It was busy but only waited 5 min for my seats at the bar. Ordered the grilled cheezus, beet salad, and tempura onions. My Wife had the fried chicken sandwich. Grilled cheese was a really good standard grilled cheese. Crispy but moist sour dough and just the right amount of cheese. The beet salad used yoghurt and was really a great balance of a hearty salad but without the heaviness a standard goat cheese beet salad. Very refreshing The tempura onions were okay as the batter was a bit too much. Tasted good but a lot to chew through The fried chicken sandwich was season extremely well and was very crispy. It's not juicy chicken but I don't think it was meant to be juicy. Overall a good breakfast joint. The bacon looks amazing!! read more

We started with cocktails - they were not good. We then had the soup - the taste was not that good. The mains- the steak was decent, the pasta was again below par. Amazing service! Pretty great food! Fair price.

Went here on the weekend for a friends birthday. The food was delicious and service was great however the one thing that bugged me was every single one of us got charged a "cake cutting" price of $3. Just for them to cut the cake for us. This is so ridiculous. Not even restaurants like joeys, cactus club etc. charges. Won't be back because of this. Update 4:34pm October 11, 2016 In response to Kathy S. Thank you for your response. When the reservation was booked through email there was no mention of this cake cutting price even though we were asked if it was for a special occasion. We said 2 birthdays were being celebrated that day. When we arrived with the cakes, we were then told that we would be charged to cut it. There was no advance notice of it like you mentioned in your comment. I have a copy of the email if you would like to see it. There was also no mention of 18% gratuity until we were presented with the bill even though the amount of people was said in the email, also it is not on your website. You guys need to be upfront with your customers when booking a reservation or update your website with these details. read more

The breakfast was pretty good, I'd give it a 3 1/2 stars if I could. The menu could be a little more descriptive, if you don't like jam on your sausage or a single 3 inch thick slab of bacon you'll be disappointed when it surprisingly shows up like this. They only have one kind of toast and it was too hard for me and the pancake was... ummm.... kind of awful. The rest of the food was great though, portion sizes are enough to fill you up with out leaving overly stuffed and the prices were pretty good too! read more

I've been here several times. All my experiences have been good, but I want to warn anyone against getting the lentil beet salad. So utterly unappealing and gross tasting. I have been a vegetarian for 20+ years so I know salads and I love them. This salad looks like something your dirty hippy roommate would make and tastes worse. I thought my friend liked his sandwich but he said he should have sent it back but was too embarrassed because I had already sent my dish back. Really greasy to the point of being inedible. Stick to the breakfast dishes. Diners and salads don't go together. read more

We made a large group booking (30+ people) at Fable Diner for dinner, and were so impressed with the whole experience. The manager who helped us with the arrangements was fantastic, the restaurant itself (location, decor) was perfect, and the food was exceptional. We had a three course menu with appies family style, a choice of entree (from 4 selections), and a dessert - and all was delicious. The staff was exceedingly helpful and friendly, and the chef was able to accommodate the very restricted diet of one of our guests, preparing something she could eat for each course. We would recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly. Great evening out! read more

Went there this morning with my boyfriend and since I am vegetarian, I decided on the chickpea burger which i've heard decent things about. First off, the portions are tiny and second, the waiter only took our orders and never came back to the table. The burger was burnt and the patty had no flavour. I got the soup (cream of tomato) which was mediocre and lukewarm at best. My partner got fries which were decent but overall the experience just wasn't worth it. The Fable is a perfect name for this place. The story of good food at reasonable prices are a true fairytale. We thought we would try is as we drive by often. I should have kept driving. The waiting staff were very good. Unfortunately the food was not. We tried the mac and cheese...mehhh. also the onion tempura..was greasy and not light and crisp...for $ 9.00 it was outrageous for 5 prices of tasteless onion. The hot dog was disappointing toppings were flat and ho-hum. The hipster crowd was about the most sad thing about this place..its supposed to be about the food...not a trendy place to hang out..After reading the comments from one of the owners on my review I had to chuckle....it seems that she clearly missed most of jest. And was offended by the truth....it believe The staff need to read more reviews on the comments of value for the money. I should also add why would anyone want to go out to eat if the can do it better at home...This is a issue with Restaurants in Vancouver. Owners think its the field of dreams. If you open a restaurant people will just come.....Sorry to say reality works a bit different. Great experience on a Saturday morning. We were there at 9:30, so no wait. Friendly, efficient service, great food (kimchi pancakes, fried chicken benny, and kids' pancakes). I thought the prices were good for the quality of our meals and the portion sizes were good (we paid $14 and $15, I think, plus $1.50 because if I can add an egg, I pretty much have to). Our experience at Fable Diner for brunch was good! We shared a the Fried chicken bennies and roast duck pancake and really enjoyed it. Service was okay and we didn't have to wait for a long time even though we went around noon on a Sunday. Overall I feel they have a good price for the quality of their food. read more

