I arrived and they greeted me warmly and introduced me to Alison who would be styling me. She asked for my input on how I wanted my hair to look and she executed perfectly! She even offered to curl it after she blowed it out, and after I mentioned my hair usually doesn't hold curls well, she made sure to add the right type/ amount of product to make sure they would hold throughout the wedding while still having a natural, lightweight feel. This was my first time ever getting hair extensions. My naturally fine (greying) hair was a mess after over a year of not going to a hairdresser during quarantine. I was ready for a change, especially leading up to my wedding in the fall. I did a ton of research online before choosing Extology. When I arrived, I met Alec at the front desk, who is super nice and helpful. I met Kriscia during the initial consultation where she explained EVERYTHING! She answered my many questions, often demonstrating how to do something on her own hair to make sure that I understood. Because I was a first-time client, she did the color in a separate session before the extensions so she could see how the color looked in my hair to make sure the extensions she was going to order matched perfectly. Even after JUST the color, my hair looked great. The next session was for the extensions and cut. It takes quite a while to do the extensions, but I was able to get work done on my laptop (they gave me a lap desk to use) during some of the time. Kriscia is amazing about explaining things and setting expectations, double checking that I understood how much she was cutting off the length and things like that. Hair extensions require more work to take care of, and Kriscia explained all the details on how to do that. At the end, my hair looked absolutely amazing! It looks completely natural and beautiful! My fiancé was so impressed. The next day I had an appointment with my wedding make-up artist and my wedding hair stylist (two separate appointments). I can't speak to the hair services but I had a pretty awful experience here for an extension consultation. I came in for pricing on extensions for my upcoming wedding, and because my hair wasn't growing back as fast as I wanted post-chemo. The stylist (Kriscia) spent less than 10 minutes with me and was very dismissive of my questions and the beginning of the appointment felt very hostile. When she was measuring my head she kept commenting on how thin and uneven my hair was which made me extremely upset (did she even bother to read my entrance form where I stated my hair was growing back from treatment?) After 25 minutes of waiting for an estimate (knowing there was no way I was coming back), they said the consultation would be $100. The website does say consultations can be 50+ depending on service, but I felt this was very sneaky especially given the way I was treated. I asked the receptionist if given my dissatisfaction I could pay the $50 quoted on the website vs. $100 but was told no, and and gave me the email of the owner to try and resolve. I've since emailed her 3 times but didn't get a response. I now just realized they went ahead and charged the card on file $100 so I guess they didn't need to call me back after all! Also Extology- where is my alleged 20% cancer survivor discount? Again, I can't speak to the quality of the extensions but if you have any level of insecurity about your hair I would caution you not to go, and also to be aware that 50+ on the website means double. read more

When I first moved to Boston, my hair never looked worse after years of going to high-end salons in Manhattan (ones you would have heard of) and seeing stylists who never actually cared. One appointment with Allana changed my hair!! I've been seeing her for months and my hair has never looked better. I am now a customer for life! I made a Yelp account just to write this review-- that's how much I love this place. Allana and the stylists she trains in her salon really listen to you. I had to cancel my appt due to unforeseen circumstances not just because. I was then rudely informed by the receptionist that they had to charge my credit card 37.50 because I had to cancel less than 24 hrs. I will never make another appt with this salon. Terrible customer I did not cancel because of traffic concerns. I canceled because I was in an automobile accident where I ended up in the hospital and clearly was not able to attend!!! I live in Los Angeles now but I absolutely love coming here to get my hair done whenever I'm in town to visit my father. Previously, I lived in NYC for over a decade and she's just as talented as top stylists there. This incredible woman knows everything about extensions and how to treat your hair so it either a) remains healthy or b) gets healthy. She's a great communicator and she actually cares, unlike some hair stylists. I'm admittedly nitpicky about my hair extensions, cut, color, etc...but I never feel like I'm a bother if I'd like something slightly tweaked. She's just like "yup, let's get it 100% the way you want it". And boom! It's done. Okay, I could go on all day about how fantastic this woman is but, bottom line: go this salon! You'll be in terrific hands with talented, caring people who know hair. Allana has selected a team of fantastic people to work at her salon - so if you can't get an appointment with her, you'll still be in good hands. I've been to Extology two times BUT i recently went back for a partial highlight and haircut and had one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a salon. For context, I've been getting my hair highlighted for about 10 years and have never once spent more than 3 hours at the salon. My process is simple: i am naturally blonde but get dark roots in the winter so get partial highlights about twice a year to keep up the blonde base. At my most recent apt, it took 4 hours just to get through the foils. Then i sat for another hour. It Wasn't until 6 hours in that I finally got my hair washed. After getting my hair washed and going back to my seat, it was clear something was not right. My roots had a very clear orange tint and the rest of my hair was platinum. I immediately expressed my concern and told the hairdresser we needed to do damage control. After going through 2 more rounds of toner and gloss, i had officially been at the salon for 8 hours and didn't have results to show for it. Not to mention, i didn't even get a hair cut which i was supposed to. My experience was disappointing, and not once was there an apology made from the hairdresser or manager. The blame was put on me when i was told "i hadn't been to the salon in a while so there were no notes in my file" and "i have deceivingly thick hair which is why it took so long" and "this has never happened before." While they gave me a discounted price on the highlights, they still made me pay. After an experience like the one i had, i should have been compensated completely and i did not receive the response that i had hoped. read more

