First time here seated quickly, approached by two different staff members asking did I need anything, was I ready to order or did I need longer. The waitress offered suggestions based on my questions. Have no complaints. Nice friendly staff. I wasn't very hungry today so I ordered a French onion soup- it was very good. They have a homemade bread bar that I was able to get fresh bread with my soup and all the breads were really. The only thing I would say was average was my coconut cake. It was tasty but the cake was too dry and a touch too sweet, but I ate it anyway. I would definitely eat here again. I previously left a 5 star review about this place and its amazing turkey sandwich. Sadly, I am updating my review after a bad experience. I have eaten my turkey sandwich with bacon MANY times. I know how it should look taste, and what should be with it. yesterday I ordered my sandwich for takeout and was surprised to see it had very little turkey on it. Two pieces does not make a turkey sandwich. Plus, I was not asked if I wanted to have potato chips, which comes with it, or French fries, which is an additional cost. I went back into the restaurant to tell the man behind the register who assured me that my sandwich had the correct amount of meat on it. I said it didn't and I have brought many people here because the sandwich was filled with turkey. He said all sandwich meat sandwiches have the same portion. I asked him if he looked at my sandwich and he said yes and it was correct. I said it was not the same and began to wonder why someone would argue with a regular customer about something she orders all the time. Then he said "as a courtesy" he would put more turkey on it, which he did. It then looked like a normal sandwich. I felt the "courtesy" comment was a strange one and was equivalent to saying ,"you're wrong, but we'll just shut you up." So, I called later that evening to discuss this, thinking I would talk about the inconsistency of the execution with a manager. Well, I was SHOCKED to learn this man was the owner!!!!!!! Obviously, the owner doesn't know what's going on in his kitchen when he isn't there. There is an obvious skimping of portions when he is there. I left my number in case he wanted to discuss it with me, which I think if he cared about his customers, he would have. Alas, no phone call, which I think sums up his lack of concern about customers. Plus, he should have know what items come with a sandwich. He has lost me as a customer, as well as my friends and family I brought there. Hope his "courtesy" was worth it. This restaurant needs to be educated on allergies. I usually don't post bad reviews but this is one of those times where I feel very upset after visiting a restaurant. I don't think they understand that someone can get VERY sick and to respect that, and not shame those with allergies when they make mistakes with orders. I am gluten and dairy free, but I often just get a salad with grilled chicken if I cannot have anything else. I ordered this, made sure to tell the waitress that I could not have croutons or anything with dairy like cheese or parm. Mistakes happen and that's totally understandable-what I didn't appreciate was the rude behavior and disrespect from the waitress when told croutons were in my salad she told the cook not to but he put them in anyways. I asked about the dressing I received if it had dairy in it, and after her being frustrated about asking the kitchen in the first place, she came back & said the cook said "it should be." Which means the ingredients were not even checked. I did not eat it. The waitress (whom of which told us she had been doing this for 40+ years) was very rude to another guest with us, she ordered the Rachel and got a Reuben instead. The waitress snapped at her when she asked her a question as well. After I received my salad with croutons (which will make me very sick if I eat) she gave me a bowl to put them in to take them out. I would have done that myself onto a napkin or something if that was my intention. Gluten-intolerant folks can't have cross-contamination, so when I told her I still can't have it, she rolled her eyes and brought it back to the cook, then very quickly brought it back out. I am now doubled over in pain, because I can imagine that they just took it out of the salad and brought out the same exact thing as before. The chicken was red in some areas as well, and the tomatoes were old and tasted rotten. The waitress apologized several times to me after "about the salad," which is okay and respectable, but her demeanor before hand was not okay, and she probably realized that. I don't know what she is going through and try not to be quick to judge, but I really had to say something because this is unacceptable. There was a gentleman who brought over desserts to others who was funny and kind, he was very "out there" but made us smile. I would like to point him out because he deserves recognition and should not be included in this. This review would have been avoided if we were just treated with kindness, compassion, and respect. Im going to be honest their food here is pretty bad. Only good food you could get is maybe pancakes, but only on a good day. Theres been multiple times where I have tried to order iced coffee, and I swear they literally just handed me hot coffee with water in it. Exeter Family Restaurant has entered our regular rotation in the past couple of years. Years ago, when it was called Manny's the food was hit or miss, but since a remodel and name change, the food has been outstanding. I like to rate places based on their niche and how they compare to competitor (meaning both Morimoto and a sandwich shop can both achieve 5 stars) I like to say it's a couple of notches above diner food. Anyone who goes skips this place for something like applebee's really does not know what they are missing. On top of that, EFM might be the cleanest place you'll ever find. A couple of slight weak points - the service is generally quite good, but once in a while, we are stuck with a did of a waitress, who seems to disappear for long periods of time when I have an empty soda glass. Also, while the soups are good, they are not great and lack variety - seems like the same 3-4 recipes in rotation without any creativity. Other then those items, the only food dud I recall would be the fried chicken. These issues constitute enough problems to prevent 5 stars, but barely. On the other hand, EFM has a number of dishes that satisfy the aspiring foodie and should warrant your attention as outstanding examples of that particular dish. Specifically the Jamaican Jerk ribs are tender, sweet, and spicy. The cabbage rolls (halupki) will blow you away, mostly because of the home-made tomato sauce, which they also use for many of their pasta dishes. The roast beef also rocks, as do the onion rings and fried green beans. You almost can't go wrong at EFM, it's kid friendly, has a huge menu, and good prices. read more

I have no idea where to start with this review, but this place deserves all of the "best of berks" awards FOR SURE. I love the outside of the diner and the fact they have a separate dining area to open when it gets busy! The servers are always down to earth, personable, and very accommodating even when they have multiple tables and the place is a madhouse! I love this diner so much! Of course, it isn't a five star fancy restaurant but it is a GREAT diner. All of the waitresses have their own personalities which, in my opinion, is what every great restaurant needs in order to create a true relaxing atmosphere. Every time my mom and I come here, we are never disappointed. If something on the salad bar is low or cold, they gladly refill or replace it for you. My mother gets salmon, crab cakes, or shrimp and cheese tortellini. She loves everything and it's always made the way you suggest it (ie. No butter). My go to meal here are the pancakes. SO good. The seasonal fall pumpkin pancakes with chocolate chips are my favorite. They even come with cinnamon butter! And the diner offers sugar free syrup, as well, to offset the chocolate chips ;) The last time I went they baked the bananas into the pancakes instead of slicing them on top. LOVED them this way. I hope they keep it up!! The only thing I wish is they had more vegetarian options, like a homemade veggie burger or some unique salads or wraps! They are very accommodating and polite. Bathrooms and kitchen area are always clean. And you can even peak in the kitchen when the doors open to see how well kept it is inside! Good place to eat! read more

We had not been there for several months and were shocked at how many tables were open on a Saturday night (last time we went on a Saturday night there was a waiting list). We were seated immediately and that is where the good service ended. We sat for 15-20 minutes and nobody acknowledged we were there or took even a drink order. But we have been there for lunch a few times, last time we got the Mac and Cheese Croquettes, the Mac and cheese part was delicious, but the breading was a bit over cooked. But all in all, that is the only complaint I have after going about 10 times now. Food is delicious, customer service was terrific, and the prices are definitely fair!
