Ate here a while ago. Was decent, if not like every other gentrified dining experience in vancouver. It has the pretence of being a classic diner with the trappings of virtually every contemporary eatery in the city. There's a homage in the menu to the diner which preceded it (Reno's) which was a greasy, morning hangover kinda place to eat where I had a weird experience with the previous owner and never returned after. However it did have character, which this place essentially lacks. I love diners and breakfast and was excited to see what would replace Reno's and maybe find for myself a new place to dine in the morning before going into work nearby and went in excited to see the new breakfast menu. Of which, there's really only one traditional plate of breakfast and it had a single slice of bacon and an arrangement of food including small fancy bread slices that left me still hungry at the end of my meal. Considering the rest of the menu doesn't appeal to me, I can't say much of it nor if I will return in the future. However, with that said, staff were pretty friendly and a dude came over to engage and chat with me, although I just wanted to spend time alone and read the news on my phone. I appreciate the gesture though, no one really does that in Vancouver. So kudos, for that I rate it a 2 read more

They were a small selection of breakfast items all day which is awesome! Food: We ordered the loaded French Toast, the Super Trucker, and the Reno's Burger as well as two milkshakes. **Milkshakes: Chocolate Peanut Butter & Vanilla Coffee Malt, these milkshakes are so awesome, the best I've had in Vancouver because the flavours are really nice and subtle and it milkshake isn't too sweet, which happens quite often in a lot of milkshakes, I was actually able to drink the entire thing without my teeth/head hurting from the sugar. French Toast: I read of the DailyHive that these were a must try but they were a little too sweet for me. It was nice though, even the toast tasted like banana even though I don't believe there was any in it. Reno's Burger: It was a smaller sized burger, very simple and basic. I love the bun on the burger though! Reminded me of Shake Shack burgers which are my favourite. The fries it came with were awesome though, super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. **Super Trucker: Oh man, this dish was just awesome all the way around, their house made jam has a little bit of a spicy-peppery taste to it, if you're into that. And the pancake was made with cornmeal!! How amazing, I love cornbread so putting it into a pancake was just phenomenal. The Rosti which they described as hash browns, was literally like a Mcdonalds hash browns, nicely packed into a little square, super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. And lastly the bacon we ordered for it was actually a piece of crispy pork belly. It wasn't as good as Red Wagons but it was very delicious, I mean how can you go wrong with crispy pork belly? This one is a must try dish!! Atmosphere: Awesome layout! Super spacious and really modern decor and walls with a flair of retro because of the style of booths. Looks like a modern diner. Service: Our service was just regular, nothing to note about it, but she did have our burger cut in half when we didn't tell her we were sharing, which we were, so that was a nice touch. Food: 4/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 Service: 4/5 Overall, I'm very happy that Fable opened a diner so near to my workplace, it is just lovely, and I would definitely recommend anyone to come here to at least try their milkshakes. Been keeping an eye on this place for the last little while. I love the decor. I love diners in general. Vancouver has been lacking a good, solid, all-day diner for some time now. Now here is where it gets confusing... the food is a little off. Each item. The hash browns are a square block, the scrambled eggs have a pinkish hue (sriracha?), and the "sausage" is actually a perfectly round, hearty patty. This is all to say, it wasn't bad. It just felt like I had a plate of "play food" put in front of me. Like a square, a circle, and a blob. Something seems too try-hard. Most important take-away: My partner had a benny and it has the the most atrocious hollandaise I've ever tasted. There is something not quite right with the palate of the chef here. We ordered: a Veg BLT (with added bacon... whoops!), 2 breakfast hashes (one with sausage and one without), and poutine. The food was incredible and the menu was interesting. The vibe was also fun... clean, hip, with a little mid-century retro flair. However the star of the show (and the first in our hearts) was our server, Patrick. 2.5 stars: We came here on Sunday at 2:30 pm so the brunch menu was the only offering. The brunch did not "wow" me but I will admit I am not much of a brunch person. I ordered the least "brunch" item on the menu - the veggie BLT and didn't like it. The sandwich was very greasy and soggy on the bottom piece of bread, more of a fried sandwich than the fresh veggie sandwich I expected. I also did not love the shiitake mushrooms in it, too strong of a flavour against the tomato and iceberg lettuce. The fries on the side were just average. Given that the meal was just $10 I didn't bother complaining about the sandwich to the server. That said, I ate less than half and left most of the fries and she didn't inquire either. Took a look at the dinner menu and nothing really popped out - hoped it was going be more like Burgoo but doesn't seem that way. On a positive note, our server was friendly and prompt. Incredible food! We came here because of the reviews, its close to our hotel and very reasonably priced. My husband ordered the meatloaf that came with broccoli, mashed potatoes and a carrot (maybe ginger as well) purée. I ordered the chicken leg that came with potatoes, a gravy and the carrot purée (and supposedly Brussels sprouts but I never received them). We ordered the Cobb salad to share and it was all so delicious! Our 1 yo even loved it all. The potatoes in my dish were amazing, I would love to know how they were prepared. The chicken was cooked perfectly and went great with the potatoes. The meatloaf was good and even better along with everything else. The Cobb salad was a favorite among the two of us. We considered just having dinner here again for our next night in Vancouver because it was that good! read more

