It gives me no pleasure to rate a company two stars. The stars are solely for the convenience of pick-up and delivery, not for the repair service provided. My PC, which I built a few years ago, was powering on but not displaying anything on the monitor. I decided to save time by taking it to a professional instead of troubleshooting it myself. Similar to how I might change my own oil but often leave it to a professional for convenience, I expected a straightforward experience. Initially, the tech seemed to fix the issue within a few hours. He moved the GPU to a different slot and switched from HDMI to DP--an easy fix requiring no parts. Unfortunately, the interactions I had with the tech by text and phone left me with little confidence in his ability, and I ultimately decided to finish the repairs myself. When I called to ask about diagnosis costs, I was told it could cost up to $250, depending on the complexity. However, I was promptly billed the full $250 as soon as the computer was picked up--before any work had even been done. This felt unusual and concerning, as I typically expect to be billed after the diagnosis or repair work is completed. One major issue was the tech's recommendation to replace my CPU heatsink, which has no moving parts and was in perfect condition. His justification was that "missing clips" would make mounting new fans impossible, and that a new heatsink would include the necessary clips. But buying replacement clips costs just $4 on Amazon--or free from the manufacturer if I provided proof of purchase for new fans. Suggesting I spend $130 on a new heatsink instead of offering a much cheaper and simpler solution is unacceptable. When the PC was returned, the heatsink was in a grocery bag, which he claimed was for my "convenience." This actually made reassembly more inconvenient, as I then had to reinstall it myself. He offered to put it back, but he didn't have thermal paste on hand--a critical component. Installing a heatsink without thermal paste could destroy the CPU. If I hadn't known better, I might have let him do it, which would have caused irreparable damage. The tech also claimed to have worked on the PC for three days, but text messages show the main issue was resolved within hours. Beyond that, he unnecessarily removed parts, suggested replacing components that didn't need it, and generally made the situation more complicated than it needed to be. After this experience, I simply don't trust this company. While pick-up and delivery were convenient, the overall service left me disappointed. read more

I called these guys for a simple battery replacement for a MacBook Pro and was in sticker shock right off the bat. I decided to go with it and now kind of regretting it. Frankly the battery life isn't all that improved, and on top of that I'm missing a screw from the bottom, with one screwed in half way? What computer place does that?? I don't think I'll be going back. read more

Traveling for business. I am spazzing out because my first night in Arlington, VA; I get the message, "BOOTMGR image is corrupt..." The owner offers to do a motherboard service and expects me to pay $400, in-full, up front as he picks up my computer from a remote location. No guarantees and he refuses to meet me at his listed office. And when I explain that the circumstance lends for a receipt and partial downpayment, he refuses to further assist. He's adamant that this is the way they have done business in Arlington. This isn't NY, but I ain't gullible either. Imagine what that police report would read like. And this business has several OTHER 1 star reviews, too. He must've taken me for a fool seeing a southern area code. No, thank you. Sounds like another scam. Don't be a victim. read more

I'd recommend going here if you have a simple problem, but they are not really equipped to handle more complex technical computer issues. The employees are nice but lacking in deep expertise. I brought my computer in to try to have information pulled from some hard drives. I spent more than $200 to have them remove less than 10gb off a single drive and tell me they couldn't access the other information. I believe they were being sincere and tried to work on my device, but they just seem to have lacked the technical knowledge. For what they pulled off--which was a fraction of the information I know was stored on the computer--I could have used a simple adapter device available for $20 on Amazon to get my info rather than spent 10 times the cost. They offered a discount for my next service but I told them I don't plan to come back. Really had high hopes but the service fell very short of my expectations. read more

Caveat Emptor! This guy is shady! Charges way too much, and then if you have a minor problem soon thereafter, he charges you all over again. Don't attempt to negotiate the price, as he will start interrupting and yelling at you. He actually threatened me. Almost called the cops, as I'm too old for an assault and battery charge! Also, be carful as the company that shows on your credit card bill is from overseas. Shady!! read more

