I had a temporary license plate on my vehicle and was charged quite a bit more than usual (I have other cars with the transponder). I called in to talk to a rep to see if I could get the correct charges applied. The rep was the nicest, most professional person ever (I believe her name was April). She knew her job well, cared about my problem, and fixed it on the spot. I couldn't be happier with my experience. More companies should hire quality employees like this. I appreciate the toll lanes, have a bit of an issue as I already pay taxes for roads to be cared for - but when I use the express lanes I acknowledge I need to pay. The billing system is horrid, honestly sometimes I just do not get to it but these jerks send you to collections if you are a week or two late. I have logged in so many times to pay my tolls but it will not let me because they sent it to collections - the collection company does not give an online payment option. I had received a letter from Express Toll, a payment invoice, stating that my vehicle was on the E470 Plaza C South expressway in June 2026 and that I have an unpaid charge. The big issue is that we live in California and the vehicle in question is registered in CA and has never left the state. Call to figure out what's going on and I get told I somehow owe over $250 and that they are "doing me a favor" by waiving $75. Where/how do you mail a statement indicating $116 is owed but magically the total payment to rectify the situation is more than the statement even indicated?! Make it make sense. This is ridiculous. "Our statements were reading the wrong plate number." Okay...that is my fault how? If you had the wrong plate number and you "just fixed it in [y]our system" but somehow all but 2 tolls in the last 10 months have been read and recorded correctly. This company will send you to collections without first sending you a bill. I had apparently gotten into the toll lane at some point (my original bill was $9) but I didn't even know I owed money until I got a collections notice. I think this is common practice with express toll but it really should be illegal. Heads up everyone! AVOID ESPRESS TOLL LIKE THE PLAGUE! Oklahoma signed a reciprocal agreement with them in 2024 which resulted in me getting a Colorado express toll charge on an OKLAHOMA highway. I have been trying to get this straightened out and Close my account withthem since Sebptember 2024. They recently notified me they have finally closed my account but the $35 refund never got to me. Last call I was told that it had gone back on my credit card. I asked for them to email me the info showing that which they said they had done before I hung up the phone. Every time they promised me an action by a certain date they were late. 2/3/25 update. Spoke with supervisor CP and info on their end is it has been refunded. When I first signed up for the express toll I had some questions so I called up and the person that assisted me was quite helpful. A few years later a rock hit my windshield and I lost my transponder and again calling up to talk to an agent they were very helpful and immediately sent me a new transponder. I have nothing negative to say about the personnel. I have nothing negative to say about how they try to keep ahead of the weather and get the roads clear. It cannot be an easy job of that I'm sure. Our son passed away in 2020, that was hard enough to deal with. 6 months ago we received an E 470 statement in our son's name, showing a $35 balance. I called & asked why we received anything from them with our son's name on it & they couldn't explain why. They asked for the death certificate & some paperwork to be submitted & I did that. Absolutely terrible. Outrageous prices (I've heard one of the most expressive toll-ways in the Nation) and one of the most complex billing processes out there. I suspect the complicated billing is intentional so they can rack up late fees. You now have to setup an account to pay on their website. No thanks, I don't plan on ever getting on that toll again, so I definitely don't need all of the junk mail. Call the automated phone system and it takes way too long just to pay a fee. I live in southeast Aurora and have family/friends that live out here too. I am constantly on Gun Club Rd. several times a month. I avoid E-470 like the plague (12 years since I last used it) for the reasons mentioned above. I will not get on there for any reason. Let's all go back to 1980 when there were no tax lanes, oops I mean toll lanes. The toll lanes are a tax hidden as a fee for the far left socialist state of CO. It's a way to increase the state budget from $8 billion in 2006 to $40 billion in 2024 without having to go to the citizens to ask for more money to pay for things like free daycare, and free money for everyone not working who do not want to work and pay taxes. I've lived here since 1976 and seen a total transformation from a great place to live and raise a family to the state I can't imagine ever moving to. My recommendation is, just don't use the toll