I agree with others that the sweetness is subtle, not overpowering. The not-so-good: It's definitely spendy. My smaller-than-typical tray (five pieces) was $9. I'd be OK with this if I knew they were using really great ingredients, but I saw that listed nowhere, and judging by the looks of the place, they were not. Mom 'n' pop stores: I arrived at 8am (the listed opening time) because other reviewers note that they sell out early. They were indeed open, but the owner was clearly flabbergasted that I'd arrive early. "8am is the opening time, but I don't have anything available until 10am." Also, no prices are listed on the menu. If you are not like me, this may not bother you. But if you are like me, I'll not return to this bakery unless I'm in the area and it's 10am. The availability depends on the day, so don't expect to find the cake you like even if it's on the menu. Sometimes they run out of them as well. So keep that in mind. Finally, make sure to refrigerate the cakes if you don't eat them right away as they turn stale overnight because they don't have preservatives. Overall I liked this place a lot. Coming from a Korean person, EWHA is legit. It is the most amazing rice cakes I have ever had in my life. I have even had Korean people try this and claim it is better than places they've tried in Korea. They won't have much selection if you drop by, even as soon as they open. Just call and pre-order and pick up for a later date. It is pricier than the usual rice cake, and if you can't tell a difference between good and bad rice cakes - might not be worth the splurge. But for me, worth every penny. I always find myself asking if it is worth it on the way there, then devouring every piece and reminding myself why it's worth it every time. I am a part-time dduk (korean rice cake) connoisseur and I have yet to meet a person that loves dduk and knows dduk (on a consumer level) as much as I do. I've tried all the well-known, amazing dduks in the motherland (S. Korea)!! The quality (texture, taste) of Ehwa Dang's rice cakes are really really good (even though they are $$$). I love that their rice cakes are not that sweet which may not be a plus to those who have a sweeter palate. I am so grateful that a place like Ehwa Dang exists in the states! I've tried their ssuk (mugwort) songpyeon, strawberry and pumpkin (kabocha) sulgi's, duteopdduk (a traditional 'royal court' dduk), and others that I have sampled in the store. I was really pleased with the textures of all of them!! NEVER refrigerate dduk. As someone who has stored and eaten dduk regularly for the past many years, this one rule is un-negotiable! It's like saying refrigerate your artisan country bread (a big no-no). Either eat it or freeze it. Dduk-makers would wholeheartedly agree. I usually individual-pack the dduck in saran wrap or ziploc bags and stick them in the freezer the same day that I buy them. If you defrost dduk properly (either by leaving it out at room temp or ever-so-slightly heating it up properly; the defrosting method differs for different types of dduk and how long the dduk has been in the freezer..), it will sometimes tastes better than the day you bought it. If you love korean rice cakes and appreciate the lower sweetness profile - as do older korean folks - you will absolutely love and appreciate Ehwa Dang. And if you've eaten a lot of dduk before, you will know that this place serves very high quality dduk. Ehwa Dang is most certainly the best korean rice cake in the area and one of the best in the West Coast including LA (I've basically tried everything that exists in LA; they have pretty good dduk too!). read more

The BEST Traditional Korean rice cake bakery in town! There's several others in town but hands down it can not beat the ingredients or the taste this bakery has to offer! It is a bit pricey but you pay for the quality and not the quantity like you would at other rice cake bakeries. You can absolutely taste the high quality with the rice cakes from here and it is very delicious! Tip: You can individually wrap and freeze leftover and take out to thaw... Once thawed, pop into microwave for about 10 seconds only so it doesn't turn hard (wrapped) and it's good to eat again! I really do not mind spending the money for these rice cakes at all! This was an impulsive food shopping, after eating at the neighboring Kunjip restaurant, we wanted to walk around a bit and saw this tiny shop (in the very same plaza) that specialized in sweet Korean rice cake. It was 100 days celebration event for my grandson. My daughter spent a couple of hours to make the stencil to put on the rice cake and had ordered rice cakes () with the size of 3"x3"x2". My daughter called them twice to make sure and they said they will call back with the estimate. There was no call back and the rice cakes came out as 2.5"x2.5" which was useless. I have returned it, but never heard any apology from them, instead they claimed that it was mutual misunderstanding. I don't understand which part we had misunderstood. Btw, when my sister-in-law had visited here from Toronto, she had ordered some rice cakes but when she returned back and open the box, she found that some rice cakes from the previous day were mixed. I can't believe I've never been here! The owner is super nice and speaks English. I called in to see if she was open during Covid and they are! I asked what time she closes and she said 3 but they usually run out around 12. So I just stopped by around 11:00. She also said they're closed Sunday and Monday. Door is open so there's fewer touch points for safety. The rice cake is dense and chewy, not too sweet and very flavorful! I got the strawberry and one of the traditional Korean ones. Since the meal over at Kunjip wasn't completely filling we walked into this bakery for dessert. Had a pretty good black sesame rice cake for the ride back to the office. The one lady there was very friendly and she offered samples for everything they had. I like their dduk, but they're SO expensive for the amount that you buy. The dduk is definitely fresh, because I think they make it when you pre-order and then some for walk-ins. I remember that they only had 2-3 kinds when I went there to purchase one afternoon. My husband and I loved every morsel, but we only had few pieces. I would recommend getting dduk at supermarkets (Hangook, Super Kyopo, Galleria) if you want dduk at good value. I really want to give this place more stars, but they're just SO expensive compared to the supermarkets that have dduk also locally made (Seoul Bakery down the street). read more

Maybe I got the wrong idea from other Yelp reviews. I love rice cakes and the pictures on Yelp were looking so good, I was determined to visit the store. It was surprisingly small and set up in a way that doesn't look like a bakery. I was there around 2-3pm, there were only a few items left on a tiny counter, and very pricey. After spending $15 on two small boxes of rice cakes, I was expecting something really good. Noop, one mochi like cake wasn't soft, wasn't chewy, it tasted weird. After a day, it was hard and I didn't know what to do with it. The other box was a bit better, taste like rice cake but nothing special.