On Saturday me and my son went to Fable diner for brunch. I was really happy with the food. The service was great !. I had the Fried Chicken Benny, which was a popular choice as we saw it saw fly past us. My son add The duck pancake with a fried egg. That kimchi is effing amazing. The only problem I had was when were waiting for a server to return. We want to order a milkshake. But as we are waiting I watched a gentleman with glasses answer the phone. Sticking his finger in his ear while talking on it. I do understand the room is quite loud and busy. My only problem with it was the fact that he did not wash his hand when he returned to start making milkshakes. That's a big No-No in my books. Another time just a few minutes later sticking his finger in his mouth and then continuing to make another milkshake. Pretty much at this point I am disgusted and did not one milkshake. When I told the server of this she seems kind of nonchalant about it. Anyways we got the bill and left. Definitely will be back and I do want to try a milkshake but not that guys there.:/ read more

I had my birthday dinner here a few days ago and have absolutely no complaints. If you like the food and amazing service at Fable on 4th Ave., then you can expect the very same at Fable Diner. I went with the standard and got the FD burger - perfect size and delicious double patty. My friends got everything from the French Toast to the gnocchi and they all seemed to have enjoyed their meals! I was excited to try this diner since a friend raved about it. The service was great and I loved the look of the diner and the atmosphere. I wanted to give this place 5 stars but I just couldn't: a) there was lipstick on the mug; b) I had the $14 trucker's breakfast and it was pricey for what you get - one of each of the following: piece of pork belly, slice of sour dough toast, pancake that was about 5 inches in diameter, potato rosti and egg (I had it scrambled and assumed it was one egg); c) the eggs and rosti were very salty. Popped in for lunch and was very impressed! The owners of Fable Diner did a wonderful job of turning the dingy Reno diner into a bright, clean, and inviting space. I opted for the 'Roast Duck Pancake', topped with a fried egg, kimchi, and all the fixins' ($14+$1 for the egg). It was fluffy, the duck was tender, and overall the dish was packed with flavor. I would definitely order it again! My lunch date had the Reno Burger ($8), which I got to sample. It's a small, simple burger, topped with pickles (for people with bigger appetites there is a larger 'FD Burger' on the menu for you) and comes with a side of fries. I often avoid ordering burgers because they are overwhelmingly massive, but this would have been a perfectly sized burger for me! The patty was nicely seasoned and all of the components came together nicely for an excellent burger experience. Also, a dish I'd order in the future. Fable Diner is where the old Reno Cafe used to be. The breakfast is excellent, and it's become our go-to spot. They put a bit of a twist on the classics (duck pancakes with kimchi!). The staff are great and very accommodating. It's a little bit pricey compared to other diners in the area, but well worth it. As others have mentioned, using the Glance app to pay is very convenient. Get there right when it opens at 9:30am on the weekends to avoid the lineups. read more

Disappointing solo dinner: nice gin cocktail, but pulled pork sandwich was like something at a school cafeteria, dull despite tasty-sounding components. Rest of menu features standard diner/comfort food items. If my bland sandwich is any indication, can't say I'm enticed to return to try more. Amazing food! My new favourite brunch place. Even when it looks busy, they manage to seat you fairly soon if there's only two of you. Bigger groups have to wait a bit. I would recommend the smoked salmon benny. It has a very delicate and balanced flavours with thin strips of pickled red onion and herb mascarpone, which has the consistency of light creme fraiche, and they serve it on a scone instead of the usual English muffin. SO GOOD. And the huevos rancheros are also amazing. It's a little bit pricier (but not too much) than your average brunch spot, otherwise I would eat there every day. One suggestion for improvement: get some veggie bacon for the veggie BLT instead of just using the shitakes. read more

Having frequented Fable several times it was no surprise that Fable Diner exceeded our expectations. Since my family no longer lives in Vancouver it was a real treat for us to stop in for breakfast on a recent stopover in town. The service was prompt and very friendly. But wow, was the food ever good! It always surprises me that with the quality of ingredients used that Fable is able to keep their prices so reasonable. The same is true of Fable Diner. The thick cut bacon was to die for and scrambled eggs were perfect. Since I'm pregnant I figure it was necessary to have a milkshake for dessert and we had the peanut butter Nutella shake and it was literally the best milkshake I've ever had. I feel bad for my unborn child for setting it's milkshake expectations so high. I also loved the location and look of the Diner--the decor stays true to its roots. Overall Fable Diner leaves pretension behind for old fashioned hospitality and is well worth a visit. read more