roads and lanes ever. If everyone stops using them, the state will have to abandon charging these stupid high taxes (Tolls) and open the lanes for all to use. With my experience driving a service vehicle I have never really saved much time using the toll roads and lanes even during peak rush hour. The company I work for will pay the tolls if I choose to use a toll road but I still will not use them as a matter of principal. Lazy worthless pieces of garbage. My car was stolen via Hotwire, I reported it stolen immediately and NO action was taken to retrieve my car. The thief even drove through the toll which should've got him pursued and my car retrieved but instead all I got was this idiot's toll bill in the mail and I had to pay extra to get a police report to prove I reported it stolen and even after all that headache, I couldn't send it to an actual person for review. Such a massive corrupt organization that doesn't take accountability for anything. Charged me $25 per minute (per toll gate but they are so shortly spaced that this is what it ended up being) for driving in the toll lane while towing my broken down car even when there was no signage indicating this fee until you were already miles into the drive. Can't leave the lane either or that's a $250 fine so you are completely trapped. At least they have signs for that one. Called them several times and the customer service agents were very rude and didn't help with anything. They said they don't do anything with the signs and that I had to pay the fine anyways. On one call I actually got someone who had a smidge of humanity to try to assist me. He claimed he was going to work with finance and email me back. Fifth time on the phone with these folks because in 2021 they weren't sure if the temp tag number was a '6' or an '8' and now twice again in 2024 due to the same temp tag number apparently being stolen. In 2021 the pics showed a white SUV and my CAR is blue so fees were dismissed. In 2024, vehicle is a grey SUV. EXpressToll says I need to file a "Stolen/Lost License Plate Affidavit" with the DMV. Predator Company from HELL that Preys on the Poor This company is built on THEFT. It is built on FRAUD. It is built on TYRANNY. Years ago, I used the I-25 express lane. The Sign CLEARLY said, "HOV 2+ FREE" in more than one place as it always had-and I have photo proof. So, I am my passenger used the lane. Next thing you know, I get a bill in the mail. I contacted them with my photo proof attached and informed them that the charges were invalid. They responded by telling me that a transponder was now required. However, THEIR SIGNS SAID THIS NOWHERE. Further, they blamed the state by saying that they are responsible for THEIR SIGNS. I informed them that I would not be paying these fraudulent charges. I intended to pay only "legitimate" charges (not that any tolls are legitimate because the very concept of paying to use roads you already paid for is outrageous), but you know what I mean). However, their archaic and HORRIBLE website would not let me choose which specific charges to pay and I could only pay the oldest first-meaning I would have to pay the fraudulent charges before I could pay "legitimate" ones. So, many months went by and I was not able to pay the "legitimate" charges because the fraudulent stood in the way. I pursued them multiple times to get the fraudulent charges removed, and they refused to take responsibility for their incorrect signs or remove charges. The charges then snowballed over the months into over $1,200! That's right-the price of a cheap used car. It was made of tolls, court charges, and civil penalties. But it gets even better. Colorado passed a tyrannical law allowing toll roads to initiate a stop on renewal of one's vehicle registration (which we do not actually have to have in the first place) for unpaid tolls. So, I started getting threats in the mail that my registration would not be renewed. I went to the Aurora location to speak to them face-to-face and communicated what I had communicated long ago via e-mail. After back-and-forth with the front desk and telling them I would write a check for every legitimate charge right then if they removed all of the fees. They still refused. I did get them to work the amount from $1,200+ to $800 something. Having already been in years of financial struggle due to getting screwed elsewhere, paying this was horrible and infuriating. I paid HUNDREDS of dollars of my hard-earned and much-needed money...for WHAT? For ABSOLUTELY FREAKING NOTHING!!! All because of incompetence, predatory behavior, and lack of any compassion. All because a company in the BUSINESS OF ROADS lied on their ROAD SIGNS. Make no mistake. This is a branch of GOVERNMENT, NOT a private company as they claim. If a "company" can prevent you from using a road YOU PAID FOR unless your PAY AGAIN and the make you PAY LUDICROUS AMOUNTS IF YOU DON'T PAY and then STOP YOUR REGISTRATION FROM RENEWING, leaving you DEAD IN THE WATER, that is called GOVERNMENT and it is called TYRANNY and OPPRESSION.
