If I could I would rate lower than 1 star. I have been a loyal customer for years spending $80+ weekly. Last night we arrived with a party of 5. I was told, once again, that I could not have a real lemon slice with our ice tea, and would have to be charged extra if I needed it. This restaurant recently went to packaged lemon juice...horrible. There was no manager on duty to "approve" the lemon slice (UNREAL), and when I mentioned to our server that we would all be ordering seafood, so just bring us lemons for our dinner. I was then told by my server, who was rude to the extreme, that we would be charged $.30 for extra lemon. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? All of this for a slice of lemon??? Needless to say we all left. The food was excellent, semi-cheap $35 for my daughter and myself. I can't complain about the food nor the price. My waitress on the otherhand just seemed miserable maybe a crappy day from the higher ups? I'm unsure..she wasn't directly rude or giving me any attuitde in fact I left her a $10 tip because she was good at her job, just grumpy and having a bad day I could tell....leave that at the door. read more

Found this restaurant a couple of years ago, being new to the area. We have been coming back since day1, Blanca makes us feel welcomed, always a smile. great service. We look forward to the great service and good food, especially the French toast. Great idea offering the fruit instead of potatoes. The dinner menu is great too. Came here on the way home from an early morning drop off of family at Philadelphia international. My wife recommended it on the way down (she's originally from the area) and we stopped on the trip back. We were sat quickly by a woman on the phone who told us "sit over there near the windows." Ok cool, it's a diner and and I've been to plenty in my time. The server who was very attentive as friendly came quickly and took our drink order. An older threesome of a man and two women came in who were obviously regulars and she waived them to the booth next to ours. She then proceeded to very loudly talk about how her manager disrespected her on the floor after a customer complaint. She went into great detail about how a regular customer treated her like a servant when she didn't get a soda fast enough (evidently it took 15 minutes as she kept saying) Mine was brought out quickly. It was totally offensive and the food was below Denny's. My wife loved her chipped beef to be honest. Seriously if I want to hear employees complain about their job on the floor I'll go to a Denny's in a college town. Probably one of the top 5 worst "restaurant" experiences ever. read more

Wanted to try this place for a while, but was disappointed and won't be going back. The servers were friendly and the food was ok but overpriced. $7 for the kid's menu and salads for $11.00, with no meat. You could add chicken for another $5. Every time I go to the Exeter family restaurant I get the best service in a diner! The waitresses are all really friendly and the service is great. You get nice hot food the salad bar is wonderful and they have the best croutons for your salad! Try them out you won't regret it and the prices are reasonable as well read more

Walked into the diner with my significant other and once we finally got to the table, had our menus thrown in the table and the hostess just walked away without a word. We then proceeded to sit for over 15 minutes before we even were acknowledged and asked about drinks. The restaurant was no where near busy and others around us were starting to order before we even met our server. Amazing diner food! Real turkey in my Rachel sandwich, the brisket sandwich had meat right off the bone, my companion had a grilled cheese sandwich which he said was the best he ever had and he is 70 years old with a gourmet cook for a wife. Highly recommend! read more

Note, I didn't actually eat at Exeter, so this review doesn't reflect the food. The food could be absolutely fabulous for all I know. However, we also didn't really get much of a chance to try the food due to crap service (or rather the lack of ANY service). I did a cursory search for breakfast restaurants near our hotel and we decided on Exeter, as I was turned off by the reviews and menu of a higher-ranking breakfast spot (Tomkat - check out their comments on their menu about substitutions/omissions/additions - HUGE turnoff). We arrived at Exeter and it is a cool-looking, old-fashion diner-type building. It was fairly busy inside (around 10 AM) - BUT not busy enough for the fact that we were point blank ignored for about 10 minutes without a greeting, glance or any acknowledgement. Eesh. We stood around, looking stupidly at one another for about 10 minutes, "waiting to be seated" as the sign instructed. Elderly waitresses passed us without comment - however that gave us a chance to view the food from their trays. My husband was immediately turned off by their hash browns: those precooked frozen triangular patties. And I didn't think the rest of the food looked any grade above IHOP (definitely not worth the wait to be seated or being pointedly ignored). We overheard the cashier near the hostess station ask an older couple checking out how their food was, and they replied that the wife had gotten her order wrong (cheese on her sandwich when she had ordered it without) and the server didn't correct it, and that the husband got his corned beef hash 10 minutes after his eggs. The cashier's reply: "She must have been busy." That's all. Not even a half-assed apology, no reduction on their bill, nothing. Um, done. We left disgustedly (nobody took notice anyway). We asked the older couple where we should go since we were out-of-towners, they directed us to the Breakfast Hut (review later). read more

