and it was OK - oversalted though and served with good fried rice which is same as in any Chinese buffet). The only good dish was barley risotto - that's why I gave them 1 star. Price definitely doesn't match the quality. Restaurants should exude hospitality and welcome you to their establishment. I had booked a reservation for four people about 1 week from my dining date. I even called the evening before to confirm my reservation.I was greeted rudely by the hostess, I believe her name was April. When I first checked in, she said she did not have my name in the reservations and they were only serving hotel guests at the moment: the place was empty and I had a reservation booked a week in advance for my birthday, so I don't know what she was talking about by saying they only were serving hotel guests. She was unaccommodating and unfriendly. The waiter Sashin was excellent and food was good, but her unpleasant demeanor set a bad tone to the night for myself and my guests. I do not know who hired her to be a "manager" but anyone managing a restaurant of that caliber should know that being hospitable to diners is rule 101. I hate to write a negative review when the waiter and food was good, but she soured the 'overall' experience and I only write the review as constructive criticism as I hope this can become one the great restaurants in Sarasota. The hostess is the diners first contact and a restaurant of this caliber should welcome new guests, especially ones with a reservation. read more

Even if you were staying at this hotel I would never recommend eating at EVOQ as there are so many other great restaurants within walking distance. Simply put, the food was sub-par and way overpriced for the quality and taste. The restaurant and bar were both 2/3 empty when we arrived on a Saturday evening which was a red flag right there. Adding insult to injury is having to pay $10 to valet your car to eat at the restaurant. Ridiculous, valet should be comped with your dinner bill. Dined at the bar as a guest staying in The hotel attached.. simply asked bartender Dustin if i could please order plain grilled salmon with veggies. He said yes. When the food arrived the fish on my plate was clearly not salmon. I asked Dustin if it was grouper he said "no it's salmon". I saw my check and saw that i was charged for the grouper and so i asked yet again, oh i think that was grouper because you charged me for it? His response was "because that's the only way to ring it in" then walked away. When the issue was confronted, he lied to the manager saying i ordered grouper. Over all, the bartender is a liar and unknowlagable about the menu/ computer system.. that or just ignorant when it comes to hospitality and customer service. Coming from someone in the industry there were plenty of opportunities to fix or appropriately handle the easily fixable situation instead of trying to covering his tracks. Steps of service absolutely need to be addressed especially with how nice the hotel attached is. it was a very poor representation of the hotel and restaurant all together.