He is the best. My computer crashed late Saturday night - no other service was available to have someone come out. I got Expertise Computer's phone number and the owner came over after 10pm on Saturday night to pick up my computer and fixed in the next day Sunday. He was great! I also developed an internet problem which he corrected and he was a life saver. I would definitely call Expertise Computer - he seems to really be tuned into our needs and especially when its an emergency. He's the number 1 guy I would call for my computer repairs. read more

I yelped this place when my screen crapped out on me. Everything looks great but it took them a week to call me back about it being done after they had told me it would only be about 3 days - long enough to make me worried. Upon picking it up my total was $199 when I remember them saying it would probably be around $150. I had also asked them to check out the rest of my laptop for any other issues but they didn't. Probably all things I could deal with but parking to get here is SUCH a pain that I would go somewhere different next time. read more

Echoing past reviews, Expertise Computers is a no-frills, fast, reliable and fair place to get your computer fixed. I brought both my laptop and desktop in at the same time on a Saturday afternoon, and by Monday they had finished what needed to be done/could be done-unfortunately my desktop was beyond repair :(. The gentlemen working there are friendly and helpful, they helped me carry my desktop to and from my car when I was picking it up/dropping it off, even completely closing the store for a few minutes on one occasion when there was only one of them there. I'll be back! PS its a little tricky to locate, and parking is not easy. The store is on the ground floor of a tall apt building on the southern side of the T-intersection of Stafford and Ninth. It's tucked in a little, beyond a cafe, on the left hand side. read more

Fast, easy, and reliable. My HP notebook computer just died one day and wouldn't power up. I called HP, and they wanted me to pay $199 for repairs before even sending it to the company. I checked Yelp, found this shop in Ballston, read the good reviews, and brought in the computer. They said diagnostics would be about $45, then they would call me before doing any other repairs. The result: they called me within a day and said it was fixed. All they did was open up the computer and check all the cable connections, and it started right up. They didn't even find anything loose, but touching them must have put one loose one back in place. Now they could have told me there was some part that needed replacing, or some elaborate high-priced service that needed to be done. But no, they told me exactly what happened, and they charged me only for the diagnostics they told me about. No surprises, quick and easy, a very honest business. Thanks, guys! read more

Expertise replaced the screen on my iPad 4 overnight (drop off Sunday afternoon/pick up Monday), charging a fraction what it would have cost to go to Apple and get a replacement refurbished one. It works perfectly and looks great - if anything, I like the replacement screen better than the original, as it seem less fingerprint-prone. While we were in the shop, my friend remembered he had a broken speaker on his iPHone and had that replaced in just a few minutes. The gus at Expertise are friendly, patient, and great at what they do. The shop also features a range of refurbished laptops, most looking as good as new, at extremely good prices. If you're trying to find the place, it's on the side of the building away from Randolph Street, tucked on one side facing a kids' playground for the building next door. read more

I cracked the screen on my MacBook. At first I thought it wasn't going to be worth the money to get ti fixed, but John was able to get it done at a reasonable price. He also dropped it off at my house when it was fixed. Very trustworthy and nice guy. read more

Over the weekend - I decided to replace the RAM on my HP Folio laptop myself. The instructions on the internet made this appear to be a trivial task (almost as easy as tying your shoe). Well - removing my laptops keyboard and replacing the RAMS was as easy as promised - too bad that reattaching the cables connecting the keyboard to the motherboard were anything but easy (my hands are just too big). Luckily Expertise Computers were down the street - in the span of 2 hours - I had an email telling me that my computer was ready to be picked up. For a person that can't be without a computer - that is record time. That and the price was great (much less than $75 dollars). I have already recommended this place to my brother. read more