Went during week 3 of their soft launch. Two of us split the burger with onion rings and the beet salad. The burger was pretty good, the onion rings were great and the salad was tasty but quiet small. The service was pretty bad--our server didn't know what beers they had and it was empty and it was hard to place a dessert order and then the wrong one came. A different server was super condescending to an older man with a walker who wanted to have a coffee. Her tone was really unwelcoming. She spoke to him loud and slow. I imagine it's a bit tricky working at a fancy diner that used to be a dive, but it's not necessary to treat people like that. I hope they figure out the neighbourhood and the service because the food is good. read more

Fable Diner is everything I could ask for in a contemporary diner. The food is delicious, well priced and always tasty. The staff are friendly, informative and provide impeccable service. This place I would recommend to anyone wanting to try some place with a clean and fresh atmosphere, funky food items and a smashing wine/cocktail list. The duck confit crepes and the chickpea fritters are unbelievable and a must try. A place to bring old friends, a date, for a casual business meeting or to celebrate a special occasion. A big shout out to the team, for providing an awesome dining experience and doing such a great job at training the staff to be knowledgeable, kind and approachable. One bad waitress ruined an amazing diner experience. The place was beautiful, atmosphere relaxing yet classy, and the food was good. The FD burger's portion was surprisingly hearty. There were some very lovely, sweet staff there. But unfortunately there was just one waitress with a bad attitude that stripped two stars off for this review. I hope to go back to try their interesting apps and milkshakes, but I don't want to have my night ruined by awful Australian attitude. I mean, if this was a real greasy spoon, I would gladly accept it...with a piece of pie. But we all know this is not at all the case, this being an offspring of the big Fable brand. We've been here a few times but each time seems to get worse. The first time a few years ago was the best (min 4 stars) and the pulled pork bennies were awesome! However, today the hostesses were even more nonchalant AND the server said they will no longer have the pulled pork bennies so we ordered other items that left us not entirely satisfied. SERVICE The hostesses were even more rude than usual and today we were even forgotten entirely. They even had to ask who we were on their wait list on which they themselves wrote our names. This was only after we already waited 25 mins and were the ONLY group of people left waiting by the front door. They only questioned who we were after I stared directly at the two females (I presume those two were the hostesses as they were standing around chatting) because I saw that they seated a caucasian family before us who walked in after us and didn't even need to sign in. Funny that huh? Either the family was friends with the staff or the hostesses are incompetent?! The server was fine but it took forever to get our food to the point where the server came over on her own accord to let us know that our food was stil coming. FOOD - total amount paid approx $57 Bennie: scone, fried chicken, spicy ranch, gravy, pickles onions, olive oil hollandaise - the flavours were ok but not great, the hollandaise sauce was over thick, the scone was ripped apart and very messy, fried chicken was nothing special and not sure where the spicy ranch was unless it was the "sauce" on what seemed like a double deep fried frozen potato. Sausage & Egger Breakfast Sandwich: dont waste $12 on this. Is the same as getting breakfast from any fast food place Hash & Eggs: 1 med & 1 hard fried sunny side up eggs on greasy veggies and cut up double deep fried frozen potato with arugula. Don't bother paying the excess $6 to try to make it upgraded by adding the brisket as the brisket is hard and dry. We so enjoyed our first time experience there that we couldn't wait to come back but now (a year later) am massively disappointed. read more

