The DTLA Team is incredibly rude. The employee yelled and hung up the phone when I questioned why I have been doubly charged. The response was that I paid late in the past and now I have paid on time, and in advance, which is "a good thing". I never authorised and was not imformed I paid in advance. This was uncovered from receiving an email to pay again within five days of a previous payment. The manager then said his employee is well within their rights to hang up on me and there are no advance payments, I'm up to date. They refuse to refund me and will not answer my emails asking why there are 8 charges covering 6 months of the year. Management claims if I pay late and then on time in the same month, the charges will be allocated twice in that month, but not cover the said month? Absolutely unacceptable! read more

December 30, 2024 I received this injury due to this protruding foot-long piece of metal Sticking from the wall around a blind corner. I asked for a Band-Aid in the front office, and was scoffed at. "We don't give customers bandaids. Do you think we're a Pharmacy?" I had to go to the emergency room, Had to get a tetanus shot, Had to go on antibiotics, missed two weeks of work, and now six weeks later have a lifelong scar. Extra Space storage? Their response has been "Lady go f$&k off." Even their employees (Look online) Say the worst part about their job is how aggressive they are towards customers. Updating to 1 star. I can't count all the reasons this place is complete trash. 1) as a policy, they don't waive late fees. I had a late fee because my previous card had fraudulent activity on it and needed to be cancelled. Replacing it caused me to be late in updating my payment info. Requested a waiver of the late fee and they told me to fuck myself. 2) as soon as they lock you into a contract, they raise the rent of your unit automatically by $70 on month 3 and then increase it $60 PER MONTH, every 3 months thereafter. The increase has no relation to increased rents or anything. So why do they have this built-in quarterly increase? Because fuck you, that's why. What are you going to do, go move all your stuff to another facility? Reread all that because it's not a joke. $70 rent increase at month 3. $60 increase thereafter every 6 months. For literally no reason other than they can. 3) if you stay 30 seconds after closing (I stayed 4 mins because I lost track of time) you are locked in. You can't get out nor can you contact anyone to let you out. You're stuck. Not only that, they'll contact you the next day to yell at you about it and tell you that they will remove your in and out privileges and require that you be accompanied by a chaperone to enter and exit. Completely bananas. 4) they have thefts here ALL the time. All the time. You think the facility is safe. It is not. Honestly the worst storage facility I've ever used and I cannot emphasize that enough. read more

They don't tell you that they'll raise your rent to "market rate" when they gladly take your money when you first rent a unit. Extra space storage is a huge scam!!! They have purchased many fake five-star reviews on Google Maps. Look how many of those people have only reviewed this place and nowhere else! Re: Extra Space reply below. "Rising costs of top notch storage." Ha! More like bait and switch. You advertise one price and then conveniently raise it as soon as your customer puts their things in. I must say that the staff and management of the facility do a great job. They have always been helpful, courteous and friendly. The facility is clean and well-kept. The units are clean, secure, well-lit and ventilated. So why such a low rating? This is now the second time that I entered into a 'promotional rate' (although neither time, did I see it disclosed when I booked) and within a few months the rates are dramatically increased. On the first occasion, I got what I researched to be, a competitive rate with a comparable Public Storage unit, at a slightly better rate (perhaps 10% less than PS). The rate more than double within a few months, then again soon after. The claim was the promotional rate was in effect while they were repairing the elevator, and when they were done, the rate went to the highest rate for that size unit. I moved out shortly afterwards & lived with my crap in my living room throughout the pandemic. Having enough of staring at mementos that I should just throw away, I went back and fell into the same bait & switch trap. I thought I had carefully checked to see if this was a promotional rate, and could not find anything that said it was, so I booked it. Again, the rate was just slightly less that PS. Not surprisingly, but quite upsetting, a few months later, the same thing happened. The rate jumps up ~30%, $75/month (which is auto billed, so I almost didn't even notice), bringing it to over $325/month for 77sq. ft. This is nearly double the $/sq. ft. rate I pay for my apartment in a 'luxury' building in the heart of Hollywood. How is this justified? Did water & power sharply increase? There are no water-based amenities for renters, so unless every renter goes there daily & flushes the toilet 165 times, plus the facility is equipped with LED lighting (most efficient) so... No. Did your business or property tax increase? No. Did insurance premiums go up? Renters pay insurance on top of the rental, so... No. Did Extra Space Storage give all of their employees a 30% raise in wages? I certainly do not know this for fact, but I don't think that I am going out on a limb when I proport- Not very likely. What this is, is an unscrupulous business practice that does little retain customers. I'm sure it is all made legal in the fine print, so don't worry about any lawsuits coming your way, but the real result is that you have lost another customer, again. This time for good. Not only will I not consider using this brand ever in the future, but I will also be sure to shout from the rooftops to warn others that this company holds their clients in little regard and resorts to these shady, borderline illegal business practices to bait & switch renters into paying higher than advertised, unprinted, no metric, unfounded rent increases. I am a real person, with a real job and real bills. But you can probably conclude that because this is definitely not a 5-star rating. And no, there is nothing that you can do to make me take this down because it must serve as a warning to others who may fall into the same trap! I have rented many storage units over the past 40 years. To my recollection, I have never had an increase of significance that I can remember, other than this company. read more