Xmas Eve, and it was pretty packed so maybe that had something to do with it. Overall pretty bad though. Older lady was our server...she was less than in the holiday spirit (still left her $10 on $45 though). Salad bar was large and decent. Free soups were a solid "just OK" and the free bread LOOKED awesome, and there was 3 varieties, but it was cold and dense. Did they bake a bunch and then put them in the freezer to serve later? Tasted that way. Ten bucks for a veal cutlet and one side. Woulda been fine if said veal was a real piece of meat. Instead it was the frozen veal McNugget variety of processed crap. Seriously lame, y'all. This is Berks County, home of more cows than humans, USE FRESH (and NOT PROCESSED) CUTS OF BEEF!?!!! Lima beans were solid, but served cold. Filling was solid. Mac N Cheese was really shells and cream. Not cool. Loved all the TVs. Great that it's open all night and has a ton of beers on tap....but...what kind of diner doesn't have pies and cakes out on the counter? I ALWAYS order 2 maybe 3 desserts at homestyle eateries but I was never offered any and didn't see any out, so...opportunity missed EFR. Won't be going back. Just go and enjoy. Tremendous menu selections to please anybody. Salad bar is one of the best I have ever seen with fresh baked bread and two soup selections and it is included in most items which are already reasonably priced!! There are not many diners in the area that can compete with this classic and authentic American diner foods. Nor are there many diners that have a full stocked bar at the counter to enjoy from. I am a personal fan of their breakfast selection, my all time favorite being the chocolate chip pancakes. They do not whimp out on their chocolate chips! Most places will only bother to put the chips in the middle, but not the diner! They make sure that your whole pancake has an equal distribution of chips to cake. I'm a definite fan! The diner has a wide selection of food options to choose from, as well as, a well stocked salad bar, 2 daily soup options, and a fresh bread station. There are many variations that you can choose from of each section of the menu that generally includes a side and soup. Although not always the freshest, the standards aren't generally set too high for it being a diner. The staff is very attentive and gets the food to your table in a very timely manner. They are also very good about making sure that you have a new drink or a refill before you cup is empty. I've never had to wait for a table at the diner as they have two very large spaces to accommodate parties of all sizes. read more

Always have a good experience here. The food is hit or miss. I only go for breakfast now and only get one thing. Farmers skillet. One time I was there and I just had a horrible experience with a buddy of mine. It took months for us to even want to try the place again. I've been coming here for a very long time. Stopped here for lunch on our way to the outlets In Pottstown. The gentleman who seated us, I'm guessing the owner, was very unfriendly. We waited quite awhile for a server. This is my Saturday night revisit. The stuffed cabbage was wonderful, as always. The Seafood bisque was replaced with a very very thick clam chowder. I only found potatoes in mine. The salad bar was good, as usual. My baked potato was small. The rice pudding was ordinary. I will try the pie on my next visit. Service was super fast and friendly. The salad bar is smaller, but has a nice selection. The daily specials were a nice list of offerings from the standard diner/family restaurant fare. I had a NY Strip which was cooked perfectly. I like my steak medium rare and struggle to get it cooked properly in local steakhouses, so this was a pleasant surprise as I was expecting it to be over-cooked as always. The only downside to it was it had zero seasoning which was unfortunate. A little salt and pepper or even just a light dash of pepper through grilling goes a long way. While traveling on vacation, our family arrived in Reading PA late one night. We had read positive reviews about the EXETER FAMILY RESTAURANT and were pleased to find they were open 24 hours a day. This is NOT the place to go if you have difficulty deciding what to order, because the menu offers a huge variety of choices. We had soups and sandwiches and everything was excellent. Portions are generous (more than we could eat), everything is priced reasonably, and the service was attentive and friendly. Our experience left us wishing we had a place like this near our home !! ... really, these people deserved our recommendation !! read more
