I have a 1995 Volvo so the yelp coupon didn't really apply. It was a fair price anyway since the gentleman, Hassan, who processed the test was professional, efficient, thoughtful and very friendly. He noticed I was low on windshield wiper fluid and added water without my asking. He also gave me advice about how to fix my hood which is difficult to open. I did ask him if he'd check my oil, which he did happily, since I have such a hard time getting the hood open and he advised me to add more within a certain time and also suggested I have it changed. This place offers a good experience for a process that has not often been one I look forward to getting done. I will definitely be back and highly recommend. read more

Just took my car in for s smog test and couldn't be happier with the service I received. Price was great, too (check online to see if they have any coupons!). Friendly. Speedy (if you have a "newer" car that doesn't require lots of testing). His introductory price (listed on this Yelp page) cannot be beat as he can't be making any money on it. Looked at my registration renewal this week and realized I needed to get a smog check before 10/22! I found a $25 groupon for EZ Star Smog Test Only 2, which happens to be just around the corner for me, and after calling in to see if I needed an appointment I was told to come right on in. I was welcomed there by Hassan, the friendly gentleman who I had spoken with on the phone, and he got me set up quickly and courteously. He accepted the groupon and told me the only other charge would be the $8.25 DMV filing fee (cash), which the groupon details had informed me of as well. 15 minutes later I was done, with 5 days to spare before the 10/22 deadline. Thank you, Hassan! I will definitely be back for future smog checks. It is a very convenient location for me as I live nearby but I think it is a convenient smog spot for people from all over who may be pass through the intersection of San Pablo and Gilman in northwest Berkeley. read more

Hassan was very pleasant and accommodating on the phone when I asked about the coupon I got via Groupon/online. He let me know I could make an appointment or if I wanted I could come on down and he could do smog right when I got there. Hassan was very friendly, the location was easy to get to with easy access to Hwy 80. While waiting in the lobby I decided to sit outside in the sun and a chair was provided the smog didn't take long approximately 20 minutes. Since my car is an older car and I didn't understand why I had to ALWAYS go to a smog test only site, Hassan explained and reviewed my smog test numbers and expectations from DMV. Asim took the car in right away and treated it with incredible care from start to finish. He carefully positioned the car on the lift, removed all four wheels, and performed a thorough inspection using the proper brake measuring gauges. He walked me through the brake pad wear on both the front and rear, checked the condition of the rotors, and explained everything in a way that was easy to understand. What really impressed me was the time he took to answer my questions. He spent at least 20 minutes discussing the condition of the brakes, maintenance expectations, and what to watch for in the future. His assessment was that my brakes were in excellent condition and could likely last another five years or more before needing replacement. After the inspection, he carefully reinstalled everything, torqued the lug nuts to the proper specifications, and lowered the car with the same level of care and professionalism he showed throughout the visit. Then came the biggest surprise. When I asked what I owed him, he told me the inspection was completely free. In an industry where it's easy to feel pressured into unnecessary repairs, Asim was honest, thoughtful, professional, and genuinely helpful. That kind of integrity is rare and deserves recognition. I will absolutely be bringing my Porsche back when it eventually needs brakes, and I wouldn't hesitate to bring my Toyota or Subaru there as well. Highly recommended. THE GOOD: This small…read moreshop is ran by a guy name Earl. Seems to have been in business for quite some time. I go to him on a Monday 10/20/25 for a smog diagnosis that he charged $95, about the standard price. He was able to complete the inspection and gave me a diagnosis back same day (approx. 4 hours total time). He offered a free throttle body clean because upon their inspection, the throttle was dirty and had a lot of carbon build up. I was notified the vehicle would be ready for pick up at 4:15PM, I told him I was going to be there 4:30PM. When I had arrived, earl was nice enough to wait around after they had closed for me to receive my vehicle. THE BAD: After I paid him for the diagnosis, he told me what was wrong and gave me the keys, then promptly left with a friend that was awaiting him. Right after I pulled off in my car, something was awfully wrong. The idle RPMS was sitting at almost 2K RPMS on a cold start and would come to about 1500-1900RPMS the entire time. As I was driving while hitting the gas you could hear what sounded like was a vacuum leak somewhere and car has some minor lost power. I call Earl immediately after, but he was already gone from the shop; Earl told me to just bring it in first thing in the morning. I bring the vehicle back to Earl on 10/21/25 a day later and present to him what had sounded like a vacuum leak. He was quick to check into but also VERY QUICK TO DENY RESPONSIBILITY. I told him that the vehicle was 110% not like this when I had brought it in and they definitely may have knocked a hose or two loose or something. They first told me they would not doing anything like that, and wanted to run a smoke down test in-front of me to check for vacuum leaks. I was told by Earl, they only took off the air intake boot to access the throttle body to spray carb cleaner and there's absolutely no way they caused any of the issues presented. They run the test, and there shows no leaks from the smoke. They also run a brake clean spray to see if it will choke the RPMs down (another method to check for vacuum leaks). We go for a couple of test drives back and forth, the mechanic that Earl has working for him, poor guys age is catching up to him and cannot hear a huge vacuum leak for his life. Earl claims to hear it as well, but cannot figure out what it is. Earl first blames the brake booster, and is adamantly asserting that he or his shop did not cause this. ***Earl THEN DISCOVERS A MISSING connection on my VSV, but the old mechanic claims it won't cause any vacuum leaks or noises and just caps it off.***. They then proceed to say the noise and high RPMS is an exhaust leak and show me where it is leaking. You can see exhaust smoke coming out the pipe right below the manifold but I wouldn't say it was sufficient enough to be causing such a vacuum leak noise. They adjudicate the issue is an exhaust leak, therefore, they did not cause it and cannot fix it anyways. It is worth mentioning I am not by any means a mechanic. I am what you call a garage monkey. I understand some concepts, but no way am I to be at the SUPPOSED level these guys are at. I have my doubts so I go home and take apart the air intake boot and further inspect the throttle body. There it is, lo and behold a vacuum line disconnected from the throttle body that was suppose to be connected the VSV. To summarize everything , Earl is a truthfully a honest guy it seems, but is seemingly incompetent on the work and guys working for him do rushed, shoddy, crude, messy work. It's not hard taking off an air intake boot and reconnecting all necessary hose lines back. Paid $95 for some problems they claim they didn't cause and don't believe the customer, ONLY to take it back home and undo the bad work they did. Crazy stuff and would not go back. Be wary of what you're doing here.

My car has had the smoke check at the different stations in 15 Years, but I have worst experience with this place currently. This smoke check station is a dishonest place , the sneaky person is in charge the station. They putted the ad on the internet everywhere, and said they are the lowest price in the area and getting the people to come over by deception. After you got here, they will be using the different reasons to rise the price and you will be end up that have to pay higher than average price in other place. On the top of this, the guy in this place was very very rude. To my surprise when I spoke to my best friend, she also has had the same experience in this worst place. Quick service with no hidden fees. I passed up another neighborhood smog shop when I found they wanted to add a $10 fee because I had a hybrid, when their ad did not mention it. Turns out that EZ, rated here, was upfront about all costs and fees, and was actually $4 less expensive that the other shop, in spite of the other shop's add claiming a lower price.