He will return your computer broken and claim you signed a contract stating he is not responsible for the damages. We gave a computer to him he replaced the hard drive and gave us our files from the pc. However, we found out later that the USB ports and the Audio ports were not working. He claimed it was microsofts mistake... micorsoft (really!). We took it to another technichian to find that the PC was returned with a bad motherboard. We called him he refused to help and to even give a copy of the contract that frees him from legal being sued. This guy (in my opinion) is a 100% theif and crook, beware. read more

Update: The owner attempted to dispute that I paid $500 through Yelp. He didn't dispute the screaming or yelling "F-CK YOU!" at me, just the $500. Expertise Computers: "Customer did not pay $500." Me: "I paid $510, split across two payments, on the following dates... Which did you not receive? I will cancel any payment you didn't receive with the credit card company." He then sent receipts for $510 without a word of apology. BUT the receipts don't even say "Expertise Computers" on them, nor do they describe the services rendered. They say "Trueway Inc" which is apparently the owner's "used clothing shipping" business on the side. Yeah, that seems legit. I asked for real receipts that have Expertise Computers and "laptop screen repair" on them and they won't respond. In summary, 1. They are so disorganized they don't know how much money they have taken from you 2. They will argue first and then check their records only after you threaten to take your money back 3. They won't provide a receipt that has the name of their business on it 4. They are probably committing tax fraud 5. They will literally scream obscenities at you if you question them Basically, this is the single worst business I have ever seen in my life. And I have Comcast. read more

Very expensive and poor quality of service. The quality of service provided was very poor. Last year about this time I took my laptop for a repair to their shop. My Hp screen was working fine but the screen had a crack so I wanted to get it fixed. I thought the estimate was very expensive but I agreed anyway because the laptop was new. I paid $360 for a screen repair. when I picked it up he told me I should keep the tape they put on my screen for about a few weeks. I kept the tape for a year because without it the laptop screen was not attached properly. Long story short sometime last week the tape couldn't hold it anymore and it came off. The laptop screen stopped working. I called them and ask if they could fix it because, this is a result of their poor installation in the first place. When I asked him he told me he will give me a discount for fixing the problem that is caused by their poor service. He also added by saying this is electronics you shouldn't expect it to work more than a year. I took my laptop to Geek squad and they told me the problem was it is because the screen came out. I don't know about anyone but if I pay $360 to get my screen fixed it better last for a few years. Also they know this that's why they only give 3 moth warranty. read more

Don't go to this place unless you want to get humiliated. You will face "the proudest technician on earth." You are not expected or allowed ask any questions like "how did you repair it". I did ask, and I got these answers, "You are doubting my professionalism. You think you payed the money so you are the smartest technician on earth?" And I quote "Stop bullshitting." This was, by FAR, the worst experience I have ever had at any retail establishment. It was a very short interaction and I was not rude in any way, and it left me extremely offended. I don't normally leave reviews for retail establishments, but this experience stood out so much that I feel the need to tell the story. I went into this store to purchase a power cord. There was a lighted OPEN sign on the door, but the door was locked. I tried to open the door and looked inside, but no one seemed to be working. Shortly thereafter, a gentleman ran out from a back room and opened the door for me. I told him that I was looking for a standard C13 power cord, and he grabbed the cord off the wall and said it was $15. I did not try to haggle at all, but HE then followed up by saying he would give it to me for $10. I handed him my credit card and he ran it, then handed the tablet to me and I chose the "no receipt" option. I handed the tablet back to him and he said "fifteen dollars." I responded with "I thought you said ten dollars," and he responded with "I have have ten of that." I didn't understand what he meant, so I asked once more if he charged me $15 or $10. He said "fifteen, but I have ten of that." Confused and frustrated, I started to leave the store and he said "I will give you five back!" I said, "okay, thanks I guess" and I started to open the door to leave. He then shouted at me "don't ever come back again!" At this point I was so caught off guard that I really didn't know how to respond, so I asked what he said and he reiterated that I could never come back. When I asked why, he said it was because of my attitude. I left with a laugh, but did not say anything else to the man, who was obviously very frustrated with his life and the state of his business. If you are looking for a pleasant and/or remotely normal retail experience, I would urge you to stay far, far away from this establishment. read more

