They seem to operate using a scam-like tactic. They advertise lower prices online without clearly stating that those rates are only promotional. This makes you believe that's the price you'll actually be paying. After you sign up and make a payment, the contract (if you take the time to read the fine print) reveals that the price is only valid for 3-4 months. After that, it more than doubles. Why not be upfront about it instead of putting people through all this hassle? It's totally misleading. I assume they think once people move in they might just put up with the scam instead of going through the hassle of moving out again. read more

It would be 5 stars if not for two things: 1. They ban moving cubes/containers from the property. Somehow in their minds they think that these companies (who do moving) are their competitors and ban them for "competitive branding". 2. They jack the price up like crazy. Well, okay, their contracts are month to month, so you have to expect that, but they also lie to you and you can see it below from their business damage control rep, Emily S.: she says that this price increase is due to "market conditions". So market condition at the time of this writing on their own website is $258/mo for 10x20' unit. Do you know how much I pay? $558. Fantastic and affordable storage space. I highly recommend Extra Space storage in Newark. I have a 5x5 inside storage space. There's 2 large elevators to access the 3rd floor, so it's not a lift. The storage facility is new and clean, and there's clean bathrooms on the first floor. The #1 reason to store here though, is that they don't rip you off/ price gouge you. I got the web special for $31 per month, 2 years ago. After around 6 months, it went up to $36. Then after a year it went up to $41. Then after another 6 months it went up to $53. Now after 2 years plus a few months change, I am still paying $53/month! If you have ever rented other storage units from other companies in the Bay Area, IYKYK. $53/month for a 5x5 after 2 years of being in the same storage facility is unheard of. That is very fair and affordable. I'm not sure if it's a corporate one, or if other locations are franchised, but a family member of mine had a horrible experience with a different extra space location almost doubling the price of his unit after 1 year. So tldr: highly recommend the Clark Ave, Newark Extra Space facility! read more

This was the first time getting a storage unit for myself so there's a lot I didn't know and much to learn. I needed a temporary space to store my possessions for ~40 days. What I normally conjure up when I think of storage units was Public Storage that's basically a garage where you can access outside. I'm the type to do my research and explore my options. Extra Space came highly-recommended on Yelp. I had originally explained to the rep in the Mowry location that I wanted to make sure there was space for a moving truck. I wish I caught her name because she was so personable and patient. She found 10x20 units at the Newark location that has large loading docks and came at a discount (half price!). She helped me reserve a unit that was easy access from the dock - a straight shot from the entrance. When my reservation began, I went by to scope out the situation. Learn what's needed and guidelines. Nelson taught me how to use my new cylinder lock (purchased there). He even had me practice on a lock in the lobby. It helped a lot. I ended up choosing an interior unit. It feels cleaner and more secure. I got a bit turned around and didn't end up at the second dock from the front gate so maybe that's why the sliding door didn't work for me when I tried my code. That dock is closest to the back gate - and the largest loading area. There's a red switch by the sliding door that will keep the door in the open position for easy access - or else you'll need to punch in your code with every trip to your vehicle! The unit was so clean when I moved in. I think it was not only vacuumed but mopped! I had swung by to pick up some more boxes, and Ian even helped lug the unwieldy boxes to my car. Talking about excellent service! The door was easy to roll up and down - sliding very smoothly. Once, I left and didn't fully register whether I locked my unit properly. I called and asked Danelle to check. She happily obliged and called me back to confirm it was indeed securely locked up. Very secure - you'll need a code to get in and out of the metal gates, sliding door, and another metal door. Talking about keeping your stuff safe! I had to extend my rental for about a week. They helped me no problem. IDK maybe I lucked out and had only interacted with nice people OR they hired well and all their personnel are great! Checkout was a breeze. After you vacate, call the front office and leave the gate up. They will inspect and send you a confirmation. Extra Space is an excellent choice for your storage needs! I highly highly recommend them. Don't hesitate to use them. They seem to be all over the area. read more

