You tell me if they DEFRAUDED THEIR CUSTOMER. The unit was advertised as 5'x10'. (see photos) They promise 50 square feet of storage space. (see photos) That's their declared offer on their website. On the contract it reads "approximate" size, 5'x10'. (see photos) When I finally measured the dimensions, the usable square footage was 45", or approximately 4'. (see photos) That's a whopping 15" square inches (over a foot) short of the deal we made. They promoted a 5'x10' and charged me for a 5'x10' and gave me a 4'x10'. That's a 20% reduction in square footage. They delivered 40' square feet. Let me ask you reader: is 40' square feet "approximately" 50' square feet to you? Would you be satisfied with that? Now you might say, you sir should have measured the unit. And you would be right. My bad that I assumed in good faith that a business would deliver on its offer and not short me a whole 20% of the product that they charged me for. My bad for not assuming everyone is predatory in their dealings. I asked for a rebate on the 20% product value that they did not supply me with. The district manager with whom I spoke of course said, "It's approximate. It's in your contract. There's nothing we can do." Approximate is one thing. Delivering 40' square feet of 50' square feet of the product you charged for seems to me more like willful misrepresentation aka fraud. What do you think? Oh, and that's not even why I'm moving out. I'm moving out because they increased the rent from $120 to $211, a 70% increase, which they claim is due to a promotional discount for the first few months ending, the terms of which are sort of buried on page 9 of the rental contract, though with no clear date as to when that will change. I missed the 30 day increase notice because they mailed it to my old address and never sent an email as well. To their credit, when I called them to say I didn't get the notice, they offered to reduce the rent back down to $176. However, that makes me wonder, if you can reduce rental rates at will, why can't you refund me for the square footage you charged me for but didn't provide? Give me a rebate. You owe me one. You might have a contract you can wave in my face, but an respectable business would make good on its offer. read more

BE FOREWARNED: that discounted "web rate" you see online or any discounted rate the offer you in person or over the phone is just a teaser rate that is only good for 3 months. They lure you in with that "discounted rate" and then they quickly bump you back up to the full price. They didn't tell us the monthly rate would only be good for 3 months when we signed the lease. I went back and looked at the lease and it is written as a month-to-month lease, which gives them the right to raise the rent by any amount with 30 days notice. I wish I had asked how long that rate would be in effect when we signed the lease. Aside from the shady promotional pricing strategy, the facility itself it very nice, clean, and has good climate control. I just wish they had been up front about how the rate they offered us would only be in effect for 3 months. That's something a sleazy salesperson with something to hide would do, not something a reputable company that looks out for its customers would do. read more

This place is a bait and switch. They get you in the door with their "web" rate, which is actually an introductory rate. Apparently, they always plan to raise your rent to the full rate in short order. In my case they didn't have the size I wanted when I needed storage, so I rented a larger unit on the assurance I could transfer to a smaller/cheaper unit when one becomes available. With no mention of the fact that I would need to pay the full, "walk-in rate," in doing so. I happened to be talking to the manager, Claudia, when I learned this and her way of trying to make me feel better about this was by pointing out that I'll be paying the full rate soon enough. They also lie about the size of their units. You'd need a magical tape measure to find a dimension resembling what's listed on the website. Essentially you pay for the innards of the walls, which may or may not be usable space, as well as the actual wall. The amount of space that is fully usable is at least a foot less for each dimension. For example, I have a 5' x 10' and it's more like 4' x 5'. I had hoped to downsize to a 5' x 5', which you would think would easily fit a 4' x 4' shelf. Wrong. The 5' x 5' is actually less than 4' deep and right around 4' wide. The positives: The facility is nice, new and clean. And so far there's always been a cart available. read more

Just a heads up for those thinking of signing up with Extra Space Storage based on a price you see on their website. Yes, that will be your price for a month or three. Then you will be surprised to see a huge increase. I suppose they know once you have your stuff stored, moving it is a hassle so folks will usually pay the shocking increase. Well, not this guy. They are not doing anything illegal. They advertise a price and that is what you get. Briefly. Their contracts state, "The term of this Agreement begins on the Rental Start Date listed above and shall continue on a MONTH-TO-MONTH basis until terminated." So just know that your introductory price (even though they don't call it that or even mention that it could change) is definitely going to go up. Not illegal, but certainly shifty and questionable ethics as a business model. No thanks. read more