Even though everything about the chicken benny was good, there's no reason a professional kitchen should take longer than 25min (at their busiest) to serve something so simple. I would have given this 4 stars until my last visit. I loved what I ate the first time I went but yesterday my wife and I tried the Mac and cheese and the broccolini along with our favourite chickpea fritters. The fritters were 5 stars for sure. We remembered them fondly from the first time but the Mac and cheese was super runny and under seasoned and I actually think that packaged Annie's Mac and cheese is better. The broccolini was nice and crunchy but the sauce served with it had a super weird gamey taste to it. So all in all I'm taking it down to 3 stars. But I'd still go back to try something else next time. Maybe the breakfast is better P.s after receiving your comment I have to say the Mac and cheese was definitely runny.... I specifically remember receiving forks to eat it with and struggling to keep the runny tiny elbow pasta noodles on the fork and wishing I had a spoon to help shovel it all up. And I don't actually make a habit of complaining about food unless it's under/over cooked or in some condition which is dangerous to eat. Honestly complaining usually just makes the whole experience pretty negative. But here's a place to review it so I did. I like to enjoy my meals as much as possible and if your Mac and cheese is sloppy one day it's not my job to critique your staff. That's on you. read more

I enjoyed a sumptuous roast duck pancake here. It was flavoured with kimchi and green onions and for a 1$ I had a fried egg on top. It was the perfect meal after walking in rain for a while. The service was friendly and attentive and I was offered a refill on my coffee. The ambience was welcoming and the washroom was spic and span! Overall nice experience, and I will return when I get another chance to try something from their large selection of cocktails! read more

Tried this place for brunch last weekend with a group of friends and it was pretty good! As others have said, it is a solid choice for brunch classics with some delicious twists thrown in. Portions are much more manageable than other diners, so don't expect anything huge. Only drawback is that they don't take reservations, and we waited twice as long as was quoted when we arrived. When we were seated the service was pretty decent. Saw lots of yummy things being served to other tables - definitely want to go back to try some different dishes! read more

Saw an article on the December 30th issue of the Daily Hive for the best grilled cheese and soup list and book marked it for future reference. I prefer this location than the west 4th one as this is more accessible and more relaxed. It has a modern feel, however, it is a bit more relaxed. I kept it simple with toast and poached eggs. Our waitress was super cute and friendly. Turn around for order was fast. Price was market value. Thank you for letting my friend and I stay a little longer and shoot the shit. read more

