I half-expected to meet a ghost with a clipboard. Instead I met Mark, the owner, who greeted me like I was the prodigal daughter returning with craft beer money. Mark and his sidekick Jackson (a 20-something who knows more Newport gossip than Page Six) run this 1850s B&B like it's a speakeasy for history nerds. Three nights. Zero regrets.Husband is 6'6 and usually sleep diagonally in hotel beds like a starfish having an identity crisis. Here? He I'm so well he didn't move. It's the kind of comfortable that makes you suspicious--like, "Did they drug the pillows?" The room was super large. And somehow, in a house older than most countries, the Wi-Fi still worked perfectly. "Light continental" is code for "We're not doing eggs Benedict, but you'll fight a seagull for the last warm croissant." The coffee? I'd propose to it. Picture a parlor where Teddy Roosevelt probably arm-wrestled a Vanderbilt. Now add a TV, board games, and enough wingspan for my Gator football meltdown. Location was perfect!! Walking distance to everything. = I burned off the warm croissants and the guilt from the brewery/winery crawl Mark and Jackson mapped out. Pro tip: Follow his recs. Parking was Free. In NEWPORT. No servicing of the room unless asked, no large sitting area outside of the breakfast dining area to have wine or sit by the fire. The front desk was very friendly and helpful, the Halloween decor was fun, and the "jailhouse" details such as iron-barred & detective division doors, memorabilia, etc. were well done (not kitschy). Our 3rd floor room (Cell #20)had 2 queen beds which had the most comfortable mattresses and pillows, and featured wood beams and a large bathroom with beautiful vintage tile floors. The room faced the street, with beautiful views of an historic church and the White Horse Tavern. There were fresh baked cookies at 3pm, and the continental breakfast had plenty of variety, and was of good quality.

Showering did make us a LITTLE uncomfortable since there wasn't any curtain or covering on top of the window in the bathroom for privacy since we could see the upstairs window of the house next door, hopefully no one was in that house while we stayed since there was construction being done on that house during the day, so I'm assuming the house was currently unoccupied but even when we ONLY had the shower lights on to shower you could still see straight out the window right at that window next door, so if there was someone home they can definitely get "a show" from our shower. Haha. So I HOPE they put a curtain on top for peace of mind for the guests, once the house next door will be occupied. (See pic of bathroom window). Also sometimes guests don't drive & have to take a train in and pack light (we won't always fit umbrellas) so when it rains... if more than just 2 umbrellas could be available for the guests in case it rains, that would be great and that would show extra care. Actually have 2 umbrellas in each room, would be even better because we thought the 2 umbrellas outside the 1st floor room were the guests' umbrellas. Fresh baked goodies were waiting for us upon arrival and special treats just appeared during our stay, making the trip even more memorable. Hawthorne House is nestled in a quiet neighborhood, close to historic downtown Newport and the mansion district, and we found the atmosphere relaxing, the accommodations comfortable, and the hospitality genuine. Terri greeted us at the door upon our arrival and throughout our stay made sure we had everything we needed to make us feel welcome and comfortable, including fresh baked banana bread and homemade chocolate chip and raisin/oatmeal cookies. She kept the refrigerator stocked with a variety of beverages and coffee, tea, and hot chocolate were also available for fresh brewing in the kitchenette. We felt perfectly at home during our stay and even more so when, on late nights out, came back to find the porch and foyer lights on, awaiting our return. We recommend Hawthorne House and the Fitch's kind hospitality to anyone visiting Newport or the surrounding areas.

We visited the third week of April 2021 to enjoy the town and escape parenting duties and catch up on some sleep. A few hiccups marred an otherwise great stay at the Brick Marketplace. On the first night a smoke alarm battery needed replacing. Husband called on-call maintenance line at 2am but no response by 3am. I called back and Diane replied that Dan would come to replace batteries. Dan arrived, was so pleasant (even at 4:30am!) and took care of the issue. We tried catching up on sleep as the sun was rising that morning. Hoping the second night of our stay would be less eventful. Unfortunately, a rowdy all-night party in Unit 1 spoiled that. Screaming from the balcony, thumping music from 12:30-4am. Not much we could do! The Lofts are perfect entertaining spaces, and we get that, but wish other guests would be more courteous. Difficult for us to recommend Lofts to family and friends -- really great set-up, but when you can't pick your neighbors, booking is potentially an expensive mistake. In short-these units are often rented for parties, not a quiet escape for couples, families or a girls trip. Case in point-the fatal stabbing at one of their properties over Memorial Day weekend. Shameful and unfortunately we would never rent another unit again.