It's clean enough. The riff raff in the area never really come over when your loading and unloading. If your like me and this is the closest storage then you should use it. The bad. It smells like some fake coverup scent that is horrid. Often times you can't get a cart to load and unload. They raise the rent ever 6 months. When I started it was $90 for a small unit. Pros: the place is clean and seemingly safe and you have access to yer shite 24 hours a day. The people who work there are nice. Cons: the business model is scam-ish. Your initial price will go up by 10 percent after 5 months, which they don't mention when you sign up. It will go up in another 6 months by another 10 percent. So within the first year you will pay another 20 percent. Nice little business model. This type of thing makes me rage, but they have the corner on the 24 hour access market so until that changes.. As far as the facility goes it's pretty good, they are clean and have good hours. I would just tell you that it's not a very good deal for the price. To get the first month free you need to get the insurance they sell. When you try and get this waved after the first month with your own renters or home owners insurance they take it off for one month and then add it back on the next month. When I went to move out they told me I had till the 4th but when I moved out they hit me for another 5 buck because it was actually the 3rd. This is in addition to the 10% price increase that others have mentioned in past reviews. Overall it's an ok place just be prepared to pay for it. read more

Clean and easy in and out, but really expensive. Also, be SURE you let them know well in advance when you are leaving. We didn't and were required to pay for an entire month we didn't use. Not sure what I think about the fingerprinting, to be honest. That is a bit weird for me, and it's my own fault for not recognizing the possible security issue there so I'm knocking off one star (too bad I can't do that for my own common sense, huh?). Anyway, apart from that, I thus far like this place, and it's primarily due to the kick-butt customer service. Some background: Me: Humongous, unexpected, messy like a mud pie break-up necessitates I flee my living space and take things out gradually while I'm alone. Them: Lovely building with lots of storages spaces within close proximity of my apartment. It was probably a match made more in heaven than anything else I could've asked for at that point in my life. I called their customer service line first, just to get some info. Frank was helpful and pleasant. By putting $10 on my credit card down, I was able to reserve a basic 5x5 that I could visit in person, which is exactly what I did a few hours later. Jewel was the manager I worked with, and she was quite nice, explaining the required insurance, as well as ensuring me that if I didn't like the unit she was showing me, she'd show me others until I found a good fit. I wasn't feeling particularly picky, so I took the first one I saw. She walked me through all of the procedures to get into the building, sold me a lock and some masking tape, and I was on my way. I wish the storage place was open later than 10pm, but I suppose that's more of a safety issue. At any rate, I found it conveniently located (it's pretty much right behind the Home Depot) and not really all that threatening feeling, even after dark. There were dollies available so I could move my stuff. I did get a wee bit lost trying to locate my space the first time on my own, but eventually I found it and was able to break it in with a few stuffed boxes and the like. That's about all I've used it for thus far, although I'm sure I'll be back to put more stuff in the next time I'm able to sneak into my own apartment alone (that sounds pathetic, doesn't it?). And although my renting of the unit came at a time when I was probably understandably not at my emotional best, the customer service I received made the renting process smooth for me. And that's something I really value. read more

It's a very nice, clean facility. The staff are helpful and mostly courteous. However, like many of these commercial storage places they pulled a bait and switch on me with the "first month free" scam. When you get there it's "sorry but that space has been rented." Then they show you a more expensive closet and suddenly you've gone from $89 a month to $129 a month (plus all the absurd one-time fees, the lock, etc.). I'm now storing my items with a Sharespace host for one third the cost. I hope peer-to-peer storage puts them out of business. I'm also dubious about the numerous five-star ratings here. This place is awesome. Good location (right next to the 580), really new facilities with a well integrated security system, and very attentive management. I have been very impressed with my experience there thusfar and really have nothing to complain about (unlike reviews below, I wasn't required to do any fingerprinting so maybe their policy has changed). Jewel, the manager here, is awesome. She is really on top of it and has always been quick to help and courteous in all our interactions. We rented a storage unit here in early 2018, following a move back to the Bay Area from out of state. We had to downsize our living situation at the time. Our experience with this particular Extra Space Storage location was entirely positive. The location is clean and everything is in excellent operating condition. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful (though on a day-to-day basis you don't really need to interact with them because everything is on autopilot). I would say initially I wasn't thrilled about it's geographical location but now after 2+ years there has never been any issues. So bottom line: if you live nearby and need a storage unit this one is great. Easy and quick to get in and out, clean, everything works well. A good place to keep your extra stuff! read more