Virus removal was less than half of any other place I called. They took a day longer than promised to fix it but I was stoked about the price and the fact that they were able to save my computer from what is (according to my internet research) the worst virus you can get on your computer. read more

After going to Best Buy and being told my laptop was fried and would take 2-4 weeks and minimally 150 dollars to get parts replaced, I went to Expertise. I walked in, dropped off my computer that night, and the next day received a call that my computer was fixed for 65 bucks (50 with the yelp discount). I never tried to call so I can't speak to Lyn's comment, but just showing up and dropping off my computer seemed to work perfectly! I will never use one of the big box store computer repair shops again! read more

Off the beaten path, Expertise Computers is hidden from any visibility in a relatively difficult to find location. This very small store was helmed by one man who claimed his name was Adam, and seemed cordial at first. I dropped off my dysfunctional equipment and was given the impression that my diagnostic would be completed same or next day. Apparently they forgot about me because I called three days later and it seemed as though my case was not even started yet. I decided to give Adam another chance. This proved to be an error on my part. After another several days passed I called and I was told that the diagnostics were progressing, but nothing had been determined. I said I would need to pick up my equipment to bring it elsewhere. In a stunning revelation I was told my computer was not on premises and that I would need to wait another day. I asked where, but before I could finish I was hung up on. When I made my way to Expertise Computers the next day I was told that my computer was still not available for pickup. At this point I demanded to know where it was, and I was told it was 'in pieces" in the back. I demanded to see it but was told customers were not allowed. Finally two days later I was told I could pick up the computer, but I could not get a refund on my diagnostics. When I got the computer back my hard drive was wiped clean and had no data on it. I was told that someone must have 'zeroed' it out. I feel that this business let me down and Yelp led me astray. Communications were difficult, customer service was practically non-existent and contrary to the name of this business, the expertise seemed to be quite lacking. I hope this is an outlier and that these other reviews are genuine, but I have my reservations. read more

I am a patient person. I don't get it fights or complain much, and I don't post reviews like this. But my experience today was so awful I had to post it. Expertise's website says the fix Samsung tablets. I came in with my Samsung tablet. The man at the counter says "we don't fix Samsung tablets." I say "your website says you do." His response? "We lied." And then he LAUGHS. When I asked him why he thought it was funny that he wasted my time by "lying" on his site, he got really mad, as if it was my fault! Not a word of apology or explanation. He basically said he was done with helping me and started to walk into the back of the store. When I said he should change his website, he said "it's not my website." He took absolutely no responsibility and got mad at me for it all. Summoning my ample patience, I allowed him to "explain." He said there was a place a few blocks away I could go for service. So apparently he thought wasting customers' time by having them come in to be told where else to go to get help was sufficient, and I should be thanking him for his rudeness. No, it doesn't work that way. Again, I'm not confrontational or easily displeased. I actually sympathize with people who must deal with customers. But this guy was unbelievably rude. I'm glad other people have had a good experience here, but I had the worst I've ever had with a retail shop. I can't speak about their work because, obviously, I took my tablet and left. read more

Had a 2014 macbook air out of warranty that wouldn't boot up. Tried all the steps (resetting SMC) Called Apple who wanted me to bring the device in to an apple store. I booked an appointment. Apple wouldn't provide any insight on diagnostic price ranges of what the repair might cost. I know why. Could be a logic board. Bad battery.... Nobody knows. All I wanted was a range of possibilities. That range must exist. I suspect they won't open a computer for free for less than x dollars. But nobody would even tell me what x dollars was. Called Expertise computers who gave it to me straight. And now my machine is back to life. Called back and offered to pay them something but they wouldn't even take my money. Saved me a trip to the Apple Store. And an unknown diagnostic repair fee costing a number nobody would even disclose at Apple.... Way to go Expertise Computers! PS - Called the Apple store to cancel my appointment and expressed my frustration with them. The advisor I spoke with apologized and said that they may not have even charged me if this was just a battery that needed to be unplugged and replugged in. But I don't know. Expertise Computer saved me time. Saved Apple time. And they won't even allow me to pay them to thank them. read more