Kimchi duck pancake was a savory goodness the first time I was here. Then I came back with the friend for grilled cheese and pulled pork burger, which fell short of the expectations set by the first visit. Meat on pulled pork burger was dry and hard to finish by the end. Onion jam inside grilled cheese was an interesting experience but not the kind I want to repeat so often. The server was nice amd attentive but the food has gone downhill in a big way. I was there with a group a few months back and our experience was good. Last night however was far from ideal. The FD burger is a joke, 2 slider sized patties and thats being generous. I asked about this and although our server was equally as struck by the lack of burger in our burger, she was sent back with a generic answer of 'all our burgers are weighed'. Lies! Was looking forward to trying this diner since being a fan of the fable restaurant. I thought it was pretty average at best. We ordered the FD burger, Korean chicken leg, a peanut butter shake, and chuck Chocolate bourbon cake. Quite honestly, the burger was ok, nothing memorable. Chips were good but my girlfriend said they were too salty. Next the Korean Chicken leg, it was ok as well. I was for some reason expecting this to be a fried rice dish since it mentioned kimchi fried rice. The serving was quite small on the rice, maybe 2 tablespoons. But I had more issue in the that it didn't really taste like kimchi. Just some crispy bits of fried rice. Last was the dessert, this was my least favourite of the night. It was a special so if I remember correctly, it was chocolate Bourbon? The cake itself was dense but moist, coffee cake or pound cake texture. Icing/frosting didn't melt in the mouth, not even sure how to describe it as flavor was practically nonexistent. Overwhipped dollops of cream, to the point where the fat solids are starting to seperate with a noticeable mouth feel of butter. Bourbon caramel (?) is this where the bourbon was? I have no clue. I can't remember the taste of it, so it wasn't a very good caramel. A thicker, less runny caramel would be better, so that it will be able to stand out but still meld in with the flavor of the cake Pros... the peanut butter shake was awesome! Defiantly would come back for that. The space itself was quite nice and modern diner feel. Plenty of room. Side note, the waitress did offer to trade the dessert with something else. Woo. Finally got to check out Fable Diner recently. Came here knowing that the food would be pretty darn good and I was right. It was pretty awesome. I decided to try the FD Burger with fries and i was so happy with my decision. I got it with an add on of cheese and it made the burger that much better. It was a double patty served medium well so slightly pink in the middle. The burger itself was tasty and filling. Next time I want to add on cheese again and bacon. The fries were some of the best i've have in a while. Crunchy on the outside and pillowy on the inside. Next time I would also like to try the fried chicken it looked so delicious. Also I need to get a milkshake next time I go. I also got a taste of the duck pancakes and they were so good. The kimchi and the puffed rice make really good textures for the dish. If you're in the area you should give it a try. The service there is super friendly and they know what they're doing there. read more

Great Location! Amazing Front of House team! I have been here 2 times, both times - the wait staff was really on their game. Water arrived quickly, i could see the Manager (maybe) cleaning down tables, it really gives you a sense that everyone is thinking about the space and guests. The only issue I have is that perhaps the food is a wee bit 'hipster' but then again its main street, right? so I guess thats cool. One issue, was... around back, I accessed this restaurant via the alley - their organization of garbage and waste was a wreck - stuff strewn everywhere. The only disappointing bit was the coffee, but that might be because we are used to Australian coffee!!! We tried to come for brunch on the weekend, but of course, this being Vancouver, anywhere you go for brunch has crazy lineups and this was no exception so we retreated and tried back again for dinner. Arrived at an early time and had no problem finding a table. The interior looks great and the menu was nice and simple. Had the burger, fries, Korean Chicken Leg, a strawberry milkshake and the doughnuts at the end and everything was great. I would probably get the FD burger next time, maybe skip the milkshake (it was good, but my fave is still the one from White Spot!). I just saw that they do every day breakfast now, so I'll definitely want to check that out one day too read more

Obviously, the food is great, but I'm giving 3 stars because of the ambiance. This location used to be a place called the Reno cafe, and I loved every bit of it. Whatever was going on in the world it felt good to step into this little bubble of frozen time for some coffee and pancakes, or a plate of Liver and Onions. The decor looked like 3 decades worth of interior design layered on top of each other. There was history trapped in the space like leaves that collect in the corners of parking lots and alleyways. Of course, that's all gone now. The Brand New Fable Diner is nice and clean. The food is great. It's sure to impress your friends. It's a restaurant, a great one, like all the other great restaurants in Vancouver, and every minute I was there I was trying not to forget what it looked like before it all disappeared. read more