We stored our stuff here after a cross country move. Booking the unit from 3,000 miles away was easy. Every person I dealt with on the phone was super friendly and helpful. The facility is very clean and feels very safe inside despite the neighborhood. Move-in and move-out was fairly easy since the parking area is large. Minus one star because the rates are high and my rate was set to increase this month. Not the best bargain in town, but the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the facility made it worth it to us. The praise: Before I bring up my billing complaint, please note that this facility is superb: clean, well-maintained, great hours, helpful staff. Smooth elevators, convenient carts, climate controlled. The lighting and music come on when I enter my floor, which always amuses me. My stuff stays clean in here! It is expensive, with better amenities than other storage locations (and I've used many others). (5 star rating) The complaint: I requested Emeryville Extra Space Storage remove a $35.00 late fee assessed to my unit #. Billing period is 23 JUN to 23 JUL 2020. Their new software/CRM deleted my cc on file, one of the associates informed me. I was not in the Bay Area and did not receive the mail sent to my home address; I was notified by phone, after the bill was days overdue. I called in with my cc, and was charged $263.35 instead of the usual $229.00. I have always paid on time. My auto bill pay with the same cc went smoothly to other storage facilities. The credit card deletion was not my doing, and I should not be charged for the error. The agent said she would remove the entire $263.35 charge, and that I would need to call back on Monday 27 JUL to discuss this with manager Claudia. When I checked my cc after the call, it appears the agent charged another $263.35 to my account. This is an unacceptable and unauthorized charge, again an error on the part of Extra Space Storage. Thus far, my little 5X10 storage has cost $526.70 for the month. Management needs to refund the second charge immediately. In 10 years of doing business with both Public Storage and Extra Space Storage, I have never experienced service issues or billing errors. (2 star rating) read more

Please pay attention to the lowest rated reviews here and you will notice a pattern....shady, bait and switch, pull you in at one price and raise your rates, poor customer service or complete absence thereof, lack of care and concern for customers (even in the midst of a Global Pandemic), whether very long-time customers or brand new, etc. etc. An allegedly clean facility doesn't matter if the management is trash and the rates are outrageous. Over a number of years, my rate was randomly raised again and again and again and again...just because they could. This place has no freaking overhead. It's a building with people's items in it and like 1 employee working in the office at a time. Why do you need $265-$400+/month for a unit just to keep my items??? Capitalist greed is disgusting. My advice: Skip this whole situation. Avoid the manager Claudia and avoid doing business here. You deserve so much better. I wasted thousands of dollars and had a terrible experience. Terrible customer service, the worst I've experienced in a long while. The only reason this place deserves any stars is due to it being new, modern and very close to my home. I signed up in June and I specifically asked if I could have packages delivered on my behalf. I was told yes. Unfortunately I almost missed a flight back from visiting family back in Montana and I had to have my mother send my luggage to me. I gave her the address to Extra Storage and my unit number. I have a very very uncommon last name. UPS attempted to deliver my luggage and the driver apparently mispronounced my name, but Jewel, the manager told me what name they used and it sounded just like my name - not to mention also gave her my unit number. Due to that and the fact that I did not sign a hold harmless letter (which was never offered nor explained to me when I specifically asked about having packages delivered) she refused the package. She offered no apology, no sympathy of any kind, no phone call, and why she couldn't have at least asked UPS to attempt to deliver the next day so she could contact the storage unit owner (me) to obtain this "hold harmless" letter is beyond my comprehension. So my luggage was shipped back to Montana, not cheap and I couldn't even have it stopped in transit because my parents were on vacation and had left the tracking number at their home. Even more bad news about this company... I had contacted corporate almost 2 weeks ago just to get a simple apology. No apology yet... And then I was contacted by Ashley last Friday because my payment was late. I was told when I signed up for the storage unit that I would receive an emailed reminder. Nope never got that either and when I told her about it she said that I'm not the only customer who has mentioned that. This place really needs to get their shiz together if they want to attract customers. Internet savvy customers can really hurt a business. read more

They require fingerprints -- absolutely insane from a pissant little storage chain that doesn't have the resources to protect information that valuable. Watching them file a index card containing our thumb and index-finger prints in a freaking *file cabinet* (which didn't even appear to be locked) was more than enough to make us cancel our rental agreement and walk away. PS to those who rent there now: Extra Space offers no language that protects you from having those prints shared with or sold to third parties. read more

Let's just say i've had a number of bad experiences with this particular person who has a lot of attitude. If you're planning on being there longer than 6 months, Aunt Esther says BEWARE children! I first went to Public Storage on Shellmound and 65th... BIG mistake. The property manager there is a complete ass, and it takes a lot for me to say that about someone. I quickly cancelled my reservation there and went to the next closest place: Extra Space in Emeryville. The difference was night and day. Lesea was very sweet, the place is IMMACULATE, and they supply all the moving accessories you could need. I was skeptical about having a fourth floor unit, thinking it would make my move that much more cumbersome, but their facility is amazing: big, convenient elevators, large doors, and free dollies/carts. I only had bedroom furniture to move, but the entire process of signing a lease and completely unloading my car -- all the way up until I locked my unit's door and drove away -- took less than ninety minutes. I will definitely come here again. read more