They rented me a storage unit, told me I could move in, and gave me access code. When I showed up with full moving truck and movers, the access code didn't work. In addition, the storage unit I paid for had someone elses lock on it. I ended up having to pay movers extra hours and pay for truck rental another day. Worst excuse for a storage facility. My experience was bad. It all started when a year ago. I reserved a $122 5x10 space then turned out to be $152, i was ok with it, then a few months after i was notified a rent increase was coming and my rent will go upto $182 but now exactly a year rent will go up $ 237. Thats just crazy and you can see the same space being posted now for a lot less. Way to go Extra Space Storage, very nice way to thank loyal customers. This place has my stuff stored so naturally i would do anything to protect it. I had a few times i found that the chain link fence was cut and i fixed it. A time that someone tried to break in into my storage and left the gate jammed, i fixed that too, i been vigilant and a lot of times stayed late because the area is not as safe as we like it to be, many times this place has been broken into. The worse experience i had was when late at night as i exited the place i noticed both main gates where broken into. I got worried and called their 24hr hotline to report it, i did not leave the facility, i parked my car at the entrance on hazard waiting for who ever they are sending to secure the place, next thing i know the police arrived and i got questioned, turned out thaf the manager reported me as suspect because he saw me leaving late, had no balls to come out from his place which was the building beside thier office to investigate, the police had to bang on his door for him to come out, i was there almost midnight waiting for them to come and watching the place because i thought nobody or security was guarding the place, manager had no balls to come out even after when their 800 number support said that the manager is coming. I almost git hauled in jail. That was badddd.. And yes $237 will start on oct. I checked my email history to see what date i exactly started renting the place and long behold i found a old email of my contract with them, i guess what shocking thing i discovered , they signed my contract for me. Hidden in their agreement is that they can (and do) raise your rent at any time. 2. After ONE MONTH at the advertised rate that I signed up for ($167/mo) they raised it by 50%!!! 3. Without notice!!! 4. Only when I called them on this did they agree to a PARTIAL refund, and would not guarantee future increases would not happen. They will always use the same language: "From time to time customers may be subject to a rent increase due to the competitive blah blah blah." There's no "time to time" about it. They will IMMEDIATELY AND SUBSTANTIALLY GOUGE YOU after you sign up. This *IS* their business model. read more

I have been renting a space from ExtraSpace for over 20 years. The one located on Eddy St used to be a small family business, and I remember renting a space for $65,- a month. In comes ExtraSpace, and they have increased my rate from the day they took over the business. From $65,- to today's rate of $157,- a month. For the the same space. It has nothing to do with "market value" it's all about greed!! The space looks the same from the day I rented it. It's not like they invested into making the storage units look better. And anyone who gave the place 4 stars, was either paid to give positive reviews, or works for the company. This company just took advantage of a situation that was artificially created with the help of big real estate companies, and developers. It's greed, nothing else! Our contract states that they must provide 30 days notice of rate increases via email. After less than 12 months here my rate has increased twice, all the way from $250 to $450 with no notice at all. I'll be taking legal action now. Fuck this shady company. read more

This is a good place to keep your things in storage! I had my things here for about 3 months and they had pretty competitive prices and it was close to my old place. The manager is pretty thorough but I had to dock a star because I personally don't remember them telling me about how the unit can be prorated if you move your things out early. The manager told me that once you're billed it could be really hard to refund but he was nice and submitted it to even see if it could be accepted. Hopefully I'll get my money back. But my experience here has been good, it's the only storage unit I've ever used so I can't really compare it to other places. I did like how it seemed very secure and clean inside the storage unit itself. Mine was around $110/month for the smallest unit. Tip: you have to give them a notice 10 days before the billing day for the following month if you want to be prorated. This rule sucks if you're not sure when you'll be moving your things out by and just have an estimate of when you want to move. So make sure you call them in advance so you're not billed the next month without the possibility of getting a refund (like me!) read more

After being at ExtraStorage for about 10 years, I will be looking for another facility. After dropping off my Christmas decorations in January I return to retrieve some folding chairs in April and found that my indoor 5x5 unit had been broken into. I went to the office and asked why a red lock was on my unit and the person looked up my account and said it had been broken into. I asked why I had not been contacted and there was a note that said they called and left a message...? I checked my phone and phone bill and I received no call or message from ExtraSpace on the day recorded in their "notes." Some jewelry of sentimental value was taken. So not only is my property no longer safe there, they are incompetent in even alerting customers about robbery. *Also, they raise the price every 3-6 months.... for what? So my property can be stolen? Done. read more