The screen on my mac book bro cracked so I looked these guys up on yelp (great reviews) and dropped my laptop aka my life off on Monday. They knew immediately how to fix it and ordered the part. They were very nice in answering my many questions and let me know as soon as there was any progress on my laptop and had it fixed by saturday. (With the 2 snow days i consider that pretty fast) The price was also pretty good in comparison to some of the other side places i was looking at. Overall well done! read more

This place is a lifesaver. I work from home often, especially when I have round-the-clock projects, so I really need my giant, unwieldy laptop. Unfortunately, it abruptly shut off and died last weekend - at first I thought it had overheated, but after reading some information online, it sounded like the motherboard had just given up the ghost. I first tried buying new adapters/power cords, but when those didn't work, I brought it down to the guys at Expertise Computers and told them it sounded like the motherboard had died and that I needed it back fast, even if they had to replace it. They told me they would have to open it up and check inside, and once they did, they called and told me the motherboard had to be replaced and they were ordering the replacement. I asked them to get next-day shipping so I'd get my computer back faster and they obliged, and the day after they received it they had already put in the new motherboard and called me down to pick it up. Now it runs actually better than before and as usual, Expertise Computers has come through for me. Before this massive fix, they've also removed some really horrible trojans from this computer and a travel notebook with a very quick turnaround. The prices are incredibly reasonable - $99 for labor to replace the motherboard! I honestly would have paid more especially given how fast they worked at it, and given the fact that without them I probably would've just had to go and buy a new computer altogether rather than deal with the hassle of sending it to Dell (which would've been way more expensive) or to Geek Squad or somewhere else that would probably be incompetent and leave me worse off than I started. I completely trust this company, and they have always been very reliable without any of the frustrations of dealing with much bigger companies. They know what they're doing, I know one of the guys there has a degree in Computer Engineering, and I always feel like my computer's in good hands and that if anyone could save it, it'll be them. I used to be terrified of any computer problems but I have to say, knowing I have these guys in my building makes me feel a lot better - still hate having computer issues, but it gives me great peace of mind having this place to rely on and trust. Diagnosed the problem quickly and correctly - a dead cable between the motherboard and hard drive. No one else got the solution right. The value of that cannot be underestimated in dollars, time, or data saved. On top of that, service was fair, honest, and reasonable. In an industry of scammers, incompetents, and geek squads, my experience could not have been better. read more

This place is great, they told me how much it would cost, when it would be done by, and came through on both accounts. Didn't try to fanagle me for anything else, the repairman also said he tried to fix some other things wrong with the dents around my laptop screen. I recently had a computer that died & discovered my backup system failed. Fearing catastrophe, I took my dead iMac to this shop. While they weren't able to fix it, they were able to diagnose the problem and point me in the direction of a data recovery expert. In my experience, well intentioned techs will try to work beyond their scope of expertise and magnify the original problem as a result. In this case, Expertise Computers recognized its boundaries and pointed me in the direction of an expert who could fix my problem. My visit was $35 well spent. Brought my Toshiba in 9 months ago. It would turn on but nothing would appear on the screen. They cleaned it up (lots of dust inside) and 'reflowed' it. They gave me the heads up that these types of repairs sometimes don't last, so i purposely waited to review. Here we are 9 months later and it's still working like new. They also charged a reasonable price and had it ready in a couple days. read more

Is this business closed? I tried to get in touch last week. Their web site was down, no one returned my calls or e-mails and the office seemed vacant. I'm not sure what's going on, but I can only assume they are closed. A week later and I still haven't heard any response from my attempts to contact them.