I usually go to a place in back bay, but wanted to try this place out as it is closer to home. My first mid-COVID haircut was an enjoyable experience with Kriscia. She was affable and very attentive to what I wanted. I usually let my stylist do whatever, but I appreciated her effort to meet my needs and attention to detail. My hair was long (just past mid back - thanks COVID) and I had 2-3 inches cut off, so I was charged for a long haircut. Website says $55+, and the total was $129. I was given a 30% discount for first service/neighborhood discount. Unfortunately, $129 + tip just isn't a reasonable price for me, even in Boston, for a basic haircut on a regular basis. Sadly, I won't be a regular, but am sure you will enjoy the service if you can afford it. Also, the guy at the front desk was so delightful and kind. I have been going to Alison for almost two years and couldn't be happier. I am in the process of going from darker to lighter hair and Allana and Alison have answered all my questions regarding the extensive process. I feel like I can trust them with my hair that they are doing the right thing. After my consultation I decided to take a LEAP OF FAITH and made several appointments with Kriscia to transform my hair. Kriscia spent the entire day transforming my reddish blondish ashy hair to a spectacular blonde! A few days later she added 18" Great Lengths hair extensions, matching the color PERFECTLY (the extensions were a mix of 3 different colors). Extology sets you up with everything you need to care for your extensions. I have had extensions before and I am super happy with Kriscia's talent! I have been back for check ups and each time Kriscia blocks her calendar to ensure she has plenty of time to tweak my hair to perfection. However this salon had some great reviews and won the 2016 award for Boston's best hair extensions. I met with Allana, the owner, who was professional and understanding of my hair paranoia and gave me great suggestions and was honest that extensions for my hair wouldn't be a good solution due to its thinness. I ended up booking and appt for a cut and color and absolutely love what she did and again her understanding and patience with my hair. Made an appt for tape in hair extensions. I've had these before and have loved them. I had my colour redone as I have some grey roots. They did s great job on my colour. Then did the tape ins Alana cut the tape ins and I can't even notice their in my hair very light. I love my new extensions. Will definitely be back. You shall go to these salons, get a free hair extension consultation and you will see it for yourself. You shall even try to cancel your free hair consultation in one of these salons a few hours before and you will see that they will not charge you $100. Dear Allana, I also wish you best of luck, but most importantly I wish you gaining a better understanding of how to treat well your clients and be transparent. I was disappointed with my experience at Extology. I chose to go to Extology because of their many great reviews online. My experience was far, far from a 5 star review. I initially went to go get a hair cut & color consultation towards the end of August. The haircut was fine, and cost $60.00. The color consultation was quick, and the stylist just said because I do not have grays, there is no reason for her to do full cover, just an all over gloss. I booked my appointment for Sept 04 at 4pm. The day before my appointment at 8pm, my flight back to Boston got cancelled. It was Labor Day weekend and airports were backed up, so I immediately e-mailed Extology and let them know the situation. The next morning I get a call saying I will still be charged 50% of my total because it was not 24 hours. I understood the cancellation policy, but due to my circumstances I was hoping they would just let me reschedule for the next day so I could get my color taken care of. The lady I spoke was extremely rude and said there was no budging, I could re-schedule, but I would still be charged 50% for this appointment. Shortly afterwards, I checked my bank statement and I have a charge for $88.00. The cost of all over gloss was $80.00. I called twice, no answer so I sent an e-mail back asking what the charges were for. I will spare all the details in a high level version: wrong things were added to my account, my haircut that I got in August was charged again, wrong information was told to me via e-mail, several mistypes of services, charges were added to my account that I NEVER discussed or agreed to, pricing was literally just arbitrary and all over the place, and to top it off the person I was speaking with was completely nonchalant about the entire situation. The only thing they did through this whole process was fix their OWN mistakes they were making while talking to me, and my charges were still wrong. It was such a huge waste of time. After numerous e-mails back and forth and them making huge mistakes, my card still had a $67.00 charge at the end of the day. I have since disputed this charge with my bank under fraudulent CC charges with the e-mail thread attached and made sure no other charges from this company be approved to my card. I have no doubt the stylists at Extology do a good job, but the management is awful and greedy, and try to screw you out your money for no reason. I would have certainly come back a day or two later to get my color had they not been so shady, but I'm actually glad I now know to stay far, far away from this place. read more