The Place is convenient, clean and ultra secured. However, after 2-3 months they will double your rate. I was paying a comfortable rate for my unit. When all the suddenly my rate doubled. They claim to have sent a noticed. But sometimes you don't have a steady address, hence a storage unit for your belongings. Eventually I got the noticed at the temp address I was using. They claimed they were doubling the price of my unit because of high demand and shortage of units available. Well for the next 3 months I went online and noticed they had plenty of units available at similar prices/rates to my mine. I visited my unit 3x a week and saw plenty of units available without locks. So, their letter and reason for price gouge was false. Their contract clearly states a "FIXED" rate no matter what. They won't honor it. Nor will respond. Find another location. Or be prepared to move units every 3 months to keep the rate the contract promised. Not sure why they have you sign contracts when it's they clearly won't honor it. Price bait, price gouge. This is their practice of theirs. Both vehicles could have parked along side of the wall leaving all that space open for other cars coming in and out. That's not bad enough. If I could give negative stars I would. My unit was broken into and a box of expensive items was taken from my unit. Honestly believe someone that works in the office broke into my unit, went through every one of my boxes and took the most valuable one. Luckily I had insurance on the unit. This is part of why I believe the person who sold me the unit, Nelson, had something to do with it. They knew the unit had insurance and possibly something valuable. Facility is pretty new, maintained well, and secure. Promotional prices are very good and the insurance fees are fair. They have complimentary carts to help make moving large items much more convenient. Really like this area due to its relatively low crime rate and isolated location. Nelson helped us with our initial questions and getting our lease set up. He's a nice guy and very talkative, however I suggest that you be skeptical and cautious about some of the things he says. He was very pushy with us, and employed a lot of "shady car salesman" tactics, saying a bunch of things that were exaggerated or untrue.. it was honestly quite irritating to deal with, since it was getting to the point of him being clingy and not letting us decide how we wanted to handle our own schedule. We first stopped in about a month prior to our intended starting date, to see the storage units in person and determine what size we wanted. We were told that we could reserve a unit up to two weeks ahead, so we decided to return in two weeks. Two weeks later, we returned and reminded Nelson of our earlier encounter. The unit we liked was still available, so we asked him if we can go ahead and reserve it. At this point, he acted really shady and was pushing us to start our lease immediately, making excuses such as not being able to click the reservation date on his computer (he didn't even attempt to do so and once I told him to, it worked) and then saying that he can promise us that the unit won't be available in two weeks due to it "being in a popular and more secure location", especially with "several break-ins" occurring recently. Confused, I asked what the point of the reservation system was if it doesn't actually reserve the unit, and he just shrugged and said that if someone else comes in and says they want that particular unit, they can take it... It seemed pretty obvious that he was using these tactics to persuade us into starting our lease early for some reason. I repeatedly told him that we'll take our chances, since we really don't want to start our lease at this time. It really took him WAY longer than it needed to until he agreed to just create the reservation that we wanted. Fortunately, we had a really great experience using this facility during our lease. The security is implemented really well, and the building is kept clean and in great condition. We had no issues with access or our storage unit itself. We ran into a few situations where we had to extend our lease by a few weeks at a time, at last minute's notice. Thankfully, Ian and Amanda provided amazing service and were very transparent, honest, and helpful with getting us what we needed without beating around the bush. read more

He's been nothing but trustworthy, prompt, friendly, helpful, and professional--traits you want in any person you're doing business with. He follows through when he says he will and goes out of his way to take care of you. Extra Storage is lucky to have him and we're so glad he's here! The website was frustrating to work with when we reserved our unit but Ian took care of us, making sure we got the deal that brought us across the bay. The facility is secure, clean, and easy to get in and out of. The dollies are always available. Our only criticism is that it constantly smells of incense or something. Yuck. Access = 6am to 10pm. *** I will Suggest that Extra Space show that on this Yelp page. *** It only shows Office Hours, which is good, but Include Gate/ Access Time, too. I been having a bit of an issue and I been having great customer service with Danelle  at your Newark location

It started off all good with the special internet rate I was happy with my unit and monthly price. About 3-4 months in I get an email that they are raising the price on my unit from the internet rate and then another 2 months later I got another email saying that the price would be going up AGAIN after already raising the price. 2 times raising my rent of the unit within 6 months. After speaking to the manager about this I was told there was nothing they can do and that I signed the contract. I am now paying $182 a month for a unit I was told that I would be paying $84. They will not tell you that before signing the contract they will send you an email or letter after the signing and then tell you it's your fault. For Emily S. I have already tried calling and was told there is nothing that can be done. The only other option was to downgrade which I cannot do because what I have in my unit now is just enough space to fit everything read more

I just moved out of my storage to find that my unit had a rodent infestation. Besides findng a dead mouse, several of my boxes were chewed up and filled with rodent feces. Totally gross. I loved this storage unit. I used it for about 3 months. I received a promo on my unit which was great because I got one of the bigger units. It was very clean and my unit was easy to access. Never had any issues w the unit. Highly recommend this location. The workers go above and beyond . Forgot my keys on move out day and rather than driving home , they assisted without hesitation and helped me get into my storage. I was reorganizing my storage unit to fit more boxes and while moving them happen to have lost my necklace medallion and it has much sentimental value that I could never replace it. Nelson the maintenance engineer saw me looking for around my storage area and asked me if I lost something. I told him I lost part of my necklace. I thought it was gone forever. The next day I came back to finish the job and Nelson said " I think I found something that belonged to you. What a Sweet Heart he is he is caring and very understanding. This is actually my boyfriends storage unit and I just had to leave a review because I was so pleasantly shocked. This is the cleanest, most well kept storage unit place I've ever seen. I think this might even be the cleanest place I've been to in general! It's secure (you need to put your code in to access different things like the elevator). And the bathrooms are so nice as well! You can tell they maintain it very well because it even smells clean. I never care to leave reviews and idk why I'm so shocked by a storage unit but rent here if you need a place!! read more