I have seen Lauren 3 times and have been happy since the first visit. Even though it was hard for me to explain exactly what I was looking for yesterday, she listened closely, and I left the salon feeling and looking great. As a redhead, there is nothing worse than going sandy grey and not being able to find a colorist that can recapture the original red. Red is VERY hard to do right. I have been at salons in NYC, up and down Newbury Street and around Harvard Square for the past 30 years (and needing to cover the grey for the past 10) and Lauren is the best colorist/stylist of the group. If you're a redhead or want to be a redhead, go to Lauren. The new salon is beautiful and the owner and all the other stylists are wonderful. Love watching women get hair extensions. Everyone here is just amazing. I have never had a bad experience with a single person there, and I always get compliments afterwards. I see Allison, who is 100% a color queen, and I always get so excited before my appointments. It's easy to book an appointment, the front desk is always friendly, and my hair always looks great. The prices are a little steep, even for Boston, but, 1, you get what you pay for, and 2, I only go in for color a couple of times a year and a trim one or two more times than that, so it's worth it to make sure that my wants and needs are being noted. Plus, I know they have a lot of extra costs right now to be in line with CDC guidelines. Right now, they are doing such a great job of keeping everything clean and sanitized even though I'm sure it's made their job a lot harder. I tell everyone to go here! read more

I cannot say enough about this salon - Allana is amazing. ! She transformed my daughter's mistake of a short haircut into a beautiful long head of hair that looks completely natural. I really wanted to like this place as it Is so convenient but I have had two appointments in the last 6 months and both we're disappointing. For a start it's incredibly difficult to make and appointment here and changing something is a nightmare. Their booking system is archaic and problematic. When I got to the salon, the space is really nice but the staff all have an arrogance about them - most of all the owner Alanna is quite rude. The service is also pretty poor - my haircut was rushed and the stylist had no interest in consulting with me. What is unforgivable though is that when I got a single process color, I left with brown dye marks on patches of my forehead and cheeks. Dreadful. Definitely go elsewhere. read more

Came in for an extension consult and was very disappointed with the result. Instead of answering my questions about clip-in hair extensions, the stylist instead tried to steer me in the direction of getting permanent extensions even after explaining to her several times that i was not interested in doing that. Was not informative at all and certainly don't feel like it was worth spending $100 on. Didn't realize i was spending this amount of money to be told that the "salon doesn't recommend using clip ins" when they advertise them on their website. read more

I've always known that Lauren does color like no one else - she somehow creates depth within my thinning hair, and makes it look like she used a couple of colors so it doesn't look like the color is painted on. Always looks natural. This week Lauren did extensions for me and OMG - it looks absolutely fabulous!!! My hair looks fuller and is now much longer - and the color matches exactly with mine. I don't feel any pulling and I haven't lost any of the extensions through brushing my hair. I can sleep just fine, no discomfort. Lauren expertly applied the extensions and feathered them in perfectly with my hair. There is no way anyone would ever know it's not my own hair. It's soft and shiny, easy to take care of. I can't tell you how happy I am!! Lauren's expert touch and attention to detail are second to none. I love the Extology salon - they're truly top notch, and they use the best products. The extensions are real hair with keratin bonds, so they don't damage my hair. I'm always so relaxed when I'm there, and I feel they really care about not only my hair but about me the overall experience I have. Every time I walk out of there I feel like a new person! I get color every three weeks and a haircut every few months, so yes, I'm pretty qualified to give an opinion :)) Allana is my stylist, and she's amazing. She knows exactly what I like, and more importantly, listens and understands when I want something new and different. There is another stylist there, Lauren, who is also amazing (I've see her work :) and she does this incredible head massage, I have goosebumps every time. They are both super professional and make sure their clients are always comfortable. The salon is small and very pretty and cozy, and with a big selection of teas, I don't mind spending time there on a cold day.
